Re: Random: Metroid Prime Software Code Was Used To Render In-Game Effect

montrayjak

Ah cool! Yar's Revenge used the same technique for the static in the Neutral Zone. The 2600 wasn't big enough to fit something like that in, so the programmer, Howard Scott Warshaw, rendered the game's code.

He had a confrontation with Atari over it because they felt it was a copyright violation for showing the code on the screen. He essentially said it was obscured enough, and if someone could get code from that then they deserved it!

Re: GoldenEye 007 Is Returning To Nintendo Switch

@john_lennon999 According to the official blog, the remastered version is coming to the Switch too... but it's confusing because they say updated 4k visuals, yet the Switch doesn't do 4k.... or will it!?

(From the official 007 blog)
>As first announced during the latest Nintendo Direct broadcast, a 4K resolution remaster of the Nintendo 64 classic is coming soon to the console’s Nintendo 64 – Nintendo Switch Online service. Microsoft also confirmed the news of GoldenEye 007’s port to the Xbox’s Game Pass today (September 13).

Re: We Might Get A Brand New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Game In 2023

Open map TMNT — similar to GTA/Lego City Undercover.

You patrol The Big Apple and go on various missions to fight crime. Your home base is in the sewers, accessible from any manhole, which also lets you jump between locations. Co-op with up to 4 players, one for each turtle. You can learn new skills at various points from Master Splinter which allow you to explore the map even further. Side missions include collectable scavenger hunts and pizza deliveries — much to their chagrin, but turtles still need money to buy their own pizza and upgrade the Party Wagon (Turtle Van)!

An overarching storyline emerges in an early mission when you get word that Shredder and Krang have plans to open an interdimensional portal. It's the job of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to make sure that doesn't happen.

#13, about the realism in the levels and empty rooms. This was especially important back in the day. Games generally weren't open ended like this so being able to explore even more than intended was HUGE and insanely fun back then.

I remember the secret island at the dam being such a find back then. And all the rumors surrounding it. Honestly, that place could have made it to the list as well.

Re: Talking Point: What's The Highlight Of Your Game Collection?

My (almost) complete Amiibo collection, or maybe my Game and Watch collection. The G&W hit a special place in my heart being able to see the origins of game design from such a humble beginning, but the Amiibo collection comes from all of the "amiibo hunting" memories me and my now wife share.

@Anti-Matter hey I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean to offend anyone or even diss the Harvest Moon games. I grew up playing Harvest Moon for SNES and N64 until it started to go that route and it just felt very out of place for me as a long-time fan — it felt to me more like they were trying to cash grab on being "cute" than focusing on being a solid game.

FWIW, as a teenager I was pretty upset about Wind Waker being "kiddy" as well, even though it's one of my favorites looking back at it.

Re: Soapbox: 20 Years Later, Super Mario Sunshine Is Still The Best 3D Mario

I enjoyed the theme and the mechanics, but the physics killed it for me. It all felt like it needed some more time in development. Even Yoshi's animations felt underdeveloped.

Playing it on 3D All Stars gave me some appreciation for the evolution of the 3D Mario games. Mario 64 was rough but it was their first attempt at 3D platforming. Sunshine just felt frustrating not knowing when something would bug out. Galaxy was a breath of fresh air and everything just felt so fluid.

Re: Zelda: Ocarina Of Time PC Port Can Now Be Played On Mac OS and Wii U

Yeah but can we finally obtain the Triforce by swimming to the bottom of Zora's domain and into the hole as adult Link, then spinning around the tree in Kakariko Village 64 times, then waiting until nightfall to talk to Rauru where he opens the beta levels? I saw a photo of the Triforce in beta screenshots in a Japanese magazine so I know it's there...

Re: Nintendo Admits It Released A New Model Of The Switch To Fight Piracy

Nintendo: Releases a flawed system.

Hacker: Finds flaw and releases the info publicly.

Nintendo: Ugh! This guy made us change everything!

... I'm sure if Bowser didn't find the flaw, someone else would have. This is how the internet works. You can't just throw the law at something that requires engineering. They're lucky someone didn't use it for something worse, like a worm virus.

Re: Digital Foundry Reiterates That, No, Breath Of The Wild 2 Is "Not Too Big For Switch"

@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed I'm still thinking Pokémon Arceus was meant to be running on a Switch Pro, as a system seller. But once the chip shortage hit, they put Pro model on hold, still moved forward with the OLED screens because of business agreements, and Pokémon was dialed back to fit.

So yeah, I agree that by next year, if things get back to normal, it would fit we'll get some sort of new model.

Re: Talking Point: Is It Ever A Good Idea To Start At 'The Beginning' Of Series Like Zelda Or Dragon Quest?

montrayjak

I recently dove into the Dragon Quest series for the first time and decided to play the SNES remakes. Honestly, it wasn't that much of a grindfest. I'd heard they tweaked some things to make them more palatable (even the SNES era folks thought the original was too grindy). Also, I beat the first game in about 8 hours so it wasn't that much of a commitment.

For Zelda, I recently started from the beginning, Zelda 1, on Master Quest. Honestly, I don't remember ever beating the MQ so I wanted to relive the experience of playing Zelda 1 for the first time. It was pretty brutal for difficulty but it really only took a few nights and I actually really enjoyed that I had to explore the game without a guide. But maybe I'm a weirdo on this one.

Next up is Metroid. I'll probably start with the NES Classic and work my way to the SNES Classic, then to the Wii Trilogy.

Re: Chex Quest HD Exists, And It's Getting A Switch Port This March

Yessssssss. I loved this game as a kid. I used to play it on the family PC as a kid with my siblings. I have played the new one on Steam and it holds up to my memories. To be totally honest here, don't expect anything other than a basic shooter with loads of secrets, but I still love it.

Definitely grabbing this on the Switch!
