There's something quite satisfying about owning a particularly rare video game, isn't there? Not so much in the sense that you can brag to your friends about owning something they couldn't possibly hope to get their hands on; no, that's quite insufferable, if you ask us. Rather, the idea of owning something valuable and precious, taking the effort to look after it and keep it in good condition is a wholly different story.
We'd be willing to bet that quite a few of you lovely readers probably own a rare video game or a rare piece of merchandise of some sort. We'd also be willing to bet that most of you would much rather keep hold of such an item for as long as possible, regardless of its potential value. After all, owning something of such prestige from a beloved IP means something, right? It makes us feel connected to a franchise we love in a way that's particularly difficult to replicate.
What if you owned a video game that was so rare, however, that you could never actually play it, regardless or whether or not you actually intended to? Our handsome, charming video producer Alex has first hand experience of this, as he owns the incredibly rare Kyojin no Doshin (Doshin the Giant) for the 64DD peripheral. Since both the 64DD and the game itself were only released in Japan, their general availability is quite limited, to say the least.
So check out the video below where Alex showcases Kyojin no Doshin itself and laments at the highly unlikely prospect of ever playing it. What's particularly interesting is the game's bizarre box art; there's very little that actually signifies that it's Doshin the Giant, apart from a very tiny image that gives the game away.

I own Doshin the Giant on Gamecube, grear game!
Yep. Bought Ikagura Hypergun Edition on clearance and put it on my backlog. Now that game is going for $300 on Ebay, and I can't bring myself to open it.
I own a sealed copy of Tengen Tetris for the NES. Considering how it got pulled from shelves and the cool history behind it I couldn’t justify opening it up. How many sealed copies are actually left?
I have Ikaruga on GameCube still sealed.
Bought it digitally elsewhere and never ended up opening it
Also have Odama Big Box sealed and a few others.
I also have Zelda Four swords Australian Big Box edition sealed.
At least my kids can gain from my inability to open them.
I got Yokai Watch 3 Tempura 3DS, Ratchet & Clank Trilogy PS3, Starfox Adventures Gamecube, Hakuna Matata (Asia English version) PS3 with very cheap price from my local online shopping website in Indonesia.
Oh, I played those games, not for being displayed only.
I own Little Samson, Castlevania Vampire's Kiss, nearly all Virtual Boy games, the Pokemon mini nearly complete library... But i play them all, i don't give a damn. I am a collector, but i collect to play.
I have Rockman Battle & Fighters for NEOGEO Pocket Color in excellent condition with all inserts. When I saw it going for over £200 on eBay I sealed it in a plastic bag and put it away. I don't ever sell my old games, but I never actually play this one, so I may have to cash in and spend the money on even more games!
I suppose you could argue why bother owning something that doesn’t get used for it’s intended purpose?
I own the expension to Doshin the Giant on 64DD, it's waaaay rarer than the base game.
i've got PSO 1+2 for gamecube, but that's unplayable because i got it really rough secondhand...
I got the Breath of the Wild limited edition with the Master Sword figurine. Never opened because I played the game on my Wii U.
Don't think I'll ever open it.
When it comes to games, I'm not sure which one would qualify. I don't have anything sealed except for apparently a copy of SiNG Party for the Wii U. Other than that the only thing sealed I have is my Light Blue Yarn Yoshi amiibo which came in bundle with Yoshi's Woolly World.
EDIT: Now I got both versions of the Bayonetta amiibo sealed. My plan is to open the Player 1 version (the one with shorter hair and blue accents from Bayonetta 2), as I originally intended, and keep sealed the Player 2 version (with long hair and red accents from the original). Though I'm tempted to open that one as well. I don't like the pose in the render, but on the amiibo it looks great.
I own a regular Breath of the Wild cartridge. It's so popular (and long) that it's always at the back of my backlog and i can never actually play it.
