It's Monday, which means the start of another week, though European Nintendo fans at least have the benefit of the Nintendo Download Update news to brighten the day. This week brings us some excellent titles, old and new, across both the Wii U and 3DS, while there's a major game update that brings some reasonably controversial DLC with it. There's also more DLC, a cross-buy deal and more, so let's get on with it.
Wii U eShop
SteamWorld Dig (Image & Form, €8.99 / £6.99) — The 3DS eShop favourite finally hits the Wii U this week, with improved visuals and animation contributing to the enhancement of the excellent exploration title. With a great soundtrack and impressive gameplay hook this joins the list of must-haves on the Wii U's store, as our SteamWorld Dig review explains.
Wii U eShop Promotion
SteamWorld Dig (Image & Form, €6.49 / £4.99 if you already own the 3DS version on the same Nintendo Network ID)
Wii U Virtual Console
Mario Golf: Advance Tour (Nintendo, €6.99 / £6.29) — This entry in the plumber's golf spin-off series emphasizes its efforts to incorporate RPG aspects into the basic gameplay, which is an area that some fans of these portable sports games particularly love. We'll get into the swing of it for our review.
Wii U DLC
Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo, free) — The modern Mercedes-Benz GLA, the 300 SL Roadster from the 1950s and the legendary Silver Arrow of the 1930s will be added as available DLC following the game's update on 27th August.
Zen Pinball 2 (Zen Studio) — Details listed below, all of these tables have a free trial available.
- The Walking Dead — €2.99 / £2.39
- Doctor Strange — €2.99 / £2.39
- Deadpool — €2.99 / £2.39
- Guardians of the Galaxy — €2.99 / £2.39
3DS Virtual Console
Mega Man V (Capcom, €3.99 / £3.59) — The final Game Boy Mega Man title finally arrives, and it's a good 'un. It diverges — like its predecessor — from mimicking NES versions closely and proceeds to serve up plenty of new weapons to try and bosses to fight. It's a fitting end to the Blue Bomber's Game Boy saga, receiving a glowing recommendation in our Mega Man V review.
3DS eShop Retail Download
Outback Pet Rescue 3D (TREVA Entertainment, €29.99 / £24.99)
3DS eShop Temporary Discount
Secrets of the Titanic (Avanquest, €4.99 / £4.99 until 11th September, normally €10.99 / £9.99)
That's everything for this week, European gamers. Let us know what you're planning to download in the poll and comments below.

6,50 € for a game I already have on 3DS?
Sorry, it has nothing new to buy it again
SteamWorld Dig should be either cross-buy or reeeaaally cheap. I'm not going to pay that price for the same game again.
Anyway, it's MK8 DLC for me Really appreciate the new Zen Pinball tables too, although I probably won't buy them in the near future.
Of course everyone will be "purchasing" the Mario Kart 8 DLC first. Afterwards, I might bite a new Zen Pinball 2 table.
Mega Man V for me. Really enjoying the GB games so far.
If I had a Wii U, of course I'd get the MK8 DLC as well.
SteamWorld Dig for me but its not much of a saving for owning the 3DS version.
Will also think about downloading the GB Mega Man games.
@Koapa
I agree. It should be 5€ at most for those who have it on 3DS.
Anyway, MK8 DLC for me!
I used to look forward to eshop updates but been nothing worth getting for months now!
MK8 DLC for me this week. Just wish they had put in proper battle arenas, such a wasted opportunity for an update. Heck, I would've been willing to wait longer for this update!
MK8 DLC & a bit surprised SW Dig Wii U for 3DS owners. May still DL it as software buys bn quiet this summer anyway. This gen is and will have far fewer retail games than last
I really like SteamWorld Dig but £4.99 to play it again on Wii U when I can just flip out my 3DS feels a bit much, anyway will probably just be Mario Kart 8 Mercedes-Benz GLA, the 300 SL Roadster and Silver Arrow DLC for me this week.
Its obvious that peoples first choice is the free MK 8 DLC.
However i wonder why Nintendo never announces new DLC tracks or something? Maybe they wait long time so they can't be caught for milking.
I might get Steamworld dig and more Zen Pinball tables too.
What! No free Disney Infinity download in Europe. I was hoping to upgrade to wiiu version before 2.0.
@Tsurii897
They thought they are together? LOL. It says Mercedes DLC, the other one is an update. How could they mixed it?
I'll be getting the Mario Kart 8 DLC and Mario Golf Advance Tour but the former first because it comes out first. The only issue I have with Advance Tour being Wii U VC is there won't be the crosstalk stuff with Toadstool Tour (you could connect them using the GCN to GBA link cable).
