Re: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Technical Director Reveals More About The Labo VR Update

DonSerrot

I've been waiting for a screenshot of how the 3D looks. Now I can dust off the old Google Cardboard headset to see what games would look like with Nintendo's cardboard. I've seen so many people doing video reviews saying there's no point in trying to capture video footage of it since people couldn't see it, but all it'd take is putting our phones into existing phone VR headsets.

Re: Soapbox: I Don't 'Get' Smash Bros. And I Just Don't Know Why

DonSerrot

For me I've always enjoyed Smash Bros in bursts. I remember my best friend at the time getting a copy of 64 and us and our sisters having big 4 player battles while our mothers sat upstairs and talked about whatever they talked about back then. At the time it was something fast paced, exciting, and featured characters that we all loved. We got Melee at some point later after we finally got a GameCube. By that time I wasn't seeing as much of my friend so it was mostly just my sister and I or just me doing classic mode. I had fun with it, but not enough to understand the obsession a lot of people have with that particular entry in the series. When Brawl came it it was pretty much just down to me playing alone. Subspace Emissary made up the bulk of my play time for that one. I was excited about the prospect of online but I didn't give that more than a couple tries before deciding to just stick with CPUs. I got both the 3DS and Wii U copies of the next in the series, and I honestly preferred the 3DS version. If I had some down time somewhere I could just pull out me 3DS and play a couple rounds to pass the time, and it seemed like there was always a bunch of people in the lobby at conventions playing Smash while waiting for the next panel. The Wii U version was good for playing with my nephew (team battle, us VS CPUs) so those two entries had a bit of the social aspect return for me. Still didn't care much for the online. Now with Ultimate is more or less the same. I put the bulk of my time into unlocking characters and the World of Light, I play a couple fights here and there with random CPUs when I feel like it, and I put my nephew in his place when he starts talking smack. And I still don't care for the online. I realized that I don't play it with people just to have a better opponent. If I wanted that I could just up the CPU or get some more amiibo. I play with other people for the social interactions. For the laughing and cheering and general shenanigans that comes with a party game. There are a lot of competitive minded people who want 1v1 no items no stage hazards, I want as many players as I can get with all the items and stage shenanigans with people picking random character if they feel spicy. That's probably why I never could get into the competitive scene, they're only playing a small percentage of the game content. Cool if you want to get into the more technical side of the game, but it's just a bit too serious for me.

Re: Ubisoft Will Not Release Any Additional Starlink Toys For Future Updates

DonSerrot

I really enjoyed this game, but the whole toys thing kept me away from it until the big sale. If they had skipped the toys and used the Digital Deluxe as the base $60 game instead they could have had a real winner. Not even the full Deluxe, just the full core team of pilots/ships. The pilots you meet later could have been drip fed to people as DLC every couple of months or something and things would have been much better.

I'm still hoping to eventually see a toyless sequel, and I think Ubisoft could make a really good full fledged Star Fox game if given the chance. Starlink honestly felt close enough to being a proper Star Fox game for me to consider it an adopted member of the Star Fox family.

Re: Ori And The Blind Forest For Switch Spotted In UK Wholesale Database

DonSerrot

The rumors are seeming more and more plausible. If this does pan out then there's hope yet for Banjo and Kazooie to make a triumphant return to Nintendo hardware. Be it in Smash or with an HD remake of the originals, either way I'd be happy. Who knows, maybe Nintendo and Microsoft could work out a deal to remake DK 64! These are exciting times for sure!

Re: Takahashi, Miyamoto And Shiota Discuss Proportion Of Female Employees In Nintendo’s Development Departments

DonSerrot

I think a big thing to remember is gaming has been generally more male focused for a long time. I'm not so much talking the games themselves as I am the general perception of who gamers are. Young gamers are more likely to grow up to be game developers than those who weren't gamers when they were kids. With the gaming population from the 80's and 90's leaning more towards the male side it just makes sense that there'd be more guys interested in making games than girls. These days there are all sorts of educational programs aimed at getting girls interested in programing, but those programs aren't going to magically get results over night. Companies need to hire the right people for the job, not the right person to fill a quota. Now that gaming has become a more general thing I'm sure we'll see things naturally balance out, but I feel that trying to force balance is wrong. Ko Shiota's point at the end there sums it up perfectly. There aren't nearly as many women interested in working on hardware as there are in software, but hopefully interest in the hardware side of things will increase with interest in Nintendo's unique technologies. It needs to happen naturally, and it seems like Nintendo understands that.

