THQ Nordic has announced that action-RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, a remaster of 2012's Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, will launch on Nintendo Switch on 16th March.
The release will be the first time that Kingdoms of Amalur has launched on a handheld console, and it sounds like Switch owners are in for quite the treat. Three DLCs will be included in total – The Teeth of Naros, Legend of Dead Kel and Weapons and Armor bundles – which, when coupled with the base game, are said to offer "hundreds of hours of exploration, dynamic combat and adventuring." Oh, and the music is by ex-Rare staffer Grant Kirkhope, which is nice.
Here's an official description:
The hit RPG returns! From the minds of the bestselling author R.A. Salvatore, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion lead designer Ken Rolston, comes Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning. Remastered with stunning visuals and refined gameplay Re-Reckoning delivers intense, customizable RPG combat inside a sprawling game world. Uncover the secrets of Amalur, from the vibrant city of Rathir to the vast region of Dalentarth to the grim dungeons of the Brigand Hall Caverns. Rescue a world torn apart by a vicious war and control the keys to immortality as the first warrior ever to be resurrected from the grips of death.
Players are tasked with building their own character from "countless" combinations before evolving their class and taking on enemies galore. There's plenty of content and world lore to explore, as well as a number of side quests to keep you going for hours and hours.
There's more on the way, too, as THQ Nordic has confirmed plans for a brand new Kingdoms of Amalur expansion called 'Fatesworn'. Details are still pretty thin at the moment, but we're told to expect it to arrive later this year.
Have you played Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning on other systems? Will you be checking it out on Switch? Let us know in the usual place.

"Baby's first Skyrim"
Yeah, I was hoping this would happen soon.
I played a bit on PC, but never got too far. I'm hoping having it portably will help me. I did like the game.
Oh hell yeah. I really enjoyed this on my PS3 but never gabe it as much time as I should have (never completed it). Would totally love to jump back in on Switch.
great news, it's no Skyrim but still worth the time of day..
If it is all on the cart I will be buying it DAY ONE!
Cool. If it's a good port, I'll probably pick it up.
fantastic...those screens are from the Switch version?
Liked this on PS3, will probably get the Switch version since my PS3 is retired.
Have it on PC. Ran into some issues so I'm a little worried about a port to the switch. Been awhile since I booted it up so perhaps that got all sorted.
Be a fun game to have on the go. Be cool if there is cross saves.
Hahahahaha glad I held off on buying it! (I still have the original anyway)
Never heard of it. Reminds me a bit of the WoW graphic style which is a plus for me.
March is gonna be insane.
I have never heard of this game. But it seems good according to the comments
HELL YES!!!!!!
This is the best action RPG of all time! I told you guys this was going to happen! See my thread in the forum called "The Kingdoms of Amalur Hype Train".
This game is better than any Zelda or Elder Scrolls game - trust me on this! The combat is excellent and the world and lore are the work of an excellent fantasy writer who for this one game decided to write for a videogame.
So NOW they announce it. 🙄
I wanted this on Switch from the start, but they never announced it was coming so I bought it on PS4 during a sale. I never got far back ok the 360, and always wanted to go back to it. This is a perfect fit for Switch, and since the remaster barely changed much, it should perform fine.
Oh well, I'm not buying it again. I really wish companies wouldn't hide the Switch ports. If it's coming later, just say so.
This game is okay, worth a shot for fans of rpgs but don't expect to be blown away, just a fun solid game.
@Slowdive
It only caught my attention because I wanted a new Fable at the time. Gameplay is fun, but the story bored me to death. Far too much dialog for the NPC'S. Eventually I just started spamming the skip text button just to get quests and updates to them. I dont think I've ever done that in a game before, or since.
Instant day one buy from me.
Played the original on Xbox 360 and rocked chakrams, put in a decent amount of hours.
Hopefully the port is handled well.
THQ Nordic has been very good with their switch support, so it was strange when they initially announced this re-release with no mention of the switch as a potential platform. Well, here we are.
Oof. Just noticed the date. Getting sandwiched between the already crazy 1.5 months that is: mario 3d world, persona 5 strikers, bravely default 2 and monster hunter rise is no good.
