@frabbit it would be nice if Nintendo could get back to the days of having relatively competitive hardware. In fairness, their strategy has worked for the most part, and their consoles can always do something unique the others can't.
Stories being disconnected are going to make it a pass for me. Bought OT1 day 1, didn't read much on it, but graphics were like what FF6 would look like in HD and I love the genre. Was very disappointed with the way the story was told. Later game bosses became endless battles against piles and piles of HP, only to be abruptly ended when a boss would go into a new phase 30 minutes in. Honestly one of the most disappointing RPGs to me in a long time.
I paid 70 dollars 25+ years ago for an SNES cart of Street Fighter 2 Turbo. Game prices are very fair, particularly for non special or collectors editions. With inflation in the last year, it's probably about time standard releases go up to 69.99.
Goldeneye, like most games from that era, is probably better remembered than played current day. I find it hard to play almost any 3D game from N64 and PSOne today, and I'm not a graphics snob. The devs just had not mastered 3D yet.
I have no idea what's gone on in the MG series since after MGS3. Are the "newer" titles any good? I just finished Nier Automata and as a result went out and bought the first Bayonetta to give it a try... I'd be willing to try anything Platinum Games makes after playing Nier.
@ketrac I only remember a trailer that was overly "mature" and some of the devs talking about how advanced it would be... Felt like they were ignoring why the first game is held in such high regard.
@YoshiF2 I think they're all similar in quality, though I might give the overall nod to XB1 because it was first and still might have the best narrative. I do agree though, one of the rare series where the worst games in it are still really good. The only other series that applies to in my mind is Dark Souls.
Life will be a subscription model soon. I will support whoever maintains physical gaming. I subbed to game pass for a few months but only played it a little bit. It's like the Netflix of gaming. I spend more time looking for something to play than actually playing. I can see the value but for me, I prefer to buy the games individually.
Octopath looks like a proper remaster of FFVI yet they refuse to remake that game in this style. Meanwhile they release this random and obscure game with the visual upgrade. I don't really get it. It looks interesting but stories have come a long way since Super Nintendo and I'm not sure a story driven game from that era, with no nostalgia factor, can deliver.
Nobody cares about the graphics. The highlight of this game is the soundtrack. Sure, we'd all love modern remasters of the PSOne era final fantasies and Chrono cross, but square is too busy releasing a portion of ff7 remake every 12 years to do anything else. Their lazy ports of old games must fund their ff7 remake development costs. Still, at least we can play these remasters and remember how awesome the company once was.
Looks cool but not getting a RE or Eternal Darkness vibe at all. Hopefully it at least has puzzles where you find octagonal coins to place in octagonal recesses?
Nothing ever grabs the real spirit of these 80s classics. I shall read your review but I'm not optimistic. This franchise has not been great in any format since the original trilogy.
Looks good, if not a bit too much like Zelda. To me, the greatest Zelda like games are Legacy of Kain and Darksiders. Darksiders is one of my favorite series on the Switch.
@BlackenedHalo surprised the soundtrack isn't that good. I know in many games, Mitsuda only composes a track or two, but they're always awesome. Even subpar games like Legaia 2 and Sands of Destruction were partially saved by his music.
Whatever part of the soundtrack Yasunori Mitsuda did I'm sure is phenomenal, but goodness gracious that voice acting is atrocious. Outside of Xenoblade, I just don't think anyone is willing to fund a great JRPG anymore. It's sad all these games have such low budgets.
Deaths Door and the League spinoff will be added to my wishlist. This month, I picked up some older games on sale, namely Hob and Pillars of Eternity. Hob, so far, is excellent - best couple bucks I've spent on the eShop this year for sure.
I had a pair of these from last year's holiday season. Nice pads from a "feel" standpoint, but my left stick developed terrible drift after about 6 months. I much prefer the analogs on these to the Joy Cons but can't justify a new pair every 6 months. EDIT: And actually, it wasn't so much drift, but the stick would just be unresponsive for 1 or 2 seconds at a time. I'd be running in Apex Legends and just stop for a second here and there. Might've been a connectivity issue but no issues with my original Joy Cons on the same switch so who knows.
The company is going to fold, which will likely hurt the very people we want to help more than the top brass that will drift away into the sunset with golden parachutes. My opinion is I don't want to hear PR from one of Activision's partners (i.e. Sony, MS, Nintendo). Either drop their games or keep selling them on their platforms. That's the decision they have. It's not that difficult. Run your business the way you want to run it and let the stakeholders decide if you succeed or fail. Most consumers probably don't care about any of this, as they regularly support, without even blinking, companies with human rights violations up and down their supply chains.
My favorite in the series without question. I always think of OoT as ALttP in 3D. Both great, but the first always is the best. Subsequent Zelda games have been hit or miss with me, with Breath of the Wild finally reinventing the formula enough to make it feel magical again.
@Pod If true, that should be in the article to give context to the size of the walkout. Many will read 150 people but not realize how many FTEs the company actually has. Not defending the CEO, but wondering why completely relevant information is often missing from news stories.
I dream of a day people return to physical games, arcades, shopping malls, and records. Digital is fine and convenient, but nothing replaces a physical asset. I can't fathom why anyone would buy a non fungible token besides those interested in volatile investments. That being said, I'm sure there is something about them that is appealing, but I don't know what it is and I don't really care to.
My kids absolutely love Lego City Undercover ... Is this game more like that or more like Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 where there really isn't an open world? Looking to get something new for them but they never really got into this games sequel.
I've been playing a lot of Tetris 99 but I should probably invest in Tetris Connect, as I find it impossible to win in Tetris 99 anymore. I finished Ni Ni Kuni 1 last week and started the SNES version of Trials of Mana via the Mana collection this week. Overall, that series doesn't really hold up to the greats of that era, but is still solid, so I will probably at least finish the 3rd game of the collection.
The game was okay on N64, what with all the new game droughts that console had, but wouldn't pass nowadays as there are too many outstanding 2D platform games available. Might be of interest for gaming history buffs that missed it initially and at least it can be completed quickly.
While Sunshine, Galaxy, and Odyssey are all good games, nothing has yet captured the magic of Mario 64, probably because we will never make anything similar to the 2D to 3D jump again. It was captivating for a kid in that era to see Mario in full 3D and experience analog controls. An almost perfect game, but I would like to see the series redefine itself, much like with BotW did for Zelda. I'm not sure if an open world is the answer, but something to recapture some of that magic of playing something "new" which Mario 64 had in spades.
@Hero-of-WiiU Trying to remember, but I think you started from the beginning each time you loaded it. Replay came from mastering the levels and taking different paths to the end.

Re: Soapbox: Xenoblade Chronicles X's Influence Is Bigger Than You Think
