As we roll into the final month of the year, it's natural to be looking back over the Switch games that have come and gone and wondering if you've missed anything. Many of us here at Nintendo Life are trying to catch up with things that slipped our personal nets and, as we've noted before, there are inevitably things that have slipped through site's net as well.
So, six months after we asked for your personal hidden gem recommendations for great Switch games that we missed reviewing on the site, we thought it worth asking if there's anything else you've found since Switch launched back in 2017 that we've overlooked.
In the past six months we only managed to catch up with one release from earlier in the year — UnderHero — and there are still plenty of games hiding on the Switch eShop. So, we're asking Nintendo Life readers to once again send us their thoughts on Switch games they've enjoyed recently which seemed to fly under everyone else's radar. They needn't be recent releases, although let's make sure there are no repeats from the twelve games our community highlighted in June.
We'll read all your entries and reproduce our favourites in another feature showcasing games that the Nintendo Life community feels deserve some love.
Just as last time, the only prize for having your entry selected is seeing your words highlighted on the site, and the submissions process is identical to last time, too:
Submission guidelines
- 100-word limit - Keep it brief! A history of the genre and deep-dive into every mechanic is unnecessary. Concentrate on what the game is about, what sets it apart from other games and why you enjoyed it.
- One entry per game - Feel free to send your thoughts on multiple games, but there's no need to duplicate.
- Choose only games that we haven't reviewed on the site - To check if a Nintendo Life review exists, simply type the name of the game into the search box at the very top of the page (look for the magnifying glass icon in the top left corner) and click on the game page that appears. If there's no review, you're good to go!
How to send a recommendation
- Head to Nintendo Life's Contact page and select the subject "Switch eShop Hidden Gems" from the drop down menu (it's already done for you in the link above). Type your name, email and beautifully-crafted message into the appropriate box, hit send and Bob's your uncle!
Feel free to drop any questions in the comments section below. We look forward to seeing what you recommend.

OXENFREE. Best game ever.
Celeste, best hidden gem
20XX is underrated. It is Mega Man X with Multiplayer and is Rouge Lite style game. Highly Recommend it.
@Venus_Adept Too bad the developer is a liar. "Challenging but fair" my a$$. It's difficult as [redacted] and designed to punish players, and I'd have a lot more respect for them if they just admitted that, and acknowledged that that's the kind of game they were going for.
troll and i best game eva
Overcooked special edtion
Woodle Tree 2 is such an Underrated 3D platformer, and it's like $4.30 rn so at this point just buy it.
Other great games:
Old School Musical (Wonderfully funny pixelly rhythm action game with levels based on Zelda, Tetris, Metal Gear Solid, Outrun and other classic games!)
Conduct Together (train conductor puzzle game similar to Urban Flow)
My hidden gems :
Pretty Princess Party
1-2-Switch
Earthlock
Jenny LeClue is my pick.
@JimmySpades celeste? It's one of the easiest 2d platformers I've played unless you are hundred percenting it which is just there for community fun. And this game respawns you instantly right at the obstacle you missed instantly with no penalty this is the very definition of challenging yet fair. It's painfully obvious that you just arent good at the game which is fine but even so this game is not a large challenge to best at all. My 7 year old sister who doesn't play videogames beat it with me for fun when she's only played Mario before. man I'm curious how you will react when you play an actually hard game that actually punished you for being garbage lol which is funny considering this game is on the easier end of the hard game spectrum. Now hundred percenting that is insanely difficult but it's for fun and bragging so just don't do it if you don't want to
I like Zaccaria Pinball for its not needing to purchase everything and for its customization options.
@Venus_Adept Celeste is a gem but I really wouldn't call it hidden most if not all of the Indie community knows what it is by now
@TimboSlice Found out about this game after Afterparty was released
@JimmySpades It is a fair game. Your death animation and your respawn speed is way faster than any Mario game. And there is an easy mode, sooooooo
@JimmySpades What do you mean by punishing? I plan to play Celeste soon and my understanding is that there is zero penalty for death and you restart instantly without losing much or any progress? I don't mind an extreme challenge but I draw the line at being punished for losing.
