Following the success of its original Mega Drive / Genesis Mini, Sega has officially launched a second iteration of the miniature console, dubbed the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis 2.
Our friends over at Time Extension managed to get extensive hands-on time with the new system and have published their thoughts in a full review. Check it out:
In this guide, we've listed the full roster of games confirmed for Sega's latest mini console.

- Review: The Genesis / Mega Drive Mini Finally Does Sega's History Justice
So, What Is The Mega Drive Mini 2?
The Mega Drive Mini 2 is the second iteration of Sega's miniature take on its classic 16-bit console. Sega itself describes it as a complete revamp of the first Mega Drive Mini, with improved hardware tucked away in a new design based on the Mega Drive Model 2.
The console comes bundled with 50 games, including a mixture of Mega Drive / Genesis titles and Mega CD titles. One controller comes bundled with the console at retail, but Sega has also confirmed that controllers from the first iteration will be compatible with the Mega Drive Mini 2.
And When Is It Out, Please?
Well, it's out now! The console launched worldwide on October 27th, 2023.

I thought for a moment this was a joke, but no, it's a real thing somehow.
I always wanted to try Popful Mail, so this is a must buy for me. I love the Mini consoles.
I did not have this on my Bingo card for 2022
Oh damn! That's a must buy for me with those games in the lineup. It's basically a Sega CD.
No SEGA. Dreamcast please. Shining Force Cd is on there though and that Pop Mail. Great games.
I'm hoping there is a legitimate way to play those games on the Mini 1 and vice versa.
I wish they's made it like a cd add on for the mega drive mini from an aesthetic pov. It wouldn't necessarily have had to attach in any way but it would have made more sense than a mega drive 2 looking at the games.
@Bomberman64 Just add in 32X to the library, which can be possible with the emulation it can be capable of, and you might have an improvement over the Original Genesis Mini. I remember hearing about Knuckles Chaotix, and after learning how it inspired Jennifer Hernandez, whom I know online, to be a freelance artist working mainly on Sonic and My Little Pony, I saw what the hoopla was about.
Day 1.
Now bring on the Dreamcast Mini.
I might get this if it comes over
Mansion of Hidden Souls was kinda fun for it's time.
If this came to the US I'd take a look at it.
@EarthboundBenjy It’s a metroVania game. It’s cute and quite challenging.
I’ll be all over this. The first Mega Drive mini was probably the best of all the mini consoles, even better than the SNES one.
Hopefully Snatcher from the Mega CD will be on this.
This shouldn't be a thing. They should have made a Mega CD Mini that bolted onto the original Mega Drive Mini and expanded its range of games by 50.
I just caught it. It's gonna have
There's gonna be a couple more announcements, so be sure to see what they'll have.
I was going to buy the original Popful Mail complete but this is making me reconsider if it gets a UK/European release, as much as I love owning the originals and playing them on the real hardware.
I mean it's cool but at this point, why not just move to the Dreamcast? Compared to MD games, DC games are hard to come by in the modern age and I would kill to play Sonic Adventure, Shenmue and Nights for the first time.
If you like the Wonder Boy series, you will like Popful Mail!
I would like to see them go a similar route to the first for the second, like adding QuackShot, Starring Donald Duck. Although, I DO have Project Lunar installed on my Genesis Mini, I would STILL support SEGA by purchasing this, as long as there's a Mini 1 Owner's Kit,with the game system alone, and no Controllers, because I already have the Mini.
@YoshiAngemon Looking at their stream they have the SVP chip emulated by showing Virtua Racing, unless that is indeed the 32X version. Either way they're just continuing to show one banger after the other on that stream. Sonic CD! Magical Taruruto-Kun! Shining in the Darkness! and more! All classics whether you like those games or not. No shovelware so far.
Love it!! Saturn mini next
@Ellie-Moo If you buy the mini console you'll be supporting the IP holder directly and who knows if we might get something in the future in those franchises, compared to cashing out for a second hand copy. Just my 2 cents.
It looks great, if it gets a UK/European release it's a must have. On the livestream they have been showing Virtua racing working on it, now this is a mini console..
@Fizza You're forgetting the Saturn I think we should be happy that they're actually making steps into the future by adding Sega CD.
I honestly don't think we'll see anything from Saturn or Dreamcast until Nintendo makes mini consoles for those generations.
I guess it is the same on the inside as the other one just a different shell for the collectors. I already have ALL Mega Drive games I need on my Sega Mega Drive mini
@Bomberman64 In refraining from blowing our money, there's no way we can win. They're gonna kick our... (GONG) TEAM CHAOTIX!
@Bomberman64 A good point and in reality I will likely get the mini and the original! 😀
I'm seeing Fantasy Zone but not sure if it's the Master System version or arcade? So we're getting games from even more systems/hardware than 'only' Mega Drive, SVP and Sega CD.
Wow 😮 totally didn’t expect that , really hope a UK release is on the cards
@Bomberman64 Arcade, or possibly a new Mega Drive Build exclusively for this unit.
I’ll be picking this up if it comes out in the UK. The first was a great companion piece to the SNES mini (and I was a SEGA kid growing up so was even more welcome). However, I grew up with the Mega Drive 2 so it’ll be great to have a mini of the console that started it all for me. The fact that it will have Mega CD games which were well outside of my budget growing up is a big selling point and I’d be happy if the rest of the games were a mixture of 32X (even if it was just Chaotix) and ‘filling in the gaps’ from the first mini (Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Streets of Rage 1 and 3, Golden Axe 2 and 3 etc) Possibky even some more of the classic Disney games; we got Castle and World of Illusion on the first mini, Quackshot and Aladdin would be great editions.
@YoshiAngemon If they had gone a further step by creating a mini Mega/Sega CD and 32X to add on to the original MD/Genesis Mini, that for me would be amazing but I can of course understand it's not really practical for Sega.
A second Mini like this isn't quite as good for me but it's a bonus all the same as I never expected another. Yes I could just mod my original but I tend not to mess with anything like that, no matter how simple it may be.
@YoshiAngemon I think the stream confirmed it's a new Mega Drive build since on the game menu they show its release date as '2022 10 27'.
@Bomberman64 Whoops, my bad, the Saturn completely passed me by
But yeah, these mini consoles are going to be the definition of Sega does what Ninten.... also does.
@Ellie-Moo Your wish was just granted xD The Sega CD addon is a thing and the detail of it looks amazing. It even works with the first Mini system with an added extender piece, though I'm pretty sure it's all just plastic. There's even a Virtua Racing cartridge.
EDIT: That 32X addon is such a tease.
Crusaders of Centy!!!
That would be worth the price of admission alone, but also hey I guess now that Sonic 3 and Knuckles have been worked out that would be a fun one too!
Aladdin and Pocahontas are two other DREAM gets
What could be an awesome idea is offering a storefront to add games onto these mini consoles. It could be easily done, but these things wind up just sitting on my shelf more than they get played.
I might as well buy this. Never played Popful Mail before.
Ooh, Mega CD! There are some awesome games lost in time for this machine. Very interested!
My wishlist, still from the Mega Drive. A Haunting and Home Alone.
Geordies love slipheed.
@Gamecuber Sonic 1 would also probably have to be included in the Japanese version since it was included in every version except the Japanese one.
Was hoping this was going to be announced. The first mini console included Micky mouse games, castle / world of illusion. I wonder if Micky mania or other Disney games will be included. Mortal Kombat was big on the Mega drive but even with 3rd party on board, Sega may want to avoid giving the product a Pegi 16 rating.