@BensonUii Simple, if the Mercedes DLC was on disc content then the update could have unlocked it. Another approach could have been something like the update causing all online modes to go "You do not have the necessary DLC to play this mode" unless you have downloaded the Mercedes DLC. The latter concept is something very familiar to FPS games to prevent people from playing DLC game playlists without the DLC.
Oh, and inb4 any "shovel knight" comments; the European region localisation team are in the "Final Testing" phrase now.
I really like SteamWorld Dig but £4.99 to play it again on Wii U when I can just flip out my 3DS feels a bit much,
I would imagine the clearer graphics and wider screen really helps the game.
Noooo MK8 DLC... This means that i'll have to race against CLKs during online gameplay, isn't it?
@DrSlump You don't have to use the Mercedes if you don't want to, but you can't stop other people from doing it. That's free will 101. Expect to see a lot of Mercedes on the online races. I'm going with Wario in the 300SL roadster...
Steamworld Dig for me (again) as i dont care about the additional 6,50
Also Mario Golf, as it is pretty much THE go-to Mario Golf game for me and one of my most favourite games in general.
MegaMan is a no brainer.
And of course the MK8 DLC because, why not
MK8 DLC for me. I hope there's going to be track and racer DLC
@Splatom Me too, but I think we'll still get some Amiibo related update this autumn, though I'm not sure what will the Amiibo figurines do in this game exactly.
Aw, come on. Nintendo and CAPCOM are sitting on a veritable treasure trove of games they could be VCing, and they release one in a week, if anything.
It's like they don't WANT our money!
Don't forget about the special Pokeball pattern Vivilion!
Mario Golf: Advance Tour?! I love that game! I used to play it all the time.
I bet that the DLC will come with Amibo
Like many Mario Kart purists, I was initially horrified at the news that the hideous Mercedes GL SUV would be cluttering up our favourite MK tracks, but having since seen that the DLC also includes one of my favourite cars of all time (the utterly gorgeous 300SL Roadster), I'm more than happy!
The inclusion of the German car makers formula racing Silver Arrow is another fabulous addition for petrolheads like myself. Indeed, for me, the 1930-1960's era brought us some of the most beautifiul cars (and bikes!) ever to grace the earth.
Speaking of bikes... perhaps this is going too far, but I'd kinda like to see a properly old skool MV Agusta cafe racer and maybe a 1930's Harley flathead DLC package later...?!?
Do real life car fans hate bad real life cars appearing in videogames, regardless of how they actually play in the game?
@Ventilator It takes a long time to make a Mario Kart track.
On the plus side, there are files for CupIconDLC00 to CupIconDLC03 on the game disc, so it looks like we'll get a fairly substantial amount of new tracks (16, if we're getting 4 per cup).
Please note that there isn't actually any data, just (possibly) placeholder art and titles for the cup. This isn't on-disc DLC that has been held back from release. The art is pictures of Boo, Shine Sprite, Blue Shell and Yoshi Egg.
I for one am excited to play a MK game with 48 tracks!
Probably nothing for me again this week, that's 2 weeks in a row now. I already have steamworld on 3ds and the price isnt cheap enough to double dip, not particularly interested in the mario kart dlc either
@C-Olimar : 48 tracks would be nice. I think some MK game already had that.
They need to make some new online Battle Arenas too which requires less work than a new track, but they can't just make one track. There will most likely be 2-4 tracks at once.
I think they should focus more on tracks than cars.
@Ventilator MK has only had up to 16..
@DreamyViridi Good to hear as I've had the funds on my account for months now.
Steamworld Dig and MK8 for me.
Side note: Enough with the Game Boy games! Bring us SNES and N64!
If I complete Golden Sun before Thursday I need to download Fire Emblem while it's on offer. Then I should really buy all the Ubisoft games on promotion because they'll double in price soon. Might get Steamworld Dig if I complete Fire Emblem before Shovel Knight is released. So many games, so little time.
I am glad the only thing available this week was the free DLC for Mario Kart 8. Just spent far too much buying a PS4 and games. But I still have money for Hyrule Warriors. Nintendo comes first.
Steamworld Dig looks like a great game but ONCE again a Nintendo platform release SHAFTS the community as its crossbuy PS4 & Vita on Sonys machines.
I find it a bit odd that these "Australian" games never seem to be released in Australia (e.g. Outback Pet Rescue 3D, My Australian Farm etc.). I know they're shovelware, but still...
