The Nintendo Switch has fast become the best way to play Japanese role-playing games over its five-year lifespan. Truly, fans of games with deep battle systems, endearing characters, convoluted (and often nonsensical) plots, and fantastical worlds to save are spoiled for choice. From the expansive exploration and real-time combat seen in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, to the depth seen in Shin Megami Tensei V’s difficult turn-based battles, there’s no shortage of monsters to slay year after year.
But what of JRPGs of previous generations – the games that inspired these substantial adventures? The Nintendo Switch has amassed an impressive collection of classic titles, most recently adding Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition to its growing vault.
There are, however, many classic JRPGs missing – from Mother 3 to Suikoden II – like great tomes absent from the shelves of an ancient library. We've chosen 10 of these masterpieces and sleuthed through their histories to determine the chances of them making their way onto the Nintendo Switch. You'll find poll at the bottom to let us know which ones you'd most like to see on Switch, too.
Got your big sword? Great — let's proceed alphabetically, shall we?
Chrono Trigger (SNES)

Sorry Final Fantasy VII fans – in our humble opinion, Chrono Trigger is the best JRPG (we already got FFVII anyway), and it's also the most obvious contender to make it to the Nintendo Switch.
Since its debut in 1995 on the SNES, Chrono Trigger has found homes on a wide array of systems, including the original PlayStation, smartphones, PCs, and both the Wii Virtual Console and Nintendo DS. Many regard the 2008 DS version as the best as it came paired with a handful of quality of life features and added content that better linked the perennial classic to Chrono Cross.
It's arguably only a matter of time before Chrono Trigger makes an appearance on Switch. In fact, many were surprised that Trigger’s sequel debuted on Switch first, though this perhaps worked out for the best. The real question is which form Chrono Trigger will take: will a port of the SNES version make its way to Nintendo Switch Online? Will we see a remaster akin to the Nintendo DS version? Or – dare we dream – a full-blown remake? Since our Epoch is in the shop, we unfortunately can’t skip ahead in time and find out.
Probability: Very Likely
Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA)

While more of a strategy role-playing game than a JRPG, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance was an early release for the Game Boy Advance and heralded the return of a symbiotic relationship between Square (now Square Enix) and Nintendo after the developer jumped ship for the PlayStation years prior. The spinoff of the renowned Final Fantasy Tactics, which never made its way to a Nintendo console, was a meaty, colourful adventure that deserves every bit of praise.
With the success of Triangle Strategy — a recent title that draws direct inspiration from the Tactics games and shares a developer – and prior rumours that the original Final Fantasy Tactics might get a remaster, we don’t think it's a stretch to assume Tactics Advance will pop up on Switch one day – maybe in a Tactics collection similar to the Collection of Mana.
Probability: Likely
Golden Sun (GBA)
You want it. We want it. Everyone wants it – so where is it?
Golden Sun, Camelot’s masterpiece for the GBA, holds a special place in many Nintendo fans’ hearts. Which is unfortunate because Camelot appears quite ambivalent toward the series. Since the 2010 release of Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, Camelot has focused on Mario-themed sports titles, the most recent of which was the well-received Mario Golf: Super Rush. And while we enjoy playing tennis and golf with our favourite moustachioed plumber, we’d much prefer more Golden Sun.
If we had to guess, Golden Sun would definitely come to Nintendo Switch Online if the service began offering GBA titles. After all, it did make it to the Wii U eShop. Currently, there are credible rumours that Game Boy and Game Boy Color games are on their way, and the recent leak of a Nintendo-developed GBA emulator for Switch suggests that we may be seeing vintage handheld games return before too long, and while the list of titles supposedly tested doesn't mean it will show up, Golden Sun and its sequel were both on the test list.
It’s a toss up, then. Like Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, there’s a chance Camelot might remaster the games. There is, however, no rumour of that, yet Camelot has a strong partnership with Nintendo spanning two decades. If GBA games are indeed coming to Switch, that could be the perfect avenue for a re-release.
Probability: Possibly
Mother 3 (GBA)
Despite the former Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aimé trolling fans about the existence of an English version of Mother 3, we still haven’t got an official release of the third entry to the Earthbound series outside of Japan. It’s become almost pure meme at this point: every Nintendo Direct someone quips that they’ll announce Mother 3 this time around, whether in a livestream chat or an article on this very website, to the point where we’re all getting a little tired of it.
Hopes for Mother 3 were ignited back in February when it was announced Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings were making their way to Nintendo Switch Online. Giving these two titles a Nintendo Direct spotlight proves Nintendo hasn’t forgotten about Ness and Lucas. The producer of Mother 3 fanned the flames of hope further by saying he would love to see Mother 3 get a worldwide release. And with these recent whispers of GBA games coming to Nintendo Switch Online, this one would surely top the list of fan requests.
We’re going to make a wild prediction here and say that yes – someday – Mother 3 will make its way to Nintendo Switch so we can finally put the constant speculation to rest. Don’t laugh, please.
