Following the recent Nintendo Labo updates for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch, along with the announcement, even more, was on the way, Nintendo has now added free Breath of the Wild content to the game.
Link will now be able to tear around the track on the Master Cycle Zero while wearing the Champion’s Tunic. Take a look at the trailer above, and tell us below if you'll be returning to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Well that’s nice to have.
No direct this month, then?
Never left MK8D in the first place. Just more goodness to keep on karting with.
Meh...
Sweet
Yay....!
Would be better if added with ARMS (Springman, Ribbon Girl, Ninjara, Twintelle, etc) & more Animal Crossing characters (Tom Nook, Timmy + Tommy, Reese, Cyrus, Copper, Booker, etc)
well, at least it's free.
i hope they do this for Smash Bros. Ultimate, i like how Nintendo does these free updates for their games. (though, i kinda doubt that. )
Is he still using the SS link voice...?
Haven't gotten the game updated yet but can't wait to play it. Maybe if we get lucky we could see a new dlc pack in the future? I'd love to see tracks based on Arms since it's the same Dev team that made both of these games.
Nice I guess, but new tracks would be great. I'd gladly pay whatever they'd charge.
The next Mario Kart just needs to be Nintendo Kart already. Also, an adventure mode like DKR, please.
It wasn't long after Mario Kart 8's Mercedes DLC announcement that we learned about the brand-new cups being added to the game. Hopefully we'll see a repeat of that here! With Nintendo releasing Hot Wheels toys next year themed to Mario Kart 8 specifically, despite Tour launching that year, I hope that means Nintendo will continue to show support for this game and just use it as a growing platform. It would seem far-fetched to me if Nintendo brought someone in to model this one character and bike for MK8 Deluxe and nothing else this far into the release of the game.
Knew they were going to add more stuff. They still have to sell that subscription fee somehow. But I think Captain Falcon should be in the game. The poor guy isn’t getting a new game of his own, and the least they could do is include him in a different racing game. They already have a Mute City track, so it’s only logical.
Man, I was hoping for new tracks - which i'd gladly pay for - but hey, I'll take free whatever.
@Mew was that even foreseeable in general?
I like this a lot.... keep it coming!
I need to get this game, haven't played it since the Wii U.
Great news! Hopefully this bodes well for things to come. While I don't want MK8DX to replace a MK9, I'm always excited for new content.
@Anti-Matter An ARMS character in Mario Kart would be a (warp) pipe dream come true
Interesting. Wasn't expecting any actual content given the context of the message several days back, but it happened. Nothing too exciting, but free is free.
Nintendo should just make a huge expansion for this game instead of Mario Kart 9. It’s an excellent game, and I’d love more of it. Whatever they want to add, I’ll be glad they added it.
Not buying it again Nintendo! I already own it on the Wii U. I wish they’d do some sort of deal with MK 8 for the Switch where if you already owned it on the Wii U you can upgrade for 20 bucks to a switch download code.
Cool. But I could deal with some new tracks. Waluigi’s Pinball, Dino Dino Island, Maple Treeway, Coconut Mall and 4 brand new tracks would be nice.
Returning? Never left! This should've been from day one!! It would've made a great announcement together with the Inklings. But I guess at the time the Master Cycle Zero wasn't announced yet, right? Anyways, should've been announced together with the Champion's Ballad then xD Better late than never!
So is the new outfit and bike going to be on a character slot? Or similar to how you can switch between Metal and Gold Mario?
Sweet!
Good stuff. I've been holding off on Deluxe, since there's so many other Switch games, but this may push be to upgrade. A BotW inspired track would be icing on the cake.
Well, I never left. My family and I play almost every night.
With that said, this is a nice little pieces of DLC. Hope more is on the way
What I Need is a New Donk City cup!!
Nice surprise. Keep it coming Nintendo.
I quit playing Splatoon 2's DLC for the night (I was late getting around to finishing it) and saw MK8D updating. Needless to say, I'm loving this. MK8D is still one of the few games I can play on the Switch with friends of mine that have moved away (until Ultimate of course), so I'm super happy that the previous info about more updates was actually indicating more than just a mere "stability" update.
