Re: Oxenfree Comes to the North American eShop on 6th October

ricklongo

I'm not a huge fan of narrative-based games, truth be told. A recent example is Night in the Woods on PS4, which looks lovely and has a truly great story, but features gameplay that got really boring extremely quickly for me. I still finished it and I'm glad I did, I just wish the pacing of the gameplay had been less sluggish.

I'm getting Oxenfree on Switch, and hope it doesn't replicate NitW's problems.

Wait, the draw distance TOOK A HIT? You mean the draw distance that was already atrocioua in the first place?

Clicking this article hasn't been the best at convincing me to dive back in, that's for sure.

Re: Playtonic Games is Working on Unity Issues for Yooka-Laylee on Switch

December would be a nice release date, as people who bought Mario Odyssey may be craving for another 3D platformer at that point. Or maybe that's too soon? There are benefits for pushing it into early 2018, especially as January is typically a very slow month.

Either way, I'm a backer, and I can't wait to finally get it. Not that bothered by the middling reviews, as most reviewers seem to want entirely different things from me when it comes to 3D platformers (as the positive reception to Ratchet and Clank / Crash Bandicoot has shown). Hopefully it's released in a much better technical state than the original versions, which I'm optimistic about after the last few months' worth of patches.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Switch and Third-Parties - Let's Be Realistic

ricklongo

All I hope is that this initial batch sells well enough on Switch that less graphically demanding multiplats of the future (think South Park or Ni No Kuni) start coming out on the Switch as a default. I can certainly understand if a company doesn't want to bother downscaling an uber-realistic game to fit Nintendo's hybrid machine, but there are plenty of interesting games that would offer only minimal hassle to be ported.

As for me, I'm extremely excited for Skyrim and L.A. Noire. I hope those are only the beginning of my AAA third party collection on the console.

Re: Video: Exploring The 8-Bit Mega Man Games Of The SNES Era

ricklongo

Mega Man 5 is fantastic, and stands as my third favorite of the original series after 3 and 2. 6 is less of a gem, but hey, it's 8-bit Mega Man, meaning it's tight and addictive all the same.

Incidentally, 5 features some.of my favorite 8 bit tunes ever, such as Wave Man, Wily Castle #1 and the boss theme.

Re: Review: Kingdom: New Lands (Switch eShop)

I think this looks gorgeous, and builder/survival gameplay is something I really love. However, the review doesn't say it explicitly, but I got the idea that the game employs permadeath, which is increasingly my biggest frustration when it comes to these building-based games. I hate dedicating myself for hours on end to make a thriving civilization, only to be forced to start over thanks to a single mistake.

I may get this, but permadeath (and the fact I already have a lot on my plate right now) will make me wait a bit for a discount.

Re: Review: Monster Hunter Stories (3DS)

ricklongo

I'm not exactly a MH fan, but this looks more like something I'd enjoy. I'd have to fix my 3DS circle pad, though, and given how much I have on my plate for Switch and PS4, I probably won't. Them's the breaks.

Re: Feature: What We Expect from the Nintendo Direct - 13th September

ricklongo

It's finally Wednesday! I know @rjejr will hate me for saying this, but man I miss it when Directs were announced less than 24 hours before they happened. Yesterday it was hard to concentrate on work while I speculated with friends, and I doubt it will be much different today. Or maybe I just need to not be so worked up about Directs.

Either way, I'm trying to keep expectations in check. Hopefully there's at least one big unannounced game to be revealed today.

Re: Editorial: A Week of Gaming the Nintendo Switch Way

ricklongo

I often see people make predictions about the Switch based on the fact that it's a handheld, or that it's a home console. Intriguingly, people seem to miss that it's actually neither (or perhaps that it's both, depending on how you look at it). It really is like no other mainstream gaming device, and as such frames of reference have to be adjusted accordingly.

This was a nice read, one that illustrates the point nicely.

Re: Switch Versions Of Oceanhorn And forma.8 Outsell Console Rivals

ricklongo

@rjejr You got a point, though I was talking about Yooka less for being an indie and more for being in a genre that's bound to appeal more to Nintendo audiences.

Given that the game was released in a bad techical state, it seems even more of a no-brainer to delay release and get it out on Switch for day one.

Either way, I'm still super excited for it, especially given how I still love Banjo and DK64 to this day, warts and all.
