In a great bit of news for Dragon Quest fans, two games from the series have received a permanent discount on Nintendo Switch.
Going forward, both Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition and Dragon Quest Builders 2 will be available at retail and on the eShop at the reduced price of $49.99 – down from $59.99. Nintendo announced the news on social media:
At present, the new, lower price has only been confirmed for North America; we're hoping a similar discount will be offered to fans in other regions around the world and will update this article if any such price reductions are announced.
If you're yet to pick up either of these titles, there's never been a better time to do so. Feel free to read our full review of whichever one takes your fancy to see if it might be for you (see below), and let us know if you'll be treating yourself to either title with a cost-efficient comment.

I have Dragon Quest Builders 2 both PS4 and Switch in USA version, but ironically i have finished the storyline for the PS4 version first than Switch version. 😅
Any yet , other 3rd party games like Diablo 3, Doom 2016, Skyrim , etc are still $60
This price reduction may be owing to the recent release of Dragon Quest XI S Definitive Edition on Steam, Xbox, and PS4, which only cost £29.99 or £34.99 respectively.
So it may still be most expensive for the Nintendo Switch version.
They have managed to reduce the price because of all the money they are making selling a game that people have already paid full retail for on PC and now they want £30 for the version that should have been out at launch. There isn't even a cheap upgrade price for people who already bought the game and supported them originally.
got Dragon Quest 11 like a month and a 1/2 ago for 60$ and I only played like 2 hours worth of the game bc I wanted to finish another game and will probably resume the game during winter break but just by only playing a little and watching some later gameplay I know it's worth every penny.
The price reduction may be due to Dragon Quest XI S appearing on Xbox Game Pass which not only makes it 'free' to play for a while for those subscribers but it also gives subscribers a discount on buying the game.
So, thanks Microsoft?
Microsoft game price competition with Nintendo making Nintendo games more affordable is a trend I'd love to see.
Great games, both of them. Definitely worth what I originally paid for them. Hopefully, this price reduction will allow even more people to enjoy them.
That's good news. I need to get builders 2 eventually. I'm hoping for it to be on steam's winter sale, I know it's unlikely though.
Wow 10 whole bucks, alert the press...
Each dollar saved is nice of course but this isn't that big a deal, the game could be found for this price already if you knew where to look.
Haven't gotten around to this game yet, so this is a nice bonus. Hoping it is reflected in physical copies as well
$50?? But they’ll go out of business!!
Dragon Quest XI S for ten dollars less might be a good reason for more people to try it.
And they should! It’s a better game than say... FF15. I’d argue it’s one of the best RPGs from this generation.
@Dman10 nintendo is the publisher of dq11s on switch in the west, they cant do anything about diablo, skyrim, etc
@Lionyone no, its because the game is 40$ on other platforms
Still too expensive. I'll wait for further price drops.
@Moon It’s already had them. DQ XI S has been on sale on Switch several times already, for less than its new RRP.
Got DQ XI last Month, what a great Game.
Can recommend it to every JRPG Lover
@Yosher
Maybe Walmart will take it down to $42 because of this price cut
Already purchased at full price and no regrets. None. Zero. Some of the best money I've ever spent.
If I were to pick it up, it would be on steam anyway.
@Dman10
It’s almost like three different companies are pricing their games differently. The nerve!
Yeah.. this is why I’m playing DQXI on Game Pass 😂😂
Gotta love that Nintentax.
This was ported to the PS4 and is £35, its still more expensive on switch after a "price cut".
If only SE didn't refuse to publish these games in the West, their prices would be in line with the other versions. While Nintendo shares the blame, SE isn't blameless here.
Edit: I've also checked on eShop and the price for DQ XI still says $59.99.
2nd edit: Price updated. I'm still leaning towards 3D All Stars for myself this Christmas because of limited availability. That and getting SM 64 on Christmas was a great memory for me.
Both great games. DQ XIS is one of my "most played" games on the Switch in terms of hours played.
Nice! Still need to get DQB2. It does go on sale pretty often, so this price cut should just further reduce the sales price.
If for sone reason you don't have DQXIS, no excuse not to get it now. Definitely one of my favorite games on Switch. Absolutely amazing RPG with a ridiculous amount of content.
@SMUGSLOTH69
You're going to get more than your money's worth if you see it all the way through. Be sure to load it up again after the credits role. You still have a whole third of the game left, and an awesome ending.
@nessisonett Yeah, Game pass is already paying for itself by having Dragon Quest XI on there.
Not much of a discount - I bought my physical copy of DQXIS on sale for $40 - but still, it's hard to complain about money off. I don't own DQB2 yet, so this is welcome on that front.
I'll eventually pick this up once I get finished with V and VII.
Walmart already sold it for $50 lol
For a switch release it's something i guess. I got it for 40 during a summer sale tho
@crudfish oh I know I'm so hyped to play it this break.
LOL, The Switch Tax is so painfully real.....launch price of this game on the PSXBox is $40....but Switch where it's been out for a year is still $50 on the price drop. Unbelievable!
O ye boffins of Square Enix:
I would have purchased DQB 2 at launch, full-price, but for your filthy practice of selling DLC 3 weeks after the game's (global) release. This Day 1 purchase is a compliment I have paid very, very few titles - not even BOTW.
I have yet to play the game (past the jumbo demo), and I am stubbornly holding out for a complete edition. Given my hundreds of hours of playtime in DQB1 (ongoing still, after 2.5 years!), and my enjoyment of the DQB2 demo, that non-purchase displeases me.
