As you've probably seen, the new Min Min Super Smash Bros. Ultimate amiibo is now available in-store. If you are planning on adding this one to your collection, here's your PSA that this new amiibo based on the fighter from the ARMS series might not actually need to be unboxed to be used.
As highlighted by a user (with a North American Min Min model) on the amiibo subreddit, this new amiibo's packaging may not have an "NFC blocker tag", which prevents Nintendo fans from scanning the NFC figure while it's still inside the box.
There are all sorts of theories floating about as to why this particular amiibo can be scanned, but it seems this change might have happened before Min Min - with the Twitter account 'Amiibo News' noting how this has supposedly been possible since the re-release of Kirby amiibo:
@AmiiboNews - "Fun fact: Starting with the re-release of the Kirby amiibo, Nintendo removed the foil that prevented you from scanning amiibo while in the box. In-box collectors rejoice!"
We tested out our own boxed Min Min amiibo here at Nintendo Life and were also able to successfully scan it into Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Have you had any luck yourself? Leave a comment down below.

That's a neat change, but some people are fine with unboxing amiibos or just put amiibos in jars, so it's not something that'll impact the multiverse. Still very cool though for those who collect amiibo.
Too late in the game for this to make any difference for me now.
I just wish Nintendo would bloody restock those Loftwing amiibo, which is now the only amiibo figure missing from my collection (the only other ones I’m missing as the Skylanders ones, which I don’t care for, and a handful of amiibo cards).
No Amibo I've ever purchased could be used in the box. Too bad they only made this change now because I always disliked having to rip or cut the packaging open.
@Silly_G Have you checked Target? My local Target always quite a bit in stock.
Cool, so you can just take a walk in the store and unlock characters.
This has been the case for European and Australian amiibo for some time, they've lacked the silver foil at the bottom since at least the release of the Octolings. I tried reporting that on Reddit years ago but it looks like the text in the post didn't actually become visible for others to read?

Edit: More evidence to support this:

