Re: Massive Nintendo Switch System Update - Version 4.0.0 - Adds Video Capture and More

DonSerrot

@sillygostly They are saved to the SD card same as screenshots. I took a look at em on my computer and it looks like they are 720p 30fps mp4 files. They looked decent enough on my computer. The video I test tweeted looked like crap but they looked OK when I uploaded them to YouTube. Hopefully they'll expand the services you can upload to from the Switch itself in the future. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLRIozeAYv6kIfgvUysgP2eJyEpuNdhlb2

Re: Review: Stardew Valley (Switch eShop)

DonSerrot

I got this a while back for PC and it was like I was back in Mineral Town but better. The only thing missing was the portability of my old GBA favorite. A few months later the Switch version was announced and my hype meters hit critical. This is a title I'm more than happy to double dip on, it's worth it.

Earlier this year I visited my sister for a week and showed her the game on PC and pretty much lost my PC for the duration of my stay. I'm pretty sure my bro-in-law is bummed right now about losing access to BotW. XD

Re: Video: Fan-Made Showcase Illustrates The Potential Of Animal Crossing On Switch

DonSerrot

@flapjack-ashley New Leaf was the first game I tried to place a path pattern in and it was almost immediately destroyed. Same thing with my beautiful orchard that has every kind of fruit tree (excluding the ones on the beach) that someone decided to move right into the middle of. That right there was almost enough to make me stop playing. All that work ruined because RNG decided it hated me that day.

Re: Video: Fan-Made Showcase Illustrates The Potential Of Animal Crossing On Switch

DonSerrot

I remember watching his videos years ago and dropping away over time just because other people had more interesting content. It's a shame how far he's fallen after I stopped watching him.

That said, let's not talk about him or his video. I'm not even watching it, but I will talk about the topic it brings up. I think the Switch would be the perfect fit for Animal Crossing. I personally find I like the freedon of the portable AC games more than the console ones. I sank hour upon hour into the DS and 3DS games while only dabbling in the Wii one and I never did play the GC one.

I'd love to see them expand the public works system farther. Maybe let other animals borrow parts of that system for things other than building monuments. Want to add a cobblestone path that blends into the ground properly instead of just using designs? Talk to Leif and take him out for a walk to show him exactly where you want the path to go and get an estimate for that section of pathway. The designs would still be there for those that want to do paths that way of course. I wouldn't want to remove customization options, just add more. I think giving players the ability to fine tune structure placements would be great too. After you go to the spot when asked if that spot is OK give the option to manually nudge things around bit by bit instead of having to blindly reposition your body and hope things line up right this time. And please finally give us the option to construct housing plots for animals to move into where we want them to go. I don't care much about early on, but I always end up wanting to make a residential area and a park/forest area. And in case I get attached to someone already in town give me the option to pay a relocation fee to move someone to one of the other plots of land. I'd be OK with them picking a random plot just to keep things interesting. And make it so that if there's an open plot any new animals will move in there but if there isn't one they'll move to a random spot the way they do currently. Also make it so that the plots built by the player are permanent while the existing/random ones aren't. I'm sure we won't see anything for a while, but I'm really looking forward to seeing what sort of fun things they come up with when we inevitably do see AC on the Switch.

Re: Random: Switch Cosplayer Goes The Extra Mile at the Tokyo Game Show

DonSerrot

For something like this you most certainly don't go alone and you keep someone nearby to be your handler. Body may be free to move around, but looking through those tiny slits your vision would be way too compromised to navigate a crowded area and knowing cosplayers they wouldn't want to ruin the effect by removing part of the costume until they are done for the day.

Re: Switch Version Of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap Sold More Than All The Other Versions Combined

DonSerrot

They chose to support the console early with quality and were rewarded by having one of the most attractive early games for a console who's early adopters were hungry for more content after BotW. My money is tight so I ended up skipping it to focus on saving for some other games with an intention to pick it up when I have spare cash. I'm glad they are seeing success.

