Re: Soapbox: Think of 1-2-Switch as Less of a "Video Game" and Suddenly It Gets Better

DonSerrot

I'll just wait for it's price to drop. The only time I'd play it is probably a few times a year when I visit my sister's family so $50 for a rarely used game seems kinda steep to me. Then again, I've spent more on board games that only get played a few times a year. I guess I'll have to see where I am financially the next time I see them. There's still the whole nobody nearby to play it with thing that would make getting it right away a waste for me.

Re: Nintendo Outlines Pricing Range for Switch Online Service

DonSerrot

This is much better than I had feared. I can see them charging $1.99 a month and $19.99 yearly and having no problems whatsoever. The yearly price says "Thanks for your dedication, here's two months off" and both prices have that "make the price look lower than it really is by dropping a cent" that everyone likes.

Re: Poll: What Are Your Nintendo Switch Pre-Order and Launch Day Plans?

DonSerrot

I'm hoping I can get mine at launch. At the moment I've got almost enough for the Switch itself saved up. Even if I end up not having enough for a game right away I still want to get the Switch purchased, hopefully not getting the chance to get a pre-order in won't be a problem in my area. If I can get enough extra saved I'll be getting BotW for sure. I'm not sure what the biggest extra micro SD card is that I currently have, but I have an 8GB one sitting right in front of me, that'll be something for me to upgrade later.

Re: Game Freak Has Revealed the Third Global Mission for Pokémon Sun and Moon

DonSerrot

Unless it includes wondertrade it's gonna be a bust. Most people who would use the GTS have done so to get what they wanted and the little time I've tried to use it has resulted in frustration sifting through absurd requests (even with the exclude legendary option) only to find one reasonable trade that has already been taken but is still showing up in the list even after I try refreshing the search a few times.

These missions are a neat idea, but poorly implemented.

Re: Nintendo Switch to Introduce Paid Online Service in Autumn / Fall

DonSerrot

Depending on what they charge I'll probably be getting my multiplayer action either offline or on my PC. Realistically though, the only game I've really played online on Nintendo hardware in the last couple years was Splatoon. As sad as I am to say it, I'd be willing to pass on Splatoon 2 and focus more on the single player focused games.

Re: Editorial: The Nintendo Switch 'Power' Debate is Likely Missing the Point

DonSerrot

The smaller a screen gets the less the resolution matters so 720p is perfectly fine for the tablet. I've also seen Nintendo pull off amazing things at 1080p so I'm not worried about how things will look on the TV either. I think the biggest thing for the Switch won't be in power, it'll be how it changes up the way you play your games. Though, honestly, this thing is a portable that has been shown to outperform the Wii U so in my book that's plenty powerful enough for me.

Re: Poll: Nintendo Switch Delivers Single Screen Gaming - Will You Miss the Dual Screen Concept?

DonSerrot

For the DS and 3DS the reason I think dual screens worked so well is because of how close together the screens were. For the Wii U that wasn't really the case. You either had to move your head up and down a lot or hold the controller up in an unusual way in order to have the same at-a-glance experience as the handhelds.

I think the one big thing I'll miss though is the clamshell protecting the screens.

Re: Video: Fresh Yooka-Laylee Footage Emerges From EGX 2016

DonSerrot

@gcunit He said specifically that they were showing the PC version and they weren't showing anything for consoles in general yet. He also said that they weren't going to look at an NX version right now because they wanted to stay focused on releasing for the consoles promised in the Kickstarter. If I remember correctly Playtonic is handling the Wii U and PC versions directly while another company is taking care of the other console ports so really it's a for sure thing for the Wii U.

Re: Capcom Working On New Monster Hunter To "Aggressively" Increase Sales

DonSerrot

I've had a strong feeling that Capcom would release MH5 as an NX title within the console's launch window for a while now in at least Japan. With how well the series has been doing in the West it'd be great to see it hit over here in that window too, though I don't see that being very likely, especially since we just barely got Generations and they probably want to give that some time in the spotlight over here before throwing a new game at us. It for sure will be on a Nintendo console though. Nintendo has been so much better for the series than Sony ever was.

Re: Feature: What Are Your Thoughts, So Far, on Pokémon GO?

DonSerrot

I live in a fairly small town and due to a lack of funds I decided to just go with a free Google Voice number as I'm either at home with Wi-Fi or with a family member at the city about 45 mins away from here. As a result I've not gotten to experience much of Pokemon Go yet. I was gifted a service card for my phone but apparently my sim expired so I'm waiting on a new one to come in the mail. Also the internet at the local coffee place/Ingress portal wasn't working when I walked there the other day so I've not gotten to see if we have any gyms locally. That said what I've been able to experience right by my house has been pretty enjoyable so far. I've managed to get to lvl 5 1/2 just from the Pokemon who have wandered into my yard and a few from WalMart in the city. I'm looking forward to hitting all the old Ingress portals later this week once the new sim comes and hopefully getting some more incense and Pokeballs from the Pokestops.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Sets Criteria to Turn Nintendo's Virtual Reality Research Into a Product

DonSerrot

VR is going to have it's uses, Google has made sure of that with pushing Cardboard and coming up with neat concepts for it like virtual field trips. That said I have to agree that it's just a fad, at least as far as gaming goes. At least with Cardboard it uses something most people already own (a smartphone) and literally some cuts of cardboard. When it comes to gaming level VR it's costly and still trying to figure itself out.

