I gotta ask, who's behind some of the character designs in these quirky indie games? Just about every time I see a game like this, the characters look like stock Gen Z folks. Which really doesn't blend in with the setting.
For me, when I see characters like this, I don't see anything that stands out from the others. They just sorta all have this sameness to them.
@sanderev I don't see those criticisms as being harsh or mean.
Nintendo games for the most part, are super easy. Nothing wrong with wanting a bit of challenge every now and then. Also nothing wrong with wanting a little extra wow factor instead of the same ol'.
Kirby is my favorite character, but I can't get into the games anymore because of the lack of challenge. I can see the reviewers point of view.
@DaniPooo "On the origin of the name "Link", Miyamoto said that "Link's name comes from the fact that originally, the fragments of the Triforce were supposed to be electronic chips. The game was to be set in both the past and the future and as the main character would travel between both and be the link between them, they called him Link"."
@Daigoras I think Link should talk now. In the past you could rename him anything you want, because you were the Elf Kid.
But the moment Nintendo made Link his offical default name in BOTW, imo is the moment where Link is no longer me. He is an established character.
In the JPN version of BOTW, Link's adventure log is written in first person. That means Link actually forms his own thoughts and speaks. Therefore personally, I think it's okay now if Nintendo gives him a voice. He technically has one in written form.
@Arawn93 True, but then again Tom cruise and other entertainers for that matter serve no real important function in life. Yet we say whatever they do is an actual job.
If you removed Tom Cruise from the world, nothing important would be loss. If you removed Nintendo from the world, nothing important would be loss. This can apply to 99% of the media we consume.
If you removed doctors, scientists, farmers, drivers, then the entire planet is doomed. If you removed all of Hollywood, youtube, videogames, then the only loss is arguably your joy.
Entertainment is a self choice career. Those who seek it already know the risk of failure. However if they succeed it counts as a job.
Personally, I don't care how you make a living. Just as long as it's not illegal and you pay your fair share of crappy taxes.
@RainbowGazelleYo are missing alot. According to fans, critics are evil and full of hatred. Mario is the best movie ever made int he history of animation.
By far better than any film released in the last 50 years and should win every prestige award ever. Anyone who disagrees is just a hater.
@RetroGames What is with people thinking that is only voice Charles can do? People act like the man can't change his voice style to better suit a film if he was tasked so by the director.
@samuelvictor I disagree. I don't think there was a hidden motive against Amy. The tight focus was on the core three games. Where Amy wasn't a featured playable character.
Mighty and Ray isn't evidence as they weren't even planned from the start. The two only made it to increase the value due to requests for a physical release of the game. And were chosen due to their obscurity. If anything, it's nice Sega wanted to remind fans their were quite a cast of characters back in the 90's forgotten by the 3d titles.
Lastly, Amy never had a complete playable sprite. It's not a 1,2,3 and done type job.
Creating entirely new animations, coding them, bug fixing, altering level design to accommodate, eats up time and budget, which the team didn't have alot of.
When you are just buying a product, it's easy to be upset when a feature you hoped for didn't get in. It's different when you working on a game trying to get everything done within a time frame.
I'm sure no one on Mania team was thinking "let's diss Amy hehe." She didn't get in the same reason the choatix team didn't. Or the Shadow fans who were upset (for some weird reason).
@Kang81 I'd be okay with it but Nintendo practices over the years have left a sour taste in my mouth.
-Charging the same price for a port of as if it was new
-Locking a game feature behind an overpriced toy
-Lazy ports that are over priced (Twilight princess, Mario Collection)
-Charging 50 extra dollars for a new switch screen
@Ryu_Niiyama Well yeah. Link was designed to be a blank slate. While on the one hand that allows the player to be in the role, the other it doesn't allow for Link to be anything but a character who stares blankly as the world reacts around him.
So much of the discourse around him as character comes from outside media such as lore, books, non-canon stuff.
But now that Link is no longer the player and is in universe an established character, I failed to understand why he is the same blank slate in BOTW.
