Can you believe it's been a whole year since the launch of Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair on Switch? Well, Team17 and Playtonic Games can, because they've offered up a lovely discount to celebrate.
Right now, and up until 11th October, Switch owners can buy the game from the eShop at a very welcome 60% off. That takes the £24.99 asking price right down to just £9.99, which is a very tempting deal indeed.
Playtonic is also celebrating in the form of a brand new comic strip via its social media channels, telling the story of a mysterious fire in the forest that disturbs Yooka and Laylee’s gaming time. It's been produced by the super-talented Kev Bayliss, who worked as an artist on both Yooka-Laylee titles, and stars the likes of Trowzer the Snake, Rodney the Blamphibian, and other characters from the series.
If you haven't played this game yet, what are you waiting for? We'll leave a taste of our review for you below, just in case you need convincing.
Donkey Kong Country fans rejoice: this is the spiritual successor you’ve been waiting for. The worst thing you could say about it is that the overworld exploration may prove to be too involved for those who are in it purely for the runny-jumpy stuff, but those who are happy to mix platforming with top-down adventuring and don’t mind adapting to the constantly changing pace will find the best of both worlds here. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair is a fantastic sophomore effort that pays tribute to Rare's past and establishes Playtonic as one of the UK's most exciting studios.

Cool! I might be picking this up now! Also, what is this price in USD?
In case anyone is interested, the physical edition is just £15 on thegamecollection.net
Can't say much for the original, but the Impossible Lair is a great game. Did everything 100% except for beating the Impossible Lair at the beginning of the game. (If you can do that, you're crazy, but have my respect.)
@LatsaSpege It's about $13.
Great game. Hopefully they're working on Impossible Layer 2.
Loved everything about this but the last level. To heck with that garbage even after the update.
This game is so great
But how much is it on the Russian eShop?
Great game.
I already got it on PC for free with Epic Games, so I'm not thinking on buying it on Switch for now. But I'm happy that more people will try this awesome game!!
I need to play it. I got it on one of the sales, but I still haven’t beat the first one. but I’m on the last world. I’ll probably try to beat it tomorrow, because I’ve heard the impossible lair is excellent, and I loved donkey Kong country returns on the 3ds.
I've had my physical copy of the game for so long but haven't returned to playing through it. I've been so keen to play so many games yet lack the time.
And in still not buying it.
Even with the latest update, can people still finish or it's still very difficult? I hate very difficult games. For example DKC returns / tropical freeze have normal difficulty and only some extra stages were a pain in the @ss - but these were optional levels.
Pretty good game, though I haven't played too much of it. But the loading times are horrendous!
Hate this game. Anyone want my digital copy?
@AG_Awesome
Absolutely agree
Last level is horrid. If I was stuck in prison with nothing to do I might have put the time in to beat it but as a free man I got way better things to do than grind away at that!!
Apart from last level the game is absolutely fantastic
@nkarafo the game is perfect difficulty but the last level is way harder than the rest of the game... even so highly recommend this as collecting all the bees feels like a nice accomplishment even if I couldn’t beat the last level
I went for it, been wanting it for ages!
The review said the hub world had quite a lot of exploring. I hope it's true, that's my favourite thing about these games! I hope they keep the humor, but I'm not really worried about that!
Great game, but I still can't beat the last level 😭
The dev team really need to carry on working on the handheld visuals.
Docked it looks great - but compare this game to DKC TF on handheld and it's has rather shockingly muddy visuals – blurry and with some very rough anti-aliasing. You may say that it's a much smaller team – but this very same team got the fully more demanding 3D original Yooka Laylee game looking amazing on handheld – so it's not a valid reason. The original Yooka Laylee looks sharper than Mario Oddysey does in parts! This game just wasn't given as much love/final touches when transitioning it to un-docked play – and it's such a shame - because the gameplay and visual style is amazing - top tier.
Please Playtonic – revisit it with a patch so both your games can look equally amazing on the Switch Lite too.
I really enjoyed this game except the overworld. When I think about returning to this game to finish it, I think about how much I hate wandering around trying to find the next level so I can actually play
I'm still amazed the game was available for free on the Epic Games store, I have yet to play it, but I had the first game on my backlog and had a blast with it. I'm kind of pissed they didn't continue to push the 3D platform gameplay though, it looks like the second game is much better. But the competition is extremely high, there are tons of great 2D sidescrollers, but good 3D ones? That's another story.
Played Banjo-Kazooie, etc. back in the day. Finally picked up Yooka-Laylee (3D platformer) on sale on Switch a few months ago, and it didn't grab me. Graphics were good, but overall game design seemed dated. Kind of soured me on Impossible Lair, but glad that people are enjoying it. Might be interested in trying another Playtonic 3D platformer if they modernized the design.
Cool little guy and game. I thought it fit the Switch well.
@Agent069 Oh wow, I guess I missed it on EPIC.
Can not complain, I've gotten a few Free games at EGS this year. I bought the Amazon DLC for TROY Total war Saga because I was starting to feel guilty when I got the main game for Free 😅
@dings
Fair enough personally I loved the over world it was a lovely break from the hectic platforming
@brunojenso I actually have no problems with the visuals; the art and color design is fantastic. And playing with the extra filter modes is a lot of fun.
@DreemWeever The overworld WAS the game for me and I loved it. It’s so fun exploring there
@Agramonte It’s actually a very big game; there’s a ton of stuff to do and find
@Antraxx777 Thats good – and I also can enjoy and play the game – I just would like to see it achieve it's full potential on Switch. Do you mostly play docked or undocked?
I enjoyed Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, and at that price it's definitely worth picking up, if you haven't played it already.
@Antraxx777 Yeah I did not mean it that way. There is a good amount of game in there.
