Splatoon 2 has already seen a number of changes since launch, adding in new stages and content alongside some much needed tweaks to balancing the greater metagame. It’s been a bit since the last update—although we have naturally seen the addition of some new stages and weapons, periodically—and now Nintendo has put out a fairly meaty patch that makes a number of big changes.
Perhaps the most important news is that, yes, the Tri-Slosher has finally gotten its much needed nerf, with a decrease in both range and damage output. That’s not all, though, as Salmon Run, Splatfest, and regular multiplayer have all seen a number of bug fixes and improvements. Take a gander at the full notes below:
- Changes to Salmon Run
- Changes made to the Sting Ray and Splashdown specials for multiplayer also apply to their use in Salmon Run.
- Bombs thrown by the Steelhead will no longer land on top of Flyfish or Scrappers.
- Fixed an issue causing no damage to be dealt to Steel Eels hit with a Sting Ray if the Sting Ray’s shot inked any portion of the Steel Eel other than the pilot even slightly.
- Fixed an issue preventing damage from being dealt to a Griller hit with a Sting Ray attempting to hit its weak point by shooting through it. Sting Rays that only hit the main body of a Griller will now also deal some damage.
- Fixed an issue causing Steelheads that appeared in specific locations of the Lost Outpost stage not to attack.
- Fixed an issue where two players attempting to pick up a single Golden Egg just prior to the end of a wave caused one of them to be unable to pick up any Golden Eggs during the following wave.
- Fixed an issue where after playing Salmon Run online, players from your session who appeared in Inkopolis Square were always equipped with the Splattershot Jr.
- Fixed an issue where players who disconnected just prior to starting a round of play would appear to be holding a Rainmaker-like weapon.
- Fixed an issue causing the location of the arrow indicating the player’s character as well as their title to be incorrect on the result screen when other players disconnected just prior to the end of a round of play.
- Fixed an issue causing players using Roller-type weapons to get a communications error after holding the inking button for an extended period.
- Changes to Splatfest
- Fixed an issue where during a Splatfest, all players you recently played with appeared in Inkopolis Square with a Splatfest Tee with no slots filled in, regardless of the actual status of their Splatfest Tee.
- Experience points required to fill in slots on Splatfest Tees have been changed in the following ways:
- Slot 1 – 4000 > 7500
- Slot 2 – 8000 > 7500
- Slot 3 – 12000 > 7500
- Total – 24000 > 22500
- Changes to Multiplayer
- In Ranked Battle, regarding the special gauge increasing automatically based on mode-specific conditions, until now the special gauge would fill up regardless of the points required for the main weapon being used. Now, main weapons with a lower special gauge point requirement will have their gauges filled faster, and those with a higher point requirement will have their gauges filled more slowly.
- Fixed an issue causing the area below where shots from a Sloshing Machine or Rainmaker hit a wall to not be inked.
- Fixed an issue where players with the Inkbrush or Octobrush equipped occasionally dealt continuous damage to opponents when coming into contact with them on uninkable surfaces.
- Fixed an issue causing Sponges touched by an Inkbrush or Octobrush to expand rapidly.
- Fixed an issue where players with a Roller or Brella-type weapon equipped would temporarily be unable to recover from damage after coming into direct contact with an opponent and being knocked back.
- Fixed an issue preventing players from damaging opponents via direct contact immediately after performing a vertical swing with a Roller-type weapon.
- Ink splats will no longer appear on players submerged in ink when hit by a Sting Ray fired by one of their allies.
- Fixed an issue causing shots from the Inkjet to occasionally disappear without exploding when hitting stage objects at certain angles.
- Fixed an issue where players with active Ink Armor hit by the Splat Brella would react as though protected by the armor, but also as if they had taken damage.
- Fixed an issue preventing ink from properly appearing on walls where the wall intersected with a grate.
- Fixed an issue when using Spectator Mode in Private Battle that caused Squid Beakons to not be destroyed after being used.
- Fixed an issue causing walls intersecting with grates to appear uninked when hit with the explosion from a Suction Bomb.
- Fixed an issue causing players to clip into stage objects on Sturgeon Shipyard.
- Specifications for some of the main weapons have been changed.
- Specifications for some of the special weapons have been changed.
- Specifications for some of the sub weapons have been changed.
- Points required to fill the special gauge for some weapons have been changed.

