I can't wait to see how Yooka-Laylee on Switch compares to other versions' sales (and A Hat in Time too, if that ever comes). Some games are just bound to sell better on Nintendo platforms, and that makes me even more of a mind that Playtonic should have delayed the other versions in order to have a day-one release on Switch (with the bugs squashed, no less, which would probably give it a much warmer critical response).
Excellent, well written review. Still not getting it, as my 3DS has a broken circle pad that I don't really want to bother fixing (and, well, shallow as that might sound, I just can't seem to get very excited about the old portable anymore).
Definitely getting Prime 4, though, even if I'm 100% not a fan of first-person games, so hopefully that makes up for it.
As I couldn't care less about mobile, I won't be following it. I hope Nintendo does make an appearance, though. I want this Apple partnership to become a tradition so that no precious Direct time is ever dedicated to mobile games.
@dystome The name has relation to a bit on in-game lore, meaning you have to play it to get it.
Either way, if you enjoy Metroid and haven't played this yet, by all means go for it. Fantastic game that has enough cool ideas to absolutely be its own thing.
Been waiting for this one for a while, and it sounds like a possible Switch port is still a year or more away, so I'm likely getting it on PS4 upon release. Hope it delivers!
Got it day one, and I think it's an amazing concept marred by poor implementation. I was hoping this would be a game to last me months on end, but I'm already fatigued by the quest structure of story mode, merely 25 gold bricks in.
@Captain_Gonru Yeah, absolutely. A remaster of either V3 or V2 would make me pretty happy. Still frustrating that they could be so dumb in regards to a new entry in a beloved franchise.
@Shellcore That's certainly a big factor, but I wouldn't say it's enough to justify this kind of dominance - especially given how the instal base on other platforms is also exponentially bigger at the moment. I mean, the Switch isn't simply the platform where it sold best; it outsold PS4, Xbox and Steam combined. That's pretty impressive, no matter how you look at it.
I loved the original on Master System, loved the remake, and love my Switch, so this is certainly awesome news. Hopefully we get more and more indies of similar quality, as that's incresingly where I've been finding my favorite gaming experiences in this day and age.
@readyletsgo Whoa, really? Now that's disappointing. What is it with companies ruining perfectly good franchises by trying to reinvent the wheel and forgetting what's appealing about them? It happened with Ubisoft and Heroes of Might and Magic too.
Micro Machines is one of my absolute favorite multiplayer franchises (if not my outright favorite), and getting a title on Switch would be a freaking dream. I kid you not, it may well be the straw that breaks the camel's back when it comes to some of my mates finally pulling the trigger and getting the system.
Achievements can be done right or wrong in my opinion. They're fine if tied to stuff you're probably already going to want to do for gameplay reasons, such as collect all the moons in Mario Odyssey, beat all the shrines in Breath of the Wild, or get perfect scores in Kingdom Battle. When they're used to artificially increase a game's lenght in inane ways, however, they tend to annoy the hell out of me.
Example: I recently played Night in the Woods on my PS4, and was getting fairly into the game's achievement system... Until I realized that to get a lot of them you'd have to beat the game twice, and to get a platinum you'd have to beat it THREE times at the very least (more than that if you screw up some sections). That made me frustrated for getting into them and seeking them out in the first place, which didn't ruin my experience with the game, but was annoying nonetheless.
So well, if Nintendo wants to implement them, that's fine, but I hope 1) they're well designed in most games, at least first-party ones, and 2) they can be turned off if the player so chooses.
@rjejr I don't think it will outsell DQ overall, and especially not if the Switch version does happen after all. I mean, DQ is pretty much Japan's Call of Duty when it comes to ridiculous sales numbers.
If Nintendo keeps nurturing the Splatoon franchise, however, it could definitely reach DQ status a couple entries down the line.
All valid points about what the system is lacking (except for the joycon D-pad, which I think works pretty much perfectly). Still, I'm extremely happy with the things Nintendo did get right. The Switch is such a convenient machine that my PS4 and 3DS have been all but collecting dust. In fact, I think I use my Wii U more than those two combined, thanks to that system's excellent streaming app accessibility.
It's obviously very early in the console's life cycle, but it may just end up surpassing the SNES as my favorite of all time. I was optimistic with the concept before launch, now I'm completely ecstatic about it.
It looks and sounds great! The fact that it's rhythm-based kinda disappoints me a bit, but given the pedigree behind it, I'd definitely give it a chance om Switch.
All the people complaining about this game not having 'cutting edge' graphics remind me of the time I decided to play through The Order: 1886 on PS4. Probably the most realistic looking game I ever played. Also quite likely the worst game I ever played.
I'm interested, but can't really justify it when they are cheaper on the 3DS and I have already so much on my gaming plate. Maybe when there's a promotion of sorts, because Inti certainly deserves it.
At this point, I'm game for anything Inti puts out, really. (Although I do wish Capcom would bring a couple of Inti's earlier games to the Switch, if you know what I mean.)
This was my favorite surprise of the showcase. Also, the last time we got a Mexico-tinged e-Shop game (Guacamelee), it ended up being one of my absolute favorites, so I'm optimistic. 😁
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Not sure if you're trolling with comment #11, but anyway: yes, indies are third-parties (meaning that they aren't first- or second-parties). A game being 'third-party' only means it wasn't developed by a console manufacturer or one of their subsidiaries.
Conversely, not all third-parties are indies, since there are big-budget video game developers that aren't console manufacturers or one of their subsidiaries.
It's really not that hard to understand.
EDIT: Also, yeah, personal tastes and all that, but as far as my interest goes, some of those games are ages ahead of most stuff AAA third-parties put out these days. Even in my Playstation 4, which obviously doesn't lack big-budget support, the vast majority of my favorite titles are indies. So, from a quality standpoint, I really don't understand your continuous complaining about indie games.
Ship stage looks all sort of awesome, but I'm a bit disappointed that the new Salmon Run area looks a lot like Marooner's Bay. Let's see how they stack up in practice.
I really thought those buttons would bother me, but... They don't. At all. So I really do think there are better things for them to concern themselves with.
One of my most anticipated Switch titles, especially because it seems such a perfect fit. I've resisted getting it on PC and PS4, so hopefully we don't have long to wait now.
@Nico87Mega Man Legacy 2 inexplicably skipping Nintendo hardware for one, or Disney Afternoon Collection, or their refusal to commit to a western release for Monster Hunter Switch. The Switch is super hot right now, especially in their native Japan, and yet their titles, which look like a slam dunk in Nintendo's platform, often miss out on it.
At this point it's obvious Nintendo and Capcom had some sort of falling out. It's the only thing that would explain some of the company's decision in face of the Switch's success. Let's hope this is sorted out soon.
Got it yesterday, and it's really good. Still has the same problems every Sonic game had in the 90's, though - the focus on speed and the exploratiom are at complete odds with each other. A solid 8/10 for me.
The only reason I won't get this right away is I'm busy with both Gonner and Sonic Mania in the 2D platformer department. Will certainly do so at some point, though. Been hearing nothing but good things about it.
I'm not into speedrunning myself (as methodical exploration is probably my favorite thing about games), but stuff like this is super impressive to watch. That special weapon trick near the end was all sorts of awesome.