@stanleecroup nothing at all? Expand your horizons a bit.
"emphasizes its efforts to incorporate RPG aspects into the basic gameplay, which is an area that some fans of these portable sports games particularly love"
And some particularly hate. When I buy a golf game I want to play Golf dagnabbit
I'll pass
@sillygostly I know right! Its got our name in it and we can't even have it!...not that I really want it lol
The Mercs for me this week cos they're free!
Mega Man 2 Melody was added to the website. I still don't get what people got against the DLC product placement is a thing you know
Mario Golf Advance Tour is amazing! If you haven't tried it yet, give it a shot. I put dozens of hours into this game before World Tour came out. I assume you won't be able to link the VC version to the Gamecube with Toadstool Tour to fully unlock all the characters. I wonder if they will include them all in this version?
Aww, I was hoping for some Demon King Box or fresh Indie flesh - oh well, Steamworld Dig and MK8 DLC for me then.
I've already got 3DS Steamworld Dig,...it's excellent, but I'll hold out for a bit of a discount on the Wii U version as it's a bit of a high price to double dip at.
The Zen Pinball DLC....I'll be waiting for a bit of a discount on that too. I've got ALL the other DLC so far, but I bought it during sales.
Other than that....I'm still waiting for Game and Watch Gallery 3 on 3DS VC. Have Nintendo forgotten about it?
What, no Disney Infinity for us?
Steamworld and all the zen tables please table 1! and a mercedes for mk8 wont hurt either.
Does anyone know if there will be more Smash Bros themed discounts this week? I haven't heard whether the sales are continuing or if it was a fortnight long deal. If it's still going, I'm hoping for more veteran sales, notably Zelda, Metroid, Yoshi, F-Zero and Star Fox to get representation.
As for this week at hand, it will probably be just the MK8 DLC for me (though it's an obvious choice at this point considering it's free). Though I'm still looking forward to the system update rather than the Mercedes cars. I'll at least try all of the cars once in some local races, but I'm leaving them out in terms of online races. I'm happy with my Yoshi Bike and Sports Coupe, thanks.
SteamWorld Dig, the Mario Kart update + cars, and at least the Doctor Strange pinball table. If I still have some money left on my account after that we'll see if I get the other tables too. Good week!
Mario Kart DLC, and maybe SteamWorld Dig.
@1BrightGamer Metroid already had representation, they were selling NES Metroid for half price last week. Nothing's been done with the other games you mentioned so far though. I think there's still a bit more time to go on the current deals first (Fire Emblem, Kirby and a couple of others).
I might be in the minority but the Zen pinball tables are a day 1 purchase for me!
MK8 DLC is a no-brainer! May buy Steam World Dig & Mario Golf: Advance Tour as well.
Cool that the MK8 DLC and update are coming.
Shame that Steamworld Dig is that expensive even with the discount for us who own it already on 3DS.
@Grumblevolcano : Games like Splinter Cell Blacklist (Wii U), Unreal Tournament etc.. allows you to play any online map without paying for it.
For obvious reasons you can't host maps you don't have, but you can join in on maps you didn't pay for.
Lotsa stuff this week. Dig, MK DLC and of course I'll get al the new Zen tables. Glad they keep supporting the game.
@Ventilator but blacklist on the Wii u doesn't have any dlc so how can there be maps others have that you don't??
SteeamWorld Dig: from Cross Play to Cross Pay!
I dont' have Mario Kart 8, but I'd like to download these lovely Mercedes so I'll be able to drive them in Hyrule Warriors and Zelda U: that would be great!!!
@ULTRA-64 : Wii U got all DLC that 360 and PS3 got in this game.
Wow, one more layer of dust on my 3DS this week...
@Ventilator sorry dude, your right! I was a bit pissed about the lack of local cop op in the game so I must have missed a bit of news on that. Embarrassing thing is I own the game, just never put it in the drive to find out as my back log is huge!
@ULTRA-64 @Ventilator What I really don't get is that Splinter Cell Blacklist and Assassin's Creed Black Flag came out only 2 months apart and yet the latter didn't get DLC for Wii U whereas the former did. Only thing I could think of is the Splinter Cell DLC maybe being "on disc DLC".
@ULTRA-64 : No problem. Online co-op on Wii U is awesome. I played Bacllist 10's of hours online and unlocked everything. In total i played nearly 100 hours. Blacklist was so fun that i bought it again on Xbox 360 to play it all again online and offline. I prefer Wii U version because of touch pad usage.