Probability: Likely
Panzer Dragoon Saga (Sega Saturn)
The Sega Saturn’s dragon-riding cult classic seemed destined for obscurity. Released at a time when Sega was shifting focus to the Dreamcast, Panzer Dragoon Saga failed to gain a foothold with Western audiences, and as a result, most haven’t played what was an extremely well-reviewed action-adventure game steeped in JRPG elements, leading to there being an insubstantial audience for any re-release to seem possible. In fact, the original source code for the game seemed lost until 2016.
If any JRPG on this list deserves a remaster, it's Saga. Other titles in the Panzer Dragoon series, which are rail-shooters, have made their way or are making their way to the Switch. In 2020 a remake of the original received lukewarm reviews when it flew onto the eShop (although it has improved since launch), and the remake of the second title, Panzer Dragoon II Zwei, seems lost in the ether after missing its 2021 release. If the second title does release and if it finds success, it seems natural that Saga would soon follow. But those are two big 'ifs'.
Probability: Unlikely
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GCN)

Of all games on this list, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door wins the award for most whimsical. It’s a shame, then, that Nintendo skipped re-releasing TTYD for the Wii and the Wii U. And it’s a further shame that the Paper Mario series has abandoned its JRPG roots, opting for an almost puzzle game-like (and arguably superfluous) battle system for 2020’s Paper Mario: The Origami King.
The original Paper Mario popped up as a title for the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion pack, and while Nintendo’s porting of GameCube games to the Switch has been sporadic at best, we expect The Thousand-Year Door to someday satisfy our hankering for deep papyraceous turn-based battles.
Probability: Likely
Persona 3 (PS2)
Nintendo’s relationship with Atlus, the developer behind the Persona series, is both confusing and frustrating. Often, Nintendo consoles receive Persona spin-off titles – like Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth – but not the main entries in the long-running JRPG series. Nintendo consoles have also provided exclusive homes for games in Persona’s sister series with Shin Megami Tensei IV and V, and welcomed a remaster of Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne to its lineup of JRPG classics in 2020.
Persona 3, which brought the series mainstream success, has never been released outside of the PlayStation family, but would make a great fit for Nintendo’s handheld – particularly the portable version that was released for the PSP in 2009. Floating around Tartarus like malevolent shadows are rumours that a remake of the classic social sim/JRPG hybrid will be multiplatform – but no word on the Switch specifically. So what’s the deal? Persona 4 Golden made its way to Steam in 2020, which suggests there isn’t an exclusivity deal with Sony, right?
We can only speculate that someone at Atlus or Sony enjoys our suffering. And the less we think about Persona 5's continued absence on Switch — especially given Persona 5: Strikers — the less likely we are to give ourselves an aneurysm.
Probability: Unlikely
Skies of Arcadia Legends (GCN)
The legendary sky-pirate JRPG Skies of Arcadia released on the Dreamcast not long before Sega abandoned the console. Soon after, Sega ported Skies of Arcadia to the GameCube, where it received further critical acclaim.
It’s been two decades since then. As Skies of Arcadia is a JRPG in the truest sense of the genre, with turn-based battles, an evil empire to destroy, and airships aplenty, the Nintendo Switch would make a perfect home with its growing library of similarly themed games.
That said, the possibility of a remaster currently lies in the hands of Sega, and as of this article’s publishing, there isn’t any sign they plan to update Vyse and Aika’s quest for a modern audience anytime soon.
Probability: Unlikely
Suikoden II (PS)
Konami surprised many when they released both the Castlevania Anniversary Collection and the Castlevania Advance Collection for the eShop in 2019 and 2021 respectively. That means there’s a precedent for the controversial company to resurrect its classic titles on the Nintendo Switch much the same way that Dracula keeps ressurecting to terrorize the Belmont family.
Fans of Konami’s revered JRPG series Suikoden, however, shouldn’t hold out hope. Many consider Suikoden II to have one of the most engaging character-driven stories of any JRPG, and it would fit right in on Nintendo Switch, yet given Konami’s lack of interest in more popular games it owns, we don’t see a Suikoden collection happening anytime soon – if ever.
Lucky for us, the original creator of Suikoden, Yoshitaka Murayama, plans to bring a successor to the Nintendo Switch as soon as May.
Probability: Very Unlikely
Xenogears (PS)
You’d be forgiven for mixing up games with 'Xeno-' as a prefix. The first entry in the series, released way back in 1998 as Xenogears, was created by Tetsuya Takahashi and is currently the property of Square Enix. The follow-up series of games, Xenosaga, was also created by Takahashi at his new company Monolith Soft and is owned by Bandai Namco Entertainment. And the third and most recent series called Xenoblade currently serves as a celebrated Nintendo franchise, with several characters appearing in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Many revere Xenogears as one of the best JRPGs ever made, lauding its complex story and soundtrack as pinnacles of the genre. But despite Monolith Soft’s close relationship with Nintendo, and how often Square Enix re-releases games under its banner for modern consoles, it’s too difficult to say if Square Enix will be significantly motivated to bring it to the Switch.
Probability: Who Knows?
In a perfect world – full of floating islands, anime tropes, and oversized swords – each and every one of these games would come to the Nintendo Switch in some form where we could enjoy them on our modern setups or lounging on our sofas. And we sincerely hope they do. The more people get to experience and re-experience these classics, the better.
Until these games do make their way onto a modern system, however, we’ll just have to content ourselves with the dozens of other JRPGs the Nintendo Switch has in its massive collection.
