I played it on XBox 360 (I think) back when it originally came out. Remember generally enjoying it, though not a lot of details. Also remember running out of gas on it at what seemed to be about half way through.
I'm generally a fan of RPGs, but to me many could dial back the length, scope, number of 'systems', etc., which would make them more enjoyable and finishable, to me at least. Cheaper to make as well, meaning potentially more profitable for the developer and publisher.
Just my opinion. May try this again on sale at some point depending on reviews.
I recommend The Last Campfire. After reading reviews, still wasn't sure, but took the plunge when it was on a past sale. Slow paced environment puzzler (which I'm OK with) and a bit melancholy (usually not my thing), but I ended up enjoying and finishing it.
As a developer (web, not game), if I worked there I'm not sure how excited I would be to read "facilitate an anticipated improvement in development speed and quality".
One of the few that I remember (and I've been around awhile) was the American Zelda Rap commercial, which you did include via the 'adding rap' link above. Kept waiting for Michael Jackson to pop up on the Japanese rap commercial.
Had never heard of Jedward before today. If I don't have anything nice to say ...
In case someone looks up this review and these comments, as of 12/2020, I searched around and found that the game had been patched, so took a chance when on sale for $20.
For the 4-5 hours that I played it, I only noticed a couple of graphical glitches, but no deal breakers.
My main point is that, as someone who did enjoy BotW, but definitely had reduced expectations for this game, even then after playing for several a hours I struggled to find motivation to continue. Not a horrible game, but just kind of 'meh' for me.
I am an adult, and this game is probably better suited for kids. My two cents.
Never gravitated towards Starfox games, and only occasionally play a space game, but after seeing the digital version on sale for $15 in 12/2020 and reading some reviews, took the plunge. And man am I glad I did. Once I got the hang of combat (both planet surface and space), as well as the upgrade system, this has become my current go-to game. I even bought the Collection Pack 2 DLC for an extra $12.49 and found it helpful and worth it. Highly recommended.
On a different subject, "With a cast of over 30 creepy, weird, and suspicious characters to interview", they should have called the game 'HR Department'.
Inconvenient truth: That "extra soft" and "extra huggable" material is probably synthetic (plastic) fleece, which is not good for the environment i.e. us.
Not specifically into space games, and not at all interested in 'toys to life', I had never even heard of Starlink: Battle for Atlas until a couple of weeks ago when digital edition was on sale for $15. After some research and reviews, decided to take the plunge. Man, have I been pleasantly surprised. Really a fun game so far, with production values that rival BotW IMO.
Although I'm a fan of some JRPGs, I never played any BD games, but did play the original BD2 demo and really enjoyed it. However, a bit concerned that I read that the game will be rated M. Really? For this type of game? Anyway, will wait and see when it comes out how it reviews and what the M is for.
PSA: It's not actually about saving the environment 'over there somewhere' when we are in the mood. It's about saving our own behinds. The planet will easily carry on without us.
Although not my thing, I have to admit that some of these mods are clever and cool. However, these videos always make me think of the Styx song 'Too Much Time on My Hands'.
But if the creators find it time well spent, good for them. Maybe some of them will leverage it to get a job in the game industry.
@jodudeit A current game that seems to fit your description is Foregone. I recently took a chance on it when on sale, and have really enjoyed. I'm not interested in brutally difficult games, and have found Foregone occasionally challenging but fair. They recently released an update which I read does add extra difficulty for those so inclined.
Played and really enjoyed DQXI when it came out. I found older DQs (pre-8) tedious after a while, but XI was first JRPG in years that I put 150+ hours into without getting bored.
Builder/farming type games aren't generally my genre, but after playing the demo, ended up really enjoying DQB2.
@Bizaster At the time I was researching if I wanted to buy it, I seem to remember reading that DQB2 had several quality of life improvements over DQB1. Don't remember the details, but put me off of DQB1. As I said, not generally my genre, but really enjoyed and recommend DQB2. At least try the demo, which I think was increased in length after I played the original demo and bought the game.
I recommend Suguru Nature for fans of Sudoku and/or Picross. Really enjoyable once I wrapped my head around the rules, which aren't that complicated, just different.
@Vsaxo27 agree with Grimvalor and Foregone.
Played Grimvalor a few times on iPad, and bought it on sale and played on Switch. Definitely prefer controller and docked mode, although touch controls worked impressively well on iPad.
Took a chance on Foregone when on sale about a week ago. Really enjoying it so far.
Ryza was my first Atelier game due to the overwhelmingly positive reviews. I really enjoyed the combat and synthesis systems, but think that the objectification of Ryza (is she supposed to be 15-16?) and Lila were totally unnecessary and off putting. To each their own, but may pass on the sequel for that reason.
Just bought and started playing the Hero Edition on sale. Had forgotten how repetitive this genre can be. Reasonably entertaining, but may not even finish HE DLC, let alone buy more. Having played several (but not a bunch) of this genre over the years, I do appreciate that the garbage loot drops are not overwhelming, which I seem to remember being the case in Torchlight II (which I bailed on) and others.
