Re: Review: Little Dragons Café (Switch)

I honestly don't mind paying full price for a game if it's lovingly crafted, and I'm definitely vey interested in this. But to pay $60 and get a technical mess... sadly, I'll have to pass for now.

Hopefully there's a patch in the new future, and then I might reconsider.

@Shiryu Eveline composed the soundtrack for DKC3 almost on her own. The first two games are basically all Wise, though (with DKC2, probably my favorite soundtrack of all time, being literally all Wise).

Re: Daemon X Machina Producer Believes A Lot Of Modern Games Look The Same

Most AAA games go for the photorealistic look, so yeah, they end up looking very similar. By the same token, pixel-based indie games can blend together after a while.

This is not something that necessarily puts me off all that much, at least until along comes something as unique as Octopath Traveler. Then I'm reminded that I do vastly prefer graphics that go for a unique art direction, and wish more devs had that mindset.

Re: Hands On: Falling Into Endless Spike Pits In Mega Man 11

@JayJ Wow, I couldn't disagree more. Mega Man 8 is, in my opinion, by far the worst entry in the series, with its incredibly busy and overwrought aesthetic, floaty controls, wildly uneven level design and the frustrating four-then-four formula. 7 fares a bit better, but it only beats out 8 and 1 for me.

9 and 10, on the other hand, went back to a kind of level design we hadn't seen since MM3, where weapons actually matter and help out in neat ways during stages. 9 might be, objectively, the best game in the franchise (even if 3 is still my favorite).

@justin233 For what it's worth, I do understand and agree with the criticism in the review, but I'm still having a lot of laid-back fun with the game. The one thing I really wish was different is the villagers you encounter, as they have close to no personality (and personality is what makes games like Stardew Valley so fantastic for me).

I'd give it an 8/10 right now. I guess the points of contention don't annoy me nearly as much as it did the reviewer, and I just really enjoy exploring a peaceful, pastoral world while befriending pixies, acquiring farm lots and cleaning the land from whatever menial problem it has.

Re: Review: Don’t Starve: Nintendo Switch Edition (Switch eShop)

One of my favorite games in my Wii U library. I do wish it had an easy mode with no permadeath, because the game's ruthlessness at points made me play it way too safe to not jeopardize my one-man empire. But it's indeed an incredible experience.

I'd probably double dip for Don't Starve Together, especially given that the hybrid nature of the Switch would allow me to play that mode locally often with friends.

Also, I have to say that I disagree VEHEMENTLY in regards to the presentation. The graphics, animation, and overall tone are fantastic, and the music and sound design perhaps even more so.

Re: There's Trouble In Paradise As Nintendo Adds Loot Boxes To Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

@ACK Those are all interesting questions, and ones that warrant discussion in a more detailed manner. Choosing not to support a game with monetizing mechanics that preys on addiction-prone people is a different thing altogether in my opinion, and a much more simple matter.

For example: the discussion of violence in games has to take into account the artistic freedom of game makers. This case, conversely, has nothing to do with that, only with the business side of making games.

@tanookisuit It's an ethical thing. The way these gacha mechanics work, they rely on a few "whales" to spend ridiculous amounts of cash (think upwards of $1,000) on the game, while the vast majority never bother with the loot boxes. This is a supremely scummy practice, as it preys on people with gambling addiction problems.

A lot of people (rightfully) have a problem with that.
