Re: Mario And Zelda Modders Are Using Their Skills To Develop A New N64-Inspired Platformer

The level design itself looks really polished and fresh!

Not to downplay what these devs have done, but I think that's what's really appealing to me about the n64 era right now. It's achievable by small teams! So you know there is heart and soul poured into the game, and not just something off an assembly line.

My one nitpick here is I feel like the main character could use some, like... sunglasses... or guitar... or something to make him feel more iconic and like a player character instead of an NPC

@VoidofLight sometimes I wonder if Nintendo is completely aware of viral marketing and gave them a pass. Even as a kid waiting for Ocarina of Time, or a little older with the Revolution/Wii, the speculations and rumors would drive up the hype.

Come to think of it, the Wii U was the only time that didn't happen for me.

I'm finding my interest waning.

For the life of me, I can't seem to get one of my favorite Pokemon, Jolteon. I've only seen it in a wonder pack once, even.

Otherwise, it's really just a fun way to kill a few minutes, I'm having fun with trying different strategies for each type. But, it takes so long to get to that screen-- between the startup logos and other animations-- that I find myself not opening it.

@Bydlak It's funny, I've always felt the same way. I grew up starting with the NES and the N64/PSX era to me has aged awfully. It's like we went from beautiful 16-bit graphics, to this ugly blurry mess. And with the fog, it almost feels eerie.

However, I think the nostalgia has started to kick in over the past year. I don't know why but it just hits that sweet spot of "achievable". As-in, it's something I could make all on my own these days. There's something really wholesome about that and I start to really fall into it.

@JohnnyMind Glyph rendering is very straight forward, but also requires a lot of moving parts in the code. Throw in HLE, and my guess is that it's some parallel process throwing off either the index, or the page.

This is totally without looking at the code or anything. But just throwing the guess out there.

Re: Talking Point: What Is Nintendo Thinking Trying To Keep The Lid On This Playtest Program?

I don't know about this whole "free marketing" thing. Does Nintendo really need to do this? They have money coming out their goombas, and can sell an alarm clock like hotcakes with a YouTube video.

And I definitely don't think Nintendo is surprised by this at all.

My money is on the theory that Nintendo is just testing the waters for how to actually keep something like this under wraps. They're looking to see where the leaks happen, and building strategies on how they can prevent them in the future.

Re: Some Fans Aren't Happy About Sonic X Shadow Generations' Changes To The Original

A fun, random story about Shadow the Hedgehog I've learned from being the industry.

When the GameCube game was coming out, Sega was trying to market to the American audience. So they put together the cover featuring Shadow with guns. IIRC this is the Japanese cover art.

Their US marketing director knew right away that wasn't going to fly, so they setup a focus group of kids and them what kind of gun this Shadow version of Sonic should hold. In a typical 10-year-old American boy fashion, the immediate popular answer was "A BAZOOKA!!"

And this, folks, is why the cover of his debut game had him holding a bazooka.

@RupeeClock Ah sorry! I should have been more specific!

I was referring specifically to the step of making the variable names readable and/or adding comments and other documentation.

I frequently use copilot to help me with documentation, and sometimes coming up with variable names, and it's actually fairly good at it. I could see it working really well in something like this.