Re: Locked Character Roster In Smash Bros. Ultimate Raises Concerns About Tournament Play

DonSerrot

So... what do they do for other games that have unlockable characters? Do tournaments have just one person running things? If you feel you need 5 consoles for the tournament then just have 5 people do a unlock session and you are set for all future tournaments. If you're savvy you could even see about having some of the competitors do the unlocking for you as part of their training or whatever.

Re: Billy Mitchell Live Streams 1,050,100 Point Donkey Kong Game

DonSerrot

I don't think his ability to get these scores was ever in doubt. I mean, the man did legitimately become the first to get a perfect score in Pacman. The problem was with the fact that he did cheat at one point. That did unrepairable damage. The punishment should stand as a deterrent to any potential cheaters. No matter how skilled you actually are, if you decide to take a shortcut to a world record you are in the wrong and there are some heavy consequences.

Re: Director Junichi Masuda Explains Why Eevee Is One Of The Stars In Pokémon Let's Go

DonSerrot

Back in the day with my copy of Red I always had an affinity for Eevee. It just always seemed so cool that there was a Pokemon with the potential to be anything. Pikachu has been virtually unchangeable (to the point that his final evolution is practically ignored) I think largely due to his mascot status, while Eevee has been able to embrace change over the years with new evolutions. I think it's fitting that Eevee is getting secondary mascot status. In their own ways Pikachu and Eevee have been constants in the series more so than any other Pokemon, save for Magikarp. I agree with @exopiscea that any possible third version should feature everyone's favorite Karp.

Re: The Pokémon Let's Go Series Could Progress To Johto If Players Enjoy Lets Go Pikachu And Eevee

DonSerrot

@Onion It's more or less a remake of Pokemon Yellow with some Pokemon GO mechanics worked in. Pokemon GO was a big success, and in many ways it's still going strong. Some people try to downplay it, but there is still a very active community playing Pokemon GO.

Let's GO is attempting to combine Pokemon GO with a regular Pokemon RPG, and Gen 1 is the most logical place to test that from. The hope is that people who have Pokemon GO as their first game in the series, or who played Pokemon GO after not touching a Pokemon RPG in years, will give Let's GO a try and come back for the big Gen 8 game next year. The Pokemon GO connectivity is mainly just another way for them to try and bring in that player base. You can transfer Pokemon from GO to Let's GO in exchange for some items and the ability to catch a special brand new Pokemon. It's cross promotion, and it's honestly exactly the kind of thing I was thinking Nintendo would do when they said they wanted to use the mobile games to help bring people to the bigger experiences on Nintendo's dedicated hardware.

Let's GO being for little kids is a bit misleading. They've made some parts of the early game a little easier, but have added a bit more challenge to the end game too. Gyms require you to have caught a Pokemon that's effective against the gym leader in order to take them on, but you don't actually need the Pokemon in your party to do so. Late game there are 151 master trainers that have lvl 100 of a specific Pokemon and if you can beat them you take their title. To truly complete the game you have to beat fully powered versions of every Pokemon in the game. They may have lowered the barrier of entry, but they also greatly raised the skill ceiling for the end game content.

As someone who sits squarely in the middle of enjoying both the core RPGs and Pokemon GO I'm interested in seeing how Let's GO does. I think a lot of the problem we are seeing with the reception right now has more to do with the expectations people had compared with what we are getting. People expected Gen 8, and instead got GO flavored Gen 1. Gen 8 is still coming, but people are sour that it's not coming THIS year. So they blame Let's GO for standing in the way of what they truly want, and find every reason they can to dislike Let's GO. I know I'm among those who don't care for forced motion controls. It's disappointing that there isn't an option to ignore them like you can in Mario Odyssey. Let me just push a button if I don't want motion, but add a bonus for using motion. That would respect the decisions of those who don't like motion while adding an incentive to give it a try even just once. That said, it's not a deal breaker for me. Just an annoyance. Something for me to mention in the survey they'll probably send me after I play the game.

Let's GO is trying to reach a broader audience. There's always a certain amount of risk that comes with that. Like I said before, I'm not a big fan of some of the changes they are making, but I can see enough in there to enjoy that I personally find it worth giving a chance. Regardless, I still have the big Gen 8 game to look forward to next year that promises to be more like a traditional Pokemon RPG. I say giving something a little different a try in the mean time doesn't hurt anything.

