Re: Analyst Is Certain Nintendo Will Win Its Lawsuit Against Palworld Developer

@sanderev It does depend somewhat on the country. In some countries such patents are harder to go through. But one of the things that set Japan back in the realm of software was its stricter IP protections. And also its far stricter crackdowns on corporate crime and malfeasance. So I don’t really like this. It’s the kind of behavior that stifled startups in Japan

Re: AI Generator Scraped YouTube Videos Without Permission, Including Nintendo's

@Qwiff Fair use covers copying, not extracting information. The learning that goes on is more akin to extracting information. To show that it is copying will be challenging battle but maybe not impossible. I don’t know how this will turn out. But copyright laws weren’t designed with this technology in mind cause it didn’t pose a threat until very recently so was not on the radar of the legal system

It’s surprising how many people on here think they understand the technology but have no clue.

Re: AI Generator Scraped YouTube Videos Without Permission, Including Nintendo's

@nessisonett My guess is copyright laws do not provide protection against the practice of training, even in countries where they are more strict. It is not "copying", at least not in a sense that would be covered by current laws, it is learning patterns. There would be all other sorts of ramifications if it was considered copying. For example, whether human learning is considered violating copyrights. Because human learning is a very similar process.

If it produces material that violates copyrights though that would be covered. Just like for humans. AI is likely to bring about massive changes to the legal system. It'll be interesting to see how it changes things.

Re: Nintendo Shows More Positive Signs Of Growth With Boost In Employee Count

@PikaPhantom Japanese people do not stand for a lot of the antisocial behavior that is accepted in say the US. I don’t think there is a law that says the CEO must take a pay-cut but i think they do it out of a feeling of responsibility for the workers and the company. That said, I think in some ways Japan has too many protections for workers and this has hurt it. Like it is really hard to fire someone.

Re: Talking Point: 'Remake' Vs. 'Remaster' - What's Your Definition?

roboshort

Remake means the game was completely remade with new code/engine

Remaster means it was touched up but the core engine and code are the same

Also, I don’t think FF7 Remake is really a remake since it’s a different game. More like a reimagining

Games like Mario Kart 8DX are tough though. Not really a remake and not a remaster or port. More like am enhanced version

Re: Call Of Duty Exec Is Appointed As Blizzard's New President

roboshort

@GOmar Most entrepreneurs tend to be quite creative so there are creative people that want to be executives. In fact, Iwata was a developer. The thing is you need a good COO or some other person to handle the day-to-day stuff and someone to tell the person why their idea sucks.

In Japan it is not uncommon to put "creators" (engineers or artists) in executive positions. That's a bit different from the US where boards will tend to try and replace creative execs with "business-people".

The problem with putting people like her in the lead position is they don't have a vision for the product. While it's okay for companies that can get by on repeating processes like shipping companies or food manufacturers to not have much of a vision, companies that hinge on creativity eventually lose their competitive edge without one.

Re: Call Of Duty Exec Is Appointed As Blizzard's New President

roboshort

@xDeckardx Personally I think game companies should more actively put developers at the top of companies not “businesspeople”. I don’t like that Nintendo has Furukawa at the top either, though Nintendo has more developers in executive positions

I hope this lady cleans up the company though

Re: Square Enix To Slim Down Its Gaming Lineup To Ensure Higher Quality

roboshort

@somnambulance They probably look at how Capcom turned things around and became one of the top game developers again and realized they need to follow suit and trim the fat. I do hope Square still puts out small-budget titles, but they have too many projects going on and quite a few bad flops which is all pretty distracting and makes it hard to put out quality.

Re: Unity To Axe 25% Of Its Workforce As Part Of "Company Reset"

roboshort

@garfreek It's because they are having trouble making money. Unity has been way in the red for a long time and losing tons of money. They have way too many projects going on simultaneously that probably will never result in them making money.

Unreal is also a huge money pit for Epic. Epic is fortunate to have Fortnite though. Unity doesn't have something like that.

Re: Unity Reveals New Pricing Model For Runtime Fee Policy

roboshort

@RupeeClock It is not an easy thing to move to another engine. If you are midway through a project, it could cause huge setbacks or even project failure to change. Plus, if you have invested a lot of time into learning that engine, it is also not so easy an easy decision to make. Likely, the main things it will effect are decisions about what engine to choose for a new project and what engine to learn in school.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The Nintendo Direct, Then?

roboshort

Was the new Shinchan game not announced in the West?

I felt it was solid. I'd give it a B or a 7/10. There was a lot of interesting software though no real big ones other than Atlus's new game and Shinchan. You can tell that 2024 is the final year for the Switch since all new first party game announcements were either DLC like Splatoon, Mario Kart or ports like Another Code, Donkey Kong and Paper Mario

Re: Video: The N64 Kart Racer That Deserves To Be On Switch

roboshort

@RareFan @Giancarlothomaz A sequel would be possible because Nintendo owns the copyright to the game and the copyright to Diddy Kong but they’d have to replace the characters they don’t own the copyright for. But a sequel doesn’t make sense cause Nintendo already makes Mario Kart unless Retro or Next Level makes the sequel

Re: Metroid Dread Wasn't A "Chaotic" Project, Working With Nintendo Was "Game Changing", Says Dev

roboshort

@EriXz It’s possible but I have doubts because of the end product. In my experience a chaotic environment results in a chaotic product like Cyberpunk or Balan not in something well designed. Usually the planning is bad, the goals constantly change or the product director wants to do too many things. I just don’t see that in Dread. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the environment was stressful because of long hours or highly ambitious gosls and negativity