Which of the following 10 games would you most like to see come to Nintendo Switch? Don’t forget to vote in the poll below — you can pick two games, which seemed fairer on the others given Mother 3's presence — and to let us know if we missed any JRPGs you’d like to see one day!

I wish Square would just remaster or remake Xenogears. Just let people play it, given the other Xeno games are doing well now.
Also, Persona 3 coming to switch is probably never happening. If anything, they'll probably give the switch Persona 3 Portable, given how minimal effort that would be.
I would rather have atlus bring over a bundle of persona 3 FES and portable than base P3. FES is basically the golden and portable has an alt route + the true post game ending.
Xenogears for me, please!
@AndyC_MK111 persona 1 was released on ps1 in america, persona 2-1 was released on ps1 in america. Not europe tho. The west had to wait until the psp remake of 2-2 until the could finally play the actual persona 3 (since 3 is technically 4, 4 is 5 and 5 is 6.)
Realistically, Chrono Trigger and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. Particularly the latter since I haven't played it, and the game costs an insane amount secondhand these days. The former deserves as much of an audience as possible, especially now that Chrono Cross is Switching over.
Wishfully, I'd like to see Mother 3, but that's beating several dead Yoshis at this point.
Skies of Arcadia: Unlikely
cries (Probably true though, we missed the 20th anniversary of the Dreamcast release in 2020)
I would absolutely lovely Chrono Trigger, Golden Sun, and more Panzer Dragoon.
Xenogears for sure. The main reason I miss my PS1!
IGN review for this article: 4/10
(-) Too many swords.
Paper Mario 2 is the only PM game I've haven't played yet since they have never rereleased it and I'm not a fan of emulation
Panzer Dragoon Saga. I am not totally convinced that modern audiences would understand what is special about the original game.
I went back and played the originals on the Saturn and there is something different (special) about those games on original hardware. I am not sure it would translates well to audiences of modern consoles.
It would be cool is SEGA would make a true 16 bit style sequel to the Phantasy Star series.
But Skies of Arcadia and the Golden Sun series would be nice.
I voted on P3 and Xenogears, since those are the least likely of the ones I want to see on Switch. I'd also be happy to see Chrono Trigger, Mother 3, Golden Sun (and sequels), and FFTA(& 2).
Others that would be cool to get a chance to play: Shadow Hearts: Covenant, Vagrant Story, and the Xenosaga series (that last one preferably as a full remake)
I am still surprised that they didn't bundle Chrono Trigger with Cross. Seems like a missed opportunity.
No one has mentioned Dragon Quest V (or any of the others preceding XI and following III) yet??
I would love a xenosaga series port personally. And SMT Nine.
Out of all of them, xenogears is the one most in need of a full top to bottom remake. Even at release it was incomplete and unfinished
Put a smile on my face to see Skies of Arcadia on the list so thanks for that!
I would love ports or remasters of Dragon Quest V, Final Fantasy Tactics (& 6 Advance) & Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door.
I already sampled lovely versions of DQ VII & VIII on the 3DS and Chrono Trigger on the DS. I wouldn't say no ports of them but I am not "as desperate" for them despite being a fan.
Xenogears remastered would be welcome too.
What about a Wild Arms port or remake, the original from 1996, really liked that one back in the PS1 days, sequels were ok.
Shining force series and dragon force
@darkswabber The Persona 2s were actually the other way around. Persona 2-2 was released in the west on the PS1, with Persona 2-1 first being localized on the PSP.
Never played Panzer Dragoon Saga. Would like to. Would definitely pay for it. Never had a Sega Saturn, so I welcome any Saturn games coming to the Switch.
Xenogears is definitely within possibility, but only if Square-Enix and Nintendo come down to an agreement of making it a Nintendo Switch exclusive. One reason? Monolith Soft is now owned by Nintendo. It's not like Rare, who worked on Diddy Kong Racing DS under Microsoft's ownership. Nintendo is very picky in comparison to Microsoft.
Mother 3 is most definitely a possible special re-release only under the condition of releasing with a higher age rating. I can imagine they already have a localized version of the game gathering dust.
Persona 3? Sega needs to pull their sh*t together first about exclusivity. It's like they have non-exclusive versions of SMT and spin-offs ready to be released, but they chose not to, or they simply have a contractual obligation not to. If it's the latter, they seriously need to freaking speak up about it.
It feels like ages since I played Golden Sun
Nice to see Skies of Arcadia in a list. One of my favourite game from the GC era. Although I'm not sure it has aged well. It might be a bit stiff and slow for today's standards.
I’m still super salty about the fact that Chrono Trigger was left out on the SNES mini. Then, as a further insult, it was passed by in favor of its inferior sequel for switch. Would be awesome if Square released a compilation of some sort, though unlikely given their recent direction…
@alexybubble that’s actually what I initially typed but my tired mind went “wait, is that correct, that doesn’t make sense” so I “corrected” myself (incorrectly).
I wonder if the higher ups can't figure out how to proceed with a Mother 3 localization from a business standpoint. All the hype might suggest it'd be a waste to put it on the NSO instead of a standalone purchase, but it's not like GBA ports are a hot selling item. Or they're just waiting until they make a big mistake and need a quick way to earn favor back.
