Re: Poll: Do You Play Your Switch More In Docked Or Handheld Mode?

DonSerrot

I used to play mostly docked, but recently I've gone closer to 50/50 I think. In the past there have been times where it's been mostly undocked. That's the real power of the Switch, it plays in the mode I most need it to when I need it to. It's not all or nothing. I don't ever want to go back to all or nothing.

Re: Yes, Monster Hunter Rise Really Is Running On Standard Switch Hardware

DonSerrot

@YANDMAN Just because they are telling devs to be ready for it doesn't mean it's coming in a matter of months. It takes time to make games. This article even says how MH Rise has been in the works for 4 years. That's a year before the Switch launched in 2017. This feels more like Nintendo wanting to make sure there are a bunch of games ready for when they do bring out a 4k ready Switch in a couple years. That way when they do release it they can point out how a bunch of games you already own are getting upgraded.

Re: Yes, Monster Hunter Rise Really Is Running On Standard Switch Hardware

DonSerrot

@Grumblevolcano The thing with Nintendo's hardware updates is they usually mark the end of a console's lifecycle, not the middle. The New 3DS (2015) had 2 years before the Switch (2017) ended it. Nintendo tried to hold out for another year or so but it was clear that it was done the moment the Switch entered the picture. If you look at the GBA (2001) it was two years until they released the GBA SP (2003) and then one more year until the DS (2004) came and replaced that. The DS Lite (2006) and the DSi (2008) also didn't get that much time before the 3DS (2011) came around. All of this to say that normally Nintendo goes for 2-3 years between new hardware versions, and those hardware versions tend to mark the tail end of things. Nintendo said they want the Switch to have a longer lifecycle so it'd make sense to spread out the revisions. We literally just got the Switch Lite so just going by their history it's make sense to expect 2-3 years before the next revision. That'd give another 2-3 years of life before giving us a whole new console. 8-9 years total from Switch launch. That'd fit the longer lifecycle Nintendo wants.

Re: Yes, Monster Hunter Rise Really Is Running On Standard Switch Hardware

DonSerrot

@EVIL-C There is no way any kind of upgraded Switch will be able to play the same games as the PS5 and the XBox whatever the random name generator said this time. There is zero reason for Nintendo to chase after third parties like that when the original Switch is still selling like crazy with it without them. The whole point of a Pro model is to give slowing sales a boost. The sales are still crazy strong with no sign of stopping any time soon. It's in their best interest to bide their time for now. Keep working on what they have and make sure it's a big upgrade when they do drop it on us.

Re: Yes, Monster Hunter Rise Really Is Running On Standard Switch Hardware

DonSerrot

@sanderev I wasn't talking normal though. Like I said, Nintendo wants the Switch to have a longer than normal life cycle. They said so after the Switch took off like a rocket. Typically Nintendo's upgraded hardware carries the last 2-3 years of a life cycle. The 3DS came out in 2011 with the New 3DS coming in 2015. The 3DS pretty much died in 2017 when the Switch launched and it took Nintendo another year or so to realize it. So if Nintendo wants to match the 3DS they could totally go with next year. I still think the year after is better.

There's also the whole issue of a global pandemic slowing down development and manufacturing, not to mention a lot of people being unable to work and not having as much spare cash as normal. All of that won't get magically fixed over night. I imagine most if not all of 2021 will be spent recovering from this year. I imagine hardware development is also nearly impossible while working from home, so they are probably half a year behind making next year feel even less likely if they were going with "normal". 2022 around the 5th anniversary of the OG Switch just feels right to me.

Re: Yes, Monster Hunter Rise Really Is Running On Standard Switch Hardware

DonSerrot

I still feel like it's too soon for a Switch Pro. The console has only been around for 3 years. I feel like they could hold off for a couple more years before an upgrade. Especially since they want to have the Switch have a longer lifespan. Giving us an upgrade 5 years into the console's life could add 3-4 more years I think. Maybe even longer because of how strong the core concept of the Switch is.

