Re: Switch Versions Of Oceanhorn And forma.8 Outsell Console Rivals

ricklongo

I can't wait to see how Yooka-Laylee on Switch compares to other versions' sales (and A Hat in Time too, if that ever comes). Some games are just bound to sell better on Nintendo platforms, and that makes me even more of a mind that Playtonic should have delayed the other versions in order to have a day-one release on Switch (with the bugs squashed, no less, which would probably give it a much warmer critical response).

Re: Review: Metroid: Samus Returns (3DS)

ricklongo

Excellent, well written review. Still not getting it, as my 3DS has a broken circle pad that I don't really want to bother fixing (and, well, shallow as that might sound, I just can't seem to get very excited about the old portable anymore).

Definitely getting Prime 4, though, even if I'm 100% not a fan of first-person games, so hopefully that makes up for it.

Re: Axiom Verge Is Coming To The Switch Early In Europe

@dystome The name has relation to a bit on in-game lore, meaning you have to play it to get it.

Either way, if you enjoy Metroid and haven't played this yet, by all means go for it. Fantastic game that has enough cool ideas to absolutely be its own thing.

Re: Review: LEGO Worlds (Switch)

ricklongo

Got it day one, and I think it's an amazing concept marred by poor implementation. I was hoping this would be a game to last me months on end, but I'm already fatigued by the quest structure of story mode, merely 25 gold bricks in.

Re: Switch Version Of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap Sold More Than All The Other Versions Combined

ricklongo

@Shellcore That's certainly a big factor, but I wouldn't say it's enough to justify this kind of dominance - especially given how the instal base on other platforms is also exponentially bigger at the moment. I mean, the Switch isn't simply the platform where it sold best; it outsold PS4, Xbox and Steam combined. That's pretty impressive, no matter how you look at it.

I loved the original on Master System, loved the remake, and love my Switch, so this is certainly awesome news. Hopefully we get more and more indies of similar quality, as that's incresingly where I've been finding my favorite gaming experiences in this day and age.

Re: Lichtspeer Developer Suggests That Nintendo Has Switch Achievements in the Works

ricklongo

Achievements can be done right or wrong in my opinion. They're fine if tied to stuff you're probably already going to want to do for gameplay reasons, such as collect all the moons in Mario Odyssey, beat all the shrines in Breath of the Wild, or get perfect scores in Kingdom Battle. When they're used to artificially increase a game's lenght in inane ways, however, they tend to annoy the hell out of me.

Example: I recently played Night in the Woods on my PS4, and was getting fairly into the game's achievement system... Until I realized that to get a lot of them you'd have to beat the game twice, and to get a platinum you'd have to beat it THREE times at the very least (more than that if you screw up some sections). That made me frustrated for getting into them and seeking them out in the first place, which didn't ruin my experience with the game, but was annoying nonetheless.

So well, if Nintendo wants to implement them, that's fine, but I hope 1) they're well designed in most games, at least first-party ones, and 2) they can be turned off if the player so chooses.

Re: Feature: The Switch Report - Six Months of Nintendo's Hybrid System

ricklongo

All valid points about what the system is lacking (except for the joycon D-pad, which I think works pretty much perfectly). Still, I'm extremely happy with the things Nintendo did get right. The Switch is such a convenient machine that my PS4 and 3DS have been all but collecting dust. In fact, I think I use my Wii U more than those two combined, thanks to that system's excellent streaming app accessibility.

It's obviously very early in the console's life cycle, but it may just end up surpassing the SNES as my favorite of all time. I was optimistic with the concept before launch, now I'm completely ecstatic about it.

Re: Video: Nintendo of Europe Unleashes a Tasty Nintendo x Indies Sizzle Reel

ricklongo

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Not sure if you're trolling with comment #11, but anyway: yes, indies are third-parties (meaning that they aren't first- or second-parties). A game being 'third-party' only means it wasn't developed by a console manufacturer or one of their subsidiaries.

Conversely, not all third-parties are indies, since there are big-budget video game developers that aren't console manufacturers or one of their subsidiaries.

It's really not that hard to understand.

EDIT: Also, yeah, personal tastes and all that, but as far as my interest goes, some of those games are ages ahead of most stuff AAA third-parties put out these days. Even in my Playstation 4, which obviously doesn't lack big-budget support, the vast majority of my favorite titles are indies. So, from a quality standpoint, I really don't understand your continuous complaining about indie games.

Re: Dataminers Have Found 3DS Code in Mega Man Legacy Collection 2

ricklongo

@Nico87Mega Man Legacy 2 inexplicably skipping Nintendo hardware for one, or Disney Afternoon Collection, or their refusal to commit to a western release for Monster Hunter Switch. The Switch is super hot right now, especially in their native Japan, and yet their titles, which look like a slam dunk in Nintendo's platform, often miss out on it.

Re: Review: Sonic Mania (Switch eShop)

ricklongo

Got it yesterday, and it's really good. Still has the same problems every Sonic game had in the 90's, though - the focus on speed and the exploratiom are at complete odds with each other. A solid 8/10 for me.

Re: Review: Slime-san (Switch eShop)

ricklongo

The only reason I won't get this right away is I'm busy with both Gonner and Sonic Mania in the 2D platformer department. Will certainly do so at some point, though. Been hearing nothing but good things about it.