I've got a sealed copy of Mega Man on Game Gear. It has taken every bit of restraint I have not to open and play it over the years. I have a complete copy of Bonk's Adventure for the NES that I probably wont take out of its protective sleeve again too.
I own the original Japan-only Pokémon Stadium, that I can’t play as I don’t have a Japanese N64, but I have rarer games than that that I can play, like Virtual Boy games etc.
All of these people should watch toy story 2. Toys/games are meant to be played. If you actually want to play something you own, then do it.
I bought my kids a coupe Mario action figure sets, castles, a bunch of stuff, like $300 worth, a gigantic Metroid etc…. The guys at the store could not believe I was going to take the toys out of the box and let my kids use them. They be crying to see how a 5 and 3 year old play with toys.
Mine is not a game, but a book. I have the faux-leatherbound version of Hyrule Historia with the gold gilded edges, still wrapped in plastic. I spent extra money on the regular green cover just to be able to see what's inside.
Apparently one guy bought up as many copies as he could so he'd artificially control the availability and market price. That guy sucks, and I detest that kind of behavior. But my little book is even more rare now because of that jerk
PAL castlevania symphony of the night on PS1. Bought the PSP port to not have to use my ps1 disc but that one is expensive now too.
I have a LOT of incredibly rare & valuable games. I’ve considered selling them, especially the deluxe editions with all the cool accessories they came with but what happens when you sell a rare game? You get some money, and you spend it on something else, and the whole experience is just gone and forgotten. So if it’s a good game and I like it, I’m just going to enjoy having it and playing it…. who cares if it’s worth a fortune! Life is too short to not enjoy the good things we have! ❤️
Capitalism in a nutshell. Owning something but never using it, when someone out there could get a lot of enjoyment out of it.
That being said I have the limited edition Link’s Awakening for Switch sat on my shelf because the original holds a lot of precious childhood memories.
@Pawsebutton dude don’t open it! That game is crazy rare. I own just the cartridge and it’s a solid game but not worth opening one of very few sealed copies left
Nah. Games are supposed to be played. I don't buy something if I will not use it, as then it's just wasted shelf space.
I don't mind collectors, but I kind of dislike those collectors that buy stuff only for the monetary value.
Some other Nintendo highlights from my collection are:
I own every game Atlus has ever published in North America (not just Nintendo, I’ll never have the time to play all of them)
This includes a pristine CIB copy of Jack Bros for Virtual Boy (I have a Virtual Boy and played it, great game)
NCAA Basketball 2k3 for GameCube (wasn’t suppose to be released)
Seattle Mariners DS Lite (Nintendo owned the Mariners and released a stadium exclusive DS Lite you could also use at the stadium to order food and drinks)
I don't know how rare, but I have in the wrapper a copy of Soul Calubur for Asian dreamcast. Language in Japanese.
I can’t say I own any games that rare. I did sell my entire lot of GameCube games over a year ago and got close to 3 grand for them. GameCube games in general go for crazy high prices these days. I remember hearing about doshin back in the day. I thought a GameCube version was in the works but never made it here.
I have some expensive games, but I only collect to play. If I haven't played something yet, I eventually will. I don't like the idea of a game just sitting there, I'd rather experience it and get at least one use out of it.
@jrt87
why didnt you sell the sealed games and buy used copies of the ones you wanted to play?
I guess for me, the only time that comes up is if an old rare game gets a digital release. I would then play the digital one instead and keep the original in storage. Earthbound, for example.
Any rare games I’ve owned were bought when they were readily available and I played the hell out of them. I sold a lot of my dusty stuff last year including the gameboy advance Metroids and Castlevanias, PS1 Silent Hill, and a bunch of others.
I have some hard-ish to find books I’ve been collecting this year. The original paperbacks of Michael Moorcock’s eternal champion books of Elric, Corum, Erekose, and Hawkmoon have set me back a bit. Plus I’ve bought more than one version of some of them to have the various beautiful cover artwork. The main reason I wanted them, though, was because the stories are so wonderful that they deserved to be read on paper and not a ripped pdf.
