The very first trailer for the upcoming Monster Hunter movie has arrived, and you can check it out for yourself above.
Revealed exclusively by IGN, the trailer shows off a number of scenes you'll get to see in the final product, planned to launch this December. Some of the monsters featured include the Diablos, Apceros, Nerscylla, and more.
Here's the synopsis:
Behind our world, there is another: a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity. When an unexpected sandstorm transports Captain Artemis (Milla Jovovich) and her unit (TI Harris, Meagan Good, Diego Boneta) to a new world, the soldiers are shocked to discover that this hostile and unknown environment is home to enormous and terrifying monsters immune to their firepower.
In their desperate battle for survival, the unit encounters the mysterious Hunter (Tony Jaa), whose unique skills allow him to stay one step ahead of the powerful creatures. As Artemis and Hunter slowly build trust, she discovers that he is part of a team led by the Admiral (Ron Perlman). Facing a danger so great it could threaten to destroy their world, the brave warriors combine their unique abilities to band together for the ultimate showdown.

That Resident Hunter looks nice At least the effects that is.
Ew. Looks incredibly meh
This isn't a Monster Hunter movie. It's a Paul W.S. Anderson movie that happens to be based on Monster Hunter. As is tradition with his video game based films, it practically shares nothing in common with the source material outside the surface level stuff.
I'm not going to claim to be a MH afficianado considering I've barely gotten into the non-World entries but the test footage that leaked years ago of Rathalos tearing through Nathan Phillips Square in downtown Toronto while roaring like Tigrex told me everything I need to expect from this film, which is to say the absolute worst. I'm just personally tired of Hollywood taking the safe route and adapting games that have next to no plot into films when there are franchises that are way more tailor made for films.
Jordan-Vogt Roberts' MGS movie is literally the last hope for good video game films.
The only thing about this that I liked were how the monsters looked visually. Everything else looks to be the bland/generic experience that you'd expect from Hollywood.
In another dimension, videogame movies actually look like the videogames they're based on
Monsters look fine... everything else looks like the dumpster fire you'd expect it to be...
So this is what's become of the Transformers franchise.
So are all movies based on Capcom games from now on going to be directed and starring the same people?
I made it as far as that GOTG line, which just has to be a parody of the Suicide Squad line.
This doesn't look like it's going to help get people back to going out to the movies.
This looks ok. At least it kinda looks like Monster Hunter
I think people take this way too seriously. This is perfect, it needs to be dumb and fun.
Monsters, guns and one-liners aplenty... what else was to be expected? Sorkin level of dialogues??
God I hate Hollywood. WHY is it ALWAYS the same bogus idea of "They come to our world" or "We ended up in another world". Why couldn't it just straight up take place in the world of MH. Why is the military involved at all? I'm not signing up. Also a reference to Marvel which is totally unrelated? UGH... god this whole thing blows. Throw this in the pile of crappy Hollywood video game movies and lets move on. Now we wait for the new Mario movie trailer.
Actually looks ok. I’d watch it in theaters. CGI looks good. I’m ok with some mindless action. 👍🏼
@Supadav03 Exactly. People forget that most action movies are for some mindless action sequences like the last Resident Evil movies.
And there is nothing wrong with that.
I actually really loved Prince of Persia movie even if it only resembles the games.
I'll watch it for Gore Magala.
Okay... I have to say. The first time when i saw cars and guns inwas like mehh....
But this trailer brought me back on board!
Kinda cool.
Mortal Kombat would like to have a word...
Looks terrible. How this man gets work is beyond me
I don't play Monster Hunter games and yet this trailer insulted me
I don't know what people expect here. If you want to make a film like this on a high budget, you can't risk making a film that is good, but nobody watches. The safe route for a high-budget production is make a film that's been made 100 times before that people will watch even if it stinks. I'm not saying this will stink, just that it's generic enough to not be a huge financial risk.
Some of you here in the comments, just... Wow.
Even with Paul Anderson's Resident Evil movies were drivel, it's like you guys didn't even pay attention to the trailer and were caught up entirely in going "It looks soooooooo baaaaaad!".
From the look of things, it looks like the gate mentioned in the trailer goes both ways, and that the movie starts off with the soldiers going to the world of Monster Hunter and that monsters end up invading our world via the gate.
It's not entirely out of the realm of the lore either, as in, crossing over worlds like this. We have examples from the likes of Metroid, Mega Man, Street Fighter and more, and even the Behemoth from Final Fantasy, and the Leshen from the Witcher. Even with them being collaborations it hints that the World of Monster Hunter can and is frequently connected to others.
@TheFrenchiestFry his Mortal Kombat film is brilliant and rather close to the original. With some tweaks.
This looks fun!
Having accepted the direction they went in for the plot...at least we can appreciate the beauty and designs of the monsters. A production like this with its also-ran plot, but high production values and popular lead star, will only benefit the franchise, so that's a good thing at least.
@jsw-8 Mortal Kombat is a fun film, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's good
I have a lot of fun with films like Spider-Man 3, The Pest and Super Mario Bros. but they aren't actually that good
This ***** blows.