Well... It's really unexpected. Sega CD games are good thing, but... What's about Sega 32X? Huh? Are they(Sega) going to release Sega Mega Drive Mini 3 with 32X games in the near future? And why they didn't make it from the very beginning?! I mean, Sega Mega Drive Mini with Mega Drive, Sega 32X, and Sega CD games. They planned to make two mini consoles from the very beginning, I think. Greedy Sega... Also, a long time ago, they promised to bring their old Sega Saturn and Dreamcast games to the current gen platforms... But nothing happened.
Maybe ill take a peak. Unfortunately I never got the original.
@Bomberman64 lol. I get what you are saying but I really feel we need to move pass the emotional blackmail of buy this thing you only half want and you might get something you really want. I’ve supported sega plenty in the past to the tune of thousands of pounds and they still rarely give us what we want.
I love the mini consoles but there's no way I could justify this having a Mega SG now.
I'd love to see a bunch of master system games thrown on there.
I'm crossing my fingers for Langrisser (Warsong) and Mercs. If it avoids games already on the Megadrive Mini, this is going to be awesome!
I’ve got almost 100 games on my Mega Drive Mini including some 32x games so I don’t reeeeeally need this one do I? 🤔
@Stocksy Of course, there's nothing on the product that says that if you buy it they'll make another game in any of the included franchises. The discussion is whether to buy these second hand or get them in this physical release.
Yes there's always the other 'route', but if someone's already set on sailing that way then why would they waste their time here in this article.
@Fizza NiGHTS was a Saturn game, but yeah, I hear you!
@Freek
I could see Sega considering that the hardware needed to emulate Dreamcast games will drive up the cost to a level where fewer consumers would be willing to buy.
@Coalescence I would justify it the same way I do by also owning a PC - legally owning copies of these games. It's anyone's choice what they want to do and I'm not telling you what you should do with your money, naturally.
Sega been riding the success wave of the Mega Drive for as long as I've been alive
CD games like Ecco would seal the deal for me. Off to mess about with emulation on this.
What happened SEGA I thought we knew each other
Hopefully this one doesnt have the inputlag
@River3636 shining force CD is tempting. Lunar games would seal the deal for me.
Nintendo and Sony need to release new mini consoles as well.
Oh wow. I had no idea Silpheed was on Sega CD. I was actually trying to see if that game was on some kind of compilation. I'm not sure its a good game, but I loved that one as a kid and used to play it often on my computer.
C'mon, man, release a Saturn mini. People have played the Genesis library to death at this point.
I'll forgive them if this comes loaded with Sega CD games.
what's the point??? a Saturn or Dreamcast mini ok... ANOTHER MD is completely nonsense...
I’m utterly shocked but I’m equally excited! Really hoping for a Dreamcast mini and a Saturn mini which this seems to be closing in on.
In any case I’ll be buying this!
@Ralizah mega cd games are crap😬
I might buy this for Silpheed alone. I really loved that game. I wonder what the chances are of Thunderhawk being one of the 50 games? It would be nice to play through Road Avenger again too.
Instead of another Megadrive mini can we not get a Dreamcast mini?
@EarthboundBenjy Have to wonder if that will still be included in the west. They'd have to license the Working Designs translation.
(which is uuuuugh, but I suppose is better than nothing. I guess. )
Given Vic's penchant for both jacking up the difficulty and insert now very outdated jokes into the writing.
Oh my god, they actually did ittttt!!!! When I put this as my prediction in the article last week, I never truly expected it to happen! Beyond excited!!
I started up a game of Mansion of Hidden Souls a few months ago. I need to finish that.
@River3636 The English version is challenging because Victor Ireland produced it. That man claims raising the difficulty on everything he published was a necessary business strategy.
(I heard that with the PS1 manual to Lunar Eternal Blue even admitted one of the changes to the Sega CD version was more annoying than challenging. )
I've heard the Japanese original was designed for you to be casually take quite a few hits.
@Zanzox Maybe you've only seen the bad ones? Every console has some good games and a ton of crap. (unless it's a crappy knockoff console like the Supervision.)
Bit late for April Fools, no?
@Dijita Silpheed I'm guessing was a remake (or else a sequel. I know there was also a game on PS2. Unfortunately also brought to the west by Victor Ireland, which means he probably ruined it in some way.)
When the Sega CD game was created, it was perhaps incorrectly compared to StarFox.
I remember when playing the Sega CD version, it being difficult to tell the hazards from the background scenery. Feels like much of the game visuals were probably FMV with sprites on top.
I need to buy this just to support to fact they made that wrestling promo. HAHA.. that was awesome.
So far several games on the list I'd love to play. Never got to own the CD system. Wonder if they'll eventually release a working Tower of Power mini with a super bundle of games. That might be worth collecting.
Ugh who cares. These minis and retro consoles are such a niche product. I have my snes mini collecting dust on a shelf. They "look" cool but in reality these games really haven't aged well at all. If they (Sega) wants to continue to release old games just drop them on the Switch.
@KingMike I've seen many ... some are 6 or 7 out of 10... no masterpieces (sonic cd maybe)... the rest are crap... fmv games with almost no iteration, some MD ports... etc... and mega cd is not a console, it's an add-on...
I was really hoping for a Dreamcast mini. I’ll have to keep waiting.
@EarthboundBenjy Disappointing game.
@Bomberman64 because most of us go as legit as companies allow us. I have every mini console released to date. Both versions of the switch. 4 different DS. Multiple game boys. Two ps2s, two GameCubes, n64, two xbox OGS, two 360s, a ps4 pro, XSX, xb1s, ps5… OG megadrive… ps1… and more on top… over well over 2000 phyiscal games and well over 1000 digital games. I think I support the industry heavily. Have I “set sail” yes…. I’m not sure why you assume someone that has “set sail” has no place on an article like this.
If this was a Saturn or a Dreamcast. Or even an expansion for the OG mini I’d be all over this…. This stinks of a easy milking…. It’s so sega and so on brand it hurts
I don’t know how I feel about this. I don’t want a ton of minis under my tv but if this has no overlap with the previous Genesis mini and is mostly sega cd games, I would bite. I do wonder about regional changes however. Still want a saturn mini though. Mine is on its last legs.
I misread the title and thought Sega was releasing a new next-gen Mega Drive console and got really excited
Must Buy, I still play the 1st Sega Genesis Mini every now and then. This definitely needs a western release. That Magical Tarurūto Kun game, that’s a Shonen Jump manga. If this does get a western release I doubt that game will show up here.
Look and sounds great
Wonder what the other games are?
I was hoping for a Saturn or Dreamcast Mini, but I'll take this, especially if M2 is still involved. The first MD mini has probably been my favorite mini console to play vs. the NES, SNES, Astro City, and Neo Geo.
OK, who wrote 'Mega Drive Mini 2' in a Sega survey?
Please put the english version of snatcher on it!
Oh crap... this is the first mini console that I've seen the games list for and thought "I MUST PLAY THOSE GAMES (again)". I don't know if I'm more surprised by the announcement or my reaction.
Once again Sega milks the Megadrive ROMs and ignores the Dreamcast and Saturn. ☹️
This mini console is dry~ PlayStation already has a mini in the 32bit and they’re still laundering a 16bit toy. If Nintendo releases n64 mini, it’s gonna kill it.
@BulkSlash once again it comes down to the software, but I'd be extremely interested in a saturn mini.
