Nintendo has revealed the name of its new membership programme - the one introduced to replace the outgoing Club Nintendo system.
During a special investors strategy briefing in Tokyo, CEO Tatsumi Kimishima announced that the service would be known as "Nintendo Account" and, as expected, would link traditional Nintendo hardware with PCs and smartphones.
It was also revealed that Nintendo will use a cloud-based data service to exchange game data between mobile games and console games.
More news as it develops.

I really hope that it is like Steam or apple ID
The 1st DeNA mobile game has been delayed to March 2016. Investors aren't gonna like that.
Most creative name: 2/10.
Let's see how well this new membership does. It could be convenient and promising to use.
Straight, simple and to the point. I'm okay with the name.
of course it was delayed
Could not be any more vague at the moment, I'm still hoping for a PS+ or Xbox live kinda thing
@Captain_Toad lol! XD. At least it's straightforward, so that's something
new smartphone game is called miitomo wtf
I hope that they make Mobile Games!
@TheMonadoSenpai MiiTomo?! cheap.
Sweet!
I wonder... maybe 3DS is included in the cloud storage... and cross buy will happen?
from the description it doesnt even sound like a game it sounds like streetpass on smartphones
Looks like the first game is called MiiTomo.
It's free to play and will attract paid add-ons. The game involves Miis who communicate with each other without you knowing. Intended to help those who are hesitant to talk to others and to reveal a side of your friends you didn't know previously.
Huh.
But will it have a good reward system?
Finally. Saving my 3ds and wii u to the Google and icloud was far too clunky
@IceClimbers Based on first impressions, it sounds lame.
Nintendo being too direct with the name, for shame!
They should have named it something unique and creative.
I can't believe they are openly copying Sony and PSN Cloud.
I think miiverse on smartphones is first app.
The new Miitomo game users will design their own avatar or Mii's to communicate with other users
Brilliant name, I wonder who came up with that one. Maybe the EU splatfest organizers.
Do i hear save game backups ? What else would "cloud" stand for ?
Everything else would just be "server based" right ?
At least i hope that this is the case since i dont trust my WiiU HDD all that much
Well, that's certainly better news than the lack of a new Metroid.
NeoGaf is reporting that Nintendo's slides claim the new membership/Club Nintendo replacement is called My Nintendo and should be out by March 2016.
Cloud backup saves is really nice to have.. but they basically just announced the title
Hopefully they come up with a better name. That one's kind of...generic.
Boring name or not, this looks to be an interesting service. I'm hoping that the rewards will be as great (if not better) than Club Nintendo. I'm also hoping that the cloud service will give users a way to back up/store game saves that can be pulled down to a new system once you link your account.
@Trinexx
Nintendo Account is the name for new account system.
My Nintendo is the new name for the new loyalty program.
You can earn points by buying and playing, then redeem those points for physical or digital rewards.
I guess they can always change the name later. Maybe it'll grow on me. I'd love to see the names they considered but decided not to use.
@remlapgamer
I doubt they will change the name, because people have been wanting Nintendo to using direct names instead of confusing names.
@Xenocity "can't believe they are openly copying Sony and the cloud"
???
That's like saying, Xbox actually uses a controller. Can't believe they're blatantly copying Nintendo.
Sony doesn't have a monopoly on the cloud or user accounts or memberships. This is just the technology of our day. Everyone uses it.
@JaxonH
It sounds just like PSN, hopefully without the horrible PSN backend and database.
Nintendo is supposed to be original not a "ME TOO" company like Sony.
Nintendo is just taking the easy way out.
I wonder if any of the companies who own network and cloud patents will file suit...
Technically Sony copied Xbox Live and Steam with PSN and it's cloud data.
@Raichu It's a combination of Mii and tomodachi, wich means friend. Hmmm, I think MiiFriend sounds better.
@agqwestern Nope. Pay for service when they don't use the profits to put in extra servers, particularly in Aus? I don't pay AU$60 to $80 for Gold, I woudn't pay for a similar Nintendo one.