@MegaVel91 Just because the lore might be open to it does not mean its a good idea. This is literally a recycled idea in movies based on games, period. Sonic just came out not long ago and it also was just him coming to "our world". Another movie where characters either leave our world or others come to ours. This is just a lazy set up they are always doing. I could care less if Capcon approves it in the lore itself. I've seen it in movies already.
I don't blame the director, I blame Capcom for enabling the director to take it's beloved series and turn it into something that isn't "Monster Hunter".
I will admittedly say that the trailer looks better then the teaser did. I'm still not going out of my way to watch this.
Ugh. Not even sporty-boobs to be seen.
@Kirby_Girl Listen, I was expecting this to be an entirely one-sided thing where the Monster's were taking a one-way trip to our Earth and causing chaos and everything that would inevitably ensue with that plotline. The fact both worlds are going to be featured is better than I was expecting by a far margin, so I'm going to reserve my right to be cautiously optimistic.
@Al_Godoy It could be fun, highly entertaining and not dumb or at least the source material taken seriously in a fun and endearing way
I said it before and I will say it again this is Rampage
Of maybe this is the next part of resident evil
Well we have desert milla jovovich guns and monsters yeah this is the next part of resident evil
No thanks. I didn't get a Rise outta this at all O.< Playstation is welcome to associate itself with this cynical turkey.
Paul WS Anderson, your time is up. Your last decent film was Event Horizon. Come back Uwe Boll, all is forgiven.
@MegaVel91 the idea of involving our world at all does not appeal to me. I'm skipping this. I'm not that desperate.
@TheFrenchiestFry What's the point of straight adapting a game that's already basically an interactive movie into something not interactive and thus almost always worse? Like live-action cartoon/anime adaptations, they usually stink because we already have an almost 1-to-1 comparison.
Either way, the Resident Evil movies might now have followed the plot of the games, but they certainly had similar tone to those games, which is to say they were very tongue-in-cheek and silly, while having zoombies running amuck doing goofy things.
TL;DR This looks fun, adaptations need to adapt things or they're pointless.
@Zuljaras
Prince of Persia movie was a lot of fun, wish they had done a sequel
I'm going to give it a shot. The scenes with the vehicles and guns look to be from the beginning and ending of the movie, maybe. The weapon designs from the Monster Hunter world appear to be intact. You can tell that's a great sword and dual blades they are wielding. And when she does the dual blades up, catching fire while crossed above her head...she's going into demon blade mode. Also, the MH world...world...parts look like they could be taken from areas of the game with the little bits we saw: there was the volcano...the desert...the ancient forest. The monster designs are particularly looking well done, too. At first, when the first teasers came out, I was NOT a fan...now I'm definitely willing to give it a shot. It looks like good, MH fun to me. Do I wish it were taking place solely in the MH universe, with only Hunters, and Guild Marms, and quests? Sure...that would be fantastic...but I'll see what they've done with what they have here and give it a shot.
@Darthroseman I can agree with that point to an extent but since the PS1 era games have slowly been trying to mimic more and more movie qualities to the point where there are just so many options to choose from in regards to games that could translate perfectly to film if given the right script and a director who respects the property.
Games like Last of Us and Metal Gear Solid are so movie-like that the work is basically already done considering they're more like games you watch rather than movies you play, but the general hook is how gripping the narratives and characters are, and the kinds of messaging and underlying subtext the stories are usually oozing with, that can lend themselves to greater emotional weight. I even think Final Fantasy deserves another shot in that regard.
I like the idea that a human from our world gets transported to the world of Monster Hunter somehow, but the military weapons and vehicles I cannot get behind.
Would had been much more palitable to have her be transported and then meet the Hunter who would teach her how to survive the world by hunting like him and to have the plot be about getting her home somehow. I think these movies fail because they try and make them so 'action packed' they become generic.
The Anderson/Jovovich team makes good b-list movies. Quite enjoyable with a pizza and coke on a cold winter night.
Am I going to spend money and actually, in this current climate, risk going to the cinema to see this? No.
Will I watch it once it comes to Sky, very likely. It looks like trash, but actually like fun watchable trash... 🤣
@TheFrenchiestFry So true, it's like with all Anderson movies, seems incredibly arrogant to assume he knows better than to bother using the source material as his idea for the movie MUST be better.
I already ranted in the previous teaser article about how there's so much lore in Monster Hunter that doing the whole "transported" to another world concept was seriously unnecessary. We have enough films about our world, our reality and are very aware we exist in it. Is it so hard to understand that we want to escape this reality and see our video games come to life as we do when we play them?
As I previously stated it would be like if Peter Jackson started the 1st The Lord Of The Rings movie with a random idiot leaving a Burger King stumbling into a portal and poof he's in Middle Earth, meets Frodo & Co. and joins the adventure.
Too many warnings to ignore...
Yeah pass. She needs to go away. At the very least she should get divorced from Anderson we so can get a different lead. Hard pass. I feel like I’ve already seen this movie- 6 other times!
It's interesting how much they're focusing on the Diablos.
Nice to see Gore Magala will have a role though, I wonder if they'll let him evolve.
