Re: Amphie's First Pokémon Video Delves Into A Haunting Gold & Silver Memory

montrayjak

This was a fun watch!

My favorite Pokemon memory growing up? We were very poor growing up, so we just couldn't afford a Gameboy (let alone the batteries) — the family computer was powerful enough for emulators but it still wasn't the same.

I distinctly remember waking up in the morning one day and holding my hands out like I was holding a Gameboy. I wanted one so bad!

However, my older brother's friend randomly gave me one AND Pokemon Blue. No strings attached. I was ELATED.

(as for Pokemon Gold/Silver... I still only emulated those. Which was an odd experience considering the real time clock features.)

@Jayenkai why bother splitting up the colors with that method? You're basically describing a gaussian blur (+ some geometry) shader, which isn't ideal. In that case, you could just lower the output resolution to your TV.

CRT shaders get into how each subpixel blooms, how they fade and how they might affect each other. The perfect shader would know your display's subpixel layout and match them up, but that would require knowledge that the Switch just doesn't have access to. I've manually set it up on my 4K OLED TV with my Steam Deck, and it looked so good I felt like if I tapped on the TV I would get that "Thunk!" sound.

Here's a good resource if you're curious. The ones that stand out to me the most are Chrono Trigger, Sonic, and Conker.

Re: Random: Miyamoto Can't Talk About Switch 2, Talks About Switch 2 Anyway

@larryisaman I think that's a really interesting point/question. Given Nintendo's current trajectory with the Switch 2 — backward compatible carts, game share support, dev kits, firmware updates, etc. — can we still assume that they're going to cut off the Switch 1? I can honestly see them overlapping for a lot longer than we're used to.

@8bit-Man it is really interesting. We can only make guesses about Nintendo based on their history, but the one thing that has been most consistent with them is that they like to throw surprise punches. Along the lines of your thinking, it's also interesting that this is the first "2" that they've ever done. For all we know, Nintendo is trying to buck the trend somehow.

@Duncanballs sorry, I thought about it for a few minutes after I posted that and came to defeat my own argument. I thought I'd deleted my message in time.

But yeah, I can totally see that. It needed to be clear cut that it's a new system, not an expansion.

This is what I posted if anyone else is trying to follow:

Not to beat up a dead horse, but I still think his perspective on the Switch 2 being an expansion of the Switch 1 is why I would have gone with the name Super Switch or Switch DX or whatever.

This isn't a clear jump between generations. It's an expansion on the same idea, something that we haven't seen since NES -> SNES. And even more so now because we're not leaving Switch 1 players or devs/research/code behind.

The only thing "Switch 2" does is scratch the itch for following the tradition of getting a new generation.

(I'm not bitter or anything, I'm just making conversation.)

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Explains Why Donkey Kong Has Been Redesigned

My Nintendo-fu is failing because if you had asked me where this design came from, I would have said old DK arcade cabinets. I get this sort of Mandela effect feeling as soon as I see that this isn't the case. Something about the eyes just takes me back to that era.

For example: https://www.phoenixarcade.com/sites/default/files/dk-full.jpg

Maybe that's what Nintendo was going for, because they've definitely reclaimed the character.

Re: Opinion: Steam Deck Fans Are Seriously Underestimating The Switch 2

montrayjak

My SteamDeck's value comes from three things:

1. Being able to drop down to desktop mode with ease.
2. A virtually unlimited library. I have over 1000 Steam games accumulated since Steam's inception, and Epic gives out a game or two every week. Not to mention PC games are generally significantly cheaper which makes your argument about the Steam Deck being more expensive, incorrect.
3. I can customize every aspect of it to make it my perfect fit. From using any controller, to setting the theme.

The Switch is a more curated experience, and that's the real value in it for me. I could never play Splatoon or Mario on the Steam Deck... that would be gross.

Re: Best 4K TVs For Nintendo Switch 2

Looks like a few people disagree with me.

That's fine. rtings has been doing a burn-in test running static content for 7 years now and agrees with me with real-world usage. And those panels are from 7 years ago.

If you're really looking for comfort, LG generally has a pretty good warranty specifically for burn-in. (mine is 5 years)

Re: Best 4K TVs For Nintendo Switch 2

OLED burn-in is basically a thing of the past at this point. I wouldn't stress about it at all.

I calibrate my LG C1(OLED 4K 120hz) with a color meter every few months — to show you how picky I am — and I've never once noticed any sort of burn-in. I keep the brightness at 100% as well.

Re: Feature: "It's Huge For Us" - Devs Talk Switch 2 Reactions, Dev-Kit Disparity, Future Plans

It's feeling more and more like this really should have been called the Super Switch over the Switch 2. The developers seem excited about the improvements over the original Switch, but there doesn't seem to be anyone saying that it brings brand new ideas to the table.

I mean, this is perfect for me. I'm honestly pumped to get one. It's exactly what I've been wanting over the years. But still, I think it's missing a little of Nintendo's iconic "let's innovate with this wtf quirk" like a second screen on the back or something.

Re: Physical 'Switch 2 Editions' Confirmed To Have Everything On The Game Card, Says Nintendo

montrayjak

@Serpenterror That's what I'm hoping for!

So, for example, if I buy a BOTW:S2E cart for myself, then I can let my kid put the same cart into her hand-me-down Switch 1. Saves from buying 2 editions of the same game.

But that actually begs the question... if I play my profile on the Switch 1, will my save file transfer? I'm assuming not, because how would it reconcile the missing features?

Re: Japanese Retailer Is Asking The Public How To Combat Switch 2 Scalpers

montrayjak

I think most people would be happy to just put their name on a waitlist. Probably even pay for it ahead of time.

The real drive to go to a scalper is because they're typically setup to make a purchase before you might see an email notification that they're in stock. So your chances are zero. Take that out of the equation, and make a waitlist.