@Fizza Sonic Adventure (okay, fair--DX version), Sonic Adventure 2 and Shenmue 1&2 are easily all playable on modern hardware in the form of Xbox and PC (Steam). And maybe even PS4 (with Sonic possibly online-only with their cloud streaming service though).
I do agree that the Dreamcast would be a better machine overall to miniaturize at this point and it does have a lot of games that either haven't been ported elsewhere to this day or have been ported to now old hardware that itself is showing its age in convience connecting to modern TVs and obtaining in the first place, but there's a fair amount of stuff including the games you mentioned that are luckily not tied back with old hardware.
@Zanzox I suppose the FMV games are a product of their time. People thought video games were going to turn into movies.
Arguably games like Final Fantasy X would prove that vision right to some extent.
With the first Genesis mini, the Sega Genesis collection and now Genesis Switch Online, you basically have no excuse to not be able to play Genesis games.
@Stocksy I can’t even imagine what a person would do with 3,000 video games. I have 182 games and I still feel like I have too many.
@KingMike
I actually did get myself the Japanese version of the Mega Drive Mini, mostly because it came with the six-button controllers, but also because I specifically wanted to play Madou Monogatari I. So I don't even mind if Popful Mail is only in the JP release - I'll just get the JP version.
I personally don't know what to think of this, and I'll hold off until more is known, including more of the included games.
I already have the original Genesis Mini... would this be worth it? How much overlap in games will there be between the two models? Will I need two Genesis Minis just to get the whole experience (Mini 1 for Sonic 1&2; Mini 2 for Sonic 3, Knuckles, 3&K), or will this one feature a more complete library making the original more obsolete and overall better? Or will the new system just focus more on providing games that really weren't a part of the original model, making it more of a potential worthwhile buy even for owners of the original console, assuming its full and final list of games is worth it?
I don't know what to think about this just yet. We need more details. So far it looks like they are going the route of having this one stand out on its own with unique games not on the original model, but honestly, I wish they would just put everything on the first model on here too, but expand the list with more, unique titles. Why should I need one Genesis and set of controllers connected to my TV for Sonic 1&2 and a bunch of spin-offs and another Genesis for Sonic CD and probably others, for example? HDMI ports and physical space aren't exactly unlimited, and convenience sharply declines as those two resources become exhausted.
Edit: And I know Sonic 3 & Knuckles are not mentioned, but I used them as an example due to the possiblity as Sonic Origins draws near, and the fact that they can be seen as multiple separate entries on top of several games in the series already on the current model. Of course, Sonic CD is already known as one of available games.
I wonder if these are the only new games included, plus the games from the original system, or if it will feature mostly different games from the original? The first mega drive mini was great but I already have it and thus those games.
Btw shout out to the PC Engine mini.. great maybe underrated mini console!
@BloodNinja I’m old. It’s been a few years of buying. I could do with 10% of what I own TBH. I have 500 physical switch ones now
I'll definitely try to get one of these but I'm not holding my breath. I already have games like Ecco the Dolphin (Sega CD version) so even if I couldn't get one it's not the end of the World. I'm a collector so that would be the only reason I would buy it.
@Stocksy I'm old, too! That wasn't meant as a dig against you, more of a query to the situation. Really, it made me look at myself, more than anything. I still feel like I have too much excess "stuff" in my life. Been working on simplifying. Feels good, but there is more work for me to do!
@Zanzox As the saying goes: one man's rubbish is another man's treasure.
Needs Night Trap and Sonic 3 on it.
Day 1 for this retro gamer!
PLEASE put Crusader of Centy on this console! It's so rare and expensive on the retro market and I've always wanted to play it!
I was told that there might be plans to sell it internationally, but it will be more limited, so I guess that translates to Limited Run Games releasing the Genesis Mini 2, And if they're gonna do that, then maybe I'm better off playing Sonic CD on my Genesis Mini 1 with RetroArch, thanks to Project Lunar, because the on-board emulator on that isn't as up-to-date as the second one.
Sega literally still relying on their one success story 30 years later and people continue to praise them for it. I would rather them release then as a digitally and use an 8-bitdo controller and get the exact same experience. They need to move on from releasing some mini variation of one console that they have been doing in some form or another for the past two decades.
@Bomberman64 My guess is that it's a newly developed port by M2 for the Genesis hardware. They did the same thing with the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine/CoreGrafx Mini for Fantasy Zone and several others.
Surprised Bonanza Bros. is one of the announced games. Was that not on the original?
Feels like one of those games people don't speak of that still gets included in most high volume collections.
Sega needs to get over their obsession with the MD era and realize people are more interested in Dreamcast and Saturn games.
I feel like the opportunity has passed on this one. I would have been more excited about an announcement actually involving the New Japan Pro Wrestling license, which this seems to have absolutely nothing to do with.
I love this way more than I should!
If really hope that it releases in the uk. Day one purchase for me. And hopefully if enough buy it it may get them to do Saturn and Dreamcast minis, would love those as never owned the original consoles.
Please let this come to America! I would love to see the lineup look something like this:
1). Road Rash III
2). Sonic 3
3). Sonic and Knuckles
4). Phantasy Star 2
5). Beyond Oasis
6). Donald Duck in Quackshot
7). Toejam and Earl 2
8). Eternal Champions (Sega CD)
9). Final Fight (Sega CD)
10). Streets of Rage III
11). Super Street Fighter II
12). Skitchin’
13). Rocket Knight Adentures
14). Earthworm Jim (Sega CD)
15). Night Trap (Sega CD)
16). Tomcat Alley (Sega CD)
17). Another World/Heart of the Alien (Sega CD)
18). Outrun
19). Columns III
20). Jungle Strike
21). Snatcher (Sega CD)
22). Revenge of Shinobi
23). TMNT: Hyperstone Heist (I would have considered this an impossibility before the Cowabunga Collection was announced. Remember how Contra Hard Corps was released on Mini 1 after the Contra Collection was released?)
@BanjoPickles great list!
Mega CD? Hallelujah! At last!
As a certified Falcom lunatic, I gotta check this out just for Popful Mail. Also, Lunar 1 and 2 on PS1 are two of my favorite games of all time, but I've never tried the originals, so I hope those are on this too.
@Hadooken84 You sound like we're stuck in the 90s, Sony just released the PS1 and you're arguing why the Mega Drive is a worse choice 😂 The PS5 is out too or the Xbox series X which both knock the Playstation Classic out of the competition (I'd argue any of the other mini consoles do too.)
My way-outside pick would be for them to include Panic, which was a game where you picked what button to press to navigate a sort of maze. Selecting the wrong button would send you back or trigger a funny animation. The real goal was to push all the buttons.
@Stocksy As I said you're free to do what you want with your money. My point was that I don't understand people who come to these threads just to say that they are just going to pirate it like they always do, you've already described yourself of not being in that "boat". It's anyone's right to be disappointed, just like how it's my right to be as hyped for this as I was with the first Mega Drive mini, and I almost never get hyped for anything game-related anymore. I guess I'm just happy to see we get the possibility to legally buy these games in this age of limited time digital sale (Nintendo) and the advent of game streaming.
Amazing news! Now we just need the European and American models!
Mini consoles? What is this, 2016 to 2018?!
i would love to see lunar silver star story and eternal blue be two of the 50 games in this collection!!
@YoshiAngemon PL kept resetting my MD Mini so I had to delete and install RA.
❗️Only the other day I was thinking about selling💷 my (modded) S/NES/MD Minis as I don't use them due to other ways if playing Retro Games (BittBoy: Pocket-Go and Switch re-releases).