I’m now in possession of a first edition hardcover 1965 copy of Stormbringer in excellent condition, inscribed and signed by the author. Considering his age and the way things are now I don’t see him doing any events anytime soon, and I like to think about how this copy he had his hands on so many years ago somehow passed through people and places and time to me.
No because that is beyond stupid. Games are meant to be played, not looked at.
Both Fire Emblem Fates titles will become rare by the time they reach my backlog line to be played.
Hah, I’ve accumulated a few valuable games over the years but don’t really have this “unplayable” concern because nothing I buy stays shrinkwrapped for long. I buy the games to play, you know, not as an investment.
Same thing for other RARE collectibles like comics.
I guess I’m one of those simpletons that the Square-Enix president hates - someone who just likes to play games for fun! 😁
@eltomo Thats soo cool.
I've got quite a few sealed games on Wii, WiiU, Switch, 3DS, PlayStation 2/3 but probably the most expensive if not rare in my collection is Shining Force CD for Sega CD.
@XE77 Awesome!! That one is on my list to get someday!
Oddly enough my rarest game is on the 3ds, Senran Kagura 2 Deep Crimson EU.
But I just recently replayed it, knowing full well how rare and expensive it is (aka I don't care)
As for my other rare games that are less rare than that one, plenty of Vita games I played through the years, games I had sealed and that were worth a pretty penny because of that, but which I took the seal off because I got them to play them.
I wouldn't say I own any particularly rare games but I can't play my old heroes of might and magic game because my new laptop doesn't have a cd drive. I think in a drawer somewhere there may even be some games on floppy disk.
@FishyS I love the Heroes of Might and Magic series. I would strongly encourage you to visit GOG.Com The entire Heroes series is available to purchase and download there. They are inexpensive and configured to work on modern PC's. Me and my wife play through parts 3 and 5 all the time.
I don't really keep up with game prices, but I'm pretty sure I don't have anything that rare. I bought EarthBound when it came out, but it's not -that- rare. And the strategy guide isn't in great shape anymore.
I used to have a sealed copy of Twilight Princess for GameCube, but I opened it so I could play it :0
I have a used copy of Mario kart 8 deluxe for the switch xx
@Oppyz666 I loved Little Samson, such a good game. I always wondered why they never made a sequel or more with the franchise, it had a lot of potential.
Is it still a video game if it is never played?
I've got a few rare games. I'm not going to let their rarity value stop me playing them. I will, however, let the annoyance of having to set up the hardware stop me, and I'll play the PSN version of Suikoden II rather than the disc.
I have all three scenarios of Shining Force III on Sega Saturn, plus the ultra-rare premium disc. I played through the first several times back in the day, but sadly I never finished any of the others because I didn't have the Japanese skills at the time. I suppose I could try now, but the lack of modern conveniences like being able to take them on the train or put the console in sleep mode sounds painful.
Besides owning a complete PAL copy of Vib-Ribbon on PS1, I don’t see myself getting my hands on any rare game as they are too dang expensive and I just wanna play them (looking at you, Castlevania SOTN)
My GameCube and N64 list is insurmountable.
Gacha Force - $500
Doshin the Giant - $200
Cubivore - $400
Go Go Hypergrind - $400
Ogre Battle 64 - $500
Worms Armageddon - $600
The list can go on and on. The N64 and GCN was my heyday of collecting.
Does Skylanders Giants on 3DS count as rare? Lol
@Paraka Awesome!!
I’ve got Panzer Dragoon Saga and an imported version of Radiant Silvergun on the Saturn.
Also not quite there yet but Fire Emblem Fate Revelations on a cart. When the Eshop closes I’m sure it’ll be especially rare.
I play my rare games. I’m not trying to preserve them for centuries, you can expect a little dust or skin oil to get on games. I have played my copy of Kirby’s Super Star Stacker (SFC), but it spends most of its time inside its original plastic sleeve.
