Re: Opinion: It's Time To Get Rid Of Fall Damage

nessisonett

Truly bizarre article. All games are different, some need fall damage and some don’t. You’d have to completely design your game around a lack of fall damage to account for how much more difficult it is to gate areas from each other. I know that most journos have zero idea of how games are actually designed but this does sort of take the biscuit.

Re: EA Sports Games For Switch 2 "Are Being Built Specifically For The New Handheld"

nessisonett

I’m probably one of the few people who doesn’t see annual sports titles as disposable so any crumb of exclusive features for Switch 2 would be super cool. EA Sports’ output has become stale and homogenised really since Covid at the very latest in terms of features that outlive the online cycle, FC 24’s playstyles and this year’s roles are the only significant additions that span the whole game for example. I frequently return to the PS2 titles across the brand (and EA Sports BIG) because of the unique features and game modes that stretch beyond just a nostalgic snapshot of a specific year. NBA Live’s dunk contest was amazing back in those days, Tiger Woods 04 is arguably the greatest sports game of all time because of its unique features too. Rivalled by the PS3 titles solely because of modes like the Tiger Woods life story mode (minus the adultery) and I’ve been playing the history of golf mode from 14 that is absolutely absurdly impressive for a sports game, with accurate clubs from the 1900s and playable Bobby Jones and Old Tom Morris.

To be fair, it’s a games in general issue with shallow offline content being offered as you can’t sell extra compared to online modes having MTX but it’s the unique features of these sorts of games that make them cult classics, whether that’s MVP Baseball 05’s home run derby with obstacles or that one Wii FIFA game that turned it into a weird RPG. All I ask for is a bit of creativity, these games are made by so, so many people and teams that surely they can squeeze in interesting modes.

Re: Massive Civilization VII Update Detailed, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

nessisonett

@Overzeal That’s absolute madness. It’s a 4X game with a million different systems, tuning them based on player feedback should be applauded rather than this nonsense about the game not being finished. If this was 20 years ago then the balance issues would remain until the next £30 expansion instead of being patched, making balance patches paid content instead of free like is being delivered. I know this is a Nintendo site so not everyone actually plays strategy games unless they star underage girls but the general practice with these games pivoting towards free tweaks to gameplay to fine tune incredibly complicated systems is a good one and the community largely agrees.

Re: Massive Civilization VII Update Detailed, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

nessisonett

@Overzeal It’s 100% a full release. Back in the early 00s we got balance patches as part of paid expansions… which introduced their own problems that needed patching. This is literally better in every conceivable way. The only thing I’m not convinced by is the individual Civs, not even leaders, being sold instead of being part of packs.

Re: The Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4 Soundtrack Sounds Expectedly Rockin'

nessisonett

@somnambulance This is drop 1 of 3. There’s still room for songs to return. The only ones confirmed to not be back are the three Muskabeatz songs from 4.

Also people are insane for whining about rap songs being on the soundtrack considering 3 and 4 were 50/50 when it came to punk and hip hop. They’ve got Jeff Rosenstock and WAVVES added and they’ve added Kendrick and RTJ so it’s still as 50/50 as it’s always been.

Re: Inside Dev Threatens Legal Action Against Studio Co-Founder As "Bullying" Allegations Arise

nessisonett

@Chlocean Add Disco Elysium to the pile, another one ruined by corporate greed. Jury’s out on Celeste, something might materialise at some point. ConcernedApe will be making Stardew Valley until he’s dead and Silksong is vapourware. Part of the issue is that making something new isn’t guaranteed success, many indie devs rapidly expand after unexpected success and the only way out after that is economic constriction, downsizing then death or acquisition. Building from success to success is borderline impossible, no matter how many suits toot the ‘constant growth’ horn.

Re: Inside Dev Threatens Legal Action Against Studio Co-Founder As "Bullying" Allegations Arise

Indie devs and abusive behaviour, name a more iconic duo!

It’s almost like cults of personality and company abuses are much more common if there’s less of an internal structure and more of a ‘I am the auteur and you are my plebs’ setup going on. Personal grievances are amplified massively in devs like these too because you end up with founders claiming they’re the real genius and the other is just a money-grubbing charlatan.

Re: Civilization VII's First Major Update Marches Onto Switch, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

nessisonett

A bunch of good changes here. The game’s great but issues are more noticeable the more games you play.

@MegaMari0 I wouldn’t say it’s barebones at all, there’s honestly a lot of stuff there in the game. My main issue is the games feel a bit repetitive given what the AI prioritises and you can feel railroaded into a Culture Victory. The changes will turn it into a game on par with IV and V.

Re: Nintendo Confirms Removal Of Switch Online SNES Classic

nessisonett

@squidduforeal ….Microsoft and Sony provide a month in advance when they remove games from their services. This was removed with no warning. You’re talking hypotheticals when there’s demonstrable evidence that Nintendo have provided less warning or lead-up than other companies.

Re: Activision Teases Tony Hawk's Return In A New Update

nessisonett

5 absolute legends in one photo. Wonder who else will make it into this one? Basically all of the OGs apart from Daewon Song, Tony Alva, Mike V and a couple others who made it into the later games were missing from 1+2 but there’s a wealth of newer talent to encourage. I’d love to have Sky Brown just cause we need more Brits, and probably Andy Anderson even though freestyle skating doesn’t really suit the gameplay of THPS. Other picks would be Jaws (insane guy) and either Mark Appleyard (he was in Session tbf) or Ali Boulala (unlikely considering his retirement despite being in Skate 1) just to have another Flip guy from Sorry.

If the tips return from THPS4 then there’s one that talks about ‘almost’ only counting with horseshoes and Jamie Thomas or something to that effect, referring to him essentially landing the Leap of Faith but the board shattering in two. Well worth a watch!

Re: EA: Switch 2 Could Help Games Like FC And Madden "Find Real Energy"

nessisonett

@Medic_alert FC25 is DREADFUL. I actually quite liked last year’s game as well. This one… the defensive AI is an active hinderance, the player switching is messed up, passes are wildly inaccurate and your wingers aren’t fast enough even with 99 pace. It’s truly a bad game. They had a patch last month that made the game feel incredible to play and then it was instantly rolled back because the pros were finishing every match about 12-11 and that was ‘unrealistic’.