@Grumblevolcano : Blacklist is the only UBI game getting all DLC. I think the DLC was already on disc, and was unlocked by key or keys. The second DLC is mostly weapons. Both is on eShop. Its strange that they skipped DLC on AC 4, while AC 3 on Wii U have some DLC.
Since Blacklist sold so bad on all consoles, it never got any future DLC Personally, its the Splinter Cell i liked most ever.
I own 39 Retail games on Wii U, but to date Blacklist is the most played.
@Grumblevolcano @Ventilator on disc dlc is a possibility but it's hard to know why the dlc never came for black flag. It was an unexpected treat that game, assassin's creed games bore me normally but I'd broken my thumb so a slow paced collectathon was perfect.....and of course pirates!! =)
I'm pretty sure it sold way more than blacklist aswell so there should have been dlc but these games take years to make and some decisions are made very early/late in development so it could have been decided way before sales figures came out.
My big gripe is that offline co-op was never patched , I can live without extra stuff so long as the basic game is complete, which this wasn't!
Wow!
The 3DS has nothing good recently. It's very disappointing.
@ULTRA-64 : On disk DLC is a very bad thing. It means it is already in the game, but you have to pay to unlock it.
I own both AC on Wii U, but haven't played them yet.
Co-op was most likely not patched due to overall poor sales. Thats why there is no new DLC either. Its a very underrated game, and its very good for people who don't like Stealth too. You can play the levels how you want. Sadly gameplay will be changed again in the next one due to bad sales, which means i may not like the next. Normally i wouldn't buy it, but i bought all big title UBI games for Wii U. 10 of them. Blacklist was 10 times better than expected.
@faint hi. I do have expansive horizons but I am open to suggestions. So what do you suggest I look at and maybe you can rekindle my interest in eshop?
@Ventilator I agree fully about the on disc dlc, it's ethically unsound to charge more for what's already there. At the risk of sounding like I'm defending it, it's pretty much a norm outside of Nintendo now and the alternative option is to pay more as, Let's face it, they want that dollar somehow! The games industry in general is struggling and they are trying to squeeze everything out of each product as they lose cash on most games, ubisoft in particular have succumbed to some really 'business minded' decisions that are very insulting to the educated gamers out there. I used to buy all their games new to show support, now I'm not bothered so much about helping them as they havnt shown propper respect to their consumers!
@stanleecroup might I suggest castlestorm, nes remix and the highly rated child of light as starting points. For more particular tastes, stick it to the man, master reboot and of course the virtual console options. Just some of my favorites and highly rated games, hope you like some of them ?
@Ventilator @ULTRA-64 Thanks for your info on the Blacklist situation, although I owned it on Xbox 360. I decided to get the Wii U version with the cheap sale to vary my Wii U library as well as the larger chance of finding people to play with in co-op (the 360 version is completely dead thanks to Watch Dogs).
@ULTRA-64: The cost to make games today is more than ever, while game prices is same old.
Day 1 DLC is their sneaky way to increase the price of the game. Its not always greed, because the game alone might not always cover the development costs. They also need money for their next game.
Third parties is insulting when they claim Wii U can't have mature games, and even more insulting when Call of Duty is considered a mature game which its far from. Pre-teens and teens is 80% of the COD gamers.
@Grumblevolcano : No problem. Online games on Wii U is mostly fully alive with loads of people on each game. Mass Effect 3, NFS Most Wanted, 007 Legends etc. is still fully alive. As for Blacklist its random now due to 2 player coop. I'm sure people is still nagging for coop players on Miiverse, so it shouldn't be an issue. Xbox 360 don't have anything like Miiverse, so its harder to find people.
@stanleecroup well what do you have 3ds/wiiu and what region are you in. i know this is a release update but aus doesn't get everything the uk gets nor does mexico get everything the us gets.
@faint hi again. I live in england and use the 3ds.
@Ventilator mature games on Nintendo console's is a big issue for me, I'm 30 and love classic Nintendo stuff but I need at Least one mature game on the go to at a time to keep sane with all the bright colours. Cod etc are boring but also I love zombie games so I'm always looking/struggling for good mature games and after the excellent deus ex and zombie u I'm finding mass effect 3 a bit dull. I'm hoping blacklist is a bit better.
@ULTRA-64 : Nintendo says "mature" games is important, so we will see more Wii U exclusive games that we don't know of yet.
Steamworld Dig.. does it have anything new from the 3ds version? Don't see myself buying it again if there's nothing new to it. Even as good as it was. Anyway if not ill grab the mario golf game, love me some rpg mixed in my sport games. Loved Mario Tennis on GBC.