They WERE under the 🖥 but now they're back in their 📦es.
@Fizza Most of the Dreamcast library is on steam lol.
@WanzerAce In Sega's eyes if something doesn't sell well it's a failure.
It's just endless MD stuff.
Never Saturn. Never Dreamcast. We have literally played MD to death over the past 20 years. ENOUGH ALREADY
If this gets a Western release (it will not) it would be the first localized release of Shinning Force CD, one of the best tactics games ever made. I really hope (foolishly) that this game will finally make it's way West (again, it will not) so that everyone gets a chance to play it (they won't).
PLEASE get a Western release with English versions! There are so many amazing Mega CD games but many of them have a lot of text.
Its obvious point to say "what about a Master System, Saturn or Dreamcast Mini" but to be fair I did see many people disapointed that the Megadrive Mini wasn't the mk2 as thats the model they had nostalgia for (not me, I always prefered the first, but the mk2 sold a tonne so I understand). I'll argue til the day I die that the Mega CD and 32X had some incredible games that justify their existance and should be preserved and more accessible as almost no-one got a chance to play them.
@Bomberman64 there is a megadrive fantasy zone game made by sunsoft
I'll try & get one before the price shoots up
Edit* it's japan only so will have to wait & see if there's a UK release
@WaveBoy Hahah, thanks
@Dijita The Mega CD version of Silpheed is a remake and massively upgraded over the DOS/FM-7 versions, it was a huge graphical showpiece for the system in its launch window. Highly recomend checking it out if you enjoyed the original. There's also a PS2 sequel, believe it or not. I've never tried that one though.
Hope it has Snatcher 😁
Guess we should just wait for the inevitable third model that will include Genesis, CD, and 32X games.
If it includes both Lunar games, I’m in!
I knew Sega couldn't let go of the Genesis but the addition of Sega CD games are nice, hopefully Final Fight CD and the Lunar games made it.
OMG. SHINING FORCE CD !!!!!!!! I can die now.
Hopefully Snatcher will get included. Never managed to play it, and to buy from eBay it’s always a monkey, if not more
Would like to see Batman Returns just for the driving section
@HeadPirate how can you be so sure it will not get a western release?
@X68000 Yeah that's Super Fantasy Zone, no?
Sega you have other consoles besides the genesis you know! A dreamcast or saturn mini would be pretty nice...
Why not just release an updated mini console with the earlier games included too. No one wants 2 megadrive mini consoles.
Then again, Sega has always been bad at business decisions.
@Bomberman64 damn it, couldn't hide my age 🤣
Mansion of Hidden Souls is a name I have not heard in decades. I remember not having much money for games for my newly bought Saturn and picking up the cheapest crap I could at Funcoland. This was one of them and it was one of the most bizarre, ridiculous, and terrible games I had ever played 😂🤣. But I played the hell out of it because it was one of the only games I had until I got some better ones.
This needs the 4 main Sonic games on it really. But hats off to them, 50 games. If only Nintendo put that count out for their 16 bit mini.
@Bomberman64 in case no one answered you it is likely the mega drive version of Fantasy Zone which never came west to us Genesis fans. I ended up importing the mega drive cart because I was such a huge fan of Master System games! Good stuff
Fun and unexpected announcement!
I can’t get enough of mini consoles
I really hope we also get a Master System Mini and Saturn Mini.
Snatcher. Please.
So far, so cool. Hoping for
Jurassic Park
SoR1
Ecco: Defender of the Future
Sonic 3
Sparkster
Zombies Are My Neighbors
Splatterhouse
TJ&E2
The Mortal Kombat games
@Bomberman64 Why do they have to wait for Nintendo to do it? Sega has been making plug n plays way before Nintendo decided to do so.
@BanjoPickles Those are some choice picks
@SiriusA Why do you keep spamming articles with this copy/paste post that's off topic?
On a related note, I'd love to see Willy Beamish.
@KingMike For Lunar the PSP version is the best. But I’ll play that Sega CD game any day like I was kid again.
@Tempestryke My impression was that no other company dared to do a serious attempt until Nintendo came and did one. I'm prett much not counting the atGames consoles for sega systems. I mean by all means, Sega can beat the competition to it and I'd be happy. Nintendo have indeed done two generations but the hardware inside the mini consoles was the same so I'd feel Sega would be much more likely to make a Master System mini before a Saturn, let alone a DreamCast. Not sure what a SoC capable of running Saturn would cost right now either.
One point for thought is that sega have opened the gates to saturn emulation like we've recently seen released on Switch, even if the emu wasn't proprietary. Not sure what way they'd go. Maybe M2 is working on a Saturn emulator themselves.
@joey302 I actually got an answer and it is a completely new arcade port done by M2 themselves. They've done it again like they did with Gradius on the first Mega Drive mini. Also, didn't Super Fantasy Zone come out in Europe, which means it did come out in the west, just not the far west.
@Bomberman64 from what Ive always understood, Europe and Japan shared all the mega drive releases while North America/Canada was Genesis. We did NOT receive an official Genesis release of SFZ or other games like Turbo Outrun. Come to think of it i hope Sega puts and Outrun game on this Mini 2! That would be cool.
@joey302 Yes, there never was a Super Fantasy Zone in US until it got put on the US Wiishop in 2008, going by Wikipedia.
Usually in Europe, even though the console was named Mega Drive, we only got the same releases as the US, heck most of the time some games wouldn't even arrive in Europe and only get localized to the US.
However, some very rarely Europe would get localizations that the US didn't get. One of them is Super Fantasy Zone and Zero Wing is another example.
@Bomberman64 yes SFZ was on Wii I remember thinking holy cow & purchased immediately. I also remember asking myself why wouldn’t Sega bring this & other games like the Japanese shooters to Genesis? It was always a strange thing how they decided what game was released in what region. Usually JRPGs suffered the most with the heavy language translations required. But I’m glad all today’s consoles are region free. Yea Silly of me to assume Every single Mega Drive game came to Europe and Japan forgetting that the majority of us don’t speak or read any Japanese 🤪 Lol
@Donutsavant Crusader of Centy would be amazing
@BanjoPickles Oh man, I'd love to see Heart of the Alien on there.
Silpheed is worth the price of admission alone. Maybe. Probably. Love that game.
@Banjo- Wait @ Banjo- and @BANJO. two! Banjos!?
@Kayloo Yes, two different Banjos... 😀
GUH HUH! -Banjo
@Kayloo @BANJO That's right 😁.
But who is the REAL Banjo?
Virtua. Racing. Two words that mean an instant buy from me
Sega does what Nintendont.
Well done Sega for having the best retro gaming experience without actually having a current gen console on the market. Thank you for not locking your retro games behind subscription "services".
only question that matters: will sonic cd have the japanese soundtrack
@nightopia
Same! I’ve always wanted to play it, and I missed that golden opportunity to do so when I was a Sega CD owner, during its run. Our local video store even carried it (sadly, the same can’t be said of Snatcher. I looked everywhere, and could never find a copy to rent, or buy).
I’m optimistic. They have released Another World on pretty much every platform, over the past several years. Supposedly, the MD2 will have 20 Sega CD games, so it’s definitely a possibility.
@WaveBoy
Saturn,I believe was a combination of right console at the wrong time and proof that Sega was an absolute mess! If Sega of Japan had actually paid attention to the North American market, they could have alleviated so many of the unnecessary mistakes they made. They stopped supporting the Genesis way too early, they should have stuck with the September release date, they should have worked on the architecture of the console more to help bring the cost down, and they should have chased after a more robust, diverse library. They were banking on Virtua Fighter—an arcade port, and a bad one at that—selling consoles.