Last weekend I accidentally deleted Ys Oath of Felgania off my PSP memory stick. After I looked at what the price was for a physical copy, I spent the rest of the weekend trying to get it back. The psp would not let me download my backup copy from my PS3, and the psp was too primitive for my modem. It took me having to use my mobile phone as a hot spot, having to reset my psp password most 27 times, and then re-download it from the store at dial-up speeds, and thankfully I got it back.
This could be the future of all e-shop games.
I have Gimmick for the PAL B NES and Shantae for the GBC. I've played both. shrug
I dunno what counts as too rare.
@Drew250 I think you’re confusing capitalism with hoarding.
@dustinprewitt You can still easily (and cheaply!) obtain that game off GOG and Steam.
I have nothing really rare but I have some mint games that I prefer not to play because of what they mean to me: my US copy of Super Metroid and the JP DKC trilogy. Everything else I have is to be played or sold
I have two boxed copies of Castlevania Legends. A Kid Klown for nes a near complete Vectrex set etc etc
I don't own anything particularly rare. I think the rarest game I own is Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete for PS1. Nothing too valuable for Nintendo systems, though I still have my Pokémon games from GB to GBA and those can be a little pricy, I've noticed.
I have Ganbare Goemon: Karakuri Douchuu for the MSX2. I don't think I will ever have an MSX2... But gotta have all Goemon games, so... yeah. This is also one of the rarest, and most expensive games in the franchise.
I think the rarest thing I have is a CIB Sega CDX unit. But it was already opened. I don't have anything sealed that is also super rare.
@Cowboysfan-22 I got an Everdrive GG a few years just to play the game and keep from opening it! Also, super envious of that copy of Cubivore! I saw a whole stack of them in Wal-Mart for $12 each years ago...and walked right past them.
No. Personally, I buy games to play them, not to sell them… as foolish a missed capitalistic opportunity that may be sometimes ¯(ツ)/¯
Happy Gaming Everyone!
If it is really rare you can still sell it for a good amount. The sealed market is a bit loony and rigged in many ways.
@Cowboysfan-22 is it factory sealed or re-sealed. If factory wow you’ve got a beauty there!
I used to have a “complete” version and that was rare enough without being sealed!
@datamonkey It’s factory sealed. I had a buddy of mine who is much more knowledgeable when it comes to that stuff check it out and we researched it to make sure. It’s one of my favorite pieces of my collection for sure
@Pawsebutton it’s insane how much that one has gone up. I got mine when it was about $100. I remember seeing it on the shelf of an Electronic Boutique (now GameStop) when I was a kid and remember thinking how silly it looked. Didn’t know I was staring at a rare one
Hehehe nice! I have doshin the giant on GameCube, classic game!
Also have original release of animal crossing and paper Mario which is a import from America too!
Some notable games that I own are Little Samson, Snow Bros, and Bonk's Adventure for NES. As well Earthbound, Dracula X and Hagane for SNES.
And I have a complete in box collection of every single Mega Man game released in North America on all platforms.
I'm a player/collector, so I play every single one of these games without ever thinking twice about it. If they eventually break/stop functioning, I'll have more memories having played them than having them sit in a plastic tub somewhere collecting dust.
The rarest game I own is Cubivore for the GameCube and I’ve played it already. I wouldn’t have any problems playing it again if I wanted to.
@BloodNinja I have neither of those... but it's still good to know that if worst comes to worst, then not all hope is lost
Nah, I play all my games.
Having been a gamer for 35 years, I recently started selling off games that I know I won't play again, including donating the cheapies (cough ... Wii). As I was inventorying my collection, one of my few wrapped games that I just never got around to playing is 'Space Station Silicon Valley' on N64. It still has the K-B Toys $19.99 sticker. Apparently sealed it is now worth $400. I didn't intentionally not play it, just worked out that way.