Either way, Skies of Arcadia is hugely overrated.
The first 2 Shin Megami Tensei games also would be amazing to finally get.
I’ve never played Skies Of Arcadia, it totally escaped my radar in the GameCube days. That would probably be my number one, I’d love to try it. Paper Mario TTYD too because I, erm, sold mine… oops…
Why does NL keep writing articles that make me sad? 😉
Xenogears is likely never coming. It's in IP ownership purgatory. Ironically I think we are more likely to see Mother 3 on Switch
Man, really hoping for a re-release or remake of Xenogears. Such an amazing game honestly. Chrono Trigger, really surprised that one still isn't on the switch. Makes me think they have some other plans for that game...But to add to this list, I'm still waiting for Super Mario RPG to make an appearance on the Switch.
This is kinda cheating but I would love for Illusion of Gaia to be rereleased on modern platforms for a first.
This was a fun article but I gotta be that guy and say that FFTA was never a classic and was a big downgrade from the original game. We should be asking about when FFT will come to the Switch. FFTA should be part of a GBA Switch Online service, at best.
Yesterday one of your journalists claimed Golden Sun played like a traditional RPG despite it being far and away from that. Now it’s a masterpiece? This is a much better article. A really good read. Skies of Arcadia totally deserves it.
@VoidofLight I agree! Even if it is just as simple as a remaster like the ones they've done for FFVII-FFIX and Chrono Cross I'd be more than happy! However, if they could contact Monolith Soft and Nintendo to do a proper remake of the game that would be the DREAM!
id like to see every single one of these get released on switch, to be honest. half of these games are on my meta backlog for years, and the other half i played, loved, but never beat.
i went with xenogears and suikoden 2 because psx ruled and those games give me the warm and fuzzies. im finally playing through wild arms right now!
Terranigma (SNES) is crying out for a remaster/re-release
Supposedly Tomato (Clyde Mandelin) got an unofficial okay from Nintendo to do Mother 3 because they had zero intention of ever bringing it over so that one seems like it's never going to happen.
Before the last Direct, I didn't have high hopes for Panzer Dragoon Saga actually getting remade. Considering that Forever is doing Front Mission that makes me more hopeful that they manage a remake of that size. PDS is ridiculously expensive used, and it relies on properties of a CRT for its graphics so it's tricky to look just right emulated.
Also, as far as the poll goes, Panzer Dragoom Saga is the objectively correct choice. It is by far the least accessible and most expensive game on the list.
I would love to get a chance to play Xenogears for the first time seeing how I like xenoblade. Same with Xenosaga.
I agree with most of this list… it’s very important to that P3FEZ is what we want
Every time I hear of Skies of Arcadia I'm washed in nostalgia. What an amazing piece of art
@dsparil I don't remember Tomato stating that. Do you have the source on that as I'm kinda curious now.
Breath of Fire III !!
Chrono Trigger, but that's mostly for convenience. I have it on PC.
The real choice is Panzer Dragoon Saga, a legendary game I've never played — and difficult to come by. I'd love a Sega Ages treatment, not so much a remake or remaster.
Suikoden and ChronoTrigger, with Xenogears a close third.
Remake Shining Force III, the best tactics game almost nobody has played (because two thirds of it was never officially translated).
But yeah, Panzer Saga is another beaut.
I wouldn't mind Tales of Symphonia. As my first Tales game I ever played, I have a soft spot for it and still remember as a kid being amazed that a game would need 2 disks! (yes I realize FF7 did it before).
@GeekSleeves I completely forgot about this one! I played it not too long ago on emulation but having an official release would be awesome!
I have them all elsewhere, so I do not mind that much .
I would love Lufia II though, and Suikoden 3-5 which I do not have yet.
Chrono Trigger is definitely my most wanted. I've heard good things about Suikoden 2 and have always wanted to play it.
I kinda wish retro bundles included more of the series. Why are they always missing some of them?
Collection of Mana should have had Secret of Evermore in it.
Grandia HD Collection should have had Grandia III in it.
Why are the mobile versions of Dragon Quest 1, 2 and 3 on Switch, but DQ4, 5 and 6 aren't?
It's....so annoying.
I want the remastered version of Secret of Mana. It's ridiculous that it's a Sony exclusive when the original game was a SNES masterpiece, and beyond iconic to boot. That game should have been brought to Switch on day 1, and IMHO it's inexcusable that it's not come to Switch in the years since its PlayStation release.
I'd still love a Soul Blazer - Illusion of Time/Gaia - Terranigma trilogy release on one lovely physical cart.
Yeah I doubt TTYD is happening...
Shining Force III Complete: This is the Camelot magnum opus we deserve.
I was gonna come on here and say how we won't get any of them.
But you know what? There is Chrono Cross, Front Mission, Live A Live.
JRPGs are coming!
I just want Lunar 1 & 2
Xenosaga seems more likely than Xenogears, considering Nintendo's working relationship with Bandai Namco, but still seems unlikely overall.
Golden Sun NEEDS a comeback. Me and so many others have been waiting since Dark Dawn. I would love a TTYD sequel or restoring Paper Mario back to his true RPG glory but I highly doubt that will happen.
