It's about balance. Play games, play sports, make art, and do work or study. Gaming can be addictive and at some point it can become unhealthy, but that's a miniscule percentage of gamers. For the most part, I think gaming keeps a lot of young people out of trouble and that's a good thing.
@Smurfy0730 I enjoyed Cross Code a lot but the twin sticks gameplay isn't for everyone. I think I would have liked it more as a hack n slash style RPG like Secret of Mana. The story, however, was excellent. Anyone that has played and enjoyed MMORPGs should check it out.
Dread I agree with, but I'd put Metroid 2 a lot higher, like possibly even second place higher. Not a fan of the Other M or Prime designs to be totally honest.
After two prior attempts, finally mustered up the courage to play Amnesia: The Dark Descent around Thanksgiving. The game was so brilliant I jumped right into A Machine for Pigs which I'll be finishing up this weekend.
I was ready to drop it after 7 to 10 hours but the story does end up improving so I'm glad I stuck with it. The characters are okay outside of the two completely boring leads. My biggest issue is an issue I have with most modern JRPGs and it's that they're not really RPGs. Progression is very limited and levels tend to be capped to ensure you never become over powered. I long for the days of FF6 when if you wanted to grind and over level, that was your choice to make. And still that game had challenging and strategic fights. Nowadays, most RPGs ensure you're always at the appropriate level with the appropriate skills, nothing more nothing less, and it seems like lazy game design to me.
My guess is Switch 2 is sub PS4 levels. I don't like it but I've read this book before. As Nintendo fans, we just need to realize that we will not only never have cutting edge graphics, but that were probably going to be a generation and a half behind. Hopefully Nintendo makes up for it in other ways.
I'm just trying to figure out what these comments mean. The sentiment is it's outdated, too expensive, and unnecessary, yet you all cherish the memories? To me, E3 was the most fun time of year for gaming announcements and nothing has replaced it and probably never will. I don't find Directs to be all that compelling. I don't dispute the expenses involved to participate, but I'm not going to lie and say it's some relic or the past and good riddance.
Is Blast Corps on Switch yet. I feel like most games from this era, 1080 included, haven't aged particularly well, but Blast Corps was so unique there has never been another game like it to compare it to. As far as 1080 goes, I remember thinking it was pretty light on content even back in the day, but I did drop countless hours in the half pipe. I remember being blown away by how the coats moved in the breeze as the boarders zoomed down the hill.
For a game that's 90 percent download, why not just release them separately as eshop games? I have the trilogy on series S and from what I played of the third game, switch players aren't missing much.
I'm confused as to why you would review this game. It's been out on other platforms forever and everyone knows how it plays. Technical analysis of the port can undoubtedly be found all over the internet.
I won't support it. Switch is like the last bastion for physical games. The hoops you have to jump through to play multiple downloaded games at the same a time on multiple switches is ridiculous. If my kids are playing Lego City I can't play Amnesia because they're using my account? Thanks, I've only spent 750 dollars on Switches to be able to do this.
BGE2 not seeing the light of day is a good thing. What little they previewed was not at all what I was hoping the game would be. Ashame because BGE1 is an all time classic.
Nintendo life addressed not reviewing one of the biggest releases of the year on their forum. Essentially they provided no valid reason that they aren't reviewing this game, other than to say "you can read reviews and get technical analysis elsewhere." I would like a review of Bluey since kids really love the show. Mario RPGs numbers seem pretty mid but it probably has more to do with the price point than anything.
I just wish there was more to this. A monster list is nice, but how about some new content? You can faithfully recreate a game and still add additional content. The game itself will always be special to me as it was my first RPG, but I'm just not that impressed with what's on offer here.
Game is great, thought the map system was okay. I like that it tells you if the room is cleared or not. Salt and Sanctuary is another fantastic souls like metroidvania and that game has no map at all. Both games have great atmospheres.
I agree on the Tour tracks. I don't really care for any of them. DK and Bowser levels are easily the highlights, and the rainbow road track is solid. Peachette seems to look just like Peach? Would have rather had the football guy from Mario golf.
Is this the same Free Radical from the Timesplitters days or not? If it is, they haven't released a game in nearly a decade. How can you keep paying them?
