Re: Soapbox: Game Freak Could Actually Learn A Thing Or Two From Palworld

DonSerrot

When I'm out exploring in Palworld it feels a lot like when I was exploring in Legends Arceus. When I'm back at the base I feel like I'm playing ARK with less of the frustration. It's like this game took the better parts of other games and combined/built off them. It's far from perfect, but I'm having a ton of fun with it and hope that it pushes GameFreak out of their rut.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom: Where Does It Fit In The Zelda Timeline?

DonSerrot

I honestly think trying to give the games a "definitive" timeline was a huge mistake. I think it's better to treat each game as it's own legend. I think Nintendo at that time was trying to jump on a trend and didn't realize how much of a headache it'd be in the future. If they decided to unify the timeline or just throw it away completely I'd fully understand why. That stuff is more fun when left as fan theories.

Re: Poll: Which Was Your First 'Final Fantasy'?

DonSerrot

Technically it's Crystal Chronicles for me. I had the fancy GBA cables for Four Swords and wanted another game that used them so I picked it up. Never got very far in it due to nobody else being terribly interested in playing it with me. After that I had fun with My Life as a King. I picked up a Crystal Chronicles DS game too at some point, but I didn't play much of it either.

After all that I didn't touch the series again until I started playing XIV coming up on two years now. I have mild interest in XVI, but it'll need to make it over to PC for me to think about picking it up. Also I need to see some Carbuncle. XVI looks like it's "oops all summoners" but I've yet to see my favorite little sparkle critter. And I hope that Yoshi-p from XIV and Yoshi-p from XVI can work together on a cool crossover event. They both have the same name so that should make things easier.

Re: Ubisoft CEO Apologises For Internal Comments After Weak Software Sales

DonSerrot

I feel even more justified in not giving Ubisoft my money after that non-apology.

I never really cared about Ubisoft's games much so I started out indifferent. The original Mario+Rabbids didn't do much for me so I wasn't planning on getting the sequel to begin with. Arlo's video about why he wouldn't be reviewing it mirroring my own feelings about ActiBlizz just kinda solidified it. And spoiler alert, it wasn't the employees or the games being bad that were the reasons, it was the take no responsibility CEO. The same one who just hit his people with a "sorry you feel that way" after getting called out for throwing all the blame at his employees. YOU are in charge. YOU are the reason for the failures. YOU need to fix YOURSELF. Start with the non-apology garbage.

Re: 75% Of Public Comments On Microsoft's Acquisition Of Activision Were Positive

DonSerrot

Right now ActiBlizz is dead to me. They made a big show of dismissing people who publicly got caught, but kept the old leadership that allowed things to get so bad in the first place. That tells me there is still a lot of rot festering under the surface. The recent launches of Diablo Immortal and Overwatch 2 show me a company that is trying to bleed it's player base dry before selling out. WoW Dragonflight is a familiar song and dance to me, them screwing up big time and making something good to bring people back before slipping back into their old ways. I was heavily into the Blizzard side of things, so I have zero frame of reference for the Activision/King sides of things.

I personally want to see this deal go through because I have ZERO faith in ActiBlizz fixing themselves, and my hope would be Microsoft at least doing something about the leadership. If the deal goes through I watch what happens with the leadership to decide if I want to go back. If the deal fails I continue on not playing their games anymore. And let's be honest here, ActiBlizz wants to sell. If this deal fails they'll just go to like Tencent or something else. I extra don't want that. Microsoft I'm at least semi-positive about thanks to Minecraft.

As far as exclusivity goes, we've been dealing with exclusives my whole life. I really don't care at all about that argument. I own a Switch for Nintendo exclusives. I own a PC for most everything else. I look at Playstation exclusives and shrug. I look at Xbox and see "Xbox/Windows exclusive". Regardless of if this passes or fails there will still be exclusives in the world. And even then we have Microsoft maintaining Minecraft on ALL platforms. They don't have to do that, but they still do it anyway.

My stance on this is purely about cleaning the rot in the company. I'm not holding my breath one way or the other. I just feel like this is the best chance we get at it. I'm not terribly keen on the consolidation of companies, but for this very specific case I feel that consolidation is the lesser of the evils and fixing the rot is more important.