I really enjoyed the original version. I hope this turns out well.
Looks like a reason to fire up the 360 version I invested in a year or two back for B/C on X1X. Only heard good things up until a few comments above, so I'll demo it on X1X and buy Switch if the port is handled well and all on the cartridge.
Not THE greatest action/RPG, but a very enjoyable one nonetheless.
Gutted, would have loved this on switch when it first released but I've already hammered it on PS4 and only have a few trophies to hunt down for the platinum.
Its getting stupid having to wait a year for ports.
It's a fun game. I never did finish it on my 360. Maybe.
Oh god the loading times are going to be awful if they're anything like the PS4 version. Still a decent RPG with a really solid combat system though so may pick it up when it's on sale.
Any RPG of this kind is a winner in my book! Bring it on!
Lol no way i would pay more than £15 for this game, This was a decent game but i think the train for this has long since passed.
At this stage the game is really old, it's not even last gen anymore, it's the gen before. Even when it came out it didn't look as good as other games that came out around the same time.
This game should have dropped in that 2018 window when we were getting these type of "late life Xbox 360/PS3 action RPG ports" like Dark Souls, Dragons Dogma, Skyrim ect...
I've been wanting a Switch port since before the announced the re-release. So yeah, I'm hyped. It's one of my favorite PC RPGs. Next to Skyrim.
Heard good things about the game, so I'll cop it when it's $19.99.
The story behind the rise and fall of the development house is more interesting than the game. That being said, the combat system in this get is one of my favorites of any RPG. Will probably pick this up on a sale.
Hey, great news! It must be exciting yo play this in handheld.
@Slowdive
It's been a long time, I never finished it due to moving on to the PS4/XB1 generation.
I'm pretty sure it had tons of them. I recall having a very large quest log, possibly even sub-quests.
It was the design of the world that kinda intrigued me, but the combat that kept me. I always thought if Fable had combat closer to Amalur, it would make Fable even better. I can see it being closer to a WoW look, but I never played WoW or MMO's, so I associated it with Fable.
By today's standards, the combat likely isn't as great, but it has one of my favorite weapons in video game memory. Chakrams, like Xena. Except you use two at once and they're really flashy and fun.
As for the story, I guess I'd give it another go. I'm big on fantasy reading and all, but Amalur was hard to follow. Names were pretty odd, even by fantasy standards, and I just couldn't keep up with everything. It was like throwing the history of Amalur at you all at once, but it would have taken reading numerous novels or games to take in the lore and retain it. It was as if the game assumed you had played or read a bunch of stuff concerning Amalur before. Considering this was initially just a way to fund an MMO in the same fantasy world, I can see why they put so much into the lore.
Edit:
It's a fun game, and I may have glanced over it but I didn't see a price. It's an older game, not that it makes it bad, but if it's priced over $30 (I'm US), then that's already pushing it in my opinion. I'd say it's worth $20, but I'm guessing they'll charge $40.
Nice! I was hoping for this so much!
Glad I did not pick it up on PS4. Feels like this will get more time spent playing on the go.
Is it just me, or is this the funniest trailer ever? "Player choices" violence "Quality of life improvements further violence "Upgraded Mechanics" Even more violence
It looks good, but this is a dumb trailer
I just hope they dont make the port blurry like darksiders 2
Physical or digital only?
@Ultrasmiles
Darksiders 2 looked great. Not blurry.
@NESlover85
@Zuljaras Awesome! Thank you for sharing!!
@NESlover85 Awesome indeed but do not celebrate yet! I just hope they put the WHOLE game on the cart and not make it only half the game. (unplayable)
I thought it might and held out on getting for ps4, thank goodness! I have it on pc but I don't like how it plays with keyboard and mouse, this will be a treat if it runs well. This will be as close to a western fantasy mmo on Switch as we're likely to have :
@Kang81
combat still better than Skyrim a lotttt better with combos and more variety of power, i remember i played twice this game a lot on xbox 360 but i always failed to completed because it was too massive amount of quest , if the port will be valid and there are no breaking bugs i will buy and finished for sure. i Remember as well there are several quest with choices to make witch influence the end of that quest sometime with very evil decision
This is more action then rpg. Which is why this game was so good. Being offline, solo for a MMO style game is its only real flaw.