It's a Nintendo console so I'm fully prepared to be underwhelmed from a pure horsepower perspective. I don't want to use the word gimmick, but I do expect something "different" that the other big players aren't doing. If they just release a Switch that more consistently hits 1080p and 60 fps, I just don't think that's gonna cut it.
They didn't use Twin Snakes for the MGS1 reboot? I never played anything after MGS2. Tried 3 but never got far. I'll probably pass on this unless it goes on deep discount.
This game is really good and really overrated. The story is very good but the characters are generally quite boring. The combat is fun but lacks depth. The game looks and sounds great but the progression system and "leveling" system is unimaginative and again, lacks any real depth. They've nailed the look and feel but really needed flesh out the characters both from a story and gameplay perspective. It's still a lot of fun and generally does scratch the SNES RPG itch pretty well.
I'm currently playing Mario Deluxe on the Switch. I tried it months ago and it didn't really click. I'm back into it now collecting gold coins and honestly, it's pretty good. It's not Super Mario World but I feel that it's got solid level design and controls pretty well. The "powers" are a little lacking and not being able to take Yoshi from one level to another is bogus, but I think overall it's "better" than most give it credit for. That being said, I will take a wait and see approach with Wonder. It doesn't really feel like the huge refresh I think fans of 2D Mario have been clamoring for.
I'll play this right after HL2 Episode 3, Beyond Good and Evil 2, and Metroid Prime 4. With Duke Nukem Forever still in my backlog, it might be awhile before I get to this.
Also not related, but would love a remake of The Last Story. I think that's the only other noteworthy Nintendo exclusive RPG I missed at its original release.
Does the Japanese physical edition have English text? The utter lack of a physical NA release is infuriating. Between that and the removal of the English dub, it seems like they want this to fail. Having missed out on Origins, I will probably still buy it, but really want a physical copy.
Salt and Sanctuary absolutely should be on the list. My favorite from the list is probably Ender Lillie's. Not sure if other metroidvanias have emulated it, but ender Lillie's tells you if a room is "complete," (i.e. all items obtained) which was a great quality of life type of improvement. I'm actually playing the Metroid Prime remake at present and wish this game did something similar.
I appreciate SotN, but I really feel there are better modern metroidvanias out there. The Silent Hill franchise not being on Switch is a tragedy. Konami is a company that seemingly has no idea what it's doing. Silent Hill 3 was the most graphically impressive game of the PS2 era and it was never used to make another game. The Room actually looked worse than Silent Hill 3 graphically. The trailer for the reboot also didn't really do it for me. Ashame because the original 3 silent hill games stand among the best the genre has ever seen.
@samuelvictor X is probably the hardest Xenoblade to start with. If you like more linear, start with the original or remake. It's linear in storytelling and progression, but let's you wander of the path a bit, not unlike some of the classics from days past. Xenoblade X is pretty much straight open world. 2 and 3 are maybe slightly less linear than 1, but they're all great. X is just the least traditional.
As long as my downloads carry over I'm happy. This nonsense of losing all your old downloads whenever a new console is released needs to end. Backward comparability with the Switch carts I'd understand if it wasn't present. I suppose that should depend on what the media storage solution is that they're using.
@Cashews Elden Ring was a good experience but it can't maintain its quality throughout and is probably 5 to 10 hours too long. I still feel the original Dark Souls is the pinnacle of the Souls formula, with Bloodborne being a close second.
@CoastersPaul I'm not saying the games since 12 are bad, I actually like 12 and to some extent 15, but they're no longer the gaming events they once were from FF7 to FF10, where every game was hyped to no end and mostly delivered. I'd also make the case that combat evolved relatively slowly from 1 to 10, and then Changed entirely thereafter. I'll end by saying FF13 is a disgrace. Terrible plot and characters, terrible pacing, horrible battle system which could be exploited to no end, and as I recall the introduction of hard level caps which to me represents terrible game design. I will eventually play 16 when a console I own inevitably gets a port down the road, but I'm not super excited about it. Likewise, I'll probably eventually play the FF7 remake but again, a decade ago I would've considered pre ordering a game in this series for day 1 release, now they're just another "pretty okay" series.