I was fourteen when PlayStation launched, and a total Nintendo/Sega fanboy! PlayStation managed to grab my complete and undivided attention, at least until the Dreamcast arrived. I didn’t care for the N64. Maybe I’m in the minority, but I don’t care how good your first party games are. If your third party support is garbage, I won’t support you.
@johnedwin
Localization is insanely costly. It's just not viable in a project like this. SEGA has already passed on localizing it as part of much more profitable and risk adverse projects, including listening the rights for a full remake, so seeing them front the bill now would be like someone passing on luxury features for their Rolls Royce only to have them installed later on their FIAT 500, or like the FF7 remake showing up as part of a multi-game collection with no fan fare or marketing.
@Bomberman64 So because you "think" that Nintendo was the first to "do so seriously," that automatically discounts the fact that both Sega and several old school arcade companies, have been making them since at least the early 2000s? There's some silly hardcore fan logic for you.
For the record, I used to own one. It only had maybe 5 or 6 games on it and was shaped as a red controller but ran decently enough. An officially licensed plug n play, is an officially licensed plug n play. Regardless of how many games are on it, or what its shaped like. Nintendo did not do it first, it's as simple as that.
@Tempestryke I'm curious as to which company I'm supposedly a hardcore fan of?
The way I see it is that Nintendo did it first in this current wave/gen of highly advertised and overall decent quality retro mini consoles. The older plug-and-play consoles were stuff you'd see in bargain bins and that would never get close to as much attention as the consoles of this wave. Anyways, if people had fun with them then more power to them.
It would be great, albeit extremely unlikely if they included some of EA's Megadrive games, Road Rash, EA Hockey, the Strike series.... Its almost criminal that these games have been stuck in the 90's.
Wish they'd release this in the US.
Too bad they probably won't. I have a fond memory of the Sega CD.
Too bad no US release announced yet. Been emulating a lot of Sega CD and 32X games. Most are great and very impressive for the 16 bit Era. Games are fun and look great but didn't sell well and that's what they use to judge the games.
@River3636
Where have I seen that avatar before?
Is it Mikhail from Xenoblade?
I had no idea there was a Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water game. That'll stay Japan-exclusive, I'm sure, but I need to look up a playthrough now.
O.k, is nobody going to talk or mention the flight yoke controller they show????
Not for me, but dang, that is cool.
Come on Sega, release this outside of Japan.
@Slowdive nice list of games by the way.
@Ralizah Oh, Nadia. Now there's a game that -I- have SURELY no familiarity with!
It's essentially a visual novel but in a top-down 2D format.
Odd choice, a third-party (Namco) license game.
However, Megapanel (another Namco game). Now that is a game that one streamer I watch would refer to as "cursed", if even just from the small description I gave.
It is a game I own because I am a guy who could not resist a $2 cart with a cartoon butt on the label. I guess the gameplay is penance itself.
What is? A falling block puzzle game WITH SLIDE PUZZLE mechanics. Unlike other puzzle games, you can be staring at a screen in a walking dead state for minutes. (the only other game I've heard described that way was this awful game called Virtual Lab that was rushed out for the Virtual Boy before Nintendo's deadline. It's one of the "Elite Four" of crazy expensive Japanese games.)
@OorWullie I agree! Given how almost everything seems to get a re-release, remake or remaster these days, surely a Strike Collection is deserving of a release? With the 16-bit trilogy and the two 32-bit entries (Soviet Strike and Nuclear Strike) there would be plenty of content for the package. They could also throw in Future Cop LAPD (it started life as Future Strike) and some alternate versions of the games - like the Master System Desert Strike and N64 Nuclear Strike. I'd buy it!
@River3636 not sure they could make an Arm-based SOC that can run the Dreamcast fluidly… at least, not yet. Tried emulating the N64 on a Raspberry Pi 3 a couple of years ago… wasn’t pretty.
both lunar games would make this a steal to get!!
@Moistnado Yeah let's just gonna pretend that the Sega Genesis NSO doesn't exist.
@KingMike Oh, nice. I should see if there's an english translation patch online.
The retro fantranslation community has made so many old Japanese video game classics accessible to the public.
UPDATE: Huh... there aren't any "HOLY CRAP I MUST PLAY THOSE GAMES AGAIN" games in the new list. Suddenly this thing seems a little less desirable, though Silpheed and Shining Force CD alone would probably justify the purchase for me.
Holee molee I don't think I ever knew there was a Nadia TSoBW game on the Mega Drive!
Sega WHY isn't this unit available for preorder on Amazon Japan yet?! Getting nervous.
Edit: Forget it - I finally found it listed there and preordered now. Whew! I was afraid they were restricting it to Japan domestic customers only.
Here was the link, if anyone else is thinking of importing the Japanese unit this fall:
https://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/B0B2S113PQ/
(I'm a Japanese speaker and would prefer to own this version of the console even if they announce a Western release later, but YMMV...)
They should put Lunar and Lunar 2 on it.
No 32X? No deal. lol
@Zonned Not even sure who owns Lunar or how they'd get ahold of localized versions of that game on hand. Working Designs which did the localization outside of japan doesn't exist anymore and I don't think the rigths to those localized builds reverted back to the IP holder. I don't think Gung Ho the parent company of Game Arts owns the IP either.
@progx I wonder how much different it would be on a pi 4? The rumour is the pi 5 might be out next year...also I wonder what the comparison is between a pi and some of the systems on chips you can get...
They have changed the Car in outrun similar to the Ages car. So glad I have the Saturn version
Star Mobile is a new release. I have it for the X68 and the PCE CD. it is a great title
@Ralizah The was because I did the programming part of a Nadia patch.
Though it was made for emulators so I took perhaps bad inspiration from another group and made it "dual-language" which resulted in it working on US region. I should fix that, though I can't believe how I did it with the programs used. Though hopefully other that region dependency it'll work on hardware.
@NotSoCryptic Weird that three different companies have been involved in Lunar localization. I'm sure Victor Ireland is still around (and may even be summoned for online debate if one is so lucky ) but Ubisoft did the GBA and I think Xseed did the PSP remake?)
Really hope this comes out over in the west. Will be a day one purchase for sure. I’m a fan of the mini consoles, even the ps one, as not having that first time around, gave me the chance to play games I’d never played before, plus I got that one for 20 quid!
@KingMike I'd assume burn every copy on the planet and destroy the source code before letting ubisoft touch anything else ever again.
XSeed did a fair job on PSP, but I'd have preferred the Saturn/PSX version myself for a few reasons.
It's hard to say where verything lands these days. In the case of Sega CD, that falls flatly on Working Designs for legal discussion. I personally got tired of waiting for it to come to PSN and just ultimately hacked my Vita and now my Steam Deck to play the PS1 version of both games.
I do agree that having both Lunar games would have been a great addition, I'm sure there are plenty with memories of EGM, Game Pro, and many other magazines who were curious as to what they were missing from that heavily advertised Sega CD game. almost bought a Sega CD myself because of those ads, the lack of a genesis being the only thing that stopped me. thankfully PSX got it a few years later in a remade form. If that game made it to SNES with the Super CD, day one buy for sure. Irony to all of this is I now own a Genesis that I've modded with a triple bypass and I'm looking to get a Sega CD at some point lol.