I have been happy with your Switch output, aside from the Erdrick trilogy re-releases last year, and the price cut is welcome. Please, though, don't cheapen your output with these filthy practices...
Signed, a potentially eager customer
For another possible reason for a cut, DQ11S on the Switch also got a price cut/DLCs-included rerelease version in Japan, I think last month, kept coming up in the JP News channel.
Ditto the comments vis-a-vis DQXI's quality. It's my second-favorite game of the entire decade (behind only BotW) and is a magnificent JRPG. The story managed to punch me in the gut more than Mother 3 did!
DQB2 is also a superlative game and would've probably been my favorite game of 2019 had DQXIS and Cuphead not released on Switch that year.
Played and really enjoyed DQXI when it came out. I found older DQs (pre-8) tedious after a while, but XI was first JRPG in years that I put 150+ hours into without getting bored.
Builder/farming type games aren't generally my genre, but after playing the demo, ended up really enjoying DQB2.
@Bizaster At the time I was researching if I wanted to buy it, I seem to remember reading that DQB2 had several quality of life improvements over DQB1. Don't remember the details, but put me off of DQB1. As I said, not generally my genre, but really enjoyed and recommend DQB2. At least try the demo, which I think was increased in length after I played the original demo and bought the game.
This is why I gave my switch away. Games too expensive. Greedy Nintendo. After more than a hundred games bought, don't wanna support them for the time being. Maybe someday again. Back to ps4 and steam.
Meanwhile, the Steam version XI S launched for $10 less.
sigh
@Bustacap It might be that price on other platforms #because# of Game Pass. Game Pass has over 15 million subscribers and they all just got to play DQ for 'free'. Unsurprisingly it's currently the most popular GP game. Game Pass is a behemoth, a juggernaut. 15 million. All at once.
I already have DQ11 (absolutely awesome game), but havent opened my copy of Builders 1 yet, so no need to lash out for the second one just yet...
As far as price cuts go, this isn't impressive at all. This is about how much I paid for a brand new copy at Amazon shortly after its launch.
Handy for me, as I leant my copy to a friend who subsequently vanished off the face of the earth and I can't get it back 😂 looks like I'm double dipping...
Builders 2 on PS4 is at my Wal-mart for $15. I’m sure its probably as cheap on Switch somewhere...
@Lionyone xbox players arent really interested in jrpgs so no, thats not the reason, gamepass or not
its actually kinda depressing, cuz that means the games most likely arent selling as well as nintendo wants
@Bustacap So why is DQ doing so well on Xbox?
I got both of these on sale for 50 CND each. Played 11S with sprained wrists the game was so good! Haven’t had that much fun with a JRPG in years and years, reminds me of the fun I had with FF6, Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger.
Still need to get around to builders.
@Bustacap Weren't Doom and Skyrim actually published by Nintendo on Switch? Or distributed, rather? On Amazon UK, the listings for those ask you if you want to got to "The Nintendo Store", which only lists products they published. Looking at Ubisoft or Sega published games has a similar prompt, but for Ubisoft or Sega stores instead, for example. Bethesda games on other systems have a more generic "Brand: Bethesda" tag also.
I would assume that pricing may ultimately be in Bethesda's hands for the digital versions, but physical is on Nintendo, so outside of sales they aim for price parity with the physical copies.
aight then you win, I'm getting my copy today.
@Bustacap Lol... well. You have spoken so it must be true. I'm playing it and many other games on Game Pass. Games I thought about buying for my Switch, but no longer made sense to throw money at. I've easily saved at LEAST several hundred dollars not buying games for the Switch because of Game Pass. There are rpg fans that play on Xbox systems. Especially if they enjoy rpgs and are given the choice between essentially free and $50-60 on Switch. The problem is more that Microsoft hasn't done a good job of building a library of rpgs on their system (something they're already working to correct for their new systems). Since many gamers are at least two system gamers, they go for the rpgs where they can get them and then a system just kind of becomes their default genre system. I did that with PS4 for rpgs for a while, until I started shopping around for better prices. I would agree that this drop isn't exclusively due to it being on Game Pass, but I definitely think it's part of the reason.
@Tsusasi the capcom leak showed how well japanese games do on xbox. or more accurately how bad
Meanwhile Dragon Quest Heroes 1&2 still remains a Japanese exclusive on Nintendo Switch. It's a great game on Switch don't let the framerate nerds tell you any different!
@NEStalgia I truly believe the "switch tax" is because of the cartridge cost. Also there is few 3rd parties on Switch compared the flood on the other consoles it means games have less competition and that keeps prices high.
@SwitchplayerJohn I think cartridge costs account for a small part of the difference. Less competition, and probably higher costs to actually port a game to Switch than to the trio of x86 platforms in general due to the extensive optimization required probably account for some of it.
But sometimes it's just patently ridiculous. We're talking about a game that was, literally, the first confirmed 3rd party game for "NX" back when it was only known as "NX", mid-WiiU, that has been out on the platform for a year now, and the PSXBox release is openly stated as simply a port of the original Switch game running at higher res. Not even added HDR, natively. And it's launching at $40 on PSXBox. And in that same breath they drop the Switch price from $60 to $50? When it's launching at $40 on other platforms a year after it's been on Switch?
That's just kind of over the top! Then again the fact that they're just porting Switch game and not using the OG PS4 graphics on the other platforms is also bizarre....so it's Squeenix being Squeenix, to a degree.