@Xenocity So if someone has a good idea then Nintendo should stubbornly ignore it? So Nintendo should go back to the SNES or NES controller and not copy Sony's dual stick layout? They shouldn't have HDMI outputs or disc based media or online or accounts because others used it first?
Was there any mention of a date?
People complaining about the name. Because other similar services have such interesting names right? Oh wait, no they don't. They all basically just have their company/service name followed by a word that describes what it is.
Just look at Steam. You have Steam ID, Steam Cloud, Steam Big Picture, Steam In Home Streaming, Steam Guard. Or Apple where it's either i prefixes with iTunes, iPhone, iWatch, iCloud or "Apple" with Apple Music, Apple ID, Apple Pay, Apple TV.
So complain about the uncreative name if you want. But make sure you complain about literally every other name for every other service that exists.
Kewl. Data-sharing and cloud-saving is what I've been wishing for
@Einherjar The Cloud aspect would allow transfer of data between console and phone, which would allow data from one game unlock something in another game.
@Xenocity
I think you lack quite a bit of understanding.
Nobody "copied" anyone. It's just technology that is now standard. Cloud storage is used by EVERYONE. Charter, AT&T, heck even your local gas station probably utilizes "the cloud" in some way or fashion.
That's not copying. And filing suit? That's like saying someone could file suit because Nintendo consoles have internet access. Nobody owns the internet, just like nobody owns the cloud. Anyone and everyone uses it.
I really do think you need to do some research on this because nobody can file suit over common every day technology.
I could understand it Sony or MS came up with some innovative patent, but storing user information and game data is pretty much a given for any company that make games. Surprised it took them this long tbh
@MadAdam81 Yeah, sounds like Hyrule Warriors will be the first candidate for this. I still hope that there will be a savegame backup utility somehow.
My Nintendo is releasing alongside Miitomo in march 2016 http://mynintendonews.com/2015/10/29/my-nintendo-is-the-new-name-for-club-nintendo-replacement/
Got the following by (google) translating something on Nintendo's japanese site:
"First, you will be able to buy the Wii U and 3DS download software in Nintendo's official website.
Look at the introductory article and introduction video of software on a PC or smart device, if there is favorite software, and can be purchased on the spot, software purchased will be downloaded automatically to your Wii U and 3DS."
Go read over here!
http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/library/events/151029/05.html
What a boring name...
I've got a bad feeling about this Tatsumi Kimishima fella........
@JaxonH
Nintendo has incurred numerous lawsuits over Wii, DS, 3DS and Wii U over patent infringement including data streaming, internet based communications and e-commerce.
Nintendo is going to get a huge lashing in the press over Nintendo Account and it's cloud features for copying the competition instead of innovating or inventing something new.
They will probably get mocked by gamers to no end over it, just like Metroid Prime series is called a "Halo rip off" by "hardcore" gamers.
Poor translation yet nice message incoming:
Here is a little ahead of the story, but to save the save data of the game, such as character data in the cloud, even in software dedicated game machine, it is a service that can be utilized in a smart device app.
@Xenocity Thanks for the "My Nintendo" info. As soon as I saw the title "Nintendo Account" I assumed that was just for the cloud based saves and not the entire loyalty program, like Pokémon Bank doesn't make up all of the Pokémon website stuff. But it is Nintendo, so you never know.
So we'll have a NNID on our consoles connected to our Nintendo Account on mobile all linked up in My Nintendo for rewards and stuff, simple.
Err waiting for an article update guys! There seems to be some going back and forth as to what the actual new Club Nintendo's name is vs. what seems to be a new cloud based service.
Introducing: VIRTUAL AMIIBO. JUST LIKE AMIIBO BUT WITHOUT HALF THE FUNCTIONALITY.
@rjejr
I sent an email to staff about it.
Hopefully it will be posted tonight.