I think I've passed the time of being interested in mini consoles. I got the ones I wanted, played them, and now they sit on my shelf of my house. The first Genesis mini had the games I wanted and this one doesn't seem to have enough to get yet another one.
This needs to have Moonwalker, RoboCop vs Terminator, Ecco 2, Batman Returns (CD/MD - don't care which version). Sonic is an absolute must because it wouldn't be SEGA if they left him out 😂😂😂
@River3636 Why no-one let alone Sega hasn't up to this point done that has got to be either some really slow and not with it corp big wigs are thinking or there's too many 3rd parties to deal with to get have all the rights to their catalog in order to do it any justice.
@Serpenterror while some Sega games are on NSO, they are also on sale on switch and elsewhere. Sega gives players various options to buy and own games. Genesis mini was better than SNES mini. They do have "the best retro gaming experience without actually having a current gen console on the market". I stand by my words.
@MaseSco Batman Returns for Sega CD would absolutely break me. The Batmobile levels in that game seriously make me thump.
I wonder what kind of licencing had to go through to include Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water in the console.
The game was made by Namcot (now owned by Bandai Namco) and it is based on an anime formerly owned by Toho/NHK, which went to GAINAX (the actual animation studio that made most of the show), and then as a joint property between khara (the producers of Rebuild of Evangelion) and NHK.
They had to deal with Bandai Namco, NHK and Studio Khara for it to be included.
Can someone, anyone tell me how I can play Dune 2? That’s all I want please and thank you
@Vyacheslav333 if that were to happen, what would it be modeled after, the CDX, a combo system that combined the Genesis with the SEGA CD? The US Exclusive Model 3, which was incompatible with the 32X? Kinda pushing the boundaries, there, don'tcha think?
@Slowdive How do you know that it's slated for February 2023?
Probably done buying mini consoles here. Already own several and found aside from the turbografx mini I don't really play them long term.
If a dreamcast or saturn mini comes out I will reconsider.
My desired N/A games include:
Sega CD: Sonic CD, Starblade, Ecco the Dolphin: Tides of Time, Eternal Champions CD, Snatcher, Final Fight CD, Sega Classics Collection (5 Pack Version), Sewer Shark, Lunar, Lunar 2, Afterburner, & Shadow of the Beast II
Genesis: Columns III, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Golden Axe III, Streets of Rage III, Outrun, Outrun 2019, Super Street Fighter II, Rocket Knight Adventure, Quackshot, Strider, Vectorman 2, Virtua Racing, Shinobi III, Sonic 3D Blast, Shadow of the Beast, Ms. Pacman, Earthworm Jim 2, Afterburner II, & Super Off-Road
32X: Knuckles Chaotix, Cosmic Carnage, Afterburner, Virtua Fighter, Space Harrier, Virtua Racing, Moto Cross, & Metal Head
@BionicDodo I had never heard of Future Cop LAPD until your comment, let alone that it was once called Future Strike. It looks good. Now I want a Strike Collection even more. I played Jungle Strike a few years ago and I felt it held up pretty well.
@OorWullie There was also a game for PC, X360 and PS3 back in 2013 called Thunder Wolves that played quite a bit like the Strike games, although with a much sillier tone. I bought it for 79p in the current Steam sale and have been enjoying it in small sessions.
Oh now is THE (emulated) 68000 HEART ON FIRE!
Seriously though: reportedly Alien Soldier was released in North America on the Sega Channel back in the day. I wonder what the title screen said. As obviously the European "FOR MEGADRIVERS CUSTOM" is completely nonsene (as opposed to "almost completely").
(okay, for that joke, apparently the MEGADRIVERS line is in both, but the 68000 line is an extra line in the Japanese)
All I'm interested in is the cyber stick that looks amazing. Keeping an eye for when I can preorder it. Will be great to use for Mame.
I still have my Mega Drive Mega CD 32X Dreamcast and all other systems of the time along with all games I bought for them so no need for this. I particularly like going back to Knuckles Chaotix and Ecco the Dolphin Defender of the Future.
I am hoping for a release in the U.K (Europe) I was very tempted to order one from over seas, however as a youtuber pointed out the games may not be in English.
Skies of arcadia Port seems to be the furthest thing from their mind. Smh. It's easy money. I just want to play it on my switch.
I originally went from rolling my eyes to seeing a Mega Drive mini 2 was announced until I saw the list of Sega CD games and then I wanted one. Now that it's been almost a month and no word of international release I figure it might not be coming though. If it does, some of those games will definitely change unless they decide to do like the TG16/PCE mini did. That was a weird release lol
Still no sign of Pulseman, Crusader of Centy, Outrunner, Warsong, and Rocket Knight Adventures. Not sure why it's so difficult for Sega to acquired those for their mini.
I wish they would add some Master System games or create a Master System mini too. Some of the Alex Kidd and Wonderboy games have been re-released as of late but it would be nice to have some other older games like Dynamite Dux, Teddy Boy, Paper Boy, The Simpsons: Bart vs The Space Mutants, Ariel Assault, Psycho Fox and The Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck.
That's really good news, but I didn't expect any game available on one of Mega Drive Mini 1's region variants to repeat. That's a first.
@Morph You mean a CD add-on for the Mk1 mini? If so it already exists.
Over the years, there have been quite a few Sega games that I wanted to replay. And I have, through the Mega Drive Classic collection and separate releases on Switch. So, I'm not buying. Besides, scalpers will be all over this.
Worth it for Virtua Racing alone.
it is coming to the us in october...
Stop releasing these cheap plastic consoles, I bought sega genesis mini and regret already, the controller also feels cheap. Just release all these games to Nintendo switch and ps4.
Nice I hope the Lunar games, Final Fight CD, and Popful Mail made it to the Sega Genesis Mini 2 as well.
I just played Popful Mail for the first time last night, and what a fun game. I can't believe I never heard of it until recently. Hopefully it'll come to the US version.
I'm think I'm sold now that Final Fight CD is included
Final Fight CD! The best version; superior to the arcade AND has the best (see also; worst) voiceover in the intro.
“Jessica?”
“My sweetheart since childhood”.
Final Fight CD has a freaking amazing soundtrack
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_YK31P5IFI&list=PL459CDC89F6070103
This is totally straight from an 80's buddy cop flick
so both lunar games are coming to the japanese version that gives me hope the american version will get them as well..
This just got a lot more interesting. Both Lunar games, Final Fight CD. Things just get better and better.
I passed on the first one, but this one is much more interesting. Lets hope the SEGA Genesis Mini 2 sees similar games. I do prefer the look of the Model 1, but with a 6 button controller, and this list of games, this is instilling hope, not something I can say much with SEGA these days.
I am glad SEGA is releasing this as an independent item. I do not want this tied to something that might go obsolete in the future.
Good additions announced today. I have both pre-ordered. If all these additions get announced for the US version I'll probably cancel my Japanese order.
We need Quackshot: Starring Donald Duck!!
If we get a Saturn system with Dragon Force and Panzer Dragoon Saga, you can have allllllll my money, which is like 33 bucks!
Were Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers and Fatal Fury 2 Mega CD games? I ask because people were saying that this is a Mega CD games collection 🤔.
Whoa, the Luna games... now you have my attention.
Ok so I hope FF CD, and the Lunars both go to the US model as well.
Really want to see Road Avengers but I get that they probably wouldn't want to stuff it full of FMV games. Glad not to see crap like Night Trap and that FMV dreck.
@Banjo- Nope. They are Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games.