I don't have anything that would be considered truly rare, not that my small collection is worthless. Nothing I have is sealed unless it's a newer game that I haven't gotten around to opening yet.
I had a Disaster Report on PS2 sealed and sold it since it was worth something. I was never going to play it so why keep it. I think that qualifies as playing games I own if I get rid of ones I have no intention of playing.
I would never send anything to be slabbed and graded though. That's a coffin for some rich investor's bookshelf.
@Donutman That's a great story. So many "toys" nowadays are made for collectors to sit on a shelf. And that's fine but in your case you're talking about a new LEGO set. That is not on the same level as a collectible action figure.
@jorel262 they were not Lego sets, action figure castle play sets. Either way, they are all toys and would only be purchased to play with. one for example…

I own two sealed copies of Harvest Moon 64, which goes for about $700 sealed if it's not WATA graded. WATA-graded copies list in the thousands, though I doubt anyone is getting that price.
No, if I am buying a game, I intend on playing the game.
I actually made a very good video onSealed Games that i never play .. or do i ? Dont diss it because this is a link in a comment lol will be the best 20 minutes you will watch all week. Prove me wrong

I don't have anything really rare, but I have one thing that's rare I want... Doshin The Giant 2!
When they released Darksiders Warmastered Edition on the Wii U months after BotW and the Switch came out, effectively making it the final 'big' release the console ever saw (and one that didn't make any sense), I thought it would become a rare collector's item, especially since they announced only a few thousand copies would be made. So I still have one factory sealed. But it seems that five years later, this game is still available on eBay for dirt cheap, so I suppose I thought wrong. Either that, or I'll have to play the waiting game for much, much longer.
Sealed copies of Suikoden 3 and Killer7 PS2 discs. Got the Steam Version of K7 and Emulated Suikoden 3 but seemed to have a bit of slow down in the bigger and more populated areas.
I own EVO and Harvest Moon for SNES. I still play them tho, cause THATS THE POINT
Still have a lot of stuff from when I collected, including many rare games like Cubivore, Conker's Bad Fur Day near mint,... lots of great games from the cardboard box and manual times, but also many pricey games from past that time. Lots of beautiful collector's editions as well, a near perfect Zelda collection,... But I'm torn between not really caring anymore, and starting to care again when going through it considering selling most of it. And I don't want to put too much time in it, but also not just give it away of course. But leaving it alone is also not helping anyone. Now, a lot of my most valued games aren't my most pricey games or merchandise (I also have an exclusive Phazon Suit Samus statue from F4F still, among others, that I could easily part from actually). My most precious are some Gamecube and PS2 games, GBA, DS, WII,... but not necessarily the ones I could sell for the most.
If I think about what I value the most, it's more like Link's Awakening, Boktai, Drill Dozer, Warioware Twisted, Minish Cap, Advance Wars, Golden Sun, Contact, Dementium 2, Killer 7, Eternal Darkness, Fragile Dreams, Calling,... And many more. The coolest, weirdest games that I played when they were released, or wanted at that time and later found or imported, and were hard to find because nobody cared at the time of their release. And my Zelda collection obviously, especially all the mint complete cartridge based games, especially on Game Boys. And even some Switch games (because manuals, indie physical releases,... nowadays make a game more special).
I guess the rarest game in my collection is F-Zero X Expansion Kit for N64DD. It's such a shame this gem with an awesome 3D track editor was never released in the west and propably never will. But hey, emulators, am I right?
I have a mint CIB with inserts copy of Cubivore on the gamecube.
The disc was fine but my gamecube kinda added some linear scratches no it so it's not perfect anymore (it still works though)
Learned the lesson so now it's just on the shelf as display...
I did play it though via a modded wii 😜 Great game!
Miracle Piano for SNES
Not the flashiest of examples, but the closest I get to owning a rare game is Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance on the GameCube. The game's price seems to be growing since there weren't many releases outside Japan.
