Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Mario Strikers: Battle League

roboshort

@the_beaver It has been a successful formula. I can understand why you would want it to have everything from the start, but that makes it hard to keep the game active. A periodic impulse of new content/modes is more likely to keep intrigue

Also, there is an overemphasis on content these days which makes a lot of games feel bloated. I’d much prefer the game be tightly engineered.

Re: Sonic Frontiers Gameplay Showcases A Pretty, But Sparse Open World

roboshort

@UltimateOtaku91 BOTW was an exploration game. Calling it sparse is kind of a silly criticism and there are always new things to discover. If you were just trying to get from point a to point b, you weren't getting the most out of the game. Sonic is not an exploration game. So that makes the game looks disjointed to me right now.

Re: NoA President Responds To Alleged Working Conditions At Nintendo, Finds Reports "Troubling"

roboshort

@Ryu_Niiyama I am also a little confused by people getting up in arms about contractors being treated differently from employees when contractors are not employees and by definition a different class of worker.

Companies need to be very careful not to treat contractors as employees or they could get sued by the contractor for misclassifying them, which could have serious consequences.

Re: Japanese Charts: Nintendo Switch Sports Dominates As Kirby Holds Strong

roboshort

@AndyC_MK111 I think they did not phone it in, they just didn’t allocate enough resources to develop it. It probably had less than a two year development period. I think it kinda sucks cause Sports started out as an incredibly innovative series and this one is extremely uninnovative.

I imagine they also weren’t sure about the series since it sold so poorly on the WiiU. So they decided to test whether to continue with it by putting out a budget title.

Re: Suda51 Was "A Little Surprised" By The Praise For Killer7

roboshort

@Abeedo It's just too expensive to develop AAA games these days. It's basically the same conundrum that Hollywood is in. You cannot be innovative because the risk of failure is too great. For risky projects, you want to spend much less money.

I think most innovative titles by big publishers in the past 10 years or so have been published by Nintendo. And even most of those were not "truly original".. Aside from maybe Labo and Ring Fit Adventure.
But Nintendo allocates much smaller development budgets and many of their executives are creative types.

Re: Yuji Naka Was Removed As Balan Wonderworld Director, Filed Lawsuit Against Square Enix

roboshort

@Dr_Lugae I don’t think there’s an X-factor cause Square does release putrid games from time to time. Also the original Rodea was good so Naka still can develop good games.

Square does not develop platformers though and shouldn’t have taken on the project. Also they released the game in a bad state. It’d have been better to cancel it. That’s what Nintendo would have done

Re: Video: A Look Back On The Switch's First Year Of Life

roboshort

@Hero8-Bit It wouldn’t sell if it was treated as a tablet. That’s not how it was designed and not the problem it’s aiming to solve. There are much better tablets out there. And maybe you feel that way but the system is still selling well and will be at least the third best selling game device of all time.

Re: Splatoon 3 Gets September Release And Extended New Footage

roboshort

@Ralizah Yeah. I’m sure it was but it wouldn’t have been in production til after Animal Crossing was finished. But the core members probably had a couple years to do R&D for it. We still don’t know how much new this entry will offer either. I’m pretty sure it’ll offer much more than 2 and 2 offered quite a bit more than 1 counting its DLC.

Re: Talking Point: If Breath Of The Wild 2 Launched Alongside New Switch Hardware, Would You Upgrade?

roboshort

I think it will launch with the successor. Nintendo will not make the mistake they made with the WiiU and the Gamecube, which was not launch with compelling software. Zelda is their most compelling IP and they'll have worked on this game for probably 6.5 years by the point it releases. I think they will not pull a Skyward Sword and release the next Zelda game a year before the new system comes out.

Re: Ori Developer Moon Studios Labelled "Oppressive" Workplace In New Report

roboshort

Sounds like a somewhat toxic environment but not really oppressive. I've worked in environments like that.
Unfortunately, narcissistic people are likely to end up in leadership positions so toxic environments are commonplace

As somewhat of a consulation prize, at least it helps out their CV to have worked for such an accomplished studio.

Re: There Are Already Mods For The Zelda: Ocarina Of Time PC Port

roboshort

@Darkcaptain3 I think maybe I wasn't clear enough. I meant to say that translation of the code without approval is probably a copyright violation. Also, the use of the characters in the game are almost certainly trademark violations even if they created new assets.

You raised a good point about Japanese law that I hadn't considered. My guess is this Ocarina of Time port would also be a violation of copyright and trademark law in the US, though.

Who knows what Nintendo will take action, though

Re: PlatinumGames CEO Insists 'Freedom' Would Be Important In Any Takeover Talks

roboshort

@LordPieFace Yeah Brownie Brown works more as a studio that assists Nintendo's Tokyo studio, but that was probably understood when making the deal. I think they weren't developing their own IP at the time. They were just outsourced to develop games for IP of other companies.

There are counter examples.. like Monolithsoft is doing better under Nintendo. It has also become a more attractive destination because many employees get to work on Zelda as well. Next Level also appears to be doing well, though they are not developing their own IPs.

Babylon's Fall is likely to bomb though so they could be in somewhat of a bad position after that.

Re: Nintendo President Reiterates That Switch Is "Just In The Middle Of Its Lifecycle"

roboshort

@Rayquaza2510 2 years until the next system sounds okay to me which is what’s projected. This year is stacked so should tide people over. Typically the end of the lifespan does not coincide with the release of the next iteration. Usually it takes another 2 years unless demand has plummeted like the Wii or never existed like the WiiU. I think even the 3ds lasted a couple years after the Switch came out.

Re: This Unofficial Zelda PC Port Is About '90% Complete', Say Devs

roboshort

@nessisonett Degas paintings do not have copyright protection, though. Also, “decompiling” is equivalent to translation ( covered under copyright law) which would mean even the code is being copied. I don’t know intellectual property laws that well but this definitely seems to be a clear case of being on the wrong side of it both in terms of copyright and trademark laws if they distribute the game.
