We're not quite sure how The Girl From Arkanya missed us back in August. This 2D Zelda-style RPG comes from Peruvian developers Arkanya Games, and was successfully funded on Kickstarter within a day, smashing an initial $10,000 goal to earn $43,453 overall. It's coming to Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One, as well as Steam and Itch.io.
If you've not come across The Girl From Arkanya, the story is set in 1167 A.D and focuses on Marisa, a young adventurer within the Amazonia. Looking to become the world’s greatest treasure hunter, she'll be accompanied by her capybara companion, Kapi, letting you switching between both characters to solve puzzles. Before you ask, yes, Kapi can also be petted.
Arkanya Games has been hard at work since the crowdfunding drive concluded and has now released several samples from the OST. You can check out more via their official YouTube channel, which contains 5 songs right now and honestly, we're really liking what we've heard.
There's no release date at this time, but we're quite interested to see how this game further develops, so we'll keep you updated as we learn more.

Looks like a GBA game. I'm so down for this.
So long as it is well made, there is no "too many games" in this style for me. Same goes for Metroidvanias
Not interested in any third party games "inspired by" (read: ripping off) Nintendo games. Only yesterday we had a Wind Waker clone on here. Some of these titles look ridiculously similar, so much so that it's actually cringey.
Let's have a little originality please and not be so shameless...
Monke for president
Mmmm yes 'inspired games' remember that one title a few months back that had a girl in a blue tunic and the world was mostly ocean. Yeah, 'inspired' is just a nice word for copied. The tree stumps look like they were just ripped from the 2D zeldas. This looks like a terrible clone and I don't wanna be updated on any news about this
another rpg maker game
@1ofUs Yes, some of the Metroid ones are just ridiculous in their plagiarism too and may as well just be called Retroid (Starring Sanus Alan) Just because they're open about what they're ripping off doesn't make it better.
Looks decent. Will keep an eye on it.
Capybara companion?! Worth an insta-buy just for that.
Its nice to see an adventure in the Amazon Rainforest. That's refreshing. However, its a shame that the hero is a blonde white girl and the enemies are the native people.
Its like reenact a history of discrimination, violence and genocide.
She has a capybara. Sold!
It looks really really “inspired by zelda” though. Hope it tries to be unique.
too many Zelda clones have been a let down, Blossom Tales, Reverie, Ittle Dew and Ocean Horn (to name a few) left me wanting. So I find it hard to feel excited anymore..
Zelda like where have a capybara friend? Two plz
People need to stop copying the LttP trees, seriously!
I don't know, it's a bit "way too similar". But if it's well done, I'm in.
This reminds me, where's that fantastic Hazelnut Bastille? Oh, and Baldo! Those two looked really exciting.
Some of the graphics were definitly taken from Minish Cap, but the game looks cool I might get it
@Solomon18 I liked blossom tales! haven’t played the others. But what was lacking in your opinion?
@Urso I think you might be reading into that a bit much!
EITHER WAY
The game doesn’t look inspired, it looks like a cheap ripoff. Other retro games, like Cybershadow, are inspired, but they look like they can stand on their own. This thing, does not.
NINJA APPROVED
The trees are obvious, but I swear they’ve directly ripped the LttP graphics for Stalfos and Zoras too.
The graphics looks very much like The Minish Cap, so I'm immediately interested! By far one of the best 2D Zelda games, and I'm not going to accept anything to the contrary. 😂
Little rough around the edges in some places, and a little too close to rip-off territory in others. It nails the 16bit visual aesthetic a lot better than shovelware indies but it's got a long way to go toward being a compelling game.
Its combat looks atrocious.
It's this "action combat system" we as kids used to build in RPGMaker...
There is a good reason why Link's attack range spans at least another "tile" and isn't directly tied to its sprite...
Parts of this game are really appealing, but other things like combat and voice acting seem a bit rough around the edges. Will have to wait and see more!
Looks like it's using Minish Cap's graphic style which is fantastic, may definitely check this out once the game came to fruition. I welcome all inspiration games as long as they are good and original.
I get that the Zelda series is considered one of the best, although I've only actually played Phantom Hourglass on DS (and got bored of it), but it seems that every game that bears even the slightest resemblance to Zelda; either gameplay or artstyle gets labelled "Zelda-like" on here in a way that doesn't really happen with other games (admittedly the Kickstarter page for this game says trying to be Zelda like).
@BloodNinja
I think that's a question you may not be aware of, but I'm not reading too much into it.
I'm brazilian and I know the history of european arrival in South America. Indigenous peoples have been under attack for 500 years and it is still happening today. It's an ongoing ethnic conflict. The lands, cultures and lives of native people are still being wiped out.
Its sad to see that violence being romanticized. Think of a game in wich the hero kills the bad Cherokee or Navajo people. Wouldn't it be considered racist?
@Clyde_Radcliffe When the original Zelda was released, did you complain that it wasn't original but was merely an 8 bit version of Adventure? When Adventure was released, did you complain that it was just Colossal Cave Adventure reskinned? Zelda itself is a copy of a copy, so drawing the line at clones of it is a bit absurd.
@Urso Video games romanticize ALL violence, and I am fully aware of the history. Don’t cherry pick.
PEACEFUL NINJA APPROVED
@Friendly Inter-connecting level design mastery..
Looks like its inspired by Shantae too. Something about it seems off though.
@the_beaver
Hazelnut Bastille looks like it'll be great.
No updates in a while though.
@BloodNinja
Correction: all white led violence. But, ok, don't think about it too much. Let's just keep having fun with blond heroes who kill non-white people in their own lands. It's just a game, right?
@Solomon18 Blossom Tales was excellent - and had just enough of it's own flavour.
@Crimson_Ridley Just finished Minish Cap for the first time - loved it - and it's not as short as people say either - it was just right.
This game is apeing Minish Cap the most - then LttP - but if it's good it's good and I'll give it a go.
Looks really janky, eh...
The graphics look like they copied a little too much from Minish Cap
@Urso I'm Brazilian as well and I couldn't agree more. Really unfortunate choices by the Peruvian developers. It's a shame; it looks like a promising game.
Don't knock it alot of KS supported this project so if you don't like it don't buy it.
The one true Zelda clone is Okami and it deserves as much respect as that series.
Blossom Tales was good though
This game doesn't look bad. It does have a heavy a Link to the past vibe, but the story seems interesting. The one with the mask looks like Odolwa from Majora's mask. If Nintendo ever would do another story related to Termina, Odolwa would be a great villain, instead of the same Ganon story.
@Urso I think you’re trying to post on Kotaku. You’re on the wrong site.
NO NINJA APPROVAL
NINJA EVASION
ADDED TO IGNORE LIST
Wonder if she is related to the Girl from Ipanema.
@Solomon18 I feel the same. Blossom Tales was one of my biggest regret purchases.
@Joekun devs these days are capitalizing off of nostalgia for financial gain while Nintendo with LttP were actually pushing the tech and expectations above and beyond the limits through sheer force of talent and passion..
@JMR_Alden in my opinion Okami isn't a clone of Zelda, it has its own style and borrows some elements of the gameplay from Zelda which I believe is the definition of being "inspired by" something... unfortunately this game definitely feels like a clone and appears to lack a vital uniqueness which anything wanting to use Zelda as inspiration needs to have
I actually saw a really cool fan art for this game on Twitter. It's from another game that looks quite a promising it's inspired by Chrono Trigger too! https://twitter.com/BornofDreamers/status/1353034281166241794
