For quite a while now, there’s been plenty of talk about the Mega Man movie which has been in and out of development hell. This past summer, however, some meaningful progress was made this summer as the project reportedly picked up its writers and directors. Their inclusion has now been confirmed and the movie has technically now begun its production.
Speaking with Collider, Masayori Oka—producer of the new Death Note Netflix movie—talked more about the movie in a recent interview, being quick to point out that it’s still early days yet. He also mentioned how it presents “challenges” to translate game mechanic-heavy, story-light games to film, but he sounds optimistic about the outcome. Here’s what was said:
Are you still working on producing a Mega Man movie?
OKA: We’ve just started the Mega Man movie. The writer/directors are working on a script right now, and we’re just in the beginning development stages of that.
What are you most excited about with that, and are there challenges specific to producing a story that’s based on a best-selling video game vs. a hugely popular manga?
OKA: With manga, there’s a lot of character development and it’s a serialized story. With a video game, it’s about game mechanics. The story might be a little bit lighter. There are definitely challenges with that, but I’m excited because our directors are big fans of the game. With anything animated, a game property, or anything IP, you want to make sure the filmmakers are huge fans because they’ll show a respect for the property and understand, at the core, what makes that property great. I don’t know where it’s going to go yet, but I am excited about Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman. They’re great filmmakers and they’re really big fans of Mega Man.
What do you think? Will we see a new Mega Man game before the movie is ready? How do you think it’ll turn out? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

No thanks.
I mean, I really do want this to work, but there are so few examples of films based off games working...
Im just afraid they'll do so bad that Capcom will see even less reason to support megaman.
Capcom: "What's this? Megaman did bad on the Silver Screen? Better cancel that megaman legends 3 game... again."
There's stuff that simply doesn't need or fits a live adaptation. An animated series or movie is fine, they don't have to make everything a live action hollywood movie.
netflix will make a movie about anything, really. best of luck to them!
If it's half as good as Super Mario Bros. the movie it will be an instant classic up there with 2001 and The Godfather.
Just make it good and put a lot of heart and care into it okay. Hopefully this turns out good, but I have my doubts since it's planned to be live action movie rather than animated.
I just want a new game, Capcom...
@roy130390 I think this is gonna be animated, tho
Hopefully at least animated, Netflix has done some decent stuff. I could see this fitting in nicely.
If they can write the story and characters to the emotions of the music (and numerous interpretations of the music), then that could guide them to a good movie. If they ignore that, it will make their job that much more difficult.
"producer of the new Death Note Netflix movie"
I have now lost all interest in this Mega Man movie.
I already know this movie will be bad.
@Kalmaro
That's what I'm afraid of.
I have only played one Mega man game in my lifetime but like others have said, this should be a cartoon or CG film..if it is,then fair enough there is still hope but live action?...I can already see this film as being an embarrassment and a flop..
@NintenNinja16 im not a fan of the "just make it good." sentiment. Making movies is incredibly hard. Making a good movie is even harder. It's not like people usually go out and say "I'm gonna make a poopy movie today!"
@In_Ex_Fan No doubt. People don't choose to make crap.
But remember that failure is not an option, it is a result.
@SomeWriter13 that still doesn't change what I originally said.
They should make it live action and base the look of the film on the US Box Art for the first game. Instant box office smash.
I'm already seeing the new Michael Bay being born. I'm also seeing "Massive crap on Mega Man franchise."
Doing a CG movie will be taking the Pac-Man route. Doing a classic animated movie will be marred with terrible pop culture jokes. Worst of all, there haven't been any new, decent Mega Man games in a few years, so 10 year-old kids should not be the target audience. This movie will definitely have a negative impact on MM.
They should have just put the money into doing a good game or getting the ability to make Mega Man Maker HD on consoles and then, taking the money generated to do the writing for MML3.
Hope for the best; prepare for a stinking turd.
Please, don't.
Zero chance that this will be good. People like throwing money in the trash, I guess.
It will probably not be good, but if we get some chiptunes out of it it won't be all bad.
Castlevania on Netflix has been surprisingly awesome. If this movie is for Netflix--where the demands on a film are different--then I'll hold out hope for it. If this is for move theaters, just no.
What are the odds that this will be worse than the live action fan movie that was made several years ago, which is actually pretty good? Better than even, I think.
@Dr_Awkward The Voltron series is awesome as well. I have good hopes for this, apparently unlike the rest of this site's members who'd rather nothing ever got made.
It would be nice if lightning can strike twice for Castlevania and this but I won't hold my breath. Hopes high, expectations low-- Good place to reside...
@In_Ex_Fan I completely get what you're saying, especially given the fact I've attempted making short movies myself in the past, I would go in with a great idea, only to finish it and have the product be something mediocre.
I guess essentially all I was trying to say in my original post is that I hope it turns out good and that the people who are bringing Mega Man to life on the big screen put in as much love and passion into it as they can.
@NintenNinja16 I also hope it turns out good! As a frequent moviegoer (at least once a week) I've seen my fair share of crap that I wanted to be good. It's a step in the right direction if the people behind this movie are as big fans of the property as it's stated.
@In_Ex_Fan I'm merely pointing out the oddity of the notion that people "choose" to fail. I'm sure everyone sets out to succeed and make something "great" but sometimes come up short.
NintenNinja16's "Just make it good" is also from the point of view of a consume, and is result/product-oriented, while your point of view is producer oriented, so I'm assuming "good" in that sense insinuates laziness/underestimation. The original "just make it good" statement was probably the hopeful kind, with good = what we wanted it to be. Like both of you, I am hoping we get to see a good treatment of Mega Man.
This movie will be bad box art Mega Man BAD.
@SomeWriter13 yeah, I that's what I said too. Sometimes, pretty often actually people think they got something great on their hands, everyone involved is excited about it but then it turns out to be such a big pile of crap like Warcraft.
Sure "just make it good" probably was intended to say more than that but I reject saying it at all for the reasons I already mentioned. Just because you shouldn't see things only from a consumer or business standpoint. I want Mega Man to be good, but I'm not lighting my torch if it doesn't, you know?
@In_Ex_Fan I agree with you 100%, including Warcraft!
@SomeWriter13 I was so excited for Warcraft. But in the end Durotan and Doomhammer were the only characters I cared about... And we all know what happened.