A little late to the picross genre, I think that I actually played the 3D picross games on DS and 3DS before I played any 2D picross games. Would like to see more 3D picross. I have played and generally enjoyed 3 or 4 of the Picross S games, but like some others I'm getting a little burned out. I thought that Murder By Numbers definitely added some appeal with the story. PictoQuest was decent IMO. Would like to see more picross/rpg crossover attempts. May take a crack at Pixel Puzzle Makeout League on sale at some point.
Edit: Forgot to mention that I bought Suguru Nature since it was released for $2. Wasn't sure what to expect, but am really enjoying it now that I understand the rules. Recommended to any Picross or Sudoku fans.
@jbreez00 Assuming that you are talking about BotW, when I said dungeons, I was referring to the Divine Beasts. Although they were obviously based on different animals, I found the look and feel more similar than I would have liked, compared to other Zelda games, but I enjoyed playing through them. And I generally enjoyed the shrines, but thought that there could have been fewer of them. Just my opinion. And overall I enjoyed the game and finished it (does anyone ever really finish BotW lol).
I bought and played it last night through the first boss battle, and I agree with @goldener 's assessment above. So far I'm enjoying it, and expect to continue. I recommend that anyone who likes these types of games give it a chance.
I'm a Zelda fan, but don't put it on the pedestal that it seems some others do. I thought the dungeons in BotW were too samey (although overall a great game), generally liked but bailed on Skyward Sword due to reusing bosses, and bailed on Minish Cap as it became tedious to me. I plan to buy OH2, and may end up agreeing with the reviewer, but to me it's rare that any media (books, movies, games, etc.) add anything truly ground breaking.
I generally like Metroidvania games, but the limited color palette of the first one put me off. This one looks more varied and appealing, so may give it a try if the reviews are good.
I think that it looks cool and fun, but only if you have a big room with a wood floor, which I don't. Maybe schools can open up their gyms for tournaments.
Played Banjo-Kazooie, etc. back in the day. Finally picked up Yooka-Laylee (3D platformer) on sale on Switch a few months ago, and it didn't grab me. Graphics were good, but overall game design seemed dated. Kind of soured me on Impossible Lair, but glad that people are enjoying it. Might be interested in trying another Playtonic 3D platformer if they modernized the design.
Not a fan of having to negotiate spikey floors/walls/ceilings, but graphics look a step up from pixel art (although I'm digging me some Alwa's Legacy right now). Depends on the price and reviews.
Having never played an Atelier game before, I finally bought Ryza about a month ago due to the stellar reviews. Slow to get going, but once I got the hang of the combat and synthesis, have really enjoyed it overall to the tune of 100 hours and counting.
The point of this post is that, although I think AR is a great game, I think that the overt sexualization of Ryza and Lila detracts from the quality of the game. Some game designers (and their customers apparently) seem to have an unhealthy (IMO) obsession with unrealistically proportioned female characters. I do consider AR on the milder end of that spectrum. Am I rationalizing ... probably.
I know that in many 'modern' countries including the U.S. (my country), there is a feeling of disconnect with our fellow humans, so that may have something to do with it.
Some may agree and some may not, but I'm not interested in debating. History shows us that trying to tell other people how to live never works, so I'm not trying to do that here. But based on my own experience, I think that there is value in occasionally stopping to question if the content that we choose to subject ourselves to is actually serving us.
Project Colonies: MARS 2120 looked and sounded intriguing until I saw that actual gameplay. Throwing around rag dolls in big empty corridors doesn't look particularly entertaining to me.
I bought and played this game. Being generally a fan of metroidvanias, but not punishing difficulty, this may be the most difficult game (for me) that I actually hung in with and think that I got to the final boss (haven't confirmed online but pretty sure). However, the second form of that boss was just too frustrating for me so after 3 dozen+ attempts I finally bailed. Might try the DLC sometime, and recommend the game to anyone who doesn't mind the difficulty. For most of the bosses the save point is pretty close. Hard mode? No thanks.
Although I generally avoid rogue-likes and rogue-lites, I did pick up Hades after multiple stellar reviews. And I have to agree, it really is well done. The combat gameplay itself is fun and conducive to pick up and play, which is nice, and the story, dialog, and voice acting are above and beyond. I also appreciate the depth and strategy added by the various items and powers that can be acquired.
I don't mind some grinding as long as the combat system is complex and varied enough, and the party members consistently acquire new abilities, e.g. Dragon Quest XI. Haven't played much Ys, so not sure I will try this game, but will probably try VIII at some point given all of the positive reviews and feedback.
Although Awakening didn't hold my interest, Legacy sounds much more appealing and I plan on playing it.
Doesn't impact my interest in the game, but can designers think of an alternative to the protagonist washed up on a beach? Almost comical at this point.
I play mostly RPGs and 2D/3D platformers, and was never drawn to HOPA (Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure) games, but around nine months ago I was bored scrolling through the eShop sales when I noticed one for $1.49, found a review, and took the plunge. I ended up enjoying it and have since bought another half-dozen when on sale, usually $1.49. Most if not all are published by Artifex Mundi out of Poland. IMO the puzzles are generally fun without being too difficult. And although the occasional animations are usually clunky, and the voice acting is nothing to write home about, the (mostly) static background art is great.
