Re: Reaction: Nintendo's First Mobile App, Miitomo, Targets the Lucrative Depths of the Blue Ocean

DonSerrot

I'm honestly not that excited about this. Do I think it's an interesting idea? Sure. I'll probably check it out too when it does launch. I just don't think it was the right thing to start off with and the fact that they are delaying it to promote it at an easier time is just... no. It's mobile and it's free. You release when it's ready and let the product speak for itself. People will give it a spin because it's free and because it's Nintendo so there's no need for promotion. They also shouldn't have announced this on it's own. They should have picked one or two other mobile games to announce with it. Say Miitomo is launching in a couple weeks and the other games are launching 2nd quarter next year and leave it at that.

Re: Video: Catch Up With Famitsu's Most Recent Monster Hunter X (Cross) Feature

One big thing to remember with this is it's going to take some time for them to translate what with how text heavy things can get with menus, items and dialog when you aren't bashing things in the face. With how well 4U has been doing in the West and how vocal fans have been about wanting it I'd be surprised if we DIDN'T see this game sooner rather than later. My gut says we probably won't see anything about a Western release until at least E3 next year. I'd love for them to prove me wrong on that though and say something sooner.

Re: Analysts Talk About Nintendo's Upcoming Mobile Release Strategy

DonSerrot

A desperate move? Yes, that's how it came across to me. Making mobile their focus? Heck no! Nintendo has already started that they are looking to us mobile to help push people back towards the console games. I'm expecting tie-in games that might give a bonus of some kind in the console games. Even though it's operating separately from Nintendo the Pokemon Company is looking at ways to use Pokemon Go with future games in the series. I imagine it's because Nintendo already has that planned and Pokemon is looking to tap into it. Will this make it break Nintendo? Hardly. It's an old and strong company. It's not going anywhere.

Re: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Passes Four Million Global Sales

DonSerrot

A friend of mine gave me MH3U a while back and I just couldn't get into it. It was fun enough playing the game with him and beating up the monsters, but the water fights were a royal pain on the old 3DS and I felt lost in the village. I figured I'd give the series another chance with 4U and at least have fun hunting with my friend again. Unfortunately the latter didn't quite work out due to his work schedule going crazy, but 4U completely turned the series around for me. I even got 3U on sale for the Wii U and it's playable now that I understand things better, though a bit jarring going back to before jump attacks and mounting. I can't wait for HMX and all the amazing looking things I've been seeing about it.

Re: The Pokémon Company Withdraws Settlement in Lawsuit Over Copyright Infringement

DonSerrot

@lanceorr They do so by making original works based off the IPs. There was actually a big todo about a Brony artist not too long ago who was caught tracing art assets from the show and using that traced art in merchandise. I actually knew the guy and I believe him when he said he didn't realize he was doing something wrong. He was actually pretty lucky that Hasbro didn't go after him like The Pokemon Company is doing here.

I think the main thing is this guy not only used official art assets for the advertising but he also used the event to make money via the tickets and probably whatever business it brought to his cafe. I personally think a C&D would have been more than enough here. That said I only minimally feel bad for the guy. It was an unfair situation to find himself in, but I really don't like how he's handled it. He's literally gotten other people to pay for his wrongdoing and now he's basically been told "you can't do that now". In this situation both sides lose no matter what.

Re: Video Game Voice Actors Contemplate Strike Action Over Pay and Conditions

DonSerrot

I've spent some time with animation voice actors at conventions and I typically hear the same thing every time someone asks how they got into some popular role. They don't pick and choose what jobs they do, they apply for everything because if they don't then they don't eat. They love what they do, but they make just enough to get by. Of course this is animation and not video game. I don't often see the two overlap, at least not with the shows/games I tend to watch/play. I know WoW uses a lot of in house people for new voices and occasionally grab someone like Jim Cummings for characters like Lorewalker Cho but that's really it. VAs like Jim Cummings and Tara Strong are just everywhere. The rest wish they could be so lucky to constantly have work like that.

The point is as hard as it is for animation VAs I can only imagine how much harder it is for video game VAs. I think Wil means we'll and wants to help his fellow VAs, but he isn't the best representative since he has made quite a bit of money from his acting career. Not all voice actors have that kind of money. Heck, most don't even get recognized for their work! I regretfully admit I sat right next to one at a hotel bar at a convention and had no clue until someone told me. And VAs I wasn't as excited to see turned out to be characters I loved in other shows. I saw an MLP convention turn into an Edd, Ed, and Eddy con because the two guests who were minor MLP roles were also Edd and Ed.

I think better working conditions for sure should be a priority, at least so that they can go audition for more work and not have their voices shot.

Re: Review: Hatsune Miku: Project MIRAI DX (3DS)

DonSerrot

I played the demo and I feel like I'm going to have a love/hate relationship with this game. The first song showed me everything that I wanted to see with this game and I had an absolute blast with it. The second song however gave me lots of problems. The audio portion felt weak compared to the music and I couldn't find where the rhythm in the music and the beats I needed to tap came together. I played through both Ouendan games with no problem so there certainly isn't a language problem here, music is a universal language after all. It just felt like that second song was built wrong. That said, as long as the rest of the songs are built like that first song (and based on the review it seems to be a safe bet) then I'm sure I'll have a fantastic time with this game. Though I do wish we could get another Elite Beat Agents/Ouendan style game with everything on the touch screen. I know everyone likes to push for 3D on the 3DS but I'd be perfectly happy with a game that put the focus on the bottom screen and used the top screen for intermission hijinks.