@Not_Soos literally 1 year later after the game, we got the first DLC for MK8.... It's been a little over a year with Mk8D but I also see the trend, which has me excited!
@Deadlyblack similar to the female and male villager where you pick it and have to choose after the different variations. The bike is its own slot, with the wheels and propeller
I'm with Joeynator3000 on this one. Meh...
Indifferent
I mean if I didn't like MK8DX, this would not be enough to convince me otherwise. But as a small freebie in a game I already consider almost perfect? Very nice!
We've come full circle. BotW got the Master Cycle Zero because of Link's bike in MK8. Now the BotW version is being added to the game that inspired it in the first place.
Is bowsers car from 3d world in this game? I have mk8wiiu and the deluxe and I honestly dont know lol
I've played this game non-stop since it came out last May, nice to get a cool, freebie like this. Since it's now clear Nintendo will be updating this game, I wonder if maybe we get some Splatoon 2 Octo expansion inspired rides or tracks.
@DavidMac sell your WiiU to feed your Switch!
Wouldn’t it be cool if they did what they’re doing with Smash and gave us purchasable DLC for “Every track ever!” to play on MK8?MK7 vesion of rainbow road. Wii version of rainbow road. All of them.
@DavidMac Unfortunately, I don't think that is possible.
There should be pretty much no way to do this for the physical Wii U owners, unless you can register the game by just putting in the disk. That would also mean that a single disk can give the Switch version for any amount of people though.
Now think about the outrage if this is for digital owners only. Anyone having bought the physical version would be at a huge disadvantage this way.
As a bonus, there would also be an outrage by people who already bought both console versions now hearing that they didn't have to pay that much...
And here I was playing MK8D yesterday
@RadioHedgeFund Not a chance, my Wii U has my saved for so many games, including Breath of the Wild.
That said Nintendo might get some rage from people who owned physical copies of MK8 but it’s not like buying a physical copy you could ever expect it to work on new hardware. With digital if I buy a game on my iPhone it’s available on my iPad or my next iPhone. Plus I was able to upgrade my digital Wii virtual console games for like 2 bucks.
Still, if they do plan on doing another big DLC I hope they discount the original game digitally.
Can I shield block blue shells?
Octoling skins over Inkling next, please! Honestly, I love that the game is getting extra content, and the wounds of buying the Wii U version are starting to heal with each update that adds more content, but I hope it will eventually get four more cups and battle arenas as paid DLC!
I can't wait to see what the next set of tracks are. I hope there's a metroid one!
Oh all we really need is Mushroom City, Maybe a New Donk track, Petey Piranha, Paratroopa, (add him dry bones, and koopatroopa in the same slot...you know what i mean.) OOH AND MAYBE THE SQUID SISTERS AND OFF THE HOOK!!! Yea that's a great idea...mabey some new catchy karts...and can it NOT be paid DLC? that would really suck.
Nice,.. but whole trailer for just 1 vehicle...
Some crumbs for us all
@CordovaBish What you just said will literally never happen, especially if you want it free.
I wouldn't mind some new tracks, but at this point I sort of agree with @justin233 here. I think they need to make a MK9, with more Nintendo characters and maps inspired by their other series. It would be a nice soft-reboot and I can't imagine many people would hate the idea of Splatoon, Starfox, Metroid, or Kirby themed tracks in Mario Kart.
@Tasuki
It's definitely worth it. This version is much better with the very improved battle mode.
This was completely unexpected. They should just scrap Mario Kart and call it Nintendo Kart already. Even though, it probably would cause some confusion to the consumers and lose sales.
@PinkSpider A Metroid track would be amazing! You got my hopes up for something that will probably never happen. Lol
@Moonlessky No but it should be
I am very tempted to buy that game now.
Also I now realize how sad it is that BotW doesn't have any Master Cycle challenges. That's probably why it feels like a bit of a letdown as a reward, by the time you get it you don't really need it and it's pretty much mostly a toy you get bored of after an hour. Some Master Cycle trials would be nice.