I'd say what we are seeing in the MH Rise trailer is 4 years of absolute polish. We all know that the Switch is capable of really great visuals thanks to Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild, it's just that not many other publishers have dug in to really show what the hardware is capable of. Now that we're seeing that it's surprising people.

Re: Switch Can Break The Traditional Hardware Cycle And Become Nintendo's iPhone, Says Analyst

DonSerrot

Nintendo continuing to upgrade the Switch for eons and continuing to innovate don't have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, they have a long history of doing both at the same time. Things like GameBoy Color games with extra features when played on a GBA kept games available to older hardware while giving a reason to get the newer devices. Both the DSi and New 3DS had exclusive games that could only work on those upgraded models. Monster Hunter 4U could play on both the OG and New 3DS while taking advantage of the New 3DS's features like a better framerate and the control nub. The 3DS, Wii U, and Switch had amiibo to bring extra content. Even the Switch has had stuff like Let's Go Pikachu & Eevee where you could use a controller made specifically for those games and Labo to literally DIY yourself new controllers. Nintendo is probably the best suited company to continue innovating with the Switch. They just need to innovate a real fix for Joycon drift first. And when we do eventually get a New Switch make games like MH4U that work on both, but better for the New. Ease people into the transition so they feel like it's their idea to upgrade instead of feeling forced into it with a New Switch exclusive right away.

Re: Every Smash Bros. Ultimate Stage Has To Be Reworked For Minecraft Steve's Inclusion

DonSerrot

This isn't a character I was asking for but I am excited nonetheless. I know there were a lot of people asking for this so I'm glad that they get to have that same joy I had when Banjo & Kazooie were added. I've been enjoying Minecraft content again over this past year after a long break from it, so it's great to see even more love for this game. Now obviously the next step will be watching the members of the Hermitcraft server play some Smash Bros once Steve is released.

Re: Did You Miss Out On The Super Mario Anniversary Pin Set? You're Not Alone

DonSerrot

I had been checking on and off for a couple hours just in case they went up early and was fortunate enough to be one of the people in a half hour early. I think I was catching the beginnings of the site strain while making my order though. I had a pending charge for it, but when the site came back there wasn't a pending order, and I never got the email confirmation. It did let me use my code again and I successfully made a new order and got confirmation for that one. As long as I get one set I'll be happy. If by some miracle I get a second I'll have some easy Christmas presents.

Re: Talking Point: Could Monster Hunter Rise Hint At New Switch Hardware On The Horizon?

DonSerrot

People have been predicting a Switch Pro since shortly after the original was released. I think it'll happen eventually, but I don't think we are quite there yet. If anything it'll be minor upgrades like the current compared to the original. What I'm expecting first is a dock upgrade. There was that whole patent a while back for a "supplemental computing device" that they still have to work with. I can see them doing a new package with the current Switch and an upgraded dock that provides extra resources to help games run and look even better, and also selling the upgraded dock on it's own for existing Switch owners. Once that's done I can see them bringing out a stronger Switch tablet after a year or two.

Re: Guide: Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories For August And September 2020

DonSerrot

I've been looking forward to Crystal Chronicles remastered for a long time now. I had a copy on the Gamecube back in the day, and even all the GBA cables for it too, but nobody really seemed interested in playing it with me for long. I'm looking forward to finally being able to play through it. The no local multiplayer thing is disappointing, but doesn't mess me up at all since locally my personal multiplayer situation hasn't changed. That's really about it for this month.

Re: Paramount Locks In 2022 Release Date For Sonic The Hedgehog's Movie Sequel

DonSerrot

That feels overly ambitious. I suppose they could shave off a lot of time since they already have the design work done and can just reuse it from the first movie. That doesn't feel like enough time for the writing/filming/editing though. I'll not be surprised if it get's pushed back some. They certainly earned having a sequel, hopefully they make the most of it.

Re: The Remaster Of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Won't Support Local Multiplayer

DonSerrot

Aren't they doing a mobile phone version of this remaster too? I imagine they want to boost the download numbers for that, and are hoping that the free version being able to play the whole thing with someone who owns the full game will help keep complaints down.