Re: Get Ready for a Nintendo Direct on 13th September
@PanurgeJr Hahahaha, well, I do think Mario shouldn't be in a possible third game - let Luigi be the sole focus.
(Then again, I'm willing to forgive a lot if they just give us a damn sequel already!)
Re: Oh Yes, Resident Evil Revelations Will Have Joy-Con Pointing and Waggling on Switch
"Let's be honest, we'll all try them just because they're included"
Well, I do have the ability to bang my head on the wall, yet I choose not to.
Re: Get Ready for a Nintendo Direct on 13th September
Right, this time my dream announcement wish is gonna be... Luigi's Mansion 3.

@Neon_Blues Are you sure they're using Carbon Rollers, and not of of the other rollers? The stronger/slower ones splat in a single touch.

Annoying, but them's the breaks. Still surprised this is coming at all, so hopefully it succeeds.

They said at some point all Wii U backers would get the Switch version as well. If that's the case, awesome stuff.
I'm a Wii U backer myself, so I feel compelled to wait until I can get it on Switch.
Re: Nintendo Switch Still Leads in Japan as Etrian Mystery Dungeon 2 Makes Debut
Quite impressive that Splatoon is selling more weekly than both DQX versions combined. Goes to show that it's bound to have ridiculously long legs.
Re: Poi: Explorer Edition Heads to Switch With Exclusive Content in October
Seems a bit on the expensive side for what it offers, but I'm always happy to play a 3D exploration platformer.
Still waiting for Yooka-Laylee news, though.

I was always gonna get Lego Worlds, but that price point makes me even happier about it.
Re: Super Meat Boy Forever Bounces onto Nintendo Switch in 2018
@Smigit Thanks, that's what I meant. Got my terminology confused a bit.
Still, it's kinda disheartening that's the case. I wish they'd release a mobile-specific version and a console one.
Re: Next Up Hero Will Join the Ranks on Switch in 2018
Not really feeling the premise here. It's sort of multiplayer, but it sort of isn't, and this makes the game feel a bit schizophrenic to me.
Re: Super Meat Boy Forever Bounces onto Nintendo Switch in 2018
Yeah, not a fan of this being an endless runner. I honestly can't understand why they'd go for such a move.

Re: SteamWorld Dig 2 Arrives on 21st September, Image & Form Confirms Pricing
One of my most currently anticipated games. Super stoked to know I'll be pkaying it in just a few weeks.
As for the price, well, as far as adventure games go, I'll take a higher price for a bigger game every time.

So, go team Flight! (And hopefully Marina will pick the right side at some point...)
Re: Nintendo Download: 17th August (North America)
@Spoony_Tech Yep, same here. Nice to hace a respite for my wallet, at least!
(Obligatory 'I would get it if it were on the Switch' for Chicken Wiggle. I really don't feel like fixing my 3DS circle pad at this point.)