Unless you can use it for horse riding challenges and I never realized.
@Deadlyblack The character is just a skin for the Skyward Sword Link already in the game while the bike is a completely new vehicle with different stats and everything. It even comes with a set of new wheels and a new glider. All with different stats.
@SmaggTheSmug You should buy it
@ChompyMage Just call the next installment "Super Kart Bros" in vein of Smash.
@ChompyMage Haven't had the chance to check yet. Does it share stats with anything good?
@ChompyMage Yeah, but... I'm not into racing games myself. I already have a racing game for my multiplayer needs (Fast RMX) and a few games I got for multi that I don't get to play very often (ARMS, Snipperclips, Pokken).
I'm not that keen on adding more to that just yet.
I don't see this game as a Wii U port I see this as an enhanced game of the year edition. Forget the new battle tracks and included DLC, the extra item box and additional boost changes how I play the game and the HD rumble enhances the experience too, plus proper portability.
I have a digital copy of MK8 on Wii U but have no regrets with buying MK8 Deluxe at full price on the Switch. Already got my money's worth and more out of it.
People need to be realistc, this "port" has already outsold the Wii U version at over 9 million copys worldwide and is constantly in the top ten of the UK charts (and others I am sure) to this day, so why would Nintendo offer a deal? Supply and demand.
All the Wii U owners who won't rebuy, I respect your choice but I imagine you already got your money's worth out of MK8 on Wii U so Nintendo owes you nothing. The only person you are hurting by taking this stance is yourself but that is your own choice.
Nice for a freebie. A lot of other companies would slap this on their online stores with a price tag of up to £5. I shall be racing around Hyrule with this later! Fingers crossed there's more courses on the way at a later date, even with a premium.
@ChompyMage They don't need to ditch the Mario Kart name, since Mario characters would still hold the majority of slots anyways. They'd just have to soft-reboot the name a little, like they did with Super Mario Party and drop the number.
This would help with new people, because people are naturally reluctant to jump into a series that is 8+ games in, even if it isn't a story-centric series.
@SmaggTheSmug Perfect
@Regpuppy I haven't checked it with every Kart yet but i do know that it's pretty different from all the vehicles around it. Also if you're wondering, it handles a lot differently than the normal Master Cycle.
When is it due to release? Anyway, I hope it comes to the Wii U too. After all, BOTW is a Wii U game. I don't play that version anymore, but I'd download the update anyway.
@Moroboshi876 Already out
@Regpuppy I like that idea
A nice little addition ,and one that makes sense
rip dlc tracks i guess? which is sad, but also weird, as nintendo has recently been promoting mario kart 8 again.
Like others have mentioned here, this feels like that time in summer 2014 when we got the free Mercedes content followed soon after by the reveal of the 2 DLC packs.
Where's MarioKart 9? I am already bored with these Wii U games.
@Heavyarms55 excellent summary. I’d imagine this won’t be all. Strange just to add this.
@Moroboshi876 Considering the Wii U didn't get the new battle stages, this won't come either.
returning? I haven't stopped playing it since release day on the Wii U. Am busy trying to get three stars on all cups on the switch version.
I prefer the original Link look. I'd rather have some new tracks or all new characters rather than these pointless tiny updates
I won't be returning as I never left! Great to see Nintendo are still putting new content into older games to keep people coming back though. Hopefully there's even more to come
@Euler
Never thought of it from that perspective but it makes sense to highlight the online service by updating all the Switch multiplayer games to bring them to the forefront again.
@mailman
There's always a first for everything, but no Nintendo console has ever had 2 Mario Karts. I think you'll have to wait till Switch 2 to get Mario Kart 9.
Why 'returning' NL ?.... Did you already left MK8D ?... That's sad !
Nice update, I hope we'll have a bigger one soon, with new tracks and a lot of characters... Like the whole SSBU roster included in MK lol... That would be awesome
Cool.
Not a Zelda fan, but this is a great start. Not like I ever stopped playing, but Nintendo is really going all the way in making this the definitive Mario Kart game.
