@Cashews They seem really hard to get a hold of which would mean demand is far outpacing supply and that they are not being manufactured sufficiently. I don't know too much about it cause I haven't been following it, but I'd be inclined to believe it is an abject failure if they are not selling, not if they are out of stock.
@hashkey It is classified as American/Japanese, though even if you wouldn’t classify it as that. Probably because it was financed and produced by both Nintendo and Illumination. It’s also not like such CG family movies aren’t made in Japan. Just the budgets are much smaller
@hashkey The movie is half-Japanese, Nintendo was involved with production after all. But yeah it can be hard to predict performance. Like RRR is still showing in theaters in Japan, which probably no one would have thought
@LeonSKennedy It’s possibly cause it launched at the beginning of Golden Week so people don’t feel the need to rush out and see it anytime during the week. The audience reception looks good in Japan so I expect it to hit 100 million. You also have to remember while Japan has a large population it has a high percentage of elderly people who aren’t interested in Mario.
@burgerkingsauce How does “every creative work ever made” include them? Most engineering work’s done include them. A lot of patents don’t include all the names involved in the invention. Honestly though, I like credits and think they should be included since it is a tradition. It does seem unappreciative not to include their names.
You shouldn’t criticize a Mario movie based on not having enough story. it would deserve more criticism if it had much of a story.
But Mario is about innovation of “fun” and the movie should have been too. But seems it failed in that and settled for the standard gags you see in Illumination movies, fan service and references…. Illumination is not the go to place for innovation.
@Switch_Pro The amount of IP doesn’t matter. Disney has gone through lulls before but I think this version of Disney is the worst. They’ve lost most of their artistry and become an incredibly cynical company. That’s okay if you are making sugar water but in more creative industries that’ll kill you.
@Chocobo_Shepherd I don't see any problem with fictionalization. But sometimes I feel the purpose of the fictionalization is only to make the film more pleasing to the crowd rather than because of some artistic driven choice. The ending sequence of Argo is an example of that.
I haven't seen this film but it seems like it is trying to walk a tightrope of remaining "based on a true story" while adding a bit too much dramatization and not quite succeeding.. it may have been better to just go a little bit more into the fictionalization and be "inspired by a true story"
@ZeldaNX Makes sense. I thought the bosses could use more character. I liked how the dungeons were mechanical beasts though and how they connected to finishing the game, but the dungeons themselves weren’t quite as organic as in previous Zeldas.
@DiggleDog TOTK will not be a more of the same affair though. The mechanics they showcased yesterday are revolutionary. Far more innovative than anything we’ve seen from any other open world title since BOTW. I can’t imagine how long it must have taken to realize the weapons mechanic
And they haven’t really shown us anything besides those mechanics so we don’t know what else the game has to offer
@AstroTheGamosian The Japanese have instituted a number of immigration policies and the number of immigrants had grown greatly until covid. That number will start to grow again. You can’t expect a country that historically has extremely conservative immigration policies to all of a sudden liberalize them. It’s not like the US that has historically exploited illegal immigrants and profited off of importing highly skilled immigrants.
@MythTgr It’s a remake of GBA game for a niche series . I don’t think they could allocate a large marketing budget for it. If the game makes a profit, it will have sold well. Raw sales numbers are not that telling
Eternal Darkness is a first party game, isn’t it? I never played a GameCube though so I am up for anything, but Thousand Year Door and FZero have always interested me.
I really liked this title. And liked the level building. I wish NST would develop more titles. though I think they developed Bowser’s Fury, I wish they made games like 1080 and Waverace again
@HugoGED I agree that it has borrowed a lot from the WiiU but writing off BOTW as a WiiU port is a little disingenuous and Mario kart 8DX offers so much more than 8 at this point it shouldn’t be written off either. Plus Switch got the first 3D Kirby, Astral Chain, Pokemon Snap, Bayonetta 3, and many more.. . But if you look at games financed by Nintendo you’ll see the Switch is extremely competitive in terms of 1st party titles even if you remove the straight ports.
I think the Wii has one of the best so should be rated higher. It had quite a few inventive first party IP outside the the mainstays like Captain Rainbow, Last Story etc
@Ade117 Retro has done a ton of hiring for Metroid Prime 4 so is probably better off now. Also, I can't imagine Armature is a very attractive destination now. Seems like that company has only produced mediocre games and ports.
Here in Japan, they announced a game called Nastumon (Summer Story, I believe) (なつもん! 20世紀の夏休み) from Spike Chunsoft that looked like good relaxing fun. Was that not announced for out there?
@Hoshiko I am with you. I thought it was good but the only first party announcement this time was Metroid Prime Remastered, a port of an old game. Everything else like Zelda, Pikmin, Bayonetta Origins, Kirby had already been announced It seems like they are winding down and prepping for the next system
@Ralizah Is Koei Tecmo involved with the game? So far as I can tell Intelligent Systems is the only developer. They needed help with Three Houses cause they didn’t have much experience with 3d at that point.