Finally! Slosher nerf and new and improved stingray. All I could ask for.
Also, the slosher does about 41 damage from above consistently now, so no more being 2 shot from above.
The only people that won't be happy about this are those who used the Tri-Slosher.
Looks like the Rapid Blaster got nerfed too, which is a good thing. I'm not sure how I feel about the Inkjet nerf though; when I'm fighting an Inkjet I get annoyed at how hard they are to splat, but when I'm using an Inkjet I get annoyed at how quickly I get splatted.
I just want to know why when using the carbon roller I just bounce off people, but when someone runs in to me with the carbon roller, I go down instantly.
Also, does speed up ability affect running speed with the rollers?
@Neon_Blues Speed up does not effect roller speed. I've heard it works on ground that you can't paint, but that's kinda pointless.
Finally, Splatfest is an even more effective way of farming ability chunks!
Nice changes. Maybe there will be more weapon variety during matches now that Tri-Slosher isn't as good. I haven't played Splatoon 2 for a while though since I've been enjoying Mario + Rabbids so much.
@Kalmaro Thanks. Got to change a couple of slots then.
Why do they nerf things just when I have started to use them?
@Grumblevolcano Wasn't it more effective before?
You could get 1 slot, then out to wipe, then get that first slot again.
@TommyTLG It's more cost effective now.
These are very good changes
No, Buckie Boo! I think I'll be able to adjust to them, though. Was real easy wiping 3 out of 4 players with that thing. Gonna update once I get home in a sec.
OMG this is pretty much the first time since I play online games that a developer addressed nearly all issues I had with a game. Slosher was ridiculous and should be in a good place now.
I'm very happy about the ink-jet nerf mostly since I had really big trouble with that ability when I'm not on my rapid blaster. Also buffed stingray, splashdown and cloud are great. Lovely update.
@BensonUii Just checked my Played With list (wow, it's only going back to Sep. 2nd!), usually the player's page shows Splatoon 2 in Japanese in their activity list and Splatoon 2 in english in Recently Played. I think that it has to show english because I'm looking at it from within my region, but I'm not 100%. Now, with my extremely limited Japanese character knowledge, their names don't look like something a westerner would put (ex. shyoshyo~mei, translated from Japanese characters). Unfortunately, it doesn't show their country in their page, so I can't be 100% certain.
However, I distinctly remember more Japanese named players from Salmon Run, where the majority of the Japanese players I run into are, that didn't show up on the list. Don't know why that is unless it somehow prevents me from seeing them in my Played With list for some reason.
That's a hell of an update. Nice to know they care about the game.
@Neon_Blues
Carbon roller cannot splat an opponent at full health when rolling over them, you need two hits. If your getting splatted once then it's because you weren't at full health when they whent rolling over you.
@Yozora146_ But I swear I'm at full health...
Is it possible to get crushed at 99.9%?
"When talking to Murch, a player’s current money and Super Sea Snails will now be displayed in the upper right portion of the screen."
Yay!
That's a huge update, sounds like good improvements. The tri-slosher getting knocked back is a huge sigh of relief, that thing was constantly killing me in one hit.
@Neon_Blues Are you sure they're using Carbon Rollers, and not of of the other rollers? The stronger/slower ones splat in a single touch.
Looks like the Rapid Blaster got a minor nerf, and I'm glad the Tri-Slosher got nerfed. I just hope both of them aren't as a pain in the butt now.
So glad they left the Luna Blaster and Dualies alone. Tentatek Splattershot getting a buff was a surprise though. I was messing around with it the other day and that set is absurdly useful for every situation. And its damage output was already respectable.
Stingray as well as a number of the other specials NEEDED these buffs! I can't stress that enough - it was rare to see anyone use anything but the Inkjet in some of my matches and I didn't feel like I would be able to do much with the Baller. So that's nice.
But of course, the coup de grace of this whole patch? Tri-Slosher. There were at least 2-3 people in every match who were using them and it was starting to get frustrating. I really hope people will branch out now and try something else.
@ricklongo Yes, I'm sure they're carbon rollers, because I got splated by someone using the same roller as me, and I remember thinking "Oh cool! I can just steam roll people with this one!", but then I start bouncing off everyone, and getting upset. Then later in the match, I get steam rolled again by the same guy!