Mother 3 isn’t coming to the West. The Magypsies are way too problematic and with the current social climate there’s no way they wouldn’t be seen as offensive. And they’re too integral to the plot to be removed or replaced. The outcry would be huge and Nintendo doesn’t want that kind of heat.
I feel like anybody who picks up Xenogears expecting a ps1 precursor to Xenoblade is going to have a bad time.
I literally have every game on that list except for Skies of Arcadia. I loved Skies of Arcadia. The clouds. The ship tactics. The exploring. What a great game. Why is it listed unlikely. Who knows, but one can hope.
@thesilverbrick this. But they could put a warning in the game and at the box like how Disney did with the latest Rescue Rangers Blu-Ray release. It reads:
"Content advisory. Stories matter. This program includes negative depictions or mistreatment of people or cultures. Rather then removing this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future."
Would love to see back:
I really miss the last three I played from back to front on my cartridge back in the day.
Not sure I'd say we're "spoiled for choice". The PS2, PS1, and maybe SNES were examples of substantive jrpg libraries.
@IronDaughter I can’t see Nintendo ever doing that. They won’t even acknowledge JoyCon drift, never mind admit to potentially offensive depictions of trans people in one of their games.
Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy IV
Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
Here's my prediction of the chances we may get these:
Not really a JRPG but I’d like to see the Last Story
I approve of the Golden Sun content on here recently.
Prepare for hot takes, ye of thin skin:
Skies of Arcadia is at best a mediocre RPG experience with a fun setting.
But Xenogears is one of the most overrated, underbaked messes ever put out by Square and it blows my mind that it is still held up as a masterpiece or cult classic to this day.
You know what I would like to see above all those games on this list?
The Pixel Remasters of Final Fantasy I-VI ported to the Switch and other consoles.
Those games deserve to find a bigger audience that is not just limited to PCs or Mobile Phones.
Especially when you consider the vast majority of the target audience for the Pixel Remasters played Final Fantasy in the past either on the PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch.
I’d love to see any of these and would purchase day 1. Also bring Final Fantasy 1-6 while you’re at it.
The one I want the least though would be Persona 3…but even with that one, I’m on board day 1.
Another PS game that is kind of lost now, only available on disc. I am assuming Brave Fencer Musashi would qualify for this list?
Paper Mario TTYD on Switch.
Xenogears is the most annoying game I've ever played in my entire life. There was 1 battle every 4 seconds. To get out of position A to get to position B you did 15-20 repetitive battles. Terrible gameplay.
Dragon Force from Saturn was awesome too, hope we get that someday along with Saga!
@VoidofLight I wouldn't mind seeing a Xenogears remaster, if they actually finished it. The second disk was mostly hours of dialogue. I doubt this remaster will ever happen, as Monolith has most of the creative rights.
I would prefer to see FFT: War of the Lions come over. It was one of my favorite PSP games. The multiplayer aspect of it was awesome.
The heck is the determining factors for the likelihoods? How are Mother 3, Chrono Trigger, & Paper Mario: TTYD more likely than Golden Sun? Paper Mario TTYD is likely if they add a GameCube, but not before Golden Sun with the current rumors, Nintendo doesn't even have Super Mario RPG as part of their lineup so why would Chrono Trigger be more likely, & we don't even know if an official English version of Mother 3 exists! I'm so confused.
That headache aside, I'm not sure Persona 3 would come to Switch even if they remade it, considering they didn't even bother porting Persona 5, even though they made sure the Switch got the spin-off that continues the story of it. For some reason.
Xenogears times 1000
Hands down my favorite RPG on the PlayStation. Was it perfect? Defintitely not. Did it absolutely blow my mind? Yes.
Yes it did.
@ManaOwls I keep saying it'd be awesome if they could localize the 3 SMT games the Japanese NSO has - that'd be a decently sized selling point for some people.
@ShadowofTwilight22 I understand your point, and while I don't disagree about the alleged quality of the remake (I've heard the same thing from other people), not being able to see it for myself on a Nintendo console, when a Nintendo console made the original game famous, is just wrong imo.
@Logic sony owns the franchise it will never come to the switch..
@saiyantrunks79 Not to mention, Monolith is kind of reusing the concepts of Xenogears and perfect works for Xenoblade I'm pretty sure.
@JamminOnThe1
Yes! Lunar stands among the very best of the genre. Great characters, wonderful story, beautiful setting, memorable music. All the way!
@VoidofLight If they remake Xenogears, they definitely should consider touching up the second disc. That was a huge disappointment when I played back in the day. Stellar game, otherwise. But disc 2 ruins the game!
Poor Golden Sun. It might make it to NSO, but that's not really of much significance. I just don't know why they had to take so many missteps with it. It was very popular back when I was in middle school, but then it dropped off the face of the planet for years.
I voted for Skies of Arcadia and Paper Mario TTYD purely because I never had a Dreamcast or GameCube back in the day and those two are very expensive now, I have most of the others on this list I'm interested in... but I somehow forgot Mother 3 was an option, so I'd swap Paper Mario out for Mother 3.
They should remake xenogears, the story and soundtrack was amazing, but the battle system was kinda mediocre and the visuals didn't age that well.