Was one of my favorite games on PS3, very happy to double dip on the Switch... Desperate for a physical copy though.
@Kang81 You are correct sir!
@aresius
Combat was definitely fun, I just forgot so much about this game as it's been a long time. Sadly, it was just added to my massive backlog of 'maybe I'll get back to them one day' list of games. Ha
@Slowdive
Your welcome, its a fun game, but just not one I would label 'Must Play'.
ROFL The game that doomed 38 Studios. Might try it. 😂
@Donutman it is interesting that the offline, solo version of an MMO is a negative for you. I've always thought it would be a cool idea for MMOs near the end of their life cycles to release an offline, stand-alone version that you could play like a massive, regular RPG. Of course, to do it well the devs might have to retune a fair bit of the content to be solo friendly, but, man it would be really cool to have some of the big MMOs to just run around and quest in at your leisure... Especially on a platform like the Switch. Pick it up, knock out a coupe quests in Azeroth, Tamriel or Eberon, leave it in standby, come back when you have a few minutes. Getting to explore those world's in that fashion would be great.
Of course, playing big games in small chunks one of my favorite strengths of the Switch. Skyrim, BOTW, Immortals, Crosscode, Witcher and, now, Amalur are all great fits for Switch.
some difference from this version compared to the original:
new hard difficult level (the original game was too easy and later was aggravate for the huge power acquired from level up)
quality of life staff to make the game better I don't know the exactly modification
Great game, but what about fps and resolution?)
I got the re-reckoning on PC, and I have to say the replayability of this game was surprisingly stagnant for me. It's open world (though some areas have Dark Souls scaling and will murder your head!), Skyrim lite, with an emphasis on its damn impressive combat and skill tree. There's plenty to do, lots of side quests and the main storyline is a little tame to say the least, but it's engaging at the right moments. But, and this is crutial for me, having started only my second run through of BOTW (and first 100% run), Kingdoms feels awkward, floating in this space between Zelda and The Elder Scroll's finest offerings. Glad to see it come to Switch, and I would recommend it in a heartbeat, but with caution to players of either of the former titles (Skyrim or BOTW), this is the baby brother in more ways than one.
@Zuljaras I forgot some companies do that. Here's hoping it's all on the cart!!
Another Steam wishlist item bites the dust. And I didn't even have high hopes for the port here! Probably because I overlooked this being a THQ Nordic title.😄
Ah, that awkward moment when even your actual PC library (boosted by various deals and humblegalas over eight hundred, as I've mentioned before)... amounts to less than a half of your Switch wishlist.🙀😆
@NESlover85 Re:reckoning on PC is 38gb, but that includes 4K textures. So it should fit easily on a 32gb Switch card.
I'll just put this in bold, so it'll stand out a bit more:
This is the easiest recommendation that I ever had to give. Kingdoms Of Amalur may not be a definite must-have, but it definitely is a must-try for fans of the action RPG genre.
It has stylish graphics, which still hold up today, it has an intriguing, elaborate story and universe, and the gameplay and especially the combat is really solid and entertaining, that you'll find that once it grabs you, you'll easily be able to sink large chunks of your free time into it, and the hours will fly by quicker than you'd think.
The cons are that the story can be a bit too much for some people, because I wasn't kidding when I said it is VERY elaborate, and perhaps the combat can feel a bit clunky to some, depending what you're used to. Remember: this is a game that originally came out during the Xbox 360/PS3 generation, so in some areas, it does show its age.
Although having said that, those are the cons of the original, I have no idea what improvements have been made to this remaster, but honestly, it's already good, so it could only get even better in that case.
In closing, if I had to give it a rating, then I'd easily give it a solid 8.5 out of 10.