It's nice but why???... New game please! Switch not had a mk game yet... And next one make it Nintendo Kart
Sweet ride! I’m sure there will not be a MK9 before the MK mobile game...maybe Summer 2020?
@cleveland124 Most consoles didn't flat out port the previous Mario Kart either though. This is something worth noting.
That being said, if we do get a MK9 on the Switch, it'd be later in the Switch lifecycle. They might just support MK8DX with dlc as well. But if they don't, there's going to be a content gap for the series a few years into the consoles lifecycle.
@ChompyMage Definitely, it drifts to the outside, which is a relief. Didn't like that the master cycle drifted inward to begin with; messed up my cornering.
Also, figured it out on my own.
Master cycle = Koopa Clown/Tanooki Kart
Ancient Tires = Monster/Hot Monster
Paraglider = Wario Wing/Plane Glider
....I never left the track! But my time on the track has definitely dwindled. This won't change anything for me but its really cool that Nintendo is still adding content to this game.
@RadioHedgeFund I have to many great games on my Wii u that wont come out on switch to sell it
@Moroboshi876 I doubt it. Botw was the last support Nintendo gave to the Wii u, and why would they give players another reason to not upgrade from Wii u to deluxe
Free dlc is certainly nothing to be snuffed at especially if this was other companies as they'd would charge you.
New tracks in the future ?
@Bread-Not-Toast dont act like Nintendo doesn;t try to charge its customers for DLC. I remember when DLC first came out on other systems Nintendo fans made fun of those games. Nintendo only releases complete games. Now games like Arms, Splatoon come out and were supposed to be ahppy to wait. Sure those games had free DLC. But Zelda had paid DLC, mari kart 8 had paid dlc. Nintendo is just about the bottom line as much as any other company. They are just better at making games which results in some people giving them a pass.
@Bread-Not-Toast Other companies give free DLC for their games every once in a while.
@SmaggTheSmug @Regpuppy @Chompymage
I think it’s a good idea to freshen up the series with characters and tracks from other Nintendo games. They’re already doing it anyway with Link and others. The number 9 is unlucky in Japan so it would be go good opportunity to change the name to Super Kart Bros. too!
Well they only named it Deluxe, not Definitive, right? All DLC for MK8 welkome anytime!
@Regpuppy I completely agree with you there. And thanks for the stat comparison there.
This is so cool. And perhaps motivation for me to FINALLY play through the Champions’ Ballad (I have been basically waiting for the perfect time to do it / putting it off because I don’t want BotW to ever be truly over for me—never played anything like it and don’t know if I ever will again).
@DavidMac I’d normally agree, but that would just screw over the people that already double-dipped. It would have been a good move back when the game was launched, to reward customer loyalty while at the same time giving Wii U owners a good incentive to buy a Switch. But that ship has set sail.
Why would I play MK8D when I can drive around with the Master Cycle Zero freely in BotW?
Ffs, they're not going to make new tracks for MK8. They're just keeping the brand alive with minor updates until MK9.
@Anti-Matter plus kirby
@DonSerrot yeah, I'm pretty sure the master cycle was added to Botw with MK in mind
I'm still waiting for Mario kart 7 dlc, considering it sold over 17 million copies Nintendo missed a huge opportunity. Instead they released it for Wii U which sold considerably less than the 3ds version! I would have gladly paid £20 for 8 more tracks and I bet I'm not alone.
MK8D is the only kart racer anyone needs.
Man Breath of the Wild contents are being milk everywhere nowadays with these Switch games: first Skyrim, then Minecraft, then Monster Hunter Generation Ultimate, then Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and now Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Hopefully next they can just port Injustice 2, Soul Calibur 6, and Tekken 7 to Switch, and just throw Champion Link and some Breath of the Wild contents in there and call it a day. That I would love. Link versus any of the TMNT in Injustice 2 would be awesome to see.
Mario Kart should go open world.
Zelda and Mario Kart are my favorite Nintendo games, so I'm happy. BotW and MK8 were my first Switch games and I play them a lot.