Re: Video: New Switch Hardware Won't Stop Bad Ports

DonSerrot

I tend to not talk about ports, but I've been saying for a while now that that there aren't really good excuses for games to run poorly on the Switch. Breath of the Wild set a high bar at launch, back when there weren't as many known tricks for optimization. And Monster Hunter Rise showed that a third party is fully capable of making a fantastic looking game that runs well just as much as Nintendo is. There have also been plenty of specialized studios focused specifically on working miracles with Switch ports. It's all dev work. Stronger hardware might mitigate the problem a little, but it won't fix unoptimized games. It's the same with PC gaming. A monster PC will still struggle with a badly optimized game.

Re: Bayonetta 3's New Voice Actor Asks Everyone To "Just Be Good To Each Other"

DonSerrot

While she was nowhere near one of them, there are voice actors out there who's work is being undervalued. I think it's really unfortunate the choices Taylor made because there was a good message that will probably get overshadowed by what she did. What she did is all anyone is going to talk about while voice actors who actually are being undervalued will be largely ignored. I think that the main thing I want to take away from this is what she said was so believable because it is a thing that is happening all the time. Her specific story may not have been entirely truthful, but there were quite a few voice actors speaking out about their own experiences. Forget her, but remember them. The repercussions of this reach farther than just this one game.

Re: Talking Point: Given The Voice Artist Controversy, Will You Be Boycotting Bayonetta 3?

DonSerrot

I will not be boycotting the game. There is still a lot we don't know, like how much work time that flat $4k was supposed to cover. I do think that feels low, but I don't work in that kind of field so I can only go off what others say about it. We also only really have one side of this story because of NDAs. And that side we do have is lashing out in ways that don't feel right to me, like saying Hale doesn't have the right to sign stuff as Bayonetta's voice. In the end though, I feel like this is more a situation that falls on the specific part of the company handling translation and voice work, not the whole company. I'm still going to enjoy the game. I'm sad to see Taylor burning bridges and probably torpedoing her voice acting career by breaking an NDA like this, but if she is sacrificing her career I do hope it helps get the message out that voice actors do need better pay, even if her ire feels misplaced to me the message behind it still stands.

Re: Feature: How Stardew Valley Grew The Farm Sim While Harvest Moon Went To Seed

DonSerrot

When I was younger I spent a lot of time with Harvest Moon 64 and Friends of Mineral Town. FoMT was by far my favorite of the two, especially with it's portability on the GBA. I had a lot of the same frustrations with future titles in the series as Barone. There was a magic to Mineral Town that was missing in the games that came after. I actually held off on Stardew for a good while because I didn't want to get my hopes up, but after reading about how Barone's favorite Harvest Moon was the PS1 version of my favorite and a hard to pass up sale I bit. And I had so much fun with it I felt like I had robbed the dev by getting it on sale and thought nothing about picking it up again when the Switch version came around.

I've recently been playing through it again to check out the new additions from the last couple updates. The game felt complete before, but it's still great to see it continue to grow and improve. I feel like the downfall of other farming sim games is they try too hard to differentiate themselves with some sort of theme. One of Stardew's biggest strengths is it doesn't overcomplicate things. You are there to farm. There are other stories, but you get to choose if you interact with them or not. Things like the Community Center and Joja Mart give the player goals they can work towards and open up more parts of the game, but those are entirely optional and there if you want them. It doesn't force you, you can go at your own pace and do what you want. It's simple and empowering. And adding in options for different farm layouts and remixed Community Center bundles helps keep things fresh for revisits.

Re: Poll: So, What’s Your Verdict On The Mario Movie Trailer?

DonSerrot

I for sure want to see more. I'm sold on everything except Chris Prat's Mario voice, but they gave him almost 2 lines in the trailer so I'm not sure I feel comfortable judging that too harshly yet. You can tell Jack Black had the time of his life voicing Bowser and the rest of the voice work felt good. I'm looking forward to the next trailer and hoping we get to see and hear more of the rest of the cast.

Re: Video: Masahiro Sakurai Talks About Frame Rates In Games

DonSerrot

I think the most important thing for frame rates is consistency over high numbers. I'll always like seeing 60FPS, but if it's jumping all over the place most of the time I'd rather just cap it at 30 and call it good. I like it when a game that CAN hit 60FPS some of the time gives an option. That way people can decide for themselves how much it does or doesn't bother them.