Edited for clarity
I know most people know what this game is but I need to remind everyone bc they're avoiding it plus it's one of my favorite games ever along with Bioshock: Infinite complete edition and the stick of truth and that game is A Hat in Time I have over 60-80 hours of that game in my SWITCH and after the updates and all the DLC I have to say it's worth your time and money and if you don't know what that game is google it right now
@HotGoomba___Rebrand lego city undercover is my pick as well a fantastic game people write off as another lego game when it is a fantastic grand theft auto spoof that is just a pleasure to play as well as the good old lego humor
@RBRTMNZ he doesn't know what he's talking about this game is so forgiving you will be fine you die at a obstacle it doesn't take you back like mario it puts you right where you died instantly meaning you won't get punished literally at all
MO Astray is by far the best under the radar game I have played this year. Crazy beautiful art, fun novel gameplay, and dope boss battles with the perfect amount of challenge.
Other 2020 hidden gems for me were Touhou Luna Nights and Hotshot Racing.
Not a gem in the sense that it's obscure but there hasn't been much coverage over realMyst: Masterpiece Edition.
It's a bit dated in some areas but I thought it was a decent update of the original
Cook Serve Deliscios 2 and 3.
Super fun in two player co-op! Feels like a Cooking Mama speedrun.
@Ghostchip That is what I thought. Thanks for the clarification. I have dropped off amazing games like Hollow Knight because the punishment is beyond frustrating for me and my childish reaction to that frustration does not sit well with my wife.
Battle Supremacy Ground Assault is a decent Tank Game if World of Tanks Blitz didn't do it for you. Unlocking parts to build up your own tanks is fun, it suffers from mobile-port visuals, dead multiplayer, archaic menu systems and long load times.
Hidden in Plain Sight is one my favourite little gems! Perfect for gamer nights in with friends.
I am once again going to recommend Tactical Mind 1 and 2. It's a very clever game, one with few elements and many possibilities. The one downside is that the rules are hard to explain so it's not easy to get some human opponents.
Golf Story is a great arcade golf game with a crazy story.
I really like as hidden gems:
Crown Trick
Grimvalor
Foregone
Has Been Heroes
Indie Games I finished that stuck with me:
The Final Station
Kingdom Two Crowns
Ashen
The Flame in the Flood
The Count Lucanor
Hob
Windbound
@RBRTMNZ haha yeah this game never sets you back and it is short do you will have a good time
Volta-X is my pick.
@SMUGSLOTH69 I know, the whole Celeste "hidden gem" its a meme based on this fact, hence the
@Venus_Adept oooooohhhhh
Yoku's Island Express. One of my favorite games I played last year, and it's on sale pretty often; it's only $5 right now.
Theres a couple of decently fun survival games worth an honorable metnion:
Windbound (not hidden)
and The Flame and The Flood (most people have seen it on sale)
Hidden gems:
Invisigun Reloaded
Boomerang Fu
Hypercharge Unboxed
Killer Queen black
Each one is a fantastic time with friends and play far better than looks
There's a risk of rain in the contact form
A Short Hike. It's short, but awesome.
Oddmar. Fun platformer in the vein of Rayman.
I'm not doing your jobs for you Nintendo life. Not today! 🥴🤪😁
Put my hat in the ring for Hot Gimmick Cosplay-Jong (had fun learning real Mahjong with this) & Sky Gamblers: Storm Raiders (good at scratching that Ace Combat itch).
SaGa Scarlet Grace: Ambitions. It's worthy of a review. Some sites give it 10/10, it have a great turnbased combat system, one of the best I've seen. Please look into it!
Megadimension Neptunia VII. It's a great JRPG that literally no one talks about.
Anarcute lov it
Membrane, its pretty much generic puzzle platformer, but its still a lot of fun.
Forgotton Anne
New Super Lucky's Tale (maybe not hidden, still suggesting it)
Killer Queen Black, so under rated.
Garfield Kart, under rated, and superior to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
@cyberboycoolen Yeah, a great game. I have played it on PC.
