@Grim yeah. But it’s bound to be packed. Given that Universal Studios is not too far from it you can check that out too. But Kyoto is a must see anyway. I recommend renting bicycles to get around if you go there.
@Daniel36 If you are getting started with game design, there’s no need to start with Unreal. In fact it’s probably overkill because it’s got a steep learning curve and there’s so much you have to worry about besides game design.
@sanderev It does depend somewhat on the country. In some countries such patents are harder to go through. But one of the things that set Japan back in the realm of software was its stricter IP protections. And also its far stricter crackdowns on corporate crime and malfeasance. So I don’t really like this. It’s the kind of behavior that stifled startups in Japan
@Neph They are not owned by Nintendo but they have an exclusive agreement with them and Nintendo publishes the titles and has partial ownership over their IPs so I don’t think they’re games would be shown
@Qwiff Fair use covers copying, not extracting information. The learning that goes on is more akin to extracting information. To show that it is copying will be challenging battle but maybe not impossible. I don’t know how this will turn out. But copyright laws weren’t designed with this technology in mind cause it didn’t pose a threat until very recently so was not on the radar of the legal system
It’s surprising how many people on here think they understand the technology but have no clue.
@link3710 I am in the field of AI (primarily machine learning) and sorry to be a bit critical but your understanding is a bit too simplistic and possibly your understanding of what human learning is doing is perhaps a bit too mystical. The systems are learning, at least by any sort of scientific definition of what learning is.
@nessisonett My guess is copyright laws do not provide protection against the practice of training, even in countries where they are more strict. It is not "copying", at least not in a sense that would be covered by current laws, it is learning patterns. There would be all other sorts of ramifications if it was considered copying. For example, whether human learning is considered violating copyrights. Because human learning is a very similar process.
If it produces material that violates copyrights though that would be covered. Just like for humans. AI is likely to bring about massive changes to the legal system. It'll be interesting to see how it changes things.
@fabiop The Wii had a crap controller? Honestly nunchuck combo was probably my favorite controller up to now. Especially after motion plus. Just wish the motion controls had been better at the time.
@PikaPhantom Japanese people do not stand for a lot of the antisocial behavior that is accepted in say the US. I don’t think there is a law that says the CEO must take a pay-cut but i think they do it out of a feeling of responsibility for the workers and the company. That said, I think in some ways Japan has too many protections for workers and this has hurt it. Like it is really hard to fire someone.
@Axecon Why ? It’s an RPG. Having it be at 60fps doesn’t have that much of a benefit. Trying to simply satisfy framerate snobs is not that a good business decision
@bighirofix Given that Namco publishes many of FromSoftware’s games I don’t know if Kadokawa will care if Acquire makes a game for Square. Though I wonder why Kadokawa bought them.
@Goat_FromBOTW You can't be equal to your employees. Your employees will take advantage of you if you do, even if it is not really intentional on their part. And it will probably stunt their growth as well as yours.
@GOmar Most entrepreneurs tend to be quite creative so there are creative people that want to be executives. In fact, Iwata was a developer. The thing is you need a good COO or some other person to handle the day-to-day stuff and someone to tell the person why their idea sucks.
In Japan it is not uncommon to put "creators" (engineers or artists) in executive positions. That's a bit different from the US where boards will tend to try and replace creative execs with "business-people".
The problem with putting people like her in the lead position is they don't have a vision for the product. While it's okay for companies that can get by on repeating processes like shipping companies or food manufacturers to not have much of a vision, companies that hinge on creativity eventually lose their competitive edge without one.
@HammerGalladeBro Thanks for the detailed answer. I meant it mostly as a rhetorical question. I really hope Retro makes a comeback though. Releasing just a remaster of Metroid Prime and DKTF Deluxe doesn't really cut it. Though I think they also helped out with some other projects.
@xDeckardx Personally I think game companies should more actively put developers at the top of companies not “businesspeople”. I don’t like that Nintendo has Furukawa at the top either, though Nintendo has more developers in executive positions
It’s been 10 years since Retro last released a new game. How many games have Monolithsoft, Next Level, Intelligent Systems and so on released in the same timeframe.
@somnambulance They probably look at how Capcom turned things around and became one of the top game developers again and realized they need to follow suit and trim the fat. I do hope Square still puts out small-budget titles, but they have too many projects going on and quite a few bad flops which is all pretty distracting and makes it hard to put out quality.
