Re: Feature: We Look To The Past To Predict Every First-Party 'Switch 2' Release Until 2029

montrayjak

The Switch's trajectory is pretty stable, there's no need to restart the engine.

I have a feeling that the Super Switch will have a "DX" upgrade path so that it doesn't have to launch with such a boom of titles, and instead be backwards compatible, avoiding remasters.

But some gimmick, even if it's just horsepower, will provide incentive to upgrade and play new games in more creative ways.

Re: Random: Sakurai Cut Dolby Surround From Kirby Game To Trim Player Wait Time

montrayjak

@NintonicGamer "Dolby Surround" was an audio algorithm used to cram surround sound over low storage and/or low bandwidth methods (e.g. over optical out, or even fitting 4-5 channels into the red/white stereo RCA jacks).

Nowadays, HDMI has enough bandwidth to just stream the source right to the receiver (e.g. linear PCM). And games generate audio on the fly, so no need for proprietary codecs.

Re: Video: Where Does Mario Kart Go From Here?

I've been playing MK8 since it released on the Wii U. It's my go-to when I need something uncomplicated in my life.

Unpopular opinion, but I honestly find most of the game to be balanced to perfection. When I get blue shelled at the finish line, it's a bit of randomness that I masochistically enjoy. The rubber banding doesn't even bother me that much. It means for every race, there's usually only one or two rivals and we can send each other back into the "pit" as punishment. And the anti-gravity is a nice mix-up both for dynamics in bumping into each other and visual variety.

That said, I wish there was more to unlock. Getting all 3-Star Gold Trophies is great but I have basically nothing to show for it. I'd be head over heels if there were something like Diddy Kong Racing with secret courses, bosses and collectables — even more so if I could co-op with my wife.

Re: Talking Point: Does Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Need A Full Remake?

montrayjak

@peachflavored I could see them re-releasing the 3DS version on the Switch successor if it had a mechanism for the second screen. (e.g. undocked, but TV mode was still active, like the WiiU).

I've always pictured a Super Switch to have some horsepower in the dock itself, and even upgrade-able, but the Switch itself was still portable. Additionally, having the capability to wirelessly transmit video from the Switch in some sort of dual screen mode. The tech is all available, though it would be no small task handling mode swapping seamlessly, but it would allow some backwards compatibility with the DS/3DS/WiiU libraries.

Re: Soapbox: FOMO Nearly Ruined Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom For Me

montrayjak

@Bobb same thing happened to me! I got about 150hrs in before I took a breath to slow down...

I remember a specific moment of being upset after playing non-stop for like two weeks, just rushing to see everything before it was spoiled somewhere on the net — and then seeing a headline on this site which spoiled some content for me. I was devastated. This wasn't nearly as bad as Kotaku just straight up spamming me with spoiler screenshots / headlines in the Google Newsfeed.

I was/am self-aware of how childish I was being, but I really wanted to experience this adventure alone — I've waited my entire life for an experience like this. And life was really tough for me at the moment, so it was my escape being crushed.

I'm well past where I think a majority of players have made it by now, so I stopped (literally) squinting when I browse this site and I've felt comfortable slowing down and just enjoying the scenery in the game for a few sessions. I have no regrets though, I was genuinely surprised by some of the mechanics (and still come across new ones!) and they're wonderful memories that I'll have for life. But still, I've blocked Kotaku from every feed I have.

Re: Random: Forget The Wii U, This Coder Got Mario Vs. Donkey Kong Running In A Web Browser

montrayjak

We were approached by Nintendo to use this framework to bring our game Happy Friday! to the Wii U, and we were all set to, but the API was slightly too limited.

However, I think a lot of people would be surprised at how many games are written in HTML/JS, like CrossCode and Duelyst. It's one of the most advanced rendering engines on the planet, just not necessarily a pipeline for games. So if your game isn't trying to break new grounds in graphics, then you can make serious gains in the UI department with relative ease (Which is perfect in a game like Mario vs. Donkey Kong).

Re: Deals: Incredibly, These Zelda And Metroid amiibo Are Down To Just $5 Right Now

montrayjak

As a long-time Amiibo collector, I think this spells that the Metroid 2-pack will become valuable.

Zelda will likely have a reprint, but with most of the other franchises once the Amiibo goes on a discount, then it means that it's not selling very many. In a few years time, it'll be the one that nobody bought. Same thing happened with my Gold Megaman and Mega Yarn Yoshi

Re: Video: Let's Discuss The Super Mario Bros. Movie

@Chaotic_Neutral Man, this movie is absolutely action packed from start to finish so just be prepared for a bit of sensory overload there. However, the visuals and music were fantastic so if you're cool with the action you're in for a fun time!

Re: Movie Review: Tetris - The Blocks Don't Quite Line Up In This Mostly Fun Thriller

montrayjak

I'm surprised to see it scoring so low. I really enjoyed it! The sound track was fantastic, the writing was on point, and the visuals were very well executed — I was a little worried that they might dig too far into the augmented world stuff. Yeah, there was some dramatization going on and some compression, but that's the point of a movie. GH already did the comprehensive version of the facts.

I'd give it an 8 or 9, personally.

Re: Mario Movie Release Date Brought Forward For US And Others

montrayjak

@MSaturn to be totally honest, I thought they've been shifting it weeks not days, which totally invalidates my point. For some reason I thought it was previously in mid-March. I messed up there.... super embarrassing.

Your point is very valid. They do move movies to Wednesdays for blockbusters because it still counts as opening weekend to boost those "opening weekend" box-office numbers.

Re: Mario Movie Release Date Brought Forward For US And Others

montrayjak

I've been involved in the movie industry and have some experience with how launches work. At the very, very least there's typically a preview for theater owners to see movies a few months ahead of time for negotiation purposes (how long they'll keep the movie for, and what cut of ticket prices they'll take, etc).

Granted, March/April are generally pretty open, but release dates are even negotiated between studios to make sure any overlap between blockbusters is to an advantage (e.g. action titles paired with romance). So for them to change dates around so close to release is really, really strange and could mean one of two things:

1) Nintendo/Illumination have a LOT of pull and want to make adjustments before public release.
2) They're trying to simship, but are struggling to get everyone to line up. Maybe Nintendo is taking too much of the cut, or maybe there's greater politics at play.

Considering how much power Nintendo and Illumination have together, my guess is 1.

Re: Random: Metroid Prime Software Code Was Used To Render In-Game Effect

montrayjak

Ah cool! Yar's Revenge used the same technique for the static in the Neutral Zone. The 2600 wasn't big enough to fit something like that in, so the programmer, Howard Scott Warshaw, rendered the game's code.

He had a confrontation with Atari over it because they felt it was a copyright violation for showing the code on the screen. He essentially said it was obscured enough, and if someone could get code from that then they deserved it!
