I remember enjoying Odin Sphere back in the day, although I don't think I finished it. I like the VanillaWare art style, and wanted to like GrimGrimoire and Dragon's Crown, but they just didn't grab me. Don't remember much about them, so may reconsider GG if this is released in the west, depending on the reviews.
Zelda has been getting a lot of love letters lately. Hopefully Link isn't the jealous type. This one looks like it has potential to me. Time will tell.
After this review, I bought it on sale yesterday. Although the developer seems competent, the game was just 'meh' to me. Only made it through the first 'world' (14 'levels') I would rate it a 5, not an 8. Many other better metroidvanias out there, and comparably priced when on sale. To me perennial sale game Goblin Sword is better than this.
@jon128 I recently bought FE: TH at Target (matched Amazon $10 off, better than nothing) and have been enjoying it. Played a few FEs over the years. I usually start out strong but run out of gas. So far Three Houses is continuing to hold my interest into Ch. 8 and about thirty hours play time. Playing on Normal difficulty with no permadeath, and enjoying the battles. It even has optional battles for practicing/grinding if desired. Plus a few other gameplay systems that are new to me, which are generally optional but helpful and entertaining. And although the story and dialogue is average, the voice acting is pretty good IMO. Much better the VA than Triangle Strategy Prologue demo. I will probably go for Triangle Strategy in the future when ready for another Tactical RPG.
I bought and played Space Pioneer about a year ago (for less than $1 if I remember), and it was actually fun for a while IMO. I also played Puzzle Book and think that it is worth a couple of bucks for someone looking to play jigsaw puzzles on switch.
Played some of the prologue demo. Hadn't played a(n) SRPG in a while, and thought what I played of the demo was decent ... except for the voice acting. Especially after recently playing Thronebreaker (amazing va), to me the va in TS is almost laughable. May get the game at some point anyway, but finally bought and have been playing Fire Emblem TH (va good although dialogue unsurprisingly cheesy IMO), so will probably be a while before TS.
I agree with the comments about most JRPGs (one of my favorite genres) being too long. I've run out of gas on plenty over the years. Not sure if this aspect was mentioned in another comment, but excessive length doesn't seem to make economic sense for the developer/publisher. I would think that cutting a game down from 120 hours(+), to 60ish would have to save a decent percentage of development costs.
I have played many RPGs over the years, but had never being drawn to card based games. A few months ago, while looking for something new, I took a chance on Steamworld Quest (having enjoyed the two SW Digs and read some Quest reviews), and was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it.
A few days ago, after becoming aware of and reading reviews for Thronebreaker: A Witcher Tale (although I haven't played the RPG or watched the series), I bought Thronebreaker and have been trying it out. Although I have enjoyed it to some extent, the complexity of the card mechanics, though impressive, may ultimately feel like too much work for me. I'm used to the combat mechanics of more traditional RPGs, but I plan to hang in at least a while longer. May take a chance on Faeria as well.
I seem to recall having trouble finding reviews when the first game was released, but I took a shot and I bought it then. Although I generally enjoyed it, I stopped near the end (may go back to finish it). Given the short length, I will wait for reviews on this sequel, and if similarly short, will probably pass. Too many other games.
I had previously read the rumor that a Switch version of Metroid Prime is complete. After playing through Metroid Dread a half dozen times, I booted up my GameCube and played a good amount of Metroid Prime. Unfortunately, my rose colored glasses were fogged up by the unnecessary (IMO) high amount of enemy respawns. I would only be interested in a Switch port with better graphics and QoL improvements.
I've played most of the Zelda's, but Majora's Mask just never appealed to me. I even vaguely remember possibly trying it and returning it (back when you could do that). Seems like most Zelda games have a few creepy characters, but more of a focus in MM. Not my bag.
The game looks impressive, and will have it's audience, but I am more interested in 'lighter' SRPGs like Vandal Hearts (if memory serves). I have tried a few Fire Emblems over the years, usually enjoying them for a while but ultimately running out of gas. I'm glad the Three Houses sold well, but looks like too much work for my taste. A new Shining Force could be nice.
@KateGray It's been almost a week, but I've been holding off on this game hoping that your site or another main stream site would review it on Switch soon. I'm assuming that NL was not given a review copy before the 'surprise' release, but I think that many of your readers would appreciate a review, so hopefully someone can find the time soon.
I've hit the big 6-0 and am grateful that I can still play and beat games like Metroid Dread. Nothing lasts forever, but I do play turn based RPGs as well. And there's always Picross, which is my puzzle addiction.
I enjoyed both BattleChasers and Darksiders Genesis on switch (don't remember any significant performance issues). Definitely interested, but will wait to see how it reviews.
I got a lot of mileage out of my GameCube w/Game Boy Player back in the day (still own them), but seem to remember becoming somewhat dissatisfied with the GameCube controller as other consoles/controllers appeared.
Don't have Nintendo Switch Online yet, but may consider it if some cool GBA games are made available. Many of the current NSO games just don't interest me enough to subscribe.
I generally like 2D Metroid games and have been mostly enjoying Dread. I have to admit that the EMMI sections were unexpected and probably the most frustrating for me, although I have been able to ultimately get through them (maybe six) so far. At this point, my approach is to run in and try to memorize the map as much as possible until the inevitability of DNA extraction lol. This approach has worked better for me than trying to sneak around. To each our own.
I give the overall game an 8 or 9, the EMMI sections a 5 or 6. But I tend to enjoy my second play through of metroidvania games more as I have a better understanding of the gameplay and patterns.
Although the environmental impact of Joy Con drift is probably a miniscule part of overall human impact, remember kids (and adults), the environment isn't something 'over there' that we can address or ignore at our leisure. It is in all of us. If 'the environment' gets corrupted enough, we can all say goodbye.
I have played plenty of RPGs, but not really understanding how this game would work, I played the demo, and was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it. Looking forward to it's release and reviews.
I think the only Kirby game I played was Planet Robobot, which I enjoyed for a while. The overgrown city reminds me of Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, which I also remember enjoying for a while.
Played the original Darksiders when it first came out. Remember enjoying for the most part, but skipped the sequels. This sale motivated me to buy and try Darksiders Genesis, and have been enjoying it. Maybe because I haven't played 100 similar games. The art is pretty amazing IMO. Played and enjoyed Battle Chasers: Nightwar a while back as well. Same developer Airship Syndicate.
Enjoyed NNK: WWW on ps3 for a while when it first came out, but lost interest fairly quickly. Seem to remember the combat getting tedious. Since review of 2 says combat improved, may take a shot down the road when on sale.
This whole overpaying for 'investment' video games (or anything else) reminds me of the title of a movie that was even before my time: 'Never Give a Sucker an Even Break'
For anyone who likes this genre, I recommend Operencia: The Stolen Sun on Switch. I played through most of it several months ago until the difficulty ramped up in one of the later areas. Could of probably made it through, but I was ready to move on by then. I enjoyed the experience for the most part. Also noticed it on sale a few months ago.
