Re: Nintendo Explains Why Mario Kart World Isn't Called 'Mario Kart 9'

Eel

Mario Kart was in a similar situation as Smash Bros, with the most recent game basically representing a maximalistic culmination of what the franchise has been known for. So yeah it was due time for a refresh.

And I suspect we can expect Smash Bros to try something new as well, whenever the next entry to that series comes around.

Re: Nintendo: Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Imprisonment Is A "Canonical Tale"

Did people really want to play the true unchanged story of the great calamity? I mean, we already knew they all die in the canon version. That’d be no fun. It would basically end right after the real war starts and then all the champions die and the princess becomes a pokeball.

Without the little robot there to amplify the sheikah slate, and start the war off early, there’d be no reason to even have that many battles and no way to use the runes and towers. So it’d be what? Like four chapters of wandering around recruiting champions, with a sudden downer ending right as the calamity starts.

With the war of imprisonment we at least know they did win. With it basically being an alternative version to Ocarina of Time with goat people; so they actually do have stuff to work with this time.

@JumpingJackson they introduced it as “a story 100 years before Breath of the Wild”. But they never used the word “canon” when referring to that one.

If you wanted to be particular about it, I suppose saying “a story” instead of “the story” gave them enough wiggle room.

Here they’re being unusually direct.

@Polvasti many Zelda fans get very touchy whenever any spinoff title is considered (even remotely potentially) canon by other people. It’s like, offensive to some.

I do agree with you though, and even the first Hyrule Warriors was clearly made so it fit in the child timeline without messing outside of it (originally). It only started adding characters from the other branches in Legends, after establishing Phantom Ganon as capable of bending dimensions with Cia’s magic (whereas Cia limited herself to opening portals to different points in time).

@Olmectron it’s completely possible for them to focus on Zelda without Link, as a continuation of their efforts to make Zelda a frontline character in her own adventures.

Either way, they’re also perfectly capable of making Rauru himself, or a mysterious Zonai warrior based on the costume Link can unlock in TotK, the “Link” of the story (in terms of gameplay).

And yes, the game being canon doesn’t forbid them from adding fun extra characters and scenarios that don’t affect the main plot.

Re: Random: Local Supermarket Wins Trademark Battle Against Nintendo

Eel

@StewdaMegaManNerd @8bit-Man Anyone in Latin America would be immediately aware that the “super” in the name refers to the type of business. It’s like saying Restaurant or Cinema: a common name for a specific type of business.

This is a supermarket (a “super”) named “Mario”. Had the Mario in question opened a restaurant instead, it would be “Restaurante Mario”, for example.

Now if they had a literal Super Mario of the Bro variety painted on the wall or in the logo, then they’d have a point. But as things are, Nintendo truly only embarrassed themselves with this one.

Re: Harvest Moon's New "Cozy" Switch Bundle Revives Two 3DS Titles This Summer

@MasterGraveheart I don’t think there’s any post-split HM games with timers or anything like that, beyond the usual “crop/item is only available in certain season” as with all farming games.

The Lost Valley had an infamous example though, where an early quest will request a crop you can only obtain in spring (the game has you restoring the seasons, so chances are you’ll only be able to enjoy very few days of spring on your first year, if any). Ultimately though, it’s not an important or necessary quest, but back then it had all of us scrambling trying to get the crop.

Re: Rumour: Removed EA App Listings Suggest More MySims Revivals Might Be On The Horizon

Beacon Bay? I know it’s MySims, but a remake of The Sims 3 DS with proper good graphics would be kind of nice!

It was the one and only handheld Sims game of the era that actually played like a real Sims game, and it had some cool ideas and features. But the characters were just so ridiculously ugly, switching them with MySims characters alone would be a huge improvement.