My issue though is no local wireless play. That means no back seat road trip multiplayer sessions. That also means if you are visiting a friend who has less than ideal internet you are stuck with that less than ideal internet even if you are literally in the same room. Granted, these aren't typical situations for me, but they are things I think about.

Re: What Comes After Switch? Nintendo Discusses Plans For Future Game Consoles

DonSerrot

The Switch for sure has quite a bit of life ahead of it. It feels weird seeing questions about what's next when we aren't anywhere near slowing down. I think Nintendo has really found it's niche with hybrid consoles. No more splitting their devs attention between two pieces of hardware and at the same time still giving the players the best of both worlds. Stick with it Nintendo!

Personally, I want to see something come from that patent for increasing power with an external unit. I feel like they could release a dock upgrade in a year or two that enhances things for the TV side of things. Maybe follow that up with a new Switch tablet with that baked right in after another year or so. With gradual upgrades spaced out right I can see them easily pushing past their original planned lifecycle.

As for the whole software expectations thing, I'm really not seeing the lack others are. For the 3DS they could pop games out like nothing because they didn't need to be as big. I also honestly think they had more planned for the 3DS that got hard switched over to the Switch once the writing was on the wall for the 3DS. Not only would it take them more time to make quality Switch games, but it'd take even more time to port and upgrade them from the 3DS dev environment. I think Nintendo has also really learned their lesson about taking their time and making things right. If you rush you get the current Pokemon situation. The DLC feels like a small taste of what could have been if GameFreak had the freedom to take a little more time. The current world situation is also for sure slowing things down. I think they have a lot of games ready to go, but now they are spacing them out more to make sure they can fill the spaces originally meant for games that have had their development slowed down. Giving us game rations to make sure it lasts the upcoming game famine.

Re: Capcom Says "No" To Monster Hunter World On Nintendo Switch (Again)

DonSerrot

I never bothered with World. Just from the trailers something felt... off about it. I don't know. Either way I don't really feel a loss if they don't want to port it over. They put so much focus on GRAPHICS that they'd probably have to make far too many compromises to make it work. I'd much rather have something made for the Switch from the ground up. Though I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this ends up being a mobile phone game instead with how willing Capcom seems to have been to make Switch games.

Re: Billy Mitchell's Donkey Kong And Pac-Man Scores Are Reinstated By Guinness World Records

DonSerrot

I want to know how a "legit" board managed to load levels like an emulator. If you can actually demonstrate that to me I'll accept it. Until then I've seen too much evidence to support that he cheated and that at least that first million point tape should be disqualified. I honestly don't care if his other historic scores stay, just the one where he was proven to have cheated has to go. Don't just say you've reviewed evidence, show it to us!

I do believe that Billy has the skills to be on top, but I also believe that he took shortcuts to stay on top once he got there. In a way this whole situation reminds me of a line from the movie Cool Runnings. "A gold medal is a wonderful thing, but if you aren't enough without one then you'll never be enough with one." That's how I see Billy. His records are everything to him. He uses them to sell his hot sauce. Without them he loses everything that he sees himself as.

Re: Why Does The New Pokémon Snap Game On Nintendo Switch Look So Stunning?

DonSerrot

I'm fairly certain that the models in New Snap are the same as the ones in Sword & Shield. The things that are really making this stand out are the animations and the environments. I'm still very much of the mind that Sword & Shield were meant to be 3DS games, but had a hard change in plans when the Switch took off like a rocket while new 3DS releases were largely getting ignored by consumers. They tried to patch things up where they could, but had little to no time to do so with no wiggle room in the release schedule.

New Snap on the other hand looks like it's been made from the ground up for the Switch. The water in the screenshot used above looks a lot like the beach kingdom in Mario Odyssey in style. This being a picture taking focused game the animations are everything, so it makes sense that Bamco would put extra attention into those details. I imagine Sakurai has also been a great influence on them when it comes to quality and understanding their fanbase after working together on Smash Bros.