Re: The Title Of Capcom's Next Monster Hunter Game May Have Been Leaked

DonSerrot

I'm not going to comment on the validity of this, but I will always hope for future entries to be present on Nintendo's hardware. One of the biggest selling points for me with the series was portability. I skipped World because it lacked that. I think the best thing for the series would be both PC and Switch releases along with either cross play or cross save functionality. I sincerely hope that Capcom listens to the feedback people have been giving about that. I know I'd be tempted to pick up the game twice for cross save.

Re: Soapbox: Correcting A Horrifying 15-Year Mistake By Finally Playing Elite Beat Agents

DonSerrot

My first job was near a Gamestop, and I used to go there during my lunch break to check out games and grab demos from the DS Download Station. I remember the day I tried the Elite Beat Agents demo and ended up going out of my way to make sure the DS didn't turn off (wiping the demo) until I could go back the next day to get a copy. It was absolutely one of my top three favorite DS games, with the two Ouendan games filling the other top spots. I didn't even have to understand Japanese to enjoy them, the images of each story spoke for themselves. These games are absolutely worth playing if you can find them.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Favourite Nintendo Switch Screenshot?

DonSerrot

I capture screenshots and video all the time. I wouldn't even be able to begin hazarding a guess at how many since I have done multiple backups across multiple storages. I think my favorite though is still the perfect end of hunt screen I got last summer in Monster Hunter Rise. I was doing a rampage hunt and was crashing a Bazel into the target monster. This became my desktop wallpaper for a good while.

Re: 'Switch Pro' Trends On Social Media After Massive Nvidia Leak Reignites Speculation

DonSerrot

I wish people would realize that Nintendo is always working on stuff. Just because they work on something doesn't mean it's happening NOW. They had GBAs with 3D screens and it took them multiple hardware generations to actually go anywhere with that. I 100% believe they are doing internal tests with DLSS, but there is always a chance of nothing coming from those tests for the near future. People hyping themselves up for a Switch Pro or Switch 2 are only setting themselves up for disappointment in the near term. It's well past time to wake up and realize that no amount of "leaks" or speculation is going to make it happen. We've been doing this for five years already. Predicting that the company who has said they are always working on the next thing is working on the next thing is like predicting that somewhere in the world a cat is going to lick itself today. Meaningless. It's better to have low expectations and get a pleasant surprise than to overly hype yourself up and get disappointment.

Re: Video: Three Pokémon Games In One Year? Game Freak, Slow Down

DonSerrot

As much as I enjoyed Legends Arceus I really wish they had waited a little longer to release it. They could have spent the rest of this year refining it and it would have been a great end of year release. Then make Gen9 the end of 2023 release. As it currently stands my fear is none of what worked well in Legends Arceus will carry forward. They really need to take more time for these things.

Re: Poll: The End Is Coming, But How Much Will You Miss The Wii U And 3DS eShop?

DonSerrot

I was ready to move on once the Switch came out. It was bound to happen eventually, so I'm not really surprised. The only real loss here is the virtual console, and I don't see the NSO offering as a suitable replacement. That said, it also doesn't bug me personally that much because I'm not really one to go back to play old games. It's mainly thinking about my friends who do like playing those games. And as long as they keep the ability to redownload already purchased stuff for a good while longer I'm fine. Though I did have a big hard drive connected to my WiiU so I should still have everything there. The 3DS had a bit less space to work with.

Re: Talking Point: Where Does The Switch OLED Announcement Leave The Rumoured Switch Pro?

DonSerrot

I think they for sure got confused with the OLED. I also think a 4k Switch is inevitable, be it as an upgrade much later in life or as a full new Switch 2. I think there's too much demand for Nintendo to just ignore it, but I imagine it's probably not quite where Nintendo wants it quality wise for release. These "leakers" are just going to keep pushing it being immanent until it actually happens. The reality is even if Nintendo has a fully functional prototype OLED with 4k right now it may not ever see the light of day. Backlight Gameboy and GBA with a 3D screen say "hi". But like I said before, the demand for it should have it on Nintendo's radar, people are just too desperate for it to happen NOW to think that maybe it's not as simple as that.

