A brand new subscription service is headed to Switch which allows users to read comic books and graphic novels, becoming the very first worldwide app for Nintendo's console in the process.
The subscription-based service will give users access to its full library of comics and novels for €7.99 / $7.99 a month, essentially acting like the Netflix of the comic book world. Some examples of the comic franchises that will be available to read from the beginning are Transformers, Judge Dredd, Dungeons and Dragons, The Metabarons, and Warhammer, as well as several which are based on well-known game franchises like Dark Souls, Dishonored and Assassin's Creed.
You can read these titles on your Switch in Handheld mode via the touchscreen, or even on the TV (which could actually be great for sharing stories with the family or reading along with children), and you'll also be able to discover new titles through a built-in catalogue which features content suggestions based on your interests.
Ronan Huggard, CEO of InkyPen, has shared a statement on the app's incoming release:
“InkyPen is the best way to read what you want, where you want from the rich world of graphic novels and comic books. We have no intention of selling content piecemeal, there are other places for that. We’re bringing an all-you-can-read model to the international community”.
InkyPen will launch on Nintendo Switch in November.
What do you make of this news? Are you interested in the subscription as a fan of comic books and graphic novels? How do you feel about the Switch receiving its first worldwide app? Share your thoughts with us below.

I dont know if the switch is the right system to do that. Tablets kind of have something like that already
@xpromisedx I don't have a tablet and my phone is too small to read on. Besides that: if it means that more apps will come, I'm totally in.
I dig the concept. It's a great way to get all those video game tie-in comic books back to gamers on a platform they already have. Sonic and Dungeons & Dragons will probably be what I get it for if I do. I wish that the Nintendo Comics System had taken off back in the day, but at least Sonic became a comics mainstay.
I just feel they should leave the switch as a gaming device, personally I am not interested in any sort of apps on the Switch, just my opinion though.
It's a start.
It would be nice if comics can be bought outright as well.
Oh cool. There's a lot of comics I limited legal access to and reading off of a Switch screen might be better than off PC.
Doesn't beat having a physical copy (for those that come out physical), but it's still nice.
I like the idea. But it all depends on the library.
Interesting idea, although I’d always pick my iPad over my Switch for reading.
Seems more suited to mobile/tablet devices which have have better battery. Good for those that will enjoy it for the switch
If it's indeed a worldwide service, with no restrictions, it could be pretty amazing even with a medium-sized library. Sounds almost too good to be true, considering all the licensing issues.
This is good for apps on the Switch in general. One has towonder though, where is the big name app support?
So... it's Comixology for the Switch.
Weird that we're not just getting a Comixology app, though.
I need a list of available comics. And I'm not sure if Switch is a good device for reading. I'd try it if it has a free trial.

Yeah, I already have a sizeable Amazon (and 300+ titles on various Japanese ebook sites) manga collection and my physical collection in digital form as it is.
A netflix or crunchyroll app would have tickled my fancy more.
It'd be really cool if we got a Comic Rack-style app that let us upload and read digital comics that we already have access to on our computers.
Awesome. Period. So many on here trying to somehow turn this into a negative, don't like it, don't get it. I'm pumped 😁
Great for people who don't have access to comic books on tablets
Ok, now give us a Netflix that works, since the one on the Wii U now buggs out all the time.
@Bunkerneath yeah it’s starting to drive me insane, any time I want to pause a show I have to press the button 5 minutes before I need it paused...
Is this IDW comics? If so where’s Judge Dredd coming from?
@gaga64 Glad to hear someone else is having the exact same problems, thought it might just be my console.
Not so sure about the pricing... We're already paying for Nintendo online... Why couldn't it be free or at a lower price? Well, I guess its not that bad. I tend to throw that kind of money away on food every week without restraint. But uh, I'd have preferred a one-off subscription or it being a thing with Nintendo Switch's online.
So another fracture where I get my comics, and on a smaller screen? Nah, I'm ok to be honest.
This is good. As all these on demand services, the library defines it all but it is indeed a good thing.
How come this is a thing and Crunchyroll still isn't??
All in all this seems like a good app, although a little too rich for my taste...
I'm interested, if there are some good manga titles included.
Also...
More apps please! I really want to use Crunchyroll on my Switch!!!
Inkypen, Is there third party comics like MARVEL and DC COMICS. But Inkypen have stylus editor like 3DS. But hey thanks.
Did not expect this at all...
@Ralizah
My thoughts exactly. I'm personnaly not going to subscribe to another service like this. I mean, in Canada, it'll be around $10 per month, and for that price (or around that price), I can subscribe to Comixology Unlimited, which has, I'm sure, a larger (much larger) collection. And while the Switch screen is fine for playing games, for reading comics, I have a hard time settling for anything under 1080p, as I prefer looking at comics a page at a time, and so I need a larger screen, and better resolution (usually quad-HD or better).
I mean, cool if some people are getting something out of this, but I personnaly view this as a bit underwhelming. Even if it was a Comixology app, the Switch Screen would be a bit uncomfortable to me for reading comics anyway...
If they have a guided view like the Comixology app it could work, maybe using ZL and ZR to move left and right between panels.
Having said that, I've invested quite heavily in Comixology so I'll stick with that for a while at least.
Forget superhero comics... will this have manga?!?!
Is it truly worldwide? I mean, Netflix is worldwide but the library changes depending on your region, as do the language options. Some popular services like Crunchyroll don't work in some countries as well because of licensing (or lack thereof).
If there’s no Little Lotta, I’ll pass.
"first worldwide application" means there were previous ones for single countries? Any example?
PS: Every time a rent service with monthly fees will appear, it will be labeled as "a Netflix", I guess? Is it to help dumb Internet people to understand?
@Fandabidozi It shows comics from IDW, Valiant and 2000AD in there so it appears to be bringing multiple publishers under one app.
I'm assuming as they didn't proudly show off any Dark Horse, Marvel, Vertigo, Image, DC and others that they are not on board yet.
@gloom, these aren't all superhero comics.
@Ogbert
Awesome thanks 👍
Finally! I was waiting for something like this for ages!
Though I would've preferred a simple comic reader where I can put the comics on the microSD instead of a subscription service with a library that might not interest me.
Or just a web browser to read any comics I want...
@xpromisedx The Switch is a tablet so it's a perfect fit.
Sorry if I missed it, but does this include Marvel comics also? I would love to catch up on XMen!