Re: Fans Petition Nintendo To Name Zelda NPC After Deceased Singer Christina Grimmie

DonSerrot

Wasn't there a petition like this when Robin Williams died? If I remember right Nintendo's response was condolences while avoiding saying if they would or wouldn't do anything. I haven't heard anything more since then so I imagine it'd be the same here. Not to mention it's probably a bit late in the new game's production to add a new character like that. While I do think it'd be cool it's still highly unlikely given what history has to show.

Re: Ouendan And Elite Beat Agents Creator Would Love To Continue The Series On Nintendo NX

DonSerrot

@EllenJMiller Same here. I even remember downloading the demo for EBA from the DS Download Station at my Gamestop and not turning off my DS until I could go back the next day to get a copy of the game because I was enjoying just the demo so much. Those three games are my top favorite DS games and I still carry them around with me. I'd love to see a new EBA. Heck, I'd import a Japanese 3DS for a new Ouendan if it came down to it!

Re: Reaction: The NX Could Benefit from Using Cartridges Instead of Discs

DonSerrot

@ThanosReXXX That isn't very likely in my situation. I pretty much live in a closet as is with the only window housing my AC unit. I'm in a small one room building so I have window AC to fight the summer heat and a space heater to fight the winter cold. I also keep the window covered with a blanket to keep the sun from glaring on my computer screen in the afternoon so there's virtually no sunlight in here. Like I said before, dust is a really big problem here. I probably could invest in some kind of disc cleaner to fix most of it, but it'd just be an uphill battle and most of my games at this point are either digital or 3DS games so I'm not too worried about it. It's mostly a problem for my old CDs and DVDs as I've always disliked discs in general because of how easy it is to mess them up. I actually started getting more games once digital was an option.

Re: Reaction: The NX Could Benefit from Using Cartridges Instead of Discs

DonSerrot

I really dislike discs. For some reason mine always get this residue caked onto them even in a case and it's just horrible because they stop working. I've never had any kinds of problems with carts aside from my copy of Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town corrupting the save on me twice. I bet they could get more out of carts by having the save data save to the console instead of the cart maximizing the space on the cart for the game content. Realistically though I'd probably end up still sticking with my mostly digital library. The last time I got a physical game was Hyrule Warriors: Legends because I had a $20 BestBuy gift card from AndroidPay. I have the largest supported storage options for both my N3DS and Wii U so I don't really even have to think about game sizes.

Re: Poll: Nintendo Has Laid Out Its Legend of Zelda E3 Plans - Are They Enough?

DonSerrot

I'm personally hoping for a direct with info on other games either before or after E3 but honestly I don't really mind them going lighter on E3. It just tells me that they are doubling down on getting content ready for the 3DS to carry the rest of the year and to hold up the NX at launch. They can save the info for stuff for later when it's a less crowded time and since I don't really care about the other stuff at E3 I don't really feel the need to invest time in it this year. I can just read up on whatever Zelda news comes out on sites like this after the fact.

Re: Review: Miitomo (Mobile)

DonSerrot

There was an update pushed out today that allows you to link a Western Nintendo Account if you've done the preregistration. I've already done so and started earning Platinum.

Re: Pokémon Go Field Test is Underway in Japan, Though Leakers Are Getting Removed

DonSerrot

Not hearing anything surprising here. Of course it's not gonna come close to the actual Pokemon experience. That'd take away from the actual Pokemon games. I set my expectations to Ingress with a coat of Pokemon paint, so anything more than that will be above my expectations. I'm still looking forward to getting into this just as much as I was getting into Ingress.

Re: Guide: Which Nintendo 3DS or 2DS System Should I Buy?

DonSerrot

The only thing that was a let down with the New 3DS XL was no face plates. A friend of mine was wanting to get a 3D printer and I thought it'd be fun to try making some 3D textured faceplates to try selling but things just didn't work out. His 3D printer was a bust by the time the smaller New 3DS came out.

Re: Fooling The World With a 3D Printed NX Controller

DonSerrot

Boy am I glad it was fake. I thought it was because I just couldn't see Nintendo making that kind of a mistake but then again Nintendo has done stuff that didn't quite make sense to me. I have to say that was a really well done fake and I like how he showed the process of making it. I bet it'll also be some good publicity for his business just showing what kinds of things they can pull off.