Yup...I've taken down a monster with just one hunter...If I know anything Milla probably passed out and was given some hybrid monster serum. Then she becomes "The One" and defeats all the monsters.
Why can't the movie be about a world that is made up already like Monster Hunter? Nothing to do with Earth and guns. Just a world that is all about Monster Hunter. How hard is it to make a regular movie?
This movie looks horrendous. I will not be paying to watch it. Why the heck did they think using the same director and actor was a good idea? Oh yeah, because somehow their spoopy Resident Evil movies actually made a ton of money. WTF is wrong with people?
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I'm not sure what's worse... Michael Bay ruining the complete Transformers franchise as I used to know them as a kid...
Or this... This... Abomination they call Monster Hunter movie...
Already sold. Monsters? What monsters? I don't need extra reasons to see Milla Jovovich.
All jokes aside, this definitely isn't going to unseat Sonic as the best video game movie ever (yes I said it, fight me).
Looks utterly generic and devoid of any wit or originality.
@Tendogamerxxx Now that you mention it, she does look the same in all her movies, but the first time I saw her in that Joan of Arc movie I thought she wasn’t that bad.
I'll probably see it, although the very concept of a Monster Hunter movie is just silly to me. These games have about as little plot as possible, and their main draw is the grindy gameplay of running down monsters and cutting them up for parts. Just doesn't make sense as a film, which needs a dynamic plot to be interesting...
Could they not just make a story in the monster hunter world instead of making it a land of the lost type movie? (Or an isekai anime for those of you that don’t know land of the lost) Advent Children to date has been the only game movie (besides Sonic maybe) that actually works!
Except for Detective Pikachu and Sonic, I haven't ever liked any movies based on existing video games. I'm already doubtful that I'll like this one, too.
I wish I could have a career in directing bad licensed films with my wife as the main star.
@MegaVel91 Well the problem here is that they decided to involve a military subplot at all. It's an easy out for writing a story completely set in Monster Hunter's world. Transformers, Doom did it twice and even Final Fantasy kinda did it with Spirits Within. They can't just write a good video game movie without a reliance on characters from our boring ass world. The only time it actually worked imo was Detective Pikachu.
@TheFrenchiestFry Detective Pikachu didn't involve stuff from our world though. The movie's story and setting is based on the Detective Pikachu game with some heavy tweaking, which in my opinion made the original story better in some ways.
@MegaVel91 Yeah exactly
It had human characters but it wasn't a case of humans coming to the Pokemon world like it is in all these other films. This is just the highest degree of laziness possible
The cliche dialogue and especially those reaction shot are particularly painful.
lol she barley scratches the monster with those blades xD...theyre all gonna die lol..
Why would anybody watch this crap when they can just play a Monster Hunter game?
You'd get more bang for your buck and the performances/direction is better too.
@Kirby_Girl Agree 100%. Tired of seeing properties forced into a modern context. Do they think audiences need to relate to the world in some way? We can't enjoy <choose your own game, comic, cartoon, etc.> unless they are in New York or Los Angeles? Ugh!
@RustedHero Please don't give Hollywood any ideas.
Dont see this guys.. companys need to no that inserting military doesnt make a movie good... Its not worth my time. Its shouldnt even have monster hunter slapped on it
@Kirby_Girl Couldn't agree more.
Hollywood in general is garbage. By the way, the military has to be involved in the plot because it has to have pro military propaganda, same reason the military is always promoted at sporting events.
Thanks, I hate it.
@teko well said.
I have zero interest in movies of this ilk, but if they weren't profitable, they wouldn't get made. Apparently somebody is buying tickets.
Just ewww for a MH movie. And if you never played the games then you might not understand why this movie will suck.
@Kirby_Girl Good point! They just keep remaking Stargate.
As prior said; another video game movie adaptation that is a relative 8 times removed from the parent material. For future guidance on how to adapt a game to movie and get it right consult Duncan Jones.
I guess it needs the military to be viable at the western box office.
Oh well.
This will be fun.
Wow a remake from the Resi 3 movie?
I'm still watching it. They're sort of consistent with the monster looks and screeches. There's a hunter in it too, so I don't care if it looks generic. I remember that Godzilla movie where it was mostly people talking and had a few glimpses of Godzilla himself, and people were bashing it. Now that the series redeemed itself with the sequel, where it had Kaiju fights on full display, people were bashing it for being mostly mindless action. This is why I don't care anymore, I prefer action. (I'm talking about the new American series, not the historic Japanese ones)
Put this way any Japan original movie White-washed is recipe for Doom (sarcasm) box offices. That's how it's been will always be til White Hollywood Studios wake up. Remember hollywood is trying to get $$ from Japan inspired popular anime/games but do a very Poor job at audiences.
Looks like the kind of a film in which you switch your cerebrum off.
@Kirby_Girl Lol cant wait to see the salt from that ineveitavle trainwreck.
Looks more interesting than generic fantasy medieval world with gaunt misters.
@Malones2792 I'm just gonna pretend it doesn't exist and only care about Rising. Can't wait for Rising!