Re: Teenager Hits $1.7 Million In Revenue During Pandemic Reselling Pokémon Cards, Game Consoles And More

DonSerrot

It's a free country, and perfectly legal for the kid to do this. Doesn't mean I have to like it. I'm not a fan of preying on people for a quick buck. Scalpers buying and reselling marked up goods only adds to the scarcity and prevents some of the customers actually interested in the product from getting it. Somewhere out there is a kid who has been saving birthday money and doing odd jobs to save up so they could get something, only to find there's no stock and the price has been doubled on ebay. The last thing we need to do is celebrate scalpers. We need to just not buy from them. Let them sit on their throne of unsold xboxes in shame so they stop scalping them. Don't buy anything above the MSRP. Don't let these people take advantage of you. So long as people keep giving them money this can only get worse.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Delivered An Excellent E3 Direct For Fans Old And New

DonSerrot

I was very happy. While most of what was shown didn't excite me I'd say that's normal for me. But there was a wealth of stuff there and quite a bit of it was stuff that I knew would make others really happy. The stuff I saw that did grab my attention looked really good, and while there were a couple things I was hoping to see that weren't there (please give me something about Bayonetta 3) I kinda expected to still not hear about them so it met my expectations there at least. Over all I was left feeling fairly positive with what we did see and that's what matters.

Re: Switch Pro Rumours Intensify As New Retailer Listing Appears Online

DonSerrot

Do I put much stock in the rumors? No. Switch Pro rumors have been circulating ever since the console launched. Remember a couple years back when the v2 Switch was supposed to be the Pro? Or when the Switch Lite was supposed to be the Pro? It will for sure happen at some point, but I'll believe it when Nintendo reveals it. I believe Nintendo tends to save upgraded versions for mid-late cycle to boost sales numbers, so we are about at the right spot for it, but the original Switch is still selling like crazy so it's also not exactly needed yet. The only thing I se that could force Nintendo's hand is Nvidia stopping production on the chip the Switch uses. Nintendo could try to move all the existing Switch hardware before introducing a revision. We just don't know. This feels like the "NX tomorrow" thing all over again.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Hardware Refreshes Through The Ages

DonSerrot

I was really excited for the New 3DS swappable face plates, but then Nintendo decided to just give us the XL version in the US with no face plates. The New 3DS XL did make a night and day difference for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate though. Seeing it play on a friend's New 3DS vs my launch 3DS made the decision to upgrade easy.

Re: Talking Point: Should Nintendo Do More DLC For Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Or Just Release Mario Kart 9 Already?

DonSerrot

I feel like with the fact that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling there isn't too much need for Mario Kart 9 on the Switch. It would be great to see some new DLC cups for 8 Deluxe though. Maybe when we get that half generation boost from whatever Switch Pro we eventually get they can take the opportunity to update the game to take advantage of new hardware features if available (kinda like how Breath of the Wild was updated to support the video capture function) and add some more DLC at the same time.

Re: Humble Bundle Will Begin To Cap Charity Donations Next Month

DonSerrot

This is really disappointing. I've always slammed that charity slider to the max when getting a bundle. I never liked how low the actual charity portion defaulted to, but I accepted it since I could change it. This change ensures that hardly anything goes to the charity and that doesn't feel right to me. At least make the bigger portion go to the charity, not the smallest. I always thought that this was supposed to be a easy way for publishers to donate game keys to help raise money for charity. Seems like Humble Bundle has lost its way.

Re: Soapbox: After 17 Years, Monster Hunter Rise Finally Made Me Kind Of Competent

DonSerrot

@DarthFoxMcCloud I feel like most people feel a little overwhelmed with their first Monster Hunter. A friend have me 3U a long time ago and I couldn't figure anything out aside from how to join my friend for a hunt. Starting with 4U I feel like they did a better job of weaving the tutorial into the story and pacing out adding more complexity to the player's toolkit. In Rise they make sure you don't miss something important by telling you about it, and then bringing up a window with a more in depth explanation of what you were just told. They also keep those more in depth explanations in part of the menu in case you need it again.

Re: Soapbox: After 17 Years, Monster Hunter Rise Finally Made Me Kind Of Competent

DonSerrot

I feel like there are two main things that help Rise feel easier than past games on the series. The streamlining of things like not needing temperature drinks and gathering tools means the player can focus more on the actual hunt while gathering almost becomes a passive thing done while chasing the monsters from one area to the next. The other thing is the incredible movement that wirebugs give. It's a lot harder to get caught in a monster's combo when you can spiderman out of it. That makes it easier to stay alive and in the fight. Combine that with permanent tracking and using the wirebugs or the dogs to zip around the map and you get more time efficient, and thus easier feeling, monster hunting. We're also only at low and early high rank right now. Soon we'll have an unlocked hunter rank to kick our teeth in. Right now the hunts feel comfortable and are perfect for experimenting with gear and techniques and over all improving as a player. This Monster Hunter gives us all the tools we need to succeed and takes away the ones we don't need and is all the better for it.