Re: Miitomo Update to Expand Friend Options and Features

DonSerrot

Japan is just beta testing the game for the rest of the world. It's probably much easier for them to focus on fixing things just for Japan than it is for them to fix things for the whole world. I know there are still some people having trouble with Twitter integration, anything you type goes FULL CAPSLOCK MODE if you have autocaps turned on for your keyboard on Android, and I occasionally see some graphical issues on my Nexus 5X. I've also seen a couple posts on /r/Miitomo with people who can't even get the app to run on their phones. That said it doesn't seem to be widespread issues, just stuff that I'd expect from something that's not quite ready. I'd say this is about 90%+ ready and after the last little bits of compatibility and stabilization it'll release everywhere else.

Re: Video: Early Pokémon Go Footage Shows Off AR Pocket Monster Catching

DonSerrot

@Bali You are probably gonna be disappointed then. If they put the full battling experience in then that'd undermine the full games. I do imagine we'll have the basic battling with four moves and levels but not all the extra EV/IV stuff. The bigger focus here is gonna be to go exploring and "catch em all".

@XCWarrior That... is a terrible idea. They better not sell any Pokemon, that's not what the game is about. And the thing about people not wanting to leave home was said to death about Ingress (the game this is being derived from) and that game has a thriving community willing to traverse the globe just to capture a point.

Like UNSOLUTEDSALT said, I think they are going to integrate it with Pokemon Bank. In fact I remember hearing someone working on the game say once that they were looking into the possibility of doing just that. No guarantee of course but I con only see that working out well for them. I'd personally love to be able to send my Sylveon to my phone to use on the go, but I image that's less likely than having it be a one way trip from the Phone to the Bank. I like the idea of legendaries being an event thing, and it'd fit in with how Niantic does events for Ingress already so the groundwork for such a thing is there. I wouldn't be surprised if they had the regular Pokemon migrate seasonally so that you have to spend the whole year working on an area to see everything that can be there.

Re: My Nintendo Has Gone Live in Japan, Introduces Exclusive Content and a DS Download on 3DS

DonSerrot

I found a list of the current mission. Looks like Platinum is from doing stuff and Gold is from buying stuff. Also a bunch of the Platinum missions can be done daily. There are 5 single time missions that give 100 Platinum a pop, dailies that give either 5 or 10 a pop, and a couple weeklies at 30 a pop. We'll be over half way to Twilight Princess Picross or Wario Ware Touched right off the bat.

Re: Monster Hunter Generations is Heading to 3DS This Summer

DonSerrot

@RokkuMashu I don't think we are going to be seeing a "Cross G" this time around. This isn't a main series game, more of an anniversary side game. It also already has more quests than 4U has so there isn't going to be a lack of content and from what I've heard the hunts are still challenging even without going up to G rank. I imagine the next game (aside from the already announced spin off games) will be MH5 on the NX and they won't even bother with a G/U version of Cross/Generations. If the rumors pan out and the NX is a hybrid home/handheld console that'll make everyone happy and with how popular MH is in Japan (and is becoming in the US) having the next main series game on the NX early will really push hardware sales.

Re: Nintendo Will Do Well On Mobile Because That's Where Its Core Audience Is Now, Claims Analyst

DonSerrot

I'm nobody! Analyst said so!
Seriously though, no matter how many times I try I simply can't get behind an all touch gaming device. I need physical buttons to press. Mobile gaming is good for quick throw away gaming with a simple setup but that's about it. Nintendo would be wise to not listen to these idiots who think mobile should be the focus. Keep making real games Nintendo.

Re: Random: New 3DS Owner Replaces the C-Stick With a PSP Stick

DonSerrot

I did this mod myself after seeing it on Reddit and it works better than you'd think. The main thing with it is giving you something larger and more solid to work with. There were times where I felt like the rubber nub was squishing into the 3DS while playing Monster Hunter. I've tested it out with the few games that make use of it and it certainly does seem to make a difference.

Re: Macquarie Report Believes a Competitively-Priced Portable NX Could Land This Year, 'Console Partner Device' in 2017

DonSerrot

Wasn't there a patent a while back from Nintendo to use external hardware to boost the power of a console? I bet the "console" part of this patent is the NX handheld and the "external" part is the NX home console. They could put the core game data and some lower quality graphics on the portable NX and have the home NX automatically grab the HD graphics for any game added to your Nintendo account. The only other thing would be to make it so that the core game data could be passed back and forth between the two so the complement each other but don't rely on each other and everyone wins. The only big sticking point would be how to get that core game data to players in the first place. Download is an obvious option. For people like me it's ideal. I've only gotten one game physically since download became an option and that was for a preorder bonus. Digital doesn't work for everyone though so there would need to be another option.

Either way I'm excited to see this thing come E3 should they still be on track to show it off then. Hopefully Monster Hunter sticks with Nintendo (The Big N has been good to the series so I don't see why they wouldn't) because the NX could potentially make everyone happy if these rumors pan out. Portable for those that like the game on the go and home console for those that want the game in full HD glory.