@Dragonite89 Hemsworth is a boring actor too. He’s a b action movie actor at best. At least Cavill has on screen presence. I suppose that counts for something.
@Belatarr Is the exposition/dialogue as bad as God of War Ragnarok? That game had dreadful dialogue. I don’t know if I can play this if it is that bad. I like exposition when done well, but in your face exposition will really wear on me.
@MrA-Game Maybe the reviewers honestly thought it was 9/10 and had good reasons for doing so You can’t expect everyone to have the same opinion as you. And I don’t think you should worry if a couple sites gave it that score. if every site had given it a high score, I might be able to empathize with your grievances, but most sites didn’t.
@Samalik @Kilroy Nintendo is a joint holder of the copyrights for Bayonetta 2, 3, and this game as well with Sega. That means that in regard to the individual games, the Nintendo has ownership, and thus "owns" the IP to those games.
Given that Nintendo financed the games, they most likely entered into an agreement with Sega gives them most of the rights over the games. And probably entered into other agreements with Sega in regard to the franchise. They've invested too much into the franchise not to. That's why I said it's "essentially" Nintendo's franchise. Unless Nintendo transfers ownership or Nintendo changes internal practices, you aren't seeing any 2, 3, or this game on non-Nintendo platforms.
@Kilroy No. Nintendo is publishing it. And Sega doesn’t really have anything to do with Bayonetta anymore so far as I can tell. Nintendo finances the series so it is basically a Nintendo franchise now
@SalvorHardin Yeah. I can’t believe God Of War is rated so high. It has great production but the sheer degree of bad exposition in the game should be disqualifying.
@kingbk RPG and adventure are not mutually exclusive because a lot of RPGs are adventure games. And, as an adventure game, I'd say Xenoblade is better. Elden Ring like BOTW is more of an exploration game than an adventure game.
@Goofonzo They gave Scarlett and Violet a 7 though. Just seemed to me like they had been scoring harsher of late. I think that it does ruin their credibility a little when games like Mario Strikers and 3 Hopes get 9s. I imagine they are fine games, but “Amazing” seems like a bit of a stretch. They don’t hand out many 10s so not sure what you are talking about there
@jerrycoeurl I get the feeling Nintendo Life is scoring harsher recently and think that’s a good thing. 5/10 is a supposed to be an average score. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to me that someone might think this is average. Like 50% of games technically should score below average. For some reason average has come to mean bad in Anglo societies.
@Orpheus79V It's a translation from Japanese so you can't put too much stock in the language. Here they use the term 映像 (eizou) rather than 動画 (douga), which makes it pretty ambiguous as to what it refers to. If it used, douga, I would expect it to be more short videos.
@Tasuki So when is Starfield arriving on PS5? Microsoft obviously does care which platforms its first party titles are available on. Microsoft purchased Activision, Bethesda, Obsidian etc so they can take control of the Western RPG and shooter markets. I think that's pretty obvious. They may decide to allow some of their titles on Playstation, like they have with Minecraft, but that's not a given.... And Sony will continue to dominate in terms of cinematic games, I imagine. I am not a Playstation fanboy by any means.
@Crono1973 I think our points are related. Game Freak knows people will buy the games no matter what so they don’t invest in the human resources that should be necessary for a game of the scale of Scarlet and Violet. It is not just a matter of the graphics looking behind the times also. I do imagine it is also demotivating for developers at Game Freak to release a game with a plethora of technical issues. They’ll probably pay for the lack of investment now in the long run.
@JudaiMasters I think it’s a human resources issue. Game Freak had their staff split between Arceus and this game and they have way fewer employees than Monolithsoft. They should have far more capital so that’s kinda crazy. But they are also not under Nintendo’s umbrella
@RR529 I found Fire Emblem Warriors to be more interesting in terms of strategy than action. I haven’t played any of the other games so don’t know about them. But I also like junk food in moderation so I don’t think it’s slight against them to call them that.
@Anachronism I'd say the same for Platinum. Out of Platinum's partners, Sega, Square, Activision, Microsoft, Nintendo, etc, Nintendo has easily been their best partner. They may have had their biggest game with Square, but Babylon's Fall was an absolute mess.
Given that the new Vice President of Platinum is a higher-up from Nintendo I think it is highly likely they'll continue working with Nintendo. That kind of personnel movement is far less common in Japan.
She doesn't seem to realize that Platinum has to budget their money and that she is not worth what she thinks she is worth. Spending more than $15000 from a game with a budget on the lower end for AAA on a voice actor for 2 workdays sounds like it would be fiscally irresponsible unless the voice actor is a big name and able to bring in revenue.