Really cool they landed both Lunar games though I won't rest easy until they and Popful Mail are confirmed for the Western version of the system and my worst fear of them being replaced by games like Wild Woody and Sewer Shark is put to rest.
I know the Wondermega was the Japanese version of the X'Eye combined Genesis+CD console (which arrived in the US far too late and too expensive to become much more than a collector variant of the console), but what is Wondermega Collection?
I'm hope that the Fahrenheit will be included in the console. Especially, 32X CD version, not the downgraded Sega CD one. 32X CD version was exclusive for the NA region, sadly.
@Serpenterror Outrunners IS announced for the US version. (as well as the original, seems only 2019 was included in the first console).
There is a remake of Warsong (Langrisser) and its sequel already released on Switch.
@KingMike Wondermega Collection is a sample disc bundled with Japanese Wondermega consoles. It contains four CD+G karaoke songs and four games. Three of them are enhanced versions of Sega Game Toshokan service games that are Paddle Fighter, Flicky and Pyramid Magic. The remaining one is Quiz Scramble, which would later be released separately as Quiz Scramble Special.
@KingMike
Unfortunately, the Genesis port of OutRunners is pretty bad and doesn't really capture the feel of the fantastic arcade version.
If the North American version gets Lunar that makes this appealing, but it seems highly unlikely. Both games were localized by Working Designs and I have no idea who owns their work these days. I can't think of a single Working Designs localization that has seen re-release in the last decade.
Please prove me wrong though.
@RudeAnimat0r since japan is getting both lunar games.that were released in the us i see no reason why the north american version wont have both lunar games..
@RudeAnimat0r I'm sure Victor Ireland is still around on the Internet. He might even be getting into a flame war with a 12-year-old somewhere as we speak. I'm sure he'd be willing to talk if Sega wants to give him money.
I believe a couple of his localizations (Parasol Stars and Cadash) did make it onto the TurboGrafx Mini.
I'm sure Alundra was released on PSN as well.
@johnedwin Game Arts made the games and own the rights to them. They're a Japanese company, their inclusion over there is straightforward. Working Designs made the localizations for the West and they don't exist anymore and Game Arts probably doesn't own the translation work they did. I'm not saying it's impossible, it's just not a given.
@kingmike Ha, you might be right. Though I don't recall Vic and Sega parting in entirely amicable ways.
I do remember Alundra being rereleased, but I think that was probably outside of my vague decade guess I think it was on PS3, and as of yet hasn't made it back on PS Plus Premium.
@RudeAnimat0r i remember playing alundra on the ps1 when it first came out
We better get the port of Lunar 2 on the US version. There are currently no ways to play it.
@drunk_guy you could always get a real sega cd and buy the game on amazon for a hefty price
@johnedwin already did that for the xenosaga trilogy last year….. bought the ps2 and all three games and I think I’m good on making that a habit
Why Fatal Fury 2 when Fatal Fury Special exists?
@mikegamer so you’re right! I love this soundtrack, I’ve never played or heard final fight cd. Now I must have this. Also I never would’ve thought Mike Haggar would’ve sounded like that answering a phone, I always expected it to sound more like an 80s wrestler with a lot of jock itch and more spitting, not like a calm old man with legs crossed and arms folded.
The reveal video today was a fun watch - Truxton/Tatsujin and Final Fight CD will be total nostalgia trips, and given time I might try the Lunar games someday. There were some real curiosities on there like the Sumo game and Tricycle one that will be worth exploring a little.
Another 20 or so reveals to go! I hope Super Hang On or Super Monaco GP make the cut for the Japanese Mini 2. As much as I enjoyed my Genesis and Sega CD long ago, I can’t justify preordering the NA version Mini too…
Fingers crossed we get Snatcher for the NA Genesis Mini 2.
@drunk_guy Yeah, I’d love to see Lunar 2.
My, my, I am surprised so far!
Yeah the lunar games, final fight, snatcher, and popful mail are my most wanted. I’d get it for those.
Okay, I wasn't going to get one of these but the Lunar games hooked me. If those dont make it on to the US version, then I'll cancel my preorder. They should go ahead and toss Vay on there too to complete the list of Working Designs games. I'd also nominate Decap Attack, Shadow Dancer, Dark Wizard, and Corpse Killer for consideration.
I’m worried that snatcher / lunar / popful mail will not be offered in English - though on the last genesis mini, all (?) games great had a localized version see included on the Japanese version of the mini console.
Also crossing my fingers for Keiko flying squadron and Robo Aleste!
Couldn't they have gone for MK instead of another version of SF2? And where is Sonic 3, the other Ecco games, TJ&E2 and SoR1?
@Olliemar28 I like the Japanese list . It would be awesome if they could add at least popful and Lunar to Western release.
What would be even better is if segacd and hopefully saturn library would be added to Nintendo online or as a collection in shop. Come on Sega, take our money, just release them online.
the fact that it is taking so long to name more us games makes me worried.. we will not get the lunar games..
Sega needs to announce more games for the US version.
I would love a European release just for Lunar, Shining Force and Shin Megami Tensei alone….
Hopefully Sega doesn't troll us by giving us a crappier list. Popful Mail and the Lunar games needs to be on the Sega Genesis Mini 2. The lack of Snatcher, Rocket Knight Adventures, and Sonic 3 and Knuckles is disappointing though.
@shonenjump86 Seriously. It's kind of insane that those who pre-ordered it don't even know the full contents yet.
Dump it on a Switch cart and we'll talk.
@Silly_G
They kind of did already? Check out the Genesis Classics Collection cart on Switch. It's got a huge chunk of the games listed here (and on the Genesis Mini 1).
@RushDawg : I'm aware of that, but there are quite a few omissions.
I wish publishers would stick to releasing their catalogue titles on current generation hardware rather than pumping out these wasteful novelty units that will take up way too much physical space for what they have to offer.
@Silly_G Agreed on this.
I might get the Japanese one at this rate.
Wait. SMT was on genesis?! Ok yeah I am glad I preordered this.
@Silly_G
Unfortunately, retro compilations rarely include third party titles, so I don't see SEGA releasing this lineup as a cart. That said, you could come pretty close to the Genesis Mini 1 & 2 lineups (and even expand on them) with:
-Genesis Classics Collection
-Contra Collection (has Contra Hard Corps)
-Castlevania Collection (has Bloodlines)
-Disney Classic Collection (has a bunch of Genesis Disney games)
-Cowabunga Collection (will have Hyperstone Heist and Tournament Fighters)
-M2 Toaplan Garage Series (have a bunch of Toaplan Genesis shumps)
So there's lots of Genesis games to be had on Switch carts if that's what you're looking for.
There's literally zero hope of Knuckles' Chaotix being on this thing, right? I keep telling myself I don't need to dish out stupid money for a 32x add-on to finally play that game because SOMEWHERE it will be (legally) ported, and yet!
This, and deluding myself into thinking the Panzer Dragoon Saga source code will ever be found, are my most outlandish Sega fantasies.
Can they announce the european version soon?
@Ryu_Niiyama That's the Mega CD version which was only released in Japan. I don't think this will be available in the US version of the Sega Genesis Mini 2 unless Sega surprise us with an English localization.
@Serpenterror well obviously quite a few games are japan only but i can and hope to see both lunar games make it to north america..
Populous. That reminds me.
Funny that the US/EU is incompatible with most consoles. Likely because it lacks a Sega header the JP ROM does.
EA knew that it was busted and stuck a warning on the box. Example of EA being an awful cheapskate company even in 1991.
@Ryu_Niiyama It was a port of the Super Famicom original.