@garfreek It's because they are having trouble making money. Unity has been way in the red for a long time and losing tons of money. They have way too many projects going on simultaneously that probably will never result in them making money.
Unreal is also a huge money pit for Epic. Epic is fortunate to have Fortnite though. Unity doesn't have something like that.
Nintendo is one of the most popular companies to work for in Japan. Definitely not for people who want to take it easy or have good work-life balance as people today would say
@GoshJosh The game has a 76 on Metacritic so an 8 is pretty reasonable. Last I checked NintendoLife’s average score was below average for review sites which would mean they aren’t mire lenient than most sites
@johnvboy When did Sony have a monopoly on the core video gaming space? The only time they came close was in the PS1 and PS2 eras. But that is almost 20 years ago.
@Stamina_Wheel Considering one of the top executives of Platinum is from Nintendo, I imagine Nintendo is aiming to cultivate a long-term relationship with them. Hard to speculate beyond that.
@RupeeClock It is not an easy thing to move to another engine. If you are midway through a project, it could cause huge setbacks or even project failure to change. Plus, if you have invested a lot of time into learning that engine, it is also not so easy an easy decision to make. Likely, the main things it will effect are decisions about what engine to choose for a new project and what engine to learn in school.
@Joker1234 Peach is the only new game probably because Nintendo wants to have a strong lineup for the new system's first year and not repeat the mistakes of the WiiU. I don't mind the remasters and remakes though cause I never played those games.
@OorWullie I don't think so. I'd guess it was made by NST or 1up Studio or a small team inside the EAD's 3d Mario development team. Or a collaboration between them.
@kalosn They announced games for later in 2024 so my guess is 2024 will be mostly be DLC, ports, and remakes and Switch 2 will release at the end of the year. If that's the case, I hope to see Nintendo put out more remasters of some of their more minor titles.
@locky-mavo I avoided the leaks. And I am glad I did. Because it instead of being a disappointment, I was pleased. While I would have preferred NST make a new Mario vs Donkey Kong, it looks like love went into making the remake
Was the new Shinchan game not announced in the West?
I felt it was solid. I'd give it a B or a 7/10. There was a lot of interesting software though no real big ones other than Atlus's new game and Shinchan. You can tell that 2024 is the final year for the Switch since all new first party game announcements were either DLC like Splatoon, Mario Kart or ports like Another Code, Donkey Kong and Paper Mario
@Cashews I saw his film. I hope you have a great time with it. The new film from Studio Ponoc, which is basically Ghibli also, also looks great. Comes out in December in Japan
@Thomystic Temps and contractors are not employees so it wouldn’t make sense to include them. I imagine the percentage is much lower than at NOA, though. NOA has quite a bit if autonomy so is run differently
@antisumo Breath of the Wild released at the same time on the WiiU as the Switch and plus the Switch version had better performance and better image quality. Colloquially when people say port they refer to a release that came significantly later. And People only care about a port being much enhanced or much cheaper if it comes out far later
@Stamina_Wheel Which Nintendo games are you referring to that were bare minimum ports and priced at $50? Like Mario 3d All Stars may have been bare minimum but three games were included
@RareFan @Giancarlothomaz A sequel would be possible because Nintendo owns the copyright to the game and the copyright to Diddy Kong but they’d have to replace the characters they don’t own the copyright for. But a sequel doesn’t make sense cause Nintendo already makes Mario Kart unless Retro or Next Level makes the sequel
@EriXz It’s possible but I have doubts because of the end product. In my experience a chaotic environment results in a chaotic product like Cyberpunk or Balan not in something well designed. Usually the planning is bad, the goals constantly change or the product director wants to do too many things. I just don’t see that in Dread. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the environment was stressful because of long hours or highly ambitious gosls and negativity

Re: Talking Point: 'Remake' Vs. 'Remaster' - What's Your Definition?
Remake means the game was completely remade with new code/engine
Remaster means it was touched up but the core engine and code are the same
Also, I don’t think FF7 Remake is really a remake since it’s a different game. More like a reimagining
Games like Mario Kart 8DX are tough though. Not really a remake and not a remaster or port. More like am enhanced version
