Re: Talking Point: In 2023, Do You Still Care About amiibo?

MH4

I still collect amiibo. Not gunning for a full set, but I still try to pick up as many as I reasonably can just because I love the dang things. I got Sephiroth and Kazuya, got all the Splatoon 3 ones + the Splatoon 2 Purple Squid restock, and a few MHRise ones. I have an app to track my collection, and I have close to 200 individual figures. (Almost a decade of collecting will do that too ya, oops!)

The magic of NFC toys was never lost on me lol; I still get excited about NFC tech because of brands like amiibo and Skylanders. So in a way, it makes me happy that Nintendo is the “last bastion” of “toys to life” or something stupid like that. I love physical media interacting with digital media; it’s special in a way most other things can’t be, I think.

Like, for instance, last year I held a 32 Smash Ultimate amiibo tourney for my friends where each amiibo had a friend’s name on it, and the person’s amiibo that won the tourney got the person a bunch of little prizes. It was so fun watching the jankily trained AI fight with all items and Stage Morph on alongside a small crowd of people, and having each person’s character represented by a physical toy added to the “immersion,” for lack of a better term, of the event.

So yes, in 2023 I do still care about amiibo. However, I do foresee amiibo quietly being canned in a year or two. Maybe once the Switch branding leaves, so will the amiibo branding?

edit: i said “too” instead of “to”, argument invalid

Re: Ubisoft Share Price Tumbles After Dire Sales Report

MH4

@SwitchVogel Completely agreed. Last time I bought a full priced Ubi game was the original Mario + Rabbids and I learned my lesson there haha. I'm waiting for Sparks of Hope to dip to an appealing price because I know it eventually will. Not that I think they're bad games, I just know they'll inevitably go dirt cheap.

Re: Class-Action Lawsuit Claims Epic Games Knowingly Made Fortnite "Very, Very Addictive"

MH4

As someone who plays Fortnite very regularly, I have a few thoughts.

I can see the concerns. Some of the tactics with the level up quests can be seen as encouraging more playtime (such as making missions disappear after an amount of time has passed).

However, ultimately this sounds like parents refusing to take accountability for letting their kids get addicted to a video game.

The only way you can get addicted to Fortnite is the same way you'd get addicted to any other fun game you really enjoy - allowing yourself to. Similar to games like Tetris, Fortnite can have a very "one more game" air to it that makes you want to play more; however, one must have the self control to stop playing.

Children don't have that kind of self control. Growing up, my parents only allowed me to play games on the weekends and I'm glad they did - I absolutely would've become more of an extreme gaming fanatic had they not put in measures such as this to prevent that.

TL;DR - To me, this sounds like Epic Games made a fun game, kids got unrestricted access to said fun game, parents wonder why kids won't stop playing said fun game and decide to sue said fun game instead of parenting their kids.

Re: Feature: 30 More Things You Might Have Missed In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet

MH4

A bit off topic, but y’all are the only place I’ve seen that refers to these games as “ScarVi”. Nothing wrong with it (for sure beats typing out “Scarlet and Violet” five thousand times), but it was just something that I wanted to point out, haha.

To comment on the actual article, I didn’t realize the Pokémon size differences were that pronounced, I never caught the “Herba Mystica” reference, and I wish you could rename traded Pokémon more than once but at least you can do it at all. Cool finds all around.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (December 10th)

MH4

IT’S BIG RUN TIME BABY!!!

Gonna be playing Big Run in Splatoon 3 (this event goes so hard yall) as well as some Fortnite (new season is very fun). May try to sneak in some Persona 5 Royal, but I’m going to mainly try and dedicate this weekend to getting some personal projects done. Maybe if I’m good enough at budgeting my time, I’ll finally sit down and finish Popgoes Arcade on Steam. Probably not though, haha.

Yall have a great weekend!

Re: Poll: One Year After The DLC, Are You Still Playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

MH4

I always like to say with Animal Crossing there’s stages to how I play it. ACNL had stages of playing it every day consistently, burning out, and then coming back to play it consistently again. Burnout periods on ACNL were usually only a few months.

I stopped playing ACNH in like, Fall of 2020 and I’m still on the burnout period for that game. I just don’t feel motivated to play it at all ever.

Re: Talking Point: Which Scary Video Game Moments Gave You Nightmares As A Kid?

MH4

As a very little kid, I got nightmares from Smash Bros Brawl’s “game over” screen in Subspace Emissary. Something about that menacing orchestra sting combined with your lifeless character in a void scared the crap out of me.

A more conventional horror answer is that FNAF’s huge mainstream popularity happened when I was in around the ages of 11 and 12, and largely because of that franchise I now have a fear of what lurks in the dark when I’m alone. Thanks, Scott Cawthon! 😀👍

Re: Voice Of Mario Charles Martinet Thanks Fans For All The "Love And Kindness"

MH4

I met Charles at a local state convention back in 2018. My mother and grandmother took me to go meet him. I would've been 16 at the time.

He was so full of joy and genuine excitement. Even though he obviously wouldn't have remembered everyone he's met, he leaves such an impression on everyone he meets.

I got him to autograph my Gold Mario amiibo and he signed it from both Mario and Charles. As I left, he said in Mario's voice "Thank you so much for playing my game!" and I awkwardly replied in a Luigi voice "Thank you so much for making your game!" and he came back with a gleeful "Heehee!" as Mario. It was such a fun experience meeting him. He deserves the world.

Re: Talking Point: What's The Worst Game That You Still Love For Some Reason?

MH4

A good few of my most favorite games ever could fall under this umbrella, depending who you ask. ARMS and Fortnite aren’t exactly the biggest hits among us hardcore Nintendo fans, but I love those two games to death.

In terms of objectively bad games, a buddy and I played Lawnmower Game: Next Generation, a Switch eshop shovelware title, for our let’s play channel and we had an absolute blast. Any bad game is a good game if you play it with the right people.

Edit: I also really like crappy NES games. Urban Champion and Pro Wrestling as two of my favs.

Re: Among Us Appears To Be Doing A Hololive VTuber Collab

MH4

No matter what the crossover is, Among Usses dressed as other characters will never not be funny to me. The character design is so inherently simple, fun, and goofy that seeing them cosplay as Master Chief and VTubers feels very fun to me.

Re: Random: Game Development Lecturers Are Already Showing Off Sakurai's Videos

MH4

Professors using YouTube videos is nothing new (last semester my Social Problems prof played a video from the channel Company Man about a large scale financial scandal; I nearly fell out my seat when I heard the intro), but this is still really cool. Given that it’s Sakurai and his channel is so new, the teach probably didn’t just stumble upon it and is also a fan, which is an awesome thought.