"Choose only games that we haven't reviewed on the site."
Just sayin.
Banner of the Maid.
Best Fire Emblem on Switch.
Elliot Quest, it's a really fun Zelda 2 clone
This Strange Realm of Mine. Atmospheric and intriguing, also it's only about four hours long.
Old Man's Journey is short yet sweet, and tells a sad story while doing so beautifully.
@Ghostchip Yeah it's a great game, not a $30 great game, but a great game.
Dude, Stop - If Duck Amuck were a point and click/WarioWare hybrid.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand I got it for like 5 bucks I agree just wait for a sale you could buy hollow knight sonic mania or celeste with that money
@Snatcher have you ever been able to play it online? I grabbed it for 5 bucks and was absolutely deserted. No one plays it. I've been only able to play 1 vs 1 matches which are absolutely boring.
If I submit something, will it get ignored like my last query through the contact page?
Don’t want to waste my time, you see.
@Ghostchip Or Okami
I submitted Children of Morta, which was a surprisingly great game I only discovered from a sale.
@HotGoomba___Rebrand the list goes on too long man this console has some library
@WoomyNNYes I started NSLT yesterday, it was the 3D platformer I needed right now
Seems totally great!
Behold the Kickmen is one my favourite games from the e shop. Hilarious. Well observed. A few niggles but on the whole it’s great fun.
@Ghostchip wow you and your sister are so badass
I recommend Suguru Nature for fans of Sudoku and/or Picross. Really enjoyable once I wrapped my head around the rules, which aren't that complicated, just different.
@Vsaxo27 agree with Grimvalor and Foregone.
Played Grimvalor a few times on iPad, and bought it on sale and played on Switch. Definitely prefer controller and docked mode, although touch controls worked impressively well on iPad.
Took a chance on Foregone when on sale about a week ago. Really enjoying it so far.
I picked up Rive for about a fiver and it was well worth it. Hard though at the moment got stuck on final boss and never returned the final boss is nails. Maybe one day i will return. Rive if your interested is a shooter with big bosses and lots of deaths and it don' t take itself seriously at all if you want a tongue in cheek blaster it be right up your alley.
I'd be glad to submit something, but it looks like Nintendolife has reviewed everything I've played!
Not bad, considering I've got about 70 titles. The only exceptions are Kitten Squad and Mad Age and This Guy, which were both free titles I got that turned out to be less than worthless.
@MindfulGamer
Foregone is a lot of fun. Only problem is that it is just action non-stop I needed to take a break every once in a while because I was getting action fatigue.
But yeah, it's very good fun.
Also, I like how the bosses aren't too hard. Some games have super hard frustrating bosses. That kills the pace and enjoyment for me in some games.
I like jrpg a lot so I say Earthlock.
There’s a lesser known title that most people skip past called Mario 64. It’s supposed to harken back to the golden years of gaming. I recommend that.
Little gem called Breath of the Wild that from what I know nobody has heard of. Main character is.... Lunk, .... Lonk, ... something like that.
Oh no, he’s called Zelda!
Just started my 2nd playthrough, actually . Determined to get the 900 small golden turds this time around!
Football Heroes Turbo
@RunninBlue yes you will be ignored. Except for right now. I'm not ignoring you.
I had tons of fun playing Unruly Heroes with a friend.
@Vsaxo27 I totally agree with Has Been Heroes. It is really difficult ans has great game mechanics.
I paid 19 cents for Ding Dong and I play that game every day
9 Parchments & Trine 4 (somewhat well known)
...and if you like 8 player multiplayer:
Pico Park - Best co-op 8-player game ever?
Baron: Fur Is Gonna Fly - the songs, the comedy, the carnage!
@Anti-Matter I always wondered about Earthlock.
@Joe-b
Earthlock is a Turn based RPG very similar like Final Fantasy X and you won't believe if that JRPG style game made by Norwegian developer Snowcastle (with some Japanese peoples in their team).
You can see the enemies and when you encounter them, it will be like turn Based JRPG style.