Re: The Pokémon Let's Go Series Could Progress To Johto If Players Enjoy Lets Go Pikachu And Eevee

DonSerrot

@Octane Noooooooooooo. Animations should be one of the last things on the list before manufacturing. It'd be better to ship with the placeholder animations copied from the old games than to put so much time into animations that the game releases with bugs. And we've already seen evidence of exactly that with the new trailer having changes to the Mewtwo scene compared to everything that was seen before. We also saw the same thing with Mario Odyssey where there were big changes made to the opening scene shortly before the game released.

Re: The Pokémon Let's Go Series Could Progress To Johto If Players Enjoy Lets Go Pikachu And Eevee

DonSerrot

From the moment they said this was on the side of doing a whole new game I thought this would be a great way to handle revisiting generations going forward.

@Octane Because early alpha/beta gameplay footage is going to have all the animations in place and be a good representation of the final product. Animations and general polish are the last things worked on with most games. First you have to make sure the actual gameplay works and then spend the tail end of development making it look fancy. How about judging it based on footage from when it releases, not from when it was still early in development.

Re: Video: Adventure Awaits In This New Trailer For Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu And Eevee

DonSerrot

I can understand people who aren't hyped for this. If my situation was different I'd probably feel the same. I have a nephew who recently started reading who loves Pokemon and this is going to be his first Pokemon game. I'm excited to play along side him, trade with him, and most importantly CRUSH WHATEVER TEAM HE HAS INTO THE DUST. He's all cocky about his Pokemon cards with his friends. I never really got into the cards, so this is finally my chance to put him in his place. But really though, this'll be his first Pokemon adventure. I'm mainly excited to see what his progress looks like on that adventure. This game is mainly for him. Pokemon 2019 will be all me.

Re: Photorealistic Graphics Didn't Match Welcoming Nature Of Pokémon Let's Go Pikachu And Eevee

DonSerrot

I'm personally really happy with how Let's Go looks for what it is. The art style is reminiscent of the old Gen 1 games while still being more modern. That really feels like what this game is trying to do in general, bring back the feelings of the first games for returning players as well as for a new generation. If this was the art style for next year's Pokemon game then I'd be a little concerned, but I really feel like this style was done specifically for Let's Go. Gen 8 should either have it's own new style or build off of the Gen 7 style. If my hunch is correct we'll probably be seeing a Let's Go Gen 2 at some point in the future too. Let's Go feels too much like a redo of how they handle remakes for them to not continue with it if it does well enough. They'll probably want to have plenty of games to fill the Switch's longer planned life with, and with a nostalgia evoking art style already made I don't imagine it'd take too much extra work to make Gen 2 happen.

Re: Blizzard Intends To Add Cross-Console Play To Diablo III

DonSerrot

@Shade_Koopa There's nothing stopping PC. That's entirely on Blizzard to implement or not. Only consoles have the issue of a platform holder standing in the way. Xbox and Switch are pretty safe calls. Sony will probably try to resist it, but I think Fortnite took most of the fight out of them. Now that they've given in once gamers won't give them peace until they yield for any game that could potentially get cross play.

Re: Stardew Valley Dev Shares Thankful Message To Switch Fans, Is Excited About The Game's Future

DonSerrot

I had been a big fan of Harvest Mom back in the day, especially Friends of Mineral Town on the GBA. For me that is where the series peaked, and everything after just felt like there was something missing. I still can put it to words, but I can feel whatever it was that I couldn't find in post FOMT Harvest Moon and Story of Seasons games is alive and well in Started Valley. It makes sense too. In a Q&A ConcernedApe said that his favorite Harvest Moon game was Back to Nature, the PS1 title that FOMT was based on. When I first played Stardew Valley on PC the only thing that was missing was the portability if the GBA. As soon as the Switch version was available it was a no brainier and completely worth double dipping on. If you see this ConcernedApe, thank you for lovingly crafting the successor to FOMT I always wanted.

Re: Disgraced King Of Kong Star Billy Mitchell Is Aiming To Reclaim His Donkey Kong Score

DonSerrot

I say good for him for wanting to show he can do it legit. I still really don't like him (never have) and I feel the ban should still stand, but I can respect him wanting to show that he does have the skill to pull it off. It always felt to me like he cared more about being on top than doing things right. Now the only thing he has to prove is his skill, and with how things went before he HAS to do it the right way. Not for glory, for respect.

