Honestly I’m not surprised. Mario Kart 8 is the best family friendly game for the Switch that literally anyone can play. I work in retail and it’s always the first game I mention when people ask about Switch games.
Was impressed and unimpressed at the same time. Games like Mario Golf and Fall Guys were fun to see. Not a big fan of much else though. I’ve always wanted to play octopath traveler but it never dropped down in price so I never picked it up. I have a feeling that’ll be the same with the new one too sadly.

Unfortunately this direct seemed to be more quantity than quality. At least we’ll be getting more games this year though.
Seems like Nintendo focus has always been on younger players. Is that such a bad thing? When the kids grow up they’ll be able to tell kids about the old Nintendo games they played when they were their age and honestly will probably be able to play Nintendo’s next generation of games because of the similarities between Nintendo games from old to new. Honestly I’m glad that they are focused on kids because sometimes making more accessible games makes games appeal to a wide variety of people that might not have been the intended audience.
I think it is somewhat in the middle. I really wish there would have been better graphics. Mostly in the landscapes of the game. I’m all fine with having the Pokémon look cartoonish but it’s be cool to have a more lifelike world. Also somehow the performance wasn’t that great either. I’ve seen the frame rate drop many times which seems weird because I’ve seen games with better graphics run smoother on the switch. Maybe the development team was busy working on the 3DS version and Nintendo was like, “We want it on the Switch.” So they didn’t have the development time to create a whole new design/game. Just kind of feels unfinished, even to this day with all of the DLC out. I feel like I abandoned this one faster than the past titles.
With all that being said I did enjoy the game. The gameplay going back to where the series was before Gen VII (my most hated Pokémon games and the only Pokémon games I haven’t fully completed to this day) was a nice refreshing choice.
Overall, with all of the DLC being out and the game being “completed”, I give it a 7/10.
Edit: Also, probably an unpopular opinion, bring back Mega Evolutions. They made much more impact on the competitive scene than Z-Moves and Dynamax did.
I bought the split pad pro Daemon X Machina edition and they were ok. I ended up returning them. They were a lot bigger than I expected. Also they felt kind of cheap. I don’t think I would buy them again but I’m sure many people like them and they have great thumbsticks/triggers/buttons. Just not for me.
Not sure how 2015 was the worst year. That year on the Wii U we got Splatoon, Xenoblade Chronicles X and Mario Maker just to name a few. 3DS titles were pretty sparse that year though. The only ones worth naming are Majora’s Mask 3D, FE Fates and M&L: Paper Jam. We also got a small hardware update in the form of the New 3DS/3DS XL
2016 was worse in my opinion. We got Mario & Ssonic, Color Splash, and Twilight Princess HD. For 3DS there was Pokémon S&M, Kirby: Planet Robobot and everyone’s favorite, Mertroid Prime: FF.
I like how all standard Pokemon games have always been on a portable console (without a doubt inferior in specs to the home console) and when they decide to bring it to the more powerful console they decide they can’t include all of the Pokémon? Was there not enough space on the Switch cartridge (seems like the 3DS cartridges handled the space just fine)? Was it too demanding for the new hardware to include them all? lol I mean I know it takes a long time to add new animations for each Pokemon but come on. You can’t say they didn’t have enough time. They’ve been working on Sword and Shield for years.
I’ll still play the game and I’m sure I’ll love it. Just seems like they are putting out an incomplete game.
After reading I have found one mistake. Gold, Silver, and Crystal were all exclusive to the Gameboy Color. They weren’t on the Gameboy as they were the first games that were in full color.
I’ll definitely be picking up Pokémon no question. I really want Civ 6 but I don’t want to spend $60 on it. I’ll wait until it drops down to $30 to pick it up.
@Sakura I hear ya. I'm not sure Nintendo can convince me to move away from physical games when I get them for $10 off at launch at Best Buy. That will be a hard obstacle to overcome.
Honestly I'm not surprised. Animal Crossing looked like a complete failure from the get go and Mario Tennis is probably the least exciting Mario sports game. Mario Strikers would have a killer holiday title but what kind of company would listen to its fans/consumers.
Looks like Zenoblade should be a good game though. Problem is 60-70% of people who own a Wii U won't buy it because they are kids/families.
Just some more PR bs but this time the bs is somewhat right. I don't think Star Fox would have made that big of a difference in pushing consoles. That being said the game will sell less units when it releases because it won't be there for the holidays.
Agreed investors have lost confidence since Kimishida-san took over. If I was an investor I would have lost confidence as well. However it's not because of Kimishida-san. It's because there has been no announcements, along with the delay of Star Fox, since Iwata's passing. Overall Nintendo's stock has fallen over the past few years so I wouldn't worry too much about investor confidence. If I was an investor I'd wait until the day that Nintendo announces the NX and sell that day (it will probably be at the highest value for a while at that point, depending on how the NX is perceived of course.). I don't really see Nintendo stock prices rising until then. Then again I'm not a financial expert.
Overall I'd say that the best Mario platformer would have to be Super Mario Galaxy (2 is excellent but it's mostly a copy with Yoshi). Super Mario Galaxy revolutionized Mario platformers with creative gameplay, a great story, and graphics that were pretty good for Nintendo at the time.
For the older games I actually preferred Super Mario Bros. 2 (bring on the haters). It was the first game that allowed you to play as Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad. Each had their own special abilities which carry on to this day in new Mario games as well as Super Smash Bros.
I like classic Disney songs. Heck even Disney theater releases have good songs these days. Unfortunately the new shows/TV movies on the Disney Channel don't interest me at all. I miss the golden years of hand drawn animation shows. I'm sure kids will love it but hardcore Disney fans, like myself, will stay away.