Re: L.A. Noire Is The Latest Game To Fall Foul Of The Dreaded "Switch Tax"

DonSerrot

I think at this point if there really is an added cost for these higher capacity cards Nintendo should stop putting that burden on the devs who are in turn putting that on the players. The Switch is wildly successful at this point and Nintendo isn't selling it at a loss and I'm pretty sure they aren't selling the cards at a loss either, they can afford to make a little less off those cards in order to avoid these problems. That said I'll probably try to pick this up from somewhere that offers discounts for pre-orders/launch weeks. I never played it originally and it seems like it's really interesting.

Re: The Nintendo Switch Update for NBA Playgrounds is Now Live

DonSerrot

Well... it's less frustrating now that there is a gauge for timing, but the tutorial is still really bad. It's like playing a game against a CPU set to expert with someone pausing the game randomly. What they need to do is split up the tutorial into separate sections that focus on each mechanic. Give a short explanation and then a practice portion with no enemy team or time limits so you can keep at each mechanic it until you get good at them. If not that then at least put some difficulty options in for exhibition mode because as it is right now the computer is too good for a beginning player to go up against making it mostly frustrating and not really all that fun.

Re: Music: Check Out Sonic Forces' Opening Theme, Featuring Hoobastank's Douglas Robb

DonSerrot

@Kid_Sickarus I think the problem is Sonic was made to be 90's cool but never went past that. If I look at Sonic Forces the way 90's me would have it'd be the most amazing thing ever but for me now it falls flat. Mario was (unintentionally probably let's be honest) given a timelessness that has worked well in his favor over all these years and should carry him well into the future.

Re: Monster Hunter: World Confirmed for Rival Platforms, is Skipping Nintendo Switch

DonSerrot

I'm really hoping this ends up being a spin off and traditional main series games stick with the Switch going forward. I think it's good that they are giving the HD console people what they've been asking for, but I didn't really like what I saw so I'll probably give it a pass unless there's something big that changes my mind. At least it's going to eventually come to PC so I can go with that when it's on sale or something if I do decide to pick it up.

Re: Editorial: Monster Hunter and Nintendo Switch Are a Match Made in Heaven

DonSerrot

@Ralizah Mechanically it was a really nice upgrade, but I agree that everything else fell flat for me. They did a great job with the story in 4U and I loved the way it took me from town to town. Generations just threw all the towns at you at once and picking up all the new quests was a nightmare. I think it would have been better to simply have us go to each town one at a time in the order they appeared in the series. That said I will be picking this up for sure. I said in the past that I'd be passing on the second version unless the Switch version rumors were true and here we are!

Re: Nintendo Gains Over $2 Billion in Market Value Following Monster Hunter XX Announcement

DonSerrot

If Capcom sold MH5 on the PS4 and the Switch it wouldn't sell well on the PS4 in the slightest. In Japan people tend towards portable games because you are on the go a lot usually with public transportation of some kind and from what I've heard it's very common to see people playing MH with random strangers on the train. If there's a portable option the Japanese will flock to it and that's the main market for the series while the boost it's seen in the West is a bit more recent. Nintendo has also done A LOT to help promote the series in the West and helped it become as popular here as it is now. There is literally nothing that Sony has to compel Capcom to their hardware while Nintendo has reasons for days to show how the Switch is the right fit for the series going forward.

Re: Capcom Is Bringing Monster Hunter XX to the Switch

DonSerrot

I'm fairly certain that localization was in the works shortly after the game launched in Japan for the 3DS, and actually there should be less to translate since we already have X/Gen in the US. If they don't do a global launch (and the 3DS version at the same time for those that want it) I'll be sorely disappointed. Me personally, a Switch version was exactly what I was hoping for.