Re: Diablo III On Switch Will Include amiibo Support, According To Blizzard Developer

DonSerrot

I'm guessing they'll be going with the usual use any amiibo X times a day for a small amount of extra gold/items. Not saying that's a bad thing though. I prefer that over locking exclusive content behind them. I think games like Mario Odyssey and Bayonetta 2 found a great balance in having specific ones unlock extra cosmetics early while still having those things available as late game rewards for those without the amiibo.

Re: A Five Nights At Freddy's Console Port Deal Has Been Signed, Switch Games On The Way?

DonSerrot

I've never been able to play these games. I don't find getting scared entertaining. I have, however, enjoyed watching them be played by people like Markiplier and especially seeing the lore get torn apart by Game Theory. Gameplay wise the games don't really seem all that special, but I really like how well hidden under the surface the lore is and just how deep it goes. I wish Scott all the best with the console ports, but I'll leave these games for others to play.

Re: Review: Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch)

DonSerrot

To all the people complaining about the price, don't forget that this isn't anything new for the series. The past games have had initial versions and then full priced expanded versions in Japan, with Western audiences usually only getting the expanded version. I don't think that X/Gen were originally intended to have an expanded version as the initial release was more of an anniversary celebration title than anything.

I can understand the desire to not have to pay full price for a port, I don't like paying full price for any game and try to do what I can to bring the prices down. It's rare for me to double dip on anything, but having Monster Hunter at all on the Switch is something I wanted from the moment the console was announced. I know that I'll be playing this one for hundreds of hours even with bringing over my old Gen save because Monster Hunter has just always been my go to time killing game. Be it in the back seat for a road trip or lying in bed unable to fall asleep. To me that's worth the $52 I gave Best Buy for it.

I also don't want Capcom to have any excuse whatsoever to pass up the Switch just because they don't think there's an audience there. I desperately want to see them make a new MonHun with the Switch in mind and have them show us what they can really do with with the portable console and I don't want to be part of anything that could jeopardize that being a reality. If this game had been released on the 3DS only I'd have passed it up full stop. But because it's coming to the Switch that's all I needed to make this a buy.

Re: Masahiro Sakurai's Arcade Days Taught Him To Be Mindful Of All Types Of Players

DonSerrot

And as someone squarely in the casual side of Smash I really appreciate it. Smash for me is a fun game I can play with a group of friends an family members. Heck, I've even gotten to enjoy playing with random people at some conventions while sitting around between other things we wanted to do.

While I'm not into the competitive side of things at all I know there are people who it's practically everything for them, and I wouldn't want to take that away from them. One game can be a lot of different things for different people. Sakurai keeping this in mind is something I'm truly thankful for. It's impossible to please everyone, but making sure to take care of the fans at both ends of the spectrum of players seems like the best way to also take care of as many people in between as possible. Sakurai has all of my respect.

Re: Random: Fortnite Burger Sign Disappears From Map, Winds Up In Real-Life Desert

DonSerrot

There was a picture a while back on Reddit of a life size battle bus at the dev's HQ and off in the bushes you could see the burger head so it's for sure them. Either they've had this planned for a while now or they decided to have some fun with something they already had on hand. Either way it's really getting the community hyped up for whatever is about to happen with the end of the current season and the beginning of the next one.

Re: Fortnite Season Five Has Received An Official Start Date

DonSerrot

As @BenAV said, you have the ability to earn back more than you paid from the Battle Pass. There were a few things I wanted from this season, and in the week or so that I've been playing I was able get everything I wanted and earn back what I spent to do so thanks to the multiple weeks of challenges to work on. I don't expect to get all the way to tier 100 by the end of the season, but I should easily be able to snag some more stuff.

Re: Switch May Be Getting An Exclusive Monster Hunter Game As Well As Generations Ultimate

DonSerrot

As long as we get a new Monster Hunter on the Switch I'm perfectly fine with skipping World. Though I will say that I was kinda hoping the next game would be cross platform with Switch/PC/Xbox multiplayer for maximum player potential. I won't turn my nose up at a Switch exclusive though!

@MegaVel91 Monster Hunter World technically is MH5, but I almost feel like they decided to drop the number for it on the off chance that it didn't do well so they could have the option of following it up with a "real" MH5 later to save face if need be.