The Squid Armor has never worked properly for me either.
I wish I had a way to record game footage as proof, but I don't have any means of doing so.
Maybe this new update will finally fix things on my end?
"When talking to Murch, a player’s current money and Super Sea Snails will now be displayed in the upper right portion of the screen."
Thank god.
Also, not sure I feel about the Splat Tee. On one hand, it encourages one to take the abilities to the max before scrubbing. But at the same time, scrubbing after 2-3 matches (with a drink buff) for only $2,000 will be sorely missed. Now you'd have to play 4 games AT LEAST and make sure you win 2. But seeing as that's consistent throughout all abilities...I have maths to perform!!
@ThatNyteDaez Tentatek Splattershot actually got SEVERELY nerfed, not buffed. Points needed until ulti (ink jet) have been increased and the ink jet itself received a huge nerf too. Good for me since I always preferred the standard splattershot set.
@BensonUii It's been an intriguing question since launch: does Spla2oon employ strict regional matchmaking all the time now (like is does in SplatFests).
I think the answer is no, but it does use ping-based matchmaking, which prioritises matching you up with players that are geographically nearer to you for increased stability. So while this means you far more likely to be with matched with players in your region, it doesn't make it impossible to play with Japanese players; just significantly rarer.
I miss having the Japanese players around too though. The plaza had a lot of very attractive art, and it would make a nice change from the English memes that have broken out. I also find that lobbies are emptier at certain times of night, whereas that was never a problem when things were more globally connected. I hope they make things a little looser with regards to the ping thing. I never had very bad stability problems in the first game, and often I was being matched with 7 Japanese players.
Also, BOOYAH for the updates!
My Tri-Slosher!
NO GOD!
NO GOD, PLEASE NO!
NO!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
@JarJarBlacks Yes
@Yozora146_ It can splat them if they are in Squid form I believe.
@JarJarBlacks Now you gotta win fairly Darth Jarjar - no more dark side tricks.
@masterLEON @Gibb I still use the Aerospray MG as my main, but I find that it is sooo overused in this game. Tri-Slosher was my backup when I got bored of the Aerospray MG.
These are all excellent updates

I'm glad I made it S+ before they nerfed the tri slosher. Tower control just won't be the same.
@JarJarBlacks It's weird, how did the Aerosprays make a comeback? I remember they were used by EVERYONE when they came out in the first game before people started using other weapons. And now they're back. I would've thought the Sploosh-O-Matic or Splattershot Jr. would be more popular, but I guess I'm wrong.
Major bummer to me, I loved my tri slosher...I don't care what anyone says, it takes a certain kind of person to be good with sloshers🙄
Now I see stingrays all over the place and it's pretty lame...
@uhhhhhhhh Well now it just takes an even more certain type of person to be good with the Tri-Slosher. So you're even more special!
Can anyone let me know if they patched that single player meal ticket exploit or not?
Now everyone's using the sloshing Machine due to the buffed up stingray. I feel like the the sloshing Machine plays too much like a blaster tho, I'm not too good with blasters
On the bright side, it's nice to have a more powerful inkstorm and splashdown available, it's nice to see the Dynamics get mixed up quite a bit in the game. Finally the brella feels less useless lol
@Maxz
That made me lol
I will say the tri slosher folks are still running 13+ splats per match on most ranked battles, so I suppose the nerf didn't totally ruin its mojo
Plus it is always fun to try new weapons. Salmon run is a perfect training ground too 😁
I haven't used the Tri-Slosher since my beloved Sloshing Machine was added. I gave it a whirl after the update to see how bad it got, and honestly, it doesn't feel all that different to me.
I'm very happy about the Sting Ray fix! As a Sloshing Machine user, I really felt that the Sting Ray special was more of a hindrance than a benefit until this update.
It's drastically improved my game.
Heavy Splatling's kit is at least slightly better now. Actually got a few krills from the formerly-useless Stingray, and many more times I've actually been threatened by other players using that special. Still hesitant to actively use the Sprinkler though despite its reduction in ink consumption; still too much needing to stop and reload after tossing one out.
I actually DON'T like the change they made to the Splatfest Tee. I scrubbed after getting two slots filled in, and that cost 12000 then as opposed to 15000 now. A difference of 3000 EXP points for me and 3500 points for those who scrubbed after one slot.