Cool idea except that you still have the ugly packaging as a cage.
It’s like having a laptop and keeping the original protection sheet on the screen. 🤷♂️
I wasn't even aware Min Min was out, guess should pick her up soon.
@Lizuka Min Min just came out.
@dimi
"But is it stealing? Should people get jail time for this? The debate rages. Join us at 21:00 as we talk to people from both sides of this new moral dilemma. Warning: includes scenes which some viewers may find distressing."
@DogDetective : I’m from Australia, and our version of Target has significantly downsized their home entertainment department a few years ago, almost to the point of nonexistence (and I rarely set foot in there unless shopping for something else).
When picking up the Min Min amiibo yesterday at a different department store chain, they had no other amiibo in stock whatsoever, so, they’ve become less of a priority for brick and mortar retailers as the toys-to-life fad is virtually dead, but Nintendo nevertheless issues the odd figurine for collectors.
Min min is a great looking Amiibo. The quality of the Amiibo since the Wii u days have gone up.
Did they silently change the range of the NFC reader on the j`Joy-con and/or the Pro Controller? I've tried so hard to scan the Shovel Knight amiibos in their boxes without success because the amiibos are too far away from the reader inside the boxes. And no, the SK amiibos don't have the NFC blocker tags inside the boxes either.
If so, this is great news.
I would unbox it anyway, but cool for those who wants to keep her in the box.
Buying something and then keeping it in the box is sooo dumb, in my opinion.
@Silly_G I think I've seen them at Best Buy recently. Of course, that's just me assuming you live in the U.S. and not somewhere else.
I really want this Amiibo in box or otherwise. Too bad Amiibo are nigh impossible to find in Japan, unless I want to pay like 300% as much on Amazon, which I kind of don't.
I never liked having to open up my amiibos (really, any of my figures or statues, but it's not like I'm ever going to sell them, so I guess it's okay. Plus, there would have been no way to use them.
I would like to add Min Min to my collection, but I will need to take her out of the box. I could get away with not unboxing my figures and statues, because I had the space to do it.
But after we remodeled my bedroom, I lost a lot of that space, most of it taken up by my new bed. We can't even put one of the shelves we had back up, the headboard is too big!
So I don't really have anywhere to put a boxed Min Min amiibo, even if I didn't want to take her out of the box.
@kurtasbestos Really? I always get mine day one from Yamada Denki or Labi, or whatever they call their stores. If there are ever restocks, it tends to be the place to get them too.
I remember this being a selling point for the Shovel Knight Amiibo back when that first released. Maybe they’re doing it as a cost cutting measure. Is there really a need for it anyway? I guess it was to stop people scanning them in store without buying them, but would that really make a huge impact on sales? I’m sure the main reason people buy them is to collect or because they like having the figures.
Oh no, that's gonna make me tempted to keep it in the box in case I ever want to sell it
But no, realistically I want to have it unboxed on my shelf like my other amiibo. I haven't bought an amiibo in a long time but I couldn't resist official Arms merchandise.
It's been like that since the 2019 smash wave came out
I don’t buy amiibos, but I really like the concept. I hope Nintendo keeps making them.
I could've sworn I had seen somewhere that this was a thing long before Min-Min or the Kirby reprints. Is it like how @nintyfanuk puts it in how it's been like this since 2019?
If it were easier to get them I would have maintained an unboxed collection because the packaging is so cool, but ah well. I open them like Cookie Monster now.
@Silly_G Man that's rough! Like @DogDetective indicated, the Loftwing amiibos are pretty easy to find here in the states. I was surprised to see them at Target, in fact, because ours had gotten rid of their amiibos stock as well. My only reliable place to shop for them in person was Best Buy and even that appeared to be diminishing.
However, ever since the Loftwing amiibos both stores have started carrying them more... Especially more recently with the Kirby restocks. It has me a bit excited about amiibo again!
Anyway, have you looked to see if you can purchase online from someone in the states? Since they're fairly plentiful, I can't imagine the prices would be significantly jacked up.
@AndyC_MK111 don’t forget this is the internet. Sarcasm is a main feature. ☺️
But again amiibo unpacked look much better then in the miiverse cage. 😁
That's cool I guess but I'll still open her. I think the only amiibo I ever scanned were the Splatoon ones, but I've opened most of them. I'm sure stuff like the Samus Returns amiibo are worth a lot more in the package but I don't buy these things to resell or let them sit in boxes. And that Metroid is so satisfying to squish.
Man I can’t wait till I get mine from Best Buy next Friday!
This is cool for those who want it in the box but yall should really unbox this one. The detailing is ridiculously insane on Min Min, and seeing it firsthand is very cool. For the only ARMS amiibo that will probably ever exist, they pretty much knocked it out of the park.
@FiveDigitLP : I should give it another look, but sadly, most US vendors don’t ship overseas (not to Australia anyway) and the prices on Amazon AU and the like are just silly (and eBay is no better) as they’re just reselling imported stock from around AU$60 (usually a fair bit higher) when the official retail price was a more reasonable AU$30.
@HotGoomba “it's not something that'll impact the multiverse” - Unlike your icon
The only reason I can see the blockers being a good idea from Nintendo's perspective is so that people don't take their Switch into a store and scan an amiibo without buying it. However, they were a thing before the Switch. But honestly, here in the UK, I don't know of any physical store that stocks them anymore, it's either Amazon, Nintendo store or the like.
@RainbowGazelle I hunted all over for the Metroid Dread Amiibos (okay, I went to Bic Camera and GEO) on the day of release but bought them on Amazon in the end because they were somehow still being sold at the normal price. As for Min Min, I would have tried hunting slightly harder but it didn't help that she got released on a holiday and I had to spend time with my family. He may only be 4, but I'll never forgive my son.
This would actually be a cool feature for collectors. Being able to use it without unboxing is certainly a plus.
Just keep the amiibo’s in a glass case or behind the counter on the shelf to avoid theft
@dimi What store still sells Amiibo on display in 2022?
If I'm lucky, the last Min Min amiibo is still available later today and I pick her up as well as the restocked Kirby and Meta Knight. Already have the restocked King Dedede. Here in Mexico, Gameplanet/Gamers only stocked like 100 for all Mexico, it's not even available on their online store.
The Loftwing amiibo (the only other amiibo I'm missing from those currently available) is still very available, but somewhat expensive.
@Threebcisum
Best Buys often have Amiibo, (and Limited Run games occasionally end up on sale too). It usually isn't enough to convince me to walk in.
@DogDetective When I went Christmas shopping at Target, I saw some Metroid Dread and Loftwing amiibo, and I was like "are these rare?"
@Silly_G try some EU/UK sellers, the UK my Nintendo Store still has stock of the Loftwing amiibo and as Australia is often grouped in with Europe you might find somewhere will ship to you for a reasonable price. Or if you're really desperate someone might offer to buy it and post it to you, if you're up for paying for it
Not a big deal depending if you're an amiibo collector, or someone like me who puts them in a cramped box.
@Silly_G try to see if its at a target near you. Theres a ton near me at Gamestops, Targets, and even sometimes Walmarts. If not, try to see if its available on amazon
As cool as this may be for certain collectors, this is an obvious sign that Nintendo cares less about amiibos. They obviously decided to remove the blocker from production to save money since the only amiibos coming out now don't unlock any exclusives in the games and are required to have in hand whenever you want to use whatever special features they do which in Super Smash's case is even less useful. There is a likely chance that Kazuya may be the last amiibo we get (assuming Disney may actually not be allowing the Sora amiibo since that info was left out of the direct)
Maybe there is a supply chain shortage on the blockers?
Why didn't they do thus sooner ?????
@Silly_G Well, if you're interested, I could try to locate one near me and send it to you if you're willing to pay the extra cost for shipping it to Australia. I don't have the faintest idea how much that would be though, and if it would be worth your while.
@FiveDigitLP : I can import them for around double the cost (and a local vendor has some stock at that price), but I’ve been reluctant as I’ve been hoping for a local restock at the MSRP. Paying double isn’t as bad as what I’ve had to pay for the Gold/Silver Marios (which pre-sold out, and I was overseas, so I couldn’t try my luck in-store), and the US/Japan exclusive golden Mega Man figure, all of which had cost me around $80 each if not in the early $100 range, and I don’t think it’s worth imposing upon you when the cost difference for the Loftwing figure after shipping (and state taxes) comes into play, but thank you for offering.
@Silly_G Alright. No worries! Just trying to help a fellow collector.