Re: Latest Wii U System Update Removes TVii On European Consoles, Piles On Stability Elsewhere

DonSerrot

@Moon I tend to do a poor job of keeping track of my TV remote so the Gamepad has been my go to remote. It also works with my satellite receiver so I don't have to go searching for that remote either. I'm not that good with remotes. >.>

One of my favorite parts of it is the +/- buttons control the volume when the remote interface is on. If I'm playing a game and need to change the volume quick everything is already right there in my hands.

Re: Monster Hunter X (Cross) Confirmed for Japanese Release

DonSerrot

To everyone complaining about this being so close behind 4U I thought what we got this year was the translation of Japan's 4G from last year, and that 4G was 4 with extra content added after the main story. From what I've seen this series gets rapid releases in Japan and with 4 they just decided to make us wait for the final version.

I hope we don't get stuck with a big wait for this one, it looks pretty fun.

Re: Mario Kart 8's 200cc Mode Has Apparently Negated Firehopping

DonSerrot

I always hated snaking. I enjoyed the online mode in MK DS and 7 until those things started happening and mostly avoided online with 8 once the firehopping videos started showing up. I tried it offline and for once I actually was able to pull it off, but it just feels like a dirty tactic to me and I don't want to be stuck doing something I feel is dirty just so I can have a chance at winning. This news pleases me, now I just need to get good at handling 200cc. XD

Re: Review: Donkey Kong 64 (Wii U eShop / Nintendo 64)

DonSerrot

I remember when my parents got my sister and I a bundle of the N64, DK64, two controllers, the expac and the strategy guide. I played it through and through. Did everything I could possibly do except beat the original Donkey Kong the second time. A few years ago I decided to try again and finally pulled it off. It was a great feeling finally getting to finish the game. My father, sister and I also had a lot of fun with the multiplayer once we got another controller to use.

Re: We Have Shigeru Miyamoto To Thank For The Super Stable 3D Of The New Nintendo 3DS

DonSerrot

I haven't been able to get one yet, but a couple of my friends did and let me check things out. I've never really had a problem with the 3D on my old 3DS (and I always prefer 3D on) but the improvements are noticeable on the new 3DS. I'm probably more interested in the other improvement's, but this one is certainly a welcome one and adds to how worth it i think it will be to upgrade.

Re: Nintendo Confirms Wil Wheaton as Voice Actor for Abraham Lincoln in Code Name S.T.E.A.M.

DonSerrot

I grew up with Star Trek:TNG and I'm a big fan of Wil's Table Top series on YouTube so this is pretty cool to see. I'll be honest, had I not heard about this I probably never would have been able to tell it was him. After though I can't unhear him in that trailer. I was already thinking about picking up the game after I get around to upgrading to the New 3DS, I'll probably grab it for sure now.

On a side note, apparently he's also providing the voice for the male player characters in the Firefly MMO that's in the works. Sounds like it's a pretty fun time for him right now with all the cool stuff he's working on.

Re: Donkey Kong Grabs a Place in List of Highest-Grossing Arcade Machines

DonSerrot

I remember one of the arcades where I grew up would put two credits in every machine before they'd open on Saturdays. My father and I would try to get there early sometimes so we could play the free games. And I'll never forget the time he and I decided we were going to finish the Wild West Cowboys of Moo Mesa game cone hell or high water. Not sure how many times we had to run to get more coins, but in the end we triumphed. The state of arcades today kills me a little every time I think about it. It's something my father shared with my sister and I that I won't be able to share with my future children.

Re: Capcom Has Now Sold 1.2 Million Copies of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition

DonSerrot

I'll be honest, despite not being a Street Fighter fan I got this because I had an itch for a fighting game and Dead or Alive Dimensions wasn't out yet. It didn't really do anything to change my feelings about the series one way or the other and the moment DoA was out Street Fighter went into a long slumber. I dunno, Street Fighter has always just been a big "meh" for me.

Re: Nintendo Secures Second Patent Win Over Creative Kingdoms

DonSerrot

You know what always kicks me with these things? Regardless of the outcome the company going against Nintendo is going to get a black eye in the view of the fans. I had never heard of them before, but now they've kinda made sure I'll avoid them in the future just on principle.

Re: Motorola's New Smart Watch Features a Goldeneye-Style Interface Option

DonSerrot

The title is a bit misleading and it's easy to miss the clarification in the article. This isn't a watchface just for the Moto 360, it's one already available on the Play Store for any of the current Android Wear smartwatches. It does look great on the Moto 360, however, the Phandroid article in the source does make a good point about the LG G Watch R looking more like the design of the Goldeneye watch.

I'm with HipsterDashie in wanting to wait and see how the watch fares after it's seen a bit of real world testing. One Android news site already revised their feelings about the battery saying that it won't go a full 24 hours, but made a good point in asking if a watch battery really does need to go for days on end when it can easily charge overnight while you sleep.

Also, the watchface app for reference.

Re: Former Cing Vice President Would Like the Story of Hotel Dusk to Continue

DonSerrot

I remember Hotel Dusk fondly. I actually lost the original copy I had and bought a second copy just so I could go back to it again in the future. I didn't hear about what happened to Cing, though I did know they had done a sequel that never made it to the US. I'm actually kinda glad they passed on the rights to Nintendo. Maybe if enough people say they want it Nintendo could do something with the IP and let Bellwood work with them on it.