Vagrant Story
Parasite Eve
Paper Mario tyd
Xenogears
Mother 3
Golden Sun
Breath of Fire III
pretty please?
Panzer Dragoon Saga is my number one choice.
It’s a crime against humanity that more people haven’t had a chance to play it. It’s that good and it showed off what the Saturn could really do.
I had to play it on an emulator that ran… not so well years ago. The Saturn is a tricky beast to emulate. Physical copies are out of the question; the US and European versions are some of the most expensive games that regularly trade on the retro market. Complete copies with all four discs, the case, the manual, warranty card, and most critically all four paper slips for the discs run around 1300 dollars for the US version, slightly less for PAL.
Even though I love (and am good) on Chrono Trigger, I still would like to see it come to Switch for those that didn't play it. So I voted for two games I've never played and would like to-- Xenogears and Skies of Arcadia. Technically I kicked off SoA Legends for GCN but I didn't get to continue it since I was borrowing it... One of my biggest regrets. And Xenogears' subject matter of philosophy and such has been of major interest for me, so maybe one day I'll get the privilege.
I made a chuckle at most of these Probability : Likely
I'd love Xenogears, but if I remember rightly there's issues with licenses over music and such, which is why it's never had a rerelease.
Let's get Breath of Fire 3 and 4. They're games I replay more than anything other than Suikoden.
What is the difference between 'likely' and 'possibly'?
Chrono Trigger, Mother 3, Suikoden II, and Xenogears would all be amazing to see on Switch. These are some of the best JRPGs ever. I would love to see straight-up ports of all of them. No remastering needed.
@MarkyVigoroth Likely means it may happen it just needs approval. Possibly means it's possible if certain condition are met like if there's an audience for it or if its beneficial for the dev to do so. Here's an example, the Castlevania Advance Collection is likely cause Konami owns the IP and it could be release at any time as long as Konami had interest. The TMNT Cowabunga Collect is possibly coming, the only thing holding it back is the license owner of TMNT and if there's interest in bringing those games back, all that's need for it to be release is agreement of the license owner and the original dev. We already knew both these collection now exist so that's a goal already met.
Xenogears was ahead of its time with the 2D/3D, and combo fighting elements. Still the most memorable game for the PS1 for me.
It would be great if Nintendo could acquire Xenogears and XenoSaga in some way. Would also love to see all the FF Tactics, Chrono Trigger and Valkyrie Profile games remastered in 2D-HD.
Since I was only allowed to pick 2, Chrono Trigger and Paper Mario win easily. Although Chrono Trigger I'd love a full 2D remake of and paper Mario I just want as is. I had never heard of Skies of Arcadia but it looks colorful and interesting.
Give me Chrono Trigger and a new sequel to the series, Golden Sun collection and a new sequel to the series, Paper Mario collection including Mario Rpg, new star fox game, Kid Icarus, and Donkey Kong. If I left anything out I'll remember later.
Need a Suikoden collection on Switch ASAP. Like yesterday!
@Supadav03 i agree with you 100%
@locky-mavo bandai namco owns xenosaga so forget about any chance of nintendo acquiring it
@VoidofLight yes. Kos Mos was a recruitable character in Xenoblade 2. Xenosaga was adapted from Xenogears.
@ShadowofTwilight22
Sega acquired Atlus years ago, and thus they are in charge of how to distribute Atlus games.
Always wanted to play Xenogears. On happy in general to see another of the era of JRPG being made playable. I missed a lot of them when I was a kid, and I'm unlikely to go and pay the crazy outrageous price for physical copies.
I want Skies of Arcadia the most out of the list. But want Mother 3 to complete the trilogy.
The Baten Kaitos games from GameCube are worth a mention, too.
Only 6% for suikoden II? That game was amazing, one of the games I most regret selling.
Lufia games have no excuse not com to NSO. C’mon Taito!
I have half of them, but I'd certainly welcome them all.
I don't need a remake of Xenogears. Xenoblade is already trying to go about doing a third try on Takahashi's Xeno: Perfect Works (after Xenogears never got Episodes I-IV or VI, and Xenosaga was compressed from 6 episodes into 3). Xenoblade is taking it nice and slow and building up to where Xenosaga and Xenogears were.
What I DO need is Square Enix to release a Chrono Cross-style upscaled port of Xenogears to the Switch. And for Bandai Namco to release ports of Xenosaga to the Switch as well. They can be assured that Xenoblade fans will buy these games. It's a sure market. Why wait?
Chrono Trigger I'm certain is coming as an HD-2D game from Squeenix. It's too valuable a title for them to just port or to sit on for too long.
Golden Sun is the only other game here that I REALLY need on Switch, though I own both english and japanese GBA and DS carts of the all three entries in the series, AND I own both the first two games on Wii U. But given the recent leaks, I expect we'll be playing GS soon enough on NSO…
Just have two games that'd I'd love to see remastered (not remade) on the switch. Super Mario RPG legend of the seven stars, and Legend of Legaia. Of course I would love to play more golden sun and chrono trigger and I'd love to get skies of arcadia so I can get my Skies of Arcadia fix that I haven't had since the days of GCN. If I never got Arcadia, Legaia, Trigger, or Sun, the least they could do is bring out a remaster of Super Mario RPG or at the very least bring it to the SNES Switch Online Library. I really want to play Super Mario RPG on the Switch.