Now, I'm not saying GameFreak should get a pass for what they pulled. They really should have delayed, or at least hired a temp to fix the N64 trees in the wild area after the E3 response. They should also have YEARS of data of fan feedback to know that literally every 3D Pokemon game has had people checking DOUBLE KICK to see if they finally gave it a real animation.

At least now it seems like they are acting on some of that years worth of feedback. The Armour Isle looks good, and the time I've spent in it I feel like they've made much better use of the environment design. I also feel like there's been a bit more attention given to the animations, and there have been long requested features like having your Pokemon follow you making a return. I kinda feel a bit optimistic that if they can show some real progress with these DLC that they could actually give us something good next gen when they actually do make it for the Switch from the start. I think what would be wise is bringing in Bamco to assist with the next gen games. Let them take care of the detail work to make the games really shine.

Re: Random: So Much For Level Scaling In Pokémon's Isle Of Armor DLC

DonSerrot

I'm not surprised in the least, but I do wish they had at least bumped things up another notch for those of us who have already finished the game. It makes sense to me to have it keep pace with the main story for those jumping in part way, but my post game lvl 100 Sylveon is TRASHING literally everything on the island. It doesn't need to be soul crushing, but it'd be nice if things survived at least one Draining Kiss so I can catch them. Maybe have the inventor kid make a device that adds an extra 10-20 levels to wild area pokemon if you show him a lvl 100 on your team.

Re: Mega Man Legends Composer Wants To Crowdfund The Third Entry

DonSerrot

I remember the cancelation well. I've never played any of the Legends games and I'm still upset about it because I was really looking forward to picking it up when it was done. I remember that Capcom cited a lack of interest from fans, but I think the real problem was they wanted the fans to make the game for them and most people didn't want to get involved with that part of the project because they didn't want spoilers. Then Capcom plugged their ears and ignored the fans who flooded into the content creation part of it just to beg them not to cancel it. I felt bad as a potential fan, and I can only imagine how bad the existing fans of the series felt after that.

I remember at the time they even had a full demo for it ready to go with a little pre-story and an unlockable debug mode, but they canceled the project without even trying to put the demo out there. At the time I said they should have released the demo for like $2 and used that to gauge interest instead of their "make the fans do the work for us" thing. Even if the interest hadn't been there they'd have at least made something back from the work they already did, though I believe the fate of Legends 3 would have been completely different had they done so.

I really hope this succeeds. I'd love for this game to get a second chance.

Re: Could Gyroids Be Returning To Animal Crossing: New Horizons?

DonSerrot

I'm fairly certain that MOST of the features from previous games will be making a return in one way or another gradually over time. If we're lucky we'll get Brewster at the same time. And I have to say I'm enjoying the gradual rollout. In the past I've felt a bit overwhelmed at the start wanting to work on collecting EVERYTHING and feeling like I was losing time. Now I feel like I've better been able to focus at a more leisurely pace on projects that I imagine will be done or close to done once the next collection starts.

Re: Talking Point: Are You Suffering From Animal Crossing: New Horizons Fatigue?

DonSerrot

I've always felt like Animal Crossing is like a zen garden. You go there to relax and maybe make some small changes every once in a while. Once my island got to where I was content with it I shifted out of the 10 hour a day play sessions into a more relaxed hour or so a day visit routine. I have spent a little more time this week reworking some of the layout, but it's mostly just checking in on my animal friends, seeing what visitors my island has, checking turnip prices, and getting my daily allotment of fossils to check at the museum.

Re: Bank Of Nook Reduces The Interest Rate In Animal Crossing: New Horizons

DonSerrot

@sanderev I don't care much for time traveling myself, but I think the devs planned for time travelers for the most part with how they're doing these event content updates. The time travelers can and will do whatever they want, but they've basically been stuck with only the first month's worth of content to travel through. I think the one thing the devs didn't plan for is people selling their ill gotten digital goods on ebay, prompting this interest rate change. I say if time travelers want to cheapen their experience it's their $60 to do with as they will. It's not my place to tell them how to play their game. It does kinda bug me that my interest rates are getting effected by their shenanigans, but I've never really gotten much from interest in the past so it doesn't bug me too much. It's more of a minor annoyance than anything.