One Sega CD game I'd like to see is Keio.
Hope Snatcher makes it, considering Konami only released the Japanese (PCE) version recently.
@KingMike @Serpenterror
Thanks for the info everyone!
Wow that Japanese version is STACKED. My years of language study continue to pay off.
@johnedwin I hope so too but knowing this is Sega it may likely falls on deaf ears. Hopefully they prove me wrong.
I watched the game reveal announcement video today - nothing in this batch blew me away but it will be nice to try Ecco the Dolphin CD and see Populous again after so many years. I can probably do without the 3 Kingdoms and Sengoku war sims, but that Sengoku shooter Aleste looked interesting! There’s so many classics and curiosities on the Japanese Mini 2 that I feel my preorder is justified already.
The next reveal (for the final 10-ish games) is scheduled for next Friday 8/19, so we don’t have long to wait! I hope they can squeeze Super Hang-On into the Japanese Mini, too.
@rdm22
I would say you’ll have to keep waiting for any 32X games on a mini. In the MD Mini 2 debut video, Sega’s Okunari-san said initially he discussed the idea of a new Mini with M2, and they advised that Mega-CD games they could manage, but don’t bother asking for 32X or Saturn games. The bigger chip needed would make it too expensive, I gather.
I have no desire for this one but thumbs-up to those who do! Good luck hunting everyone!
Really sad the NA/PAL versions won't be getting the Lunar games. Maybe had something to do with the localization rights, but getting those on the US version would have been huge in my book.
No Snatcher, no purchase.
Also, maybe Lunar?
WAAAAAAAAAAARSOOOOOOOOOOONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I. Am. Over. The. Moon!!!
@sword_9mm I had forgotten completely about that game until I saw it listed and images of butterflies starting popping in my head. Would love to buy this as well if it came stateside (buying and importing sounds exhausting).
I do wish Revenge of the Ninja and or double switch were on there. But I am very excited to be called dogmeat in sewer shark
Wait a sec, Puyo Puyo SUN??? That was an N64, PS1 and Saturn game, but never was it a Mega Drive game! Hmmmmm...
Bummer no Lunar and no Mortal Kombat CD.
Dunno why they'd waste space on something like Night Trap.
Oh well; it's been pre-ordered on a whim so I guess I might get one if they have enough.
Both CD versions of Ecco! I emulated all these and they have amazing sound tracks.
Wow! No Snatcher on SEGA CD? Boooo!!!!
I wish they’d have released a new version of the mini with all games from 1 and all these new ones.
It’s going to be …. Weird… unplugging and switching between minis.
Anyway, this is some cool stuff here. I’ll probably end up getting one of them even though there are some obscure titles in there that I’ve never even really heard of. Now’s a great chance to check them out I guess.
There are some games that I wish had made the cut, but I do like what I see here.
No Snatcher and no Lunar! Thinking of canceling my pre-order.
Crusader of Centy is a surprise.
Though I remember now... didn't the game get separate US and European localizations? (with Atlus writing the US localization and Sega did the EU version themselves?)
Well, I guess if Sega owns Atlus now, it wouldn't be a problem.
I'm super let down by this. No LUNAR games for the West? No EARTHWORM JIM: SPECIAL EDITION for Sega CD (the best version of that game)? And, finally, the most egregious... no SNATCHER. I might cancel my pre-order.
@Bablommebite
You read my mind! LOL
Where is Willy Beamish, NHL and Third World War for Sega Cd? Wishful games for me. Is the loading improved for the Sega CD games?
Just for curiosity, I wonder which Night Trap it is. The original or the one that made history as "the time Nintendo censored a game that wasn't even on their console".
@Dman10
That's what I was wondering? How are the loading times for the Sega CD games?
No Pulseman = No buy
Really hope that game eventually comes to the SEGA Genesis - Nintendo Switch Online catalog.
such a missed opportunity for lunar 2 to be accessible in the west again
What a massive letdown for the western version. None of the heavy hitters for Sega CD that people want.
Aaaand Popful Mail and the Lunar games were left out for the West while Sewer Shark got added. Dang it, I jinxed it with my previous comment...
None of the Working Designs translations were ever going to make it to the Western release.
The original publishers do not own the rights to those translations.
@NeonPizza That's because Japanese devs hand-coded their own sound drivers, whereas US devs just used GEMS, which was severely limited by comparison.
No Starblade for US? No translation issues like the WD games and it even got a US release.
Still might go for the US version since it has a few solid exclusives like Ristar and Golden Axe II and a good chunk of the JP exclusives are RPGs that only have their JP versions.
@AllieKitsune
Not every game that used GEMS sounded bad. Lots of great soundtracks used GEMS like Earthworm Jim, Toejam and Earl, Aladdin, etc.
So excited Europe it’s getting it too ! Gonna be watching like a hawk to make sure I don’t miss out on the pre order !!!
Even though I’m sure this will be worth a good penny one day, I preordered this to keep but I may cancel. It has final fight cd but the lunar games, popful mail, and snatcher would have won me over.
I’m glad to hear Europe is getting this as I’ve seen quite a few from there that want it, still no for Canada tho?
For a while there I was grabbing all the micro consoles. But they just sat around looking pretty. Another Genesis isn't what most fans were hoping for. They could have easily crammed most of these onto their first release. If it was just CD titles, that would be something. Make a micro Sega CD attachment, it'd be cute. Ideally, Sega would just put out some stellar compilations for modern platforms and PCs. Genesis, Dreamcast, Saturn, etc., which can all be emulate quite well
It's almost worth it just to play Desert Strike again.
I've never played this console, but I always love the mini consoles, definitely going to try and nab one for Christmas!!
No Lunar games was enough to cancel the pre order. What a shame.
I hope M3 works on this like they did with the first one, I'm happy that it will come out with Desert Strike though, now I've got to keep an eye out for when pre-orders go live. I'm sure Nintendo Life will let us know.
@EarthboundBenjy maybe it's the CD version? who knows though
no lunar games a easy no buy
why could not sega make a deal with victor ireland? so that both lunar games and popful mail could be included in the us version
@johnedwin What's the chances that the Japanese Mega Drive 2 you can put language settings in for English?
why could sega not include dark wizard for the mini since they published the game..
Well, im still getting this...but im very said that the Working Designs JRPGs are not included...
@EarthboundBenjy OOF
Neither of the Lunar games? Not even Popful Mail?
Hard pass.
No Lunar, no thank you.
Instead of Lunar and Popful Mail we got Sewer Shark and Night Trap? Such a letdown there Sega and still no Rocket Knight Adventures. Good thing I didn't pre-order.
@Serpenterror Agreed. Nor Snatcher for that matter. I’m going to wind up getting it I’m sure though, but it’s a missed opportunity.
US/EU lineup is a bit underwhelming compared to JP but it still has enough to justify a purchase. Really disappointed I won't get to play Popful Mail though...
@dkxcalibur thinking the same thing
Gonna start brushing up on that Japanese.
❌️No thanks; My Hackchi MD1 Mini is sufficient.
@Pj1 I guess it’s possible, I’m actually going to hold onto my preorder until we see if this thing has any other surprises like that. The turbografx mini did offer us both libraries after all. This being a limited, primarily Japanese release like the turbografx, could make that a good possibility.
Wasn't Battle toads part of this sega?
Thanks for the list, I'll pass on it this time around.
Again, a nice replica made in china riddled with input lags that will sell to "nostalgic" zoomers and hipsters something we can do form almost 25 years on PC.