I have the physical release by Super Rare Games, bought last year from Ebay (And it was my 2nd most expensive purchased game), the Standard release have a mini booklet + cards with some artwork. Also, the game has been polished with some proper gestures and running on 60 fps.
Definitely must try.
@Anti-Matter sounds better than I thought. I love turn based RPG'S. I'll look linto it!
Celeste
Hidden Gem
@Rika_Yoshitake
That's like saying that bread is a rare food lol
Phantasy Star - I can’t stop playing game. It doesn’t matter that the graphics are very dated. I would recommend this game to anybody that likes a JRPG.
I can’t seem to find a review of the game here, so this is what I’ll nominate: “NO THING” by Forever Entertainment. It’s a very bizarre, hidden... rock? Not sure I’d call it a gem, but it sure stuck with me for a while after playing it!
@Skruner
I downloaded it day one and it is still on my Switch. It is a perfect in between games type of game. I still play it quite often, while most other games are one and done for me.
I know some people had problems with the camera, but I loved Fe
https://www.nintendolife.com/games/switch-eshop/fe
Atmospheric, gorgeous looking, and came out really early in the switch life
If I'm being honest, I look at indie games now with more enthusiasm than I do Triple A titles, and as you know, the Switch is full of good options. I'm sure others here have posted some really good titles, but I'll offer a few to help the cause.
Regalia: Of Men and Monarchs: fantastic tactical rpg that is full of humor and a lot of growth.
Golf Story: Despite not being a sports fan, I love this game, and I play through it at least once a year.
God Wars: I've been itching for a good tactical RPG, and I've been really spoiling to play Final Fantasy Tactics. So far, this is the best thing I can find that hits those notes.
Volgarr the Viking: Adequately named because you will say a few choice words playing this. Very hard but very fun.
Salt and Sanctuary: Hits that Dark Souls note with challenge, customization and gameplay.
Wulverblade. Medieval streets of rage type action with Scottish clans fighting off the Romans and cockney English. That was always going to hit the spot with me 😄👍
I'm enjoying 198X just now too. Fun and varied retro action.
@JimmySpades
Git gud, bro.
I feel you covered Dandara with a review already but I do think it's a bit underrated. I think it's navigational approach to metroidvanias is unique in the genre and after the recent updates has been expanded with even more content. It's incredibly challenging but does feel super gratifying to complete. The music is also very good. I feel it's an underrated gem.
@SMUGSLOTH69 oh man.... after party was sooooo horrible. The graphics were a mess and the story was so boring. Nothing at all like Oxenfree!!!! So sad. I’m so mad I wasted money on afterparty.....
I like the recommendations of games in the comments on this article that obviously already have reviews on Nintendo Life. Good job, people!
Death's Hangover
A brick breaker/akanoid style game in an SNES like artstyle. Using the ball and paddle you destroy obstacles and crush enemies.
You control two guys that the Grim Reaper turns into women, Andy controls the paddle while Bob is inside the ball you hit. They explore many floors inside Dracula's castle in search of the Reaper's lost souls. There are also cutscenes with humorous yet crude dialogue.
It's also a very cheap game at that.
So, time to suggest Quad Fighter K (known as Kyogeki Quartet Fighters in Japan) again...
Dauntless = very nice
@TimboSlice oh ok well haven't played it yet so I guess I'll just get oxenfree
Duck Game. This game is a blast to play on local or online 4 player. I can play this with my 5 and 4 year old kids as well as with my buddies on guys night.
@cyberboycoolen SaGa SCARLET GRACE: AMBITIONS - thanks for great tip! I just bought it.
A couple of my tips:
Forager
Tangledeep
Fell Seal: Arbiter’s Mark
void tRrLM(); //Void Terrarium
Star Renegades - on latest patch a lot of the issues were fixed
@ryancraddock, @Liam_Doolan, and others @NintendoLife
I hope you'll still taking recommendations, if not, sorry for responding late.
Anyways, there's been a game that a user been playing that hasn't gotten a review, and it released early last year (February 2019).
The game is called Evoland Legendary Edition, and I was hoping that you guys would review it.