That is one my issues with the game. You feel no sense of urgency because Link just hardly reacts to anything. He doesn't react to be woken up 100 years later, or even to the events of wthat happened. Meanwhile every other character is going through a range of emotions.
Mario is the star of the movie - check
Mario is going to save the day - check
So you're telling me, that main character of this film, the flasgship of Nintendo who spend millions to retain his image, who ultimately are the ones that approved the final script, are going to let a film be made where Mario is a weak stupid incompetent male who can't do anything?
@Takoda Sorry, but Sonic and melodrama just don't mix. The writing and dialogue in games are just bad.
Like seriously, who at Sega thought forcing the player to watch a makeout session between a human and animal was a good idea?
If people enjoy the writing in those games (which has aged poorly) then so be it. But 90's Sonic was way cooler. No end of the world stuff, no edgy darkness, Just a blue dude slapping around a giant egg every weekend.
The people who write these stories are bad writers. They don't know how to write. And before you bring in the IDW guy, just know he really didn't have much creative input in Sonic Frontiers.
But so be it, I'll stick with the 2d game. I'd rather have zero dialogue and plot vs a cringe one.
@TYRANACLES Maybe a touch dramatic, but I believe Switchforce is merely pointing out America isn't a paradise. Yeah other places have it worse, but we've our own set of problems too.
@Matroska Agreed. Sonic's transition into 3d was rough when compared to other games.
Without nostalgia glasses, the only way Sega could get around Sonic's simple formula within the 3d sphere was to add terrible game gimmicks.
Sonic Adventures games did this by adding terrible secondary gameplay modes via side characters. As such that did more to hamper his big titles than help it.
The only thing Sega knows what to do without abandoning that core is adding janky game gimmicks that do more harm to Sonic than good.
@B3RTAY Well honestly, I don't see a problem with what Clyde is saying. Think of the many people you've met or saw that have walked out during the credits of a film. Or how many turned off a movie, or how many people pressed the skip button during the end credits.
Clyde is just saying that with options no one would be forced to sit through the credits while still giving proper credit. Half the majority don't watch credits but we give them anyways to acknowledge the hard work put into a product.
People in the industry pretty much know the average person won't sit through the credit screen. Heck even some of them don't either, but it's still done regardless.
@blindsquarel Honestly I think companies should charge more. Hopefully in the future the big 3 will make the base price per game at least 150$ minimum.
Or heck, make everyone pay the base price plus an activation fee to play. 70$ + 30$
Even better 599$ for the console + 599$ for the game. Cables, controllers not included, and must be purchased separately.
@Serpenterror Yeah, true, but the Neo Geo originally was never going to be a home console. It was originally going to be rented out to stores. It's only due to high demand that a home console version was made. It was advertised a luxury console due to just how advance it was back then.
The manufacturing cost of the GEO was expensive because it was originally meant to be an arcade cabinet which at the time wasn't cheap to make.
@ParadoxFawkes True. I don't how Ash has been for over 2 decades. I'd imagine if the formula hasn't changed much in that long it's due to popularity.
But, it' an achievement to stay relevant for nearly 30 years for a cartoon series. Many shows that aired from Japan during those days didn't make it even half as long. Some falling into obscurity.
Atleast he's going out on a high note. It could be worse. Ash could be Spongebob who's with two bad spinoff shows.
@Serpenterror That too. Nintendo is in it's own ballpark where there is hardly any competition. The company made a smart move with the switch vs just another high end gaming box.
@BabyYoda71 Well I mean , then that's your choice. Saying you have no other option when you picked the product is no excuse.

If you enjoy Black Adam and Sonic that's fine! But just like you, there many like me who agree with the critics that both Black Adam, and Sonic Frontiers is bad.
If the audience opinion is more valid than critics, then those who dislike the game and the movie, are just as equal to those who enjoy both.

"Wario Land: Shake it!", just rolls off the tongue better than "Wario Land: the Shake dimension".
