Pikmin Bloom may not have the same userbase and profile as Pokémon Go, but Niantic's take on the franchise is nevertheless a rather pleasant AR experience. In our Pikmin Bloom review we praised its laidback approach and its healthy, feelgood vibe. It seems that Niantic is eager to keep the app progressing, too.
As reported by Eurogamer, the app is getting an update on 28th April with new weekly challenges, which particularly encourage you to take part and connect with friends.
They'll be optional challenges each week, and the first set will be to walk 50,000 or 100,000 steps; progress will track in real time with rare nectars as rewards. Even if you don't hit the target, though, you will still get something for your trouble.
For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere we're starting to get into Springtime, so now could be an ideal opportunity to head out for some walks and give Pikmin Bloom a try.
Let us know in the comments if you play Pikmin Bloom, or perhaps if you're tempted to try it out alongside these challenges in the coming weeks.

Despite my absolute love for the Pikmin franchise and my bullheaded determination to get into this app…. It’s tough to care. I’m at level 40, have raised countless Pikmin, maxed out their hearts to keep getting the blandest possible decor, keep defeating endless mushrooms and I’m genuinely baffled where the sense of payoff is. I know it’s not “that kind of game” but it needs SOMETHING. Rare nectars to plant flowers that have no significant effect except to be planted and disappear a few days later? Neat.
Give me My Nintendo Platinum Points from this. Then we'll talk.
This game needs a big update, I don’t feel like I’m progressing towards anything besides maxing out my pikmin
Pokémon GO was a stroke of genius, and I miss the absolute societal frenzy that it caused in its early days (the likes of which we're unlikely to ever see again), but I struggle to understand Niantic's thought process when throwing this together as Pikmin isn't exactly a pop culture darling. It's beloved to its relatively modest fanbase, but matters little to all else.
@RobotReptile I just see it as something to get me active and moving on occasion. Go for a walk. Take a few more steps after a work out. Only been doing it for about six weeks. Will probably get to the point u are and not care too much, but it will be an option.
I think the appeal of this “game” is simply adding to your step count. If you’re looking for some kind of payoff beyond that it’s probably not for you. It would be nice to have additional goals but that’s not why I keep using this. Should reach 2 million steps sometime this week!
I do enjoy trying to collect all the decor Pikmin, although it’s tough if you generally walk the same route every day.
I’m still enjoying Pikmin Bloom, currently Level 63, soon to be 64, with 23 badges. I think the massive jump between badges could be balanced better, and it needs some new ideas, but I’m still engaging with it every day.
I love Pikmin but I never used this app at all just never seemed appealing but maybe I’m missing out
@rockodoodle yea, totally hear you on that. It got me walking my dog a bit more when I first started it. It was interesting unlocking new Pikmin types too, but it seems ill paced for the medium and long term.
Still. Not complaining too hard, just figured they could’ve fed all the effort into a payoff. Like a neat li’l Pikmin hive/town growing, or risking a few Pikmin to take down a Bulborb or something. 🤷♂️
@RobotReptile Guess what... somewhere around level 50 you stop finding seedlings almost entirely. I easily log 10,000 on my daily commute and I get MAYBE 2 a day, when I used to have so many that I had to recycle them pretty regularly. Not to mention the fun pattern of hanging around one of the icons for which I don't have all the decor Pikmin only to be rewarded (if I'm rewarded at all) with a roadside seedling. I think once I hit level 60 in a week or so I'm going to call it quits because I'm already at 20 medals, and the ridiculous amount of effort required for most of the medals remaining isn't going to be fun or interesting.