Re: Soapbox: Monster Hunter Rise Is The Perfect Hybrid Game

DonSerrot

I completely skipped World because the thing that has always made the series shine for me was portability and quirkiness and it felt like World was stepping away from both. In Rise I can sharpen my umbrella greatsword while riding on my dog's back. And said umbrella opens when I use charged attacks. And I can do all this while sitting in front of my TV, in the passenger seat of the car, or on the toilet.

Some of the QoL changes are kinda weird for me. I don't miss things like paint bombs in the slightest, but they are so ingrained for me that it almost feels like cheating not needing them. I do feel like I should have to find the monster on my own initially with tracking being permanent for the rest of the hunt, so there's be a counterbalance still like how there's still a risk when using items since you are slow walking.

I haven't got the hub quests yet, but so far the village quests have been really easy. I'm not sure if it's me being a better player or if it's me abusing all the extra mobility the wirebugs give my slow greatsword wielding butt. In the past I always had to go a bit heavier with defense to help compensate for all the hits I'd end up taking, and lots of honey to replenish my mega potions. I still get hit, but not combo'd because I can use a bug to get away asap. And having all my stuff available at the camp means no need to carry backup supplies on me. If I need more potions I can go back to camp for them. No more accidentally going into a hunt with a bunch of stuff I picked up in the last one, or at least no more of that being a problem since I can put it all in the box at camp too. Even eating at the camp is an option. This is the most convenient Monster Hunter I've ever played, in a mostly good way. The one thing this game is missing for me is my favorite monster. Hopefully it'll be one of the "several" monsters added in future updates.

I'm waiting to see the final form this game takes before deciding if it unseats 4U as my favorite game in the series. I felt more invested in 4U's story, but Rise still has more story coming in the future so my feelings could change. Mechanically though this is by far the best.

Re: Feature: The Bloodthirsty History Of Monster Hunter, From Sony PlayStation To Nintendo Switch

DonSerrot

A friend of mine gave me a copy of 3U back in the day, and while I had fun doing multiplayer hunts with him I just couldn't get into the single player side of it. I still really liked the concept, so I decided to give the series another chance when 4U came along and then I was hooked. That improved story focus really went a long way to not only keep me interested, but it even helped me better understand the core mechanics of the game that I missed before. I continued on with Generations, but skipped World. One of the biggest selling points for me was it being a style of game that it didn't seem like anyone else was doing portably, so having it be only available tethered to my TV was the biggest downgrade in my eyes. Some of my greatest hunting achievements came during things like road trips and in the middle of the night while not being able to sleep while visiting family. That freedom to hunt anytime and anywhere was the true strength of the series for me, and World couldn't offer that to me. Generations and Generations Ultimate though. chef's kiss Being able to fine tune my play style meant that instead of hauling my great sword to the nearest ledge to cheese mount spam I could turn the monster itself into the ledge with aerial style. And I thoroughly enjoyed the extra story they added in GU. And so many monsters to hunt! I still have fonder memories of 4U, but GU was for sure a greatest hits and I loved every second with it. So far the demo and previews for Rise have me very excited. I can tell they found the best middle ground between the previous portable MH titles and World's QOL changes. The game looks great without the areas feeling cluttered (a complaint I had every time I saw World's gameplay) and it's maintained portability! I do feel that giving players options is always a good thing, so I'm glad that it'll be getting a PC release for those who want it in the future, and I'm really hoping that they continue doing both options going forward.

Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Leaked Online A Week Before Launch

DonSerrot

@Uncensored I don't know if they still do this, but back then Nintendo had representatives who would go to game stores to give the staff advance previews for new games. Hyping up a game is much easier when you've had hands on time with it. I think that's who we contacted, but the truth is my friend just asked if he could copy my receipt to send to Nintendo and I didn't ask questions.

Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Leaked Online A Week Before Launch

DonSerrot

Y'all gotta remember, this isn't likely an inside Nintendo issue. It's stores, who need to have the stock in place early, letting copies sell the moment they come in instead of waiting for the actual street date. I remember getting a copy of Hotel Dusk early from WalMart back in the day. Went to a friend at GameStop and was like "look at what WalMart just did" and we reported them to Nintendo for breaking the street date. Some store's workers just don't care or don't know enough to care. Stock comes in, stock goes up for sale. That's probably why some places started putting blocks in the systems to not let games be sold until the release date.

Re: Poll: Pokémon Sword And Shield Launched A Year Ago, Has Your Opinion On Them Changed?

DonSerrot

@PikaPlayz Oh don't get me wrong. I understand what they ended up going for in the story, I'm just saying what they went for wasn't very fun or engaging. The whole time I felt like there were really cool ideas but they didn't have time to actually implement them, so they just had Leon and Sonia take care of them off screen while I get shoved off to the next gym where my astounding knowledge of type effectiveness means I get to one shot everything the gym throws at me. The story needed something more fulfilling to do in the middle bits instead of trying to save it all for the end.

Re: Poll: Pokémon Sword And Shield Launched A Year Ago, Has Your Opinion On Them Changed?

DonSerrot

I honestly would have been able to look past the whole Pokedex thing if anything had actually come of it, but there were was too many cut corners for it to be anything more than a time issue. White void battle backgrounds, N64 trees, animations like double kick, pop in, routes that are just a straight line, all signs that this game was rushed out before it was ready. The biggest frustration for me was honestly the story. You could tell there was potential for a really cool story, but they didn't have the time to flesh it out so they just had most of it happen in the background while shuffling you from one gym to the next. Past Pokemon games were empowering and let you feel like a hero for nearly the whole journey. SwSh didn't let the player be a hero until almost the very end of the game. The lack of polish in all aspects of a $60 game from the most valuable franchise in the world is a major disappointment. The DLC did a better job of letting you feel like you were on an adventure. Did I still have fun? Yes. But it wasn't worth the price of admission.

Re: Capcom Hack Reveals Great Ace Attorney Collection And Mysterious New Switch Project "Guillotine"

DonSerrot

Monster Hunter Rise on PC? I did not see that coming. It does make sense though. platform exclusivity only really makes sense if you own the hardware too. For a third party you'll get more out of having a game on as many platforms as possible. Now the real question is if Rise will have cross platform multiplayer or not. It's unfortunate that this got leaked though. The knowledge that a PC version is coming will probably hurt the sales of the Switch version. I'm more interested in playing MonHun portably so my plans aren't changing there, but I know there are plenty of people out there who prefer playing on a PC if given the option.

Re: Video: Another Famous Zelda Location Returns In Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity

DonSerrot

@AstroTheGamosian @GamingFan4Lyf Eh. I've long felt that them trying to make all the games into one timeline instead of just letting it be like Mario where each story is it's own thing unless it is specifically made as a sequel was a HUGE mistake. It wasn't really meant to be a coherent timeline, and I feel they only tried to make it one because that's what was popular with the fans at the time. Rather than make things even more convoluted just to try and "fix" the timeline I say let legends be legends. It's the simplest solution and it lets them do whatever works best for each new game going forward just like the old days instead of having to deal with slotting it into the split timeline. I feel like BOTW did exactly that in ignoring the split timeline and it turned out amazing.

@ToadBrigade That doesn't work because Zelda specifically mentions games in each of the different split timelines all within the same cutscene. It'd be one thing if they were just casual references out in the world, but these were part of a full on ceremony. There's no real way around bringing those timelines back together somehow if you want to keep the timelines split. There really isn't a clean way to deal with the timeline anymore.

Re: Video: Another Famous Zelda Location Returns In Hyrule Warriors: Age Of Calamity

DonSerrot

@alexybubble I have two theories when it comes to the Zelda series and BOTW. The first is that the games are exactly what the series calls them, legends. There's an element of truth to a lot of legends, but not everything is true. It's a lot easier for me to sidestep the split timelines by having them be the results of repeated oral retellings over hundreds of thousands of years. The only constant truths you really need are Zelda, Link, and Ganon.

The other is that because BOTW is so far into the future there's a good chance that there are now towns that were made based on the legends of old. They're not the actual locations, but they were built by people who loved the stories of those places. That also works in reverse too. The locations in the old legends could have been based on real more ancient locations. That's why you always have locations like the Lost Woods, but where they are isn't always consistent between games.