Re: Fresh Data Shows That Four Out Of Five Pokémon GO Players Have Given Up Hunting

DonSerrot

The problem is a general lack of content. Catching the same Pokemon over and over is only interesting for so long. Add to that the fact that they had to kill off features to ease up on server strain causing people to make their own tools to replace those features making the server strain worse than it was before. They had to spend too much time putting out fires to get any new content ready in a reasonable time frame, and once they did it was pretty lackluster.

I still open the app from time to time to see what's near my house, but the game was pretty much over for me when they started imposing a speed limit when they already had the "I'm a passenger" button.

Re: Ubisoft Wants Your Input On Future Nintendo Switch Software Support

DonSerrot

Assassin's Creed III was one of the first games I got for the Wii U and I really enjoyed it. If they could pull it off I think an Assassin's Creed Trilogy bundle remastered for the Switch would be pretty cool so I could see the story from before that game. No more delayed ports is another big thing. I was interested in Watchdogs but the gap between the Wii U and every other platform kinda soured things and by the time it got to the Wii U I had lost interest.

Re: Bloodstained: Ritual Of The Night Coming To Switch, Wii U Version Deader Than Drac Himself

DonSerrot

It's sad to see the Wii U go out like this, but it's understandable. The Wii U has no future. It's last hurrah was Zelda and now it's time to put it out to pasture. The one good thing to come out of this however is that the Switch should end up with no lack of software in the coming months and that should help keep pushing the hardware in all the ways that the Wii U didn't get for it's launch.

Re: Super Mario Run Is Finally Coming To Android Next Week

DonSerrot

I'll do the free portion, but I'd rather use that $10 for something on the Switch instead so I think I'll pass on the payed portion unless I get a lot of Google Rewards surveys in the not too distant future.

@Dakt It released on iOS months ago with the promise of "soon" for Android.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Switch Has Started Well - Now the Real Challenge Begins

DonSerrot

I fully expected them to have a supply shortage because it's Nintendo. I'll be honest here, some of it is probably intentional to a certain extent due to borrowing from Apple's playbook. Keep supply a little lower so demand seems higher and create buzz around this awesome yet unobtainable tech that gives you prestige if you own it. I imagine it'll stay that way for a few months too. That said, this device is certainly deserving of the hype. Nintendo did good this time around, and while it's not perfect it is what I was hoping it'd be. By the time Summer rolls around they should be done with the whole supply shortage thing and we'll have some great games available just in time for kids getting out of school that should push sales even more.

Re: Guide: How To Access the Nintendo Switch eShop For Multiple Regions

DonSerrot

I'd like to add another little useful trick. Not sure what emails support this but I do know Gmail does. You can add "+something" to your email to make it act like a different email address but what you receive will still show up at your normal email. For example I did [email protected] to set up a Japanese My Nintendo account and later I can do [email protected] for a European account without actually having to set up new email addresses.

Re: VOEZ Is The First Nintendo Switch Game You Can Only Play In Portable Mode

DonSerrot

After seeing this mentioned as available on iOS/Android I figured I'd see what this game is about. It's a free to play rhythm game where you tap squares when they reach a line near the bottom of the screen. It has a selection of limited time free songs and you have to pay to unlock songs permanently. They also gave me the song from the video for free. It's hardly the most exciting game in the world.

With all the discussion going on in here over portable only mode I figured I'd chime in and say I don't see this as a bad thing. If Nintendo didn't want people using the touch screen they wouldn't have included one in the first place. They could have cut the cost by not including touch but they put it in anyway leading me to believe that this is something they fully expected to happen. On the flip side I do see a problem with the thought of docked only games. Docked mode offers nothing that portable mode lacks so a docked only game would only be limiting itself for the sake of limiting itself and nothing more and that's bad. This game is only limiting itself to portable mode because of the one unique control option portable mode has is what this game was built around in the first place.

Also, while I'm not a fan of most mobile games I'm not opposed to them being on the Switch and in fact I welcome them because that means more games will be available to Switch owners.