@Uberchu Yes they have Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Bowser, DK, etc. Where all of the cool ones (Marth, Robin, Ike, Wii Fit Trainer, Pit, Ness, Rosalina, Villager, etc.)? I guarantee you 99% of stores don't even have half of the amiibo that have been released.
Also I don't believe I used the words "a lot" when referring to amiibo. I said "a lot of people don't have rare amiibo" meaning that there are a large amount of people who don't have rare amiibo.
@Cyber-BLP-- It still could be hard to find some costumes since a lot of people don't have rare amiibo. I imagine someone who has all of them will create a stage with all of them.
@zeldazero I'm guessing it won't have multiplayer but who knows. It would be cool to have someone designing on the gamepad and someone playing it on the tv.
The game looks great and I can't wait to get it! However, I really don't care about the amiibo feature. I can't get any of the cool costumes because the amiibo aren't available.
PS: It would be cool if they did something special for the golden Mario. Make it the golden transformation from New Super Mario Bros. 2. Of course this is only a dream because the Gold Mario is exactly the same as the regular one.
@MagusDiablo I was thinking the same thing. This is supposed to be a game that emphasizes creativeness. Paying for levels that help create new ideas for new levels takes away from the whole theme of the game. However, if money is to be made Nintendo is the company to do it, so I could see Nintendo doing something like that.
Honestly I don't want a hybrid system. The hardware is fine the way it is now. What needs some updating is the software. Cross-buy and an account system are the most wanted features for me. They could also use some more third party support but that is unlikely at this point since they seem to have no relationship with anybody.
Here is a question for everyone here. Zelda is coming out for the Wii U sometime next year, however, will it also be a launch title for the NX, similar to Twilight Princess?
Sakaguchi has the same favorite weapon as me! While I love trying out other weapons to see what their features are, I always come back to the Jet Squelcher. It has a fantastic range meaning you can cover a lot of area without being seen, you can take out enemies at from a distance and it has a great special weapon in the Inkstrike.
And what about those watching at home? What do you have to offer them since they aren't at E3 playing the games on the show floor?
Edit: So transformation (the theme of the direct) is taking place in the near future? What do you have in mind because I didn't see anything drastically different?
@LUIGITORNADO I don't think the Universal deal has anything to do with video games or character rights. Universal only got rights to build Nintendo themed rides.
I really hope that Nintendo and Disney get together and do something cool. I love both companies and I think that incorporating Nintendo characters into Disney Infinity could be cool. I also think that Disney Infinity characters are better quality than Skylanders and Disney could help Nintendo with amiibo production. A partnership like this is unlikely though because of the new deal with Skylanders. But I can dream right?
@shani Agreed. I love my Wii U and there are a bunch of great games for it. However, I think that sales have forced Nintendo to move on to NX faster which is now causing less games to come out for Wii U, which is frustrating to Wii U owners.
3.4 million is going to be a tough number to hit. I'm not sure what Nintendo's thought process was. This past fiscal year Nintendo only sold 3.37 million units and that's with Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. coming out during that period. Unless Zelda Wii U comes out by March 31, 2016 (it has pretty much been confirmed that it isn't) I don't see them getting even close to 3.4 million. I'm sorry but there is no way that Super Mario Maker and Yoshi's Wolly World will ship more units than Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. combined.
Here are the total sales figures of current gen home consoles as of February 18, 2015.
PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 19,052,353
Xbox One Total Sales: 11,298,462
Wii U Total Sales: 9,137,844
I have a feeling Xbox One sales will go up quite a bit with the announcement of backwards compatibility. I think the PS4 sales rate will be a bit higher. Unfortunately I think Wii U sales will be quite a bit lower compared to the other consoles.
Nintendo seems to be phasing out the Wii U however they seem to still be supporting the 3DS with some fairly good spinoff titles. If the NX is a portable and handheld device in one, why wouldn't they slow down 3DS game development as well? This makes me think that the NX will most likely be a home console but it could connect to a more powerful version of the 3DS.
I'm not sure what the sales predictions are for the 3DS but unfortunately I'm not sure they will reach those figures either. There are some great games coming this fall and early next year but there are any standout titles (the omission of a main Pokemon game will hurt sales this fiscal year).
Edit: I know what someone is going to say so I'll go through the dialogue now.
Someone: "Well Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. are still out."
Me: "True."
Someone: "So Super Mario Maker and Yoshi's Wolly World will convince those who haven't bought a Wii U for Super Smash Bros. or Mario Kart 8 to buy one."
Me: "So you are telling me that there are 3.4 million people who haven't bought a Wii U because they were waiting for Super Mario Maker and/or Yoshi's Wolly World. I don't think so."
It would be kind of weird to have players fighting in volleyball since the net usually separates the two teams. I can see blocking being a cool feature an possibly fighting in midair but i'm not sure how that would work.
All that being said, I still would have bought this game because I have loved the Mario Strikers series.
Edit: The Peach, Bowser, Samus, and Fox costumes in Bayonetta didn't violate character honor? Seems like that was a fairly violent game.
I kind of dislike Miiverse nowadays and I haven't been on there since Sakurai stopped posting Super Smash Bros. pics. They have the rules so strict that it's hard to communicate with fellow gamers without getting banned. I think one of the major culprits is Pokemon. It's great to communicate with other trainers on Miiverse but that's pretty much where the fun ends. If you want to trade or battle someone you have to use another service to communicate because of the rules against posting friend codes. Being able to trade and battle with trainers from Miiverse would make my gaming experience so much better but Nintendo has it on lockdown.
Plus the character limit is annoying.
Note: I've been warned for posting my friend code once (on the Pokemon page). I have not been banned yet.