Re: Massive Animal Crossing: New Horizons Datamine Reveals Exciting Potential Features

DonSerrot

All the stuff on this list are really exciting things. If even a fraction of them show up in future updates that's make an already fun game even better. I was really hoping for bushes to return especially, so seeing them mentioned in the code like this has me excited. I've even been keeping them in mind while thinking about what I want to do with my island.

To the people dumping on this, we aren't talking about a game where they released a base bones game with half the content and then changed extra after the fact to add only SOME of that content back. They released what could be considered a finished game and announced ahead of time that extra stuff and seasonal events would be updated in for FREE over time. We knew they were doing this going in. It's also very obviously (at least to me) part of their strategy to keep time travelers from playing for two weeks and being done.

Re: Poll: Animal Crossing: New Horizons - What Would You Like To See Added In An Update?

DonSerrot

I was kinda surprised that I could only use the left stick with the tool ring. It'd make sense to let me use the right stick since that's on the opposite hand from the tool ring button. You can't change the camera while in the tool ring anyway and that'd make it even faster to use.

They could even take that to the next level and make it so holding the tool ring button keeps the window open, and releasing the button equips the selected tool and closes the window so I don't have to push button, pick item, then push another button to equip.

Re: Random: Scared Of Spiders? Then Don’t Try This Animal Crossing: New Horizons Trick

DonSerrot

I just tried this and it certainly does work, but there are some things to keep in mind. It takes a good amount of time to set up. About half an hour spent just prepping the island. You'll also still get other bug spawns. I had to scare away a lot of regular ground bugs, and mole crickets were the bane of my existence. It can take a few laps before a tarantula spawns so patience is key. Also, an island with multiple elevations can be a pain when you have a spawn spot where they just run into a wall most of the time since the wall can block the net. I had a more fishing focused island that did spawn a small number of bugs so my spawn rates weren't the greatest. I imagine if I had gotten an island that didn't normally spawn bugs at all then I wouldn't have seen any so that's another thing to keep in mind.

It's a really nifty trick, but I don't see me doing it much more than this one time. It's a bit grindy for my taste.

Re: Talking Point: Has Coronavirus Finally Put E3 Out Of Its Misery?

DonSerrot

I don't think E3 needs to go away, but it does need to change. Nintendo showed really well that you don't need to do a big awkward press conference when you can do a pre-recorded direct instead. They could dial back the wait times by having the game demos available for download for a limited time, and having the show floor be more focused on new hardware instead. The diehard fans who want to try the latest hardware still go, but the demo focused people don't. Maybe even work out a deal with the different gaming platforms for a digital E3 pass that grants access to the demos to keep it profitable. Plus, with digital demos people could stay home if they are sick and still take part in E3. Seems like it'd be a win all around to me.

Re: No Smash Ultimate DLC Expected Beyond Fighters Pass 2, No Future Smash Games Planned

DonSerrot

There is no way Nintendo will let Smash end here, but this will be the end of Smash for the Switch. My takaway is they are going to take a rest since the plan is for the Switch to have a longer console life than normal. They can wait and save starting work on the next Smash for when the next console is close to release. There'd be no rush for a Smash at next console launch since Ultimate is sure to keep the community going well into the future. Sakurai and his team has more than earned a break.

Re: Round Up: The Sonic Movie Reviews Are In, And They Don't Make For Pretty Reading

DonSerrot

I stopped listening to movie critics ages ago. Taste is subjective, and I think they are forced to consume so many movies that they are the world's pickiest eaters. As for me, I grew up with Sonic so I have that nostalgia factor that a lot of those critics probably lack. This movie is nostalgia bait, not Oscar bait. I'm going into the movie expecting to be entertained and that's enough for me.