@AndyC_MK111 Persona 1&2 both came out on PSone then later rereleased on PSP with some improvements.
Xenogears on Switch? Are you people smoking crack?
There are definitely games I'd like to see on NSO, several of them quite fiercely, but nothing eclipses how much I want to seen Chrono Trigger added to the line-up of Super Nintendo games. It feels like a crime that it's not already there. This may be an unpopular opinion, but I really don't want any extras or remakes or any nonsense like that; just give me a port of the original SNES version. I have the one that was released for the DS and hated the changes to the dialogue, because so much of the charm was gone. Chrono Trigger is a 90's game and needs to stay that way. I've played it through so many times I could probably still rattle off most of the dialogue if I thought about a given scene for a minute or two. It's a perfect example of 'if it ain't broke don't fix it', and the end result of the DS version was that they broke it in trying to fix what should never have been tinkered with in the first place. Really hope to see it, really hope they leave it alone aside from making it available, and for pete's sake none of that HD-2D stuff. I have Octopath Traveler; to a degree I like it, (it's very grindy which keeps me from playing much when I have so many other games I want to play and will actually feel like I've accomplished something in) and while I do have an appreciation for what they've done with those graphics, I also can't look at them for long stretches of time, because they really mess with my eyes and give me a terrible headache. And that's a shame, because I'd probably enjoy Triangle Strategy, but I just... can't spend money on something that I know is going to eff with my already terrible eyesight and make me miserable to try and look at.
As for the other games on the list, I don't think I've ever played any of them and haven't even heard of most, though that's probably unsurprising given the age of most of them; I only know and love Chrono Trigger because my dad had it (still does, it's in the living room, actually) in his selection of Super Nintendo games. The GBA games were more my era, but I missed the boat on those, too. I'm always down for some Final Fantasy, but I would actually like the chance to play Golden Sun, since I had the sequel with everyone's kids for the DS and was so sucked in that I spent four full days of summer vacation living on my DS and played through the entire game in that timeframe; seriously, I did nothing else. Getting to see the backstory for all that would be pretty interesting :3
My dream is that we get all 3 FFTactics games…..
@johnedwin
I’m quite aware who owns XenoSaga, but did you know that there is such a thing as funding?
While it maybe somewhat difficult for Nintendo to own the other Xeno-games outright, they could fund it similar to Bayonetta, or how Sony and MS acquire 3rd party exclusives.
Besides, the Xenoblade series has definitely perked up interest in Monolith's other Xeno-games.
Mother 3 ain’t happening. The best we can hope for is a Japanese/Asian exclusive release with English support (similar to a few other such games with English support but no Western release whatsoever), because I strongly doubt it will ever come here. It had a better chance in 2006 when the so-called arbiters of societal acceptability had at least a marble or two intact. You can’t have your perpetually indignant cake and eat it too. Something’s got to give.
The lack of love currently in the votes for Thousand Year door disgusts me.
I tried to play Persona 2 in VIta, it feels outdated. Persona 3 on the other hand got all the social links and dating elements we loved in Persona 4 and 5. Combining the best parts of PS2 and PSP release with HD upgrade it would be a blast on Switch!
With Chrono Trigger i feel if it comes to switch it will likely be that version they updated on mobile and PC (with widescreen and whatnot)
For suikoden it doesnt feel completely off the table given that konami, like capcom do tend to release quite a few legacy collections.
With mother 3 i feel like a big monkeys paw situation would be if it was exclusive to the rumoured NSO GBA library (due to the issues mentioned in the prior topic regarding the NSO service based model) though after seeing that fan made mockup trailer of a remake done in a style similar to the links awakening remake i would absolutely love to see something similar officially
Xenogears changed my life.
I dunno, I'm still riding the twin highs of the DQ3 and LAL remakes. Can't even begin to start wishing for more.
@ShadowofTwilight22
Source?
Sega is a publisher, so they don't necessarily need to look towards the development of the game.. I'm talking solely about distribution, because they have that power to make that change.
@shoeses There is a really simple reason, GameCube NSO will never happen. One gamecube game is about 1.5GB which is the maximum you can store on a GC disc.
So just having that NSO and 10 GC cames would take about half of the internal storage of a normal switch. (¼ for the OLED as it is double the size)
That would be quickly out of control in term of storage space.
Xenogears and for my wild card I would like Lost oddysey!
I would love to see Xenogears and Skies of Arcadia come to the Switch, since there is no easy way to play either of them, outside of emulation.
Don't think square will ever dare to remaster xenogears. The staff behind it being now Monolithsoft, they'd need some special agreements to do that.
@ShadowofTwilight22 Wouldn't the PS3 version technically be the definitive edition?
I don't understand why Nintendo hates Golden Sun so much. It and Advance Wars are at the top of my list for games long overdue for some love
If Square could port the FF Pixel remasters, that would be mighty nice of them too
Only 2 answers to the poll???