@ThanosReXXX
if people are still playing Skyrim today they will just find the combat much better in this game , and one of the new things added is a new harder difficult level witch should fix the main problem of the original: too easy fights
This was great on the the ps3
If it's on cartridge I will get it as I never finished it on ps3
Just in case anyone is on the fence about this game. It is a MMORPG without other people. Like if you took WoW and balanced it for singleplayer. You have all the !'s you can handle and more cartoony graphics then you can shake gnome at. It also ruined everyone who was involved with its development and pissed off a whole US state. The story of the game development is frankly more entertaining then the game it's self.
That being said the game is... fine?
OK it is on cartridge
They have it at amazon 😊
Good stuff. Despite having a PS3 and loving RPGs, I never got around to checking this out. Yet another game making its portable debut thanks to the Switch, so cool.
@aresius Good point.
The remaster did not run well when it first came out, so wait for reviews with this one.
That said, if it is well optimized this is an easy recommend. Not so much an rpg as an action game stuffed into an RPG world. Best combat in the whole genre.
I have the original version on PC but never got around to playing it. I’m probably going to grab this for the switch because I’ve heard good things.
@sanderev other games could have fit on a cart but the companies decided to only put half on the cart and half download.
Zelda 2.0 and it's game.
@Vsaxo27 it had lots of graphic and performance drops especially in open world
@Slowdive Yes, but most side quests are very simple; the fun is more from the smooth action combat that has very nice progression
@judaspete It had a ton of stupid bugs on PC at launch, so yeah need to make sure this one is updated
@Michael0719 It really sucks because they clearly had a lot of talent
@Razer The remaster wasn’t complete at that time
I played it on XBox 360 (I think) back when it originally came out. Remember generally enjoying it, though not a lot of details. Also remember running out of gas on it at what seemed to be about half way through.
I'm generally a fan of RPGs, but to me many could dial back the length, scope, number of 'systems', etc., which would make them more enjoyable and finishable, to me at least. Cheaper to make as well, meaning potentially more profitable for the developer and publisher.
Just my opinion. May try this again on sale at some point depending on reviews.
@Antraxx777 marketing 101, don’t overhype a game before releasing. Most recently Cyberpunk 2077, although many others.
@Ultrasmiles
Not really. In the first world, a bit. But the game was well done. I watched reviews before buying that over exaggerated the poor performance.
Bought it. Played it. Finished it. Loved it. No performance issues really.
Now, Darksiders Genesis was a blurry mess.
I like RPGs on Switch. Dragons Dogma was great. Will add this too, RIP 38 Studios.
One of my favorite games from last generation! Now all they need to port over is MUA 1+2 and I'll be a happy camper after Diablo and Torchlight. Maybe sprinkle in some LotR War in the North and Sacred.
@thegametb We need Dark Souls 2 and 3
Eh. Cool. I guess. The Souls game poop all over it. Don’t see the point.
Day one buy for me. This is a fantastic, often forgotten and underrated game. Also this is my first post on here, hello happy gamers! This site seems a lot less toxic than the likes of IGN. ✌️👍
@Newellz It’s way, way less toxic than IGN. Welcome to the laidback world of Nintendo (and Sega) fans just talking about games.
Nice! I was hoping it would. Combat and reclassing was very fun in this game.
@Antraxx777
Thank you, I do appreciate your kindness.
Interesting. I really enjoyed this on PS3 and was pondering buying the remaster. It's a long game, tedious at times, but combat is always fun and it was visually impressive to me.
Someone help me understand the marking strategy over there at THQ Nordic? So you announce a game which is basically a straight port of older console with the super limited marketing budget. You announce it for every platform except the Switch, even though Switch version is clearly in development. Then months later you announce it??
@SwitchplayerJohn
Developers are still treating switch on the same way as the first year, with reserve and prejudice
@TheWingedAvenger Er... It's not though it's it! Good game and worth a buy, but Skyrim and Zelda? Delusional!
@MindfulGamer Have to agree here. Most rpgs would benefit cutting the size and scope, but KoA sticks out. Lots of areas, especially dungeons look copied from previous parts of the game. And I swear about 7 people voiced every character.
I like it despite this, but it would have been better if they aimed for 40 hours instead of 100.
Damn! I just got this in Xbox!
@Darknilious This is worth a watch:
https://youtu.be/cOywJPI9uTU
@BBIAJ that was pretty entertaining, thanks!