@Aruvein Monolith has nothing to do Xenogears even if the "creaters" are with them... Square as a whole owns It... It'll never happen
@Godzil I take it the way it works now is they directly download all the current games onto their apps because they're so small? I know NES & SNES games are especially tiny. Would there be no way around this that Nintendo'd be capable of doing? I know other companies can, but...
Honestly, when it comes to JRPGs on Switch it's really an embarrassment of riches already. There are so many all-time-classics available right now which I know there's no point in buying - it's hard to find 100-or-so hours to replay one or two, let alone the hundreds that are out there. The days of fantasising about JRPG ports to the Switch are gone for me.
But for the purposes of statistics, I'd wish for these:
Xenogears
Breath of Fire 4
Legend of Heroes Trails In The Sky
Thousand Arms
@shoeses There is no real magic that can be done, if it is emulation, they have to provide the whole game, they can't just cut part of it (without doing major changes in each games, and downloading on the fly would me your switch need to be connected to the internet to play gamecube games, or at least download it the first time, and even if the app come with no game downloaded by default, you will have to wait to finish the game download before you can play it, and you'll end with the same problem...
@Arumat I don't see square touching/relaunching a title where they only own the license but not the original developers. It'd just be awkward and some kind of lack of respect to its creators...
Suikoden 2 is a deep cut, good call.
Best list I've seen on a column.
Missed Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.
@Godzil But don't the current apps already need you to be online to confirm your subscription? I guess if storage is an issue for someone who can't buy a micro SD, but will splurge for the premium subscription, is they could have the app itself as a download, and just let you choose which ones to install & play on the emulator?
Xenogears is a no brainer. Square have been surprisingly great about porting their old JRPGs to switch. I got to play final fantasy 10 for the first time, after having desperately wanting to play it for 20 years. Along with being able to play final fantasy 7 and 8 for the first time, and Chrono Cross for the first time.
People would be perfectly fine with a port. It doesn't need a remake. Especially if they put in quality of life features like they have for their other ports like the final fantasy ones, like you can speed up the gameplay to like 4 times the speed, which makes running around grinding for levelling up much much less of a chore. Do that for Xenogears, those sorts of features, and that's it. People will love it, I'm sure.
And especially since the series has already done so well on switch, I can't see why they wouldn't wanna just port it, it's surely already in their plans, they just haven't got round to it yet
But yeah also, Chrono Trigger. They really need to port that. Port the DS version, albeit not with dual screens, the dual screen thing isn't necessary so you don't need to port it while trying to fit two screens into one like with the mega man ZX ports. Because the game was originally a single screen game anyway. Just keep all the cut scenes in it that were in the ps1 and DS versions of Trigger. And the quality of life features of the DS version. And do not ever touch the graphics. I don't wanna see the graphics form the steam port of it that look ugly as sin, they look like Newgrounds flash animations.
Actually that's a worrying thought too. They need to port the 2D final fantasy games to the switch too, and I'm very worried they're gonna port the steam/mobile ports of those too with their similarly awful graphics. It's not difficult, just port the basic games, don't change the graphics whatsoever, that's all you have to do, it's actually far LESS work than when you try and "remaster" pixel graphics to look like flash animations. I don't know why Square think people hate pixel art
Square Enix titles not likely.
Panzer Dragoon Saga.... That'll take an act of god. The source code has gone missing along with the assets. They'd have to rebuild it from scratch and rip what they can from a release copy of the game. either that or emulate it. I'd love to see this on any platform, but sega is not going to put the effort into it unless Panzer Dragoon and Panzer Dragoon Zweii Remakes perform really well.
Golden Sun I can absolutely see getting its day. Skies of Arcadia I can see getting an anniversary remaster in the next few years. Paper mario is a coin flip. I hope as I've never played it and my GC laser is dead. Suikoden II.... probably not. Not unless Konami wakes up from its stooper. Even its Castlevania and Contra releases feel kind of half hearted. glad to have them, but it might not be worth hoping they value suikoden on the same level. Cross your fingers for a collection I guess.
WILD ARMS! WILD ARMS!
Golden sun is life, love that series!!
Mother three sadly is so overhyped, and it's great parts have been copied so many times that it lost its oomph. Really can't understand what hehe them back.
But I also don't understand where Golden sun 4 is, or a proper chrono or thousand year door sequel!!
@darkswabber That way to name them is confusing. There is no reason why Persona 3 is "technically" Persona 4. The Persona series doesn't work like that. Also, the US got the second Persona 2, not the first.
The way it works is that the first game released as Persona 2 is "Persona 2: Innocent Sin." That one was not released in the US until the PSP remake. There were controversies surrounding the crazy plot, which included Hitler.
The second Persona 2 is "Persona 2: Eternal Punishment." That's the one that got released on PlayStation in the US. Both games together make up the full P2 story. Innocent Sin eventually got a Western release as one of the last PSP games. Not sure if that version made it to Europe.
i would buy all of them in a heartbeat!
Skies of Arcadia and Chrono Trigger but I'd love to get FFT and FFTA too.
@moodycat
Geez dude, pessimistic much? I've never seen you comment anything remotely positive.
@Aruvein That makes 0 sense... Square OWNS Xenogears... Not Nintendo or Monolith...
@Arumat just as i say. They just own the license. Doing a remake without the original developers who left to found another company would be just unrespectful.