NeoGaf translation of the slides also claims you can spend points on DLC and game coupons too.
I hope the part of playing games gives you more points.
After losing 7 months of 3DS save data, the cloud service is most welcomed indeed.
Question is, will it all be free or paid subscription based?
@Xenocity
Those lawsuits involved actual inventions , like motion based gaming peripherals.
Not making an account that uses the internet to store data. Internet that nobody owns. You can't monopolize account systems. Might as well try to patent the air we breathe and file suit when anyone else uses it.
And as for this
"Nintendo is going to get a huge lashing in the press over Nintendo Account and it's cloud features for copying the competition instead of innovating or inventing something new.
They will probably get mocked by gamers to no end over it, just like Metroid Prime series is called a "Halo rip off" by "hardcore" gamers.
I don't see any lashing in the press. You let me know when that changes. I won't hold my breath. How do you "innovate something new" for user accounts? Leave the innovation to the games and hardware. This is an administrative necessity. And I don't know what your definition of "hardcore gamer is" but we are all hardcore gamers here and I don't see any of us calling Metroid Prime a Halo rip off.
In fact I don't see ANYONE saying that. And if there are, it's probably ignorant fanboys who never even played the game. Who cares what some uninformed fanboy says. It's not like they would ever buy the game anyways
I can't believe you actually believe what you're spouting. Really.
@Xenocity You really are one confused person.
Cloud based saves like Google Play Games? Sounds good.
How about using that cloud to farking host our accounts instead of continuing to tie them to our devices? If they can make their new account/NX platform closer to Google Play in functionality, they'll definitely have some things that's much better than what PSN and XBL have.
EDIT: Oh nvm, it's just to transfer small data between the smartphone games and the console games. Guessing its for costumes and whatnot. Eh. PSO2es stuff.
I wonder if the Nintendo Account will be a rebranded Nintendo ID with expanded features....
Cloud stuff? Okay, you lost me. Screw that noise, it's premium trash.
I hope this new account system syncs everything on our Nintendo consoles (sorta how the Vita is with the PS4 in terms of friend lists)
@skywake Don't forget this is the fanbase that almost broke the internet with its rants over 4 words in a Zelda game.
@Kaze_Memaryu
It's just optional data transfer stuff. Say, for costumes or items.
@AVahne What I find odd is how the accounts seem to be stored outside the device despite being tied to one. Even if you lose the device, the account can still be recovered.
@VeeFlamesNL: Such complaint. So laughable.
@Raichu @TheMonadoSenpai It may sounds strange but it makes perfect sense for it's Japanese title. It's probably going to be called MiiFriend(s) (space? no space?) in English. In this case Tomo is short for Tomodachi which means friend. It seems more let a communication app such as LINE but maybe your mii does 50% of the talking? There's too little information on it to really know what it is.
@rjejr Nintendo Account is the overall account system - basically a rebranding of NNID. My Nintendo is the loyalty program that's part of Nintendo Account.
@IceClimbers In the article that was posted while you were commenting here, it made it sound like NNID would be separate from Nintendo Account b/c people could log into Nintendo Account with either a NNID or Facebook or Google or Twitter.
Did you happen to come across a launch date? I know Nintendo said Fall 2015 so that usually means March 2016 to them. I swear nobody at that company can read a calendar.
@LztheQuack
Only through a phone call, which I now accept as being a possibility for Nintendo. Still, this shouldn't necessary. We should be able to freely activate and deactivate our devices and download our games to what we want without ANY possible fear of losing everything like back in the Wii days.
@Damo it seems like there was a mistake when it was translated. The new account system is called "MyNintendo".
https://twitter.com/nineverything/status/659554978982453248
... but will it have an rewards system? That's really all I care about.
PLEASE don't link the account to a region, 'cause in Brazil we don't have our own (wii u) eShop so I need to use an american account on Wii U and a Brazilian one on the 3ds.
@LoveSugoi It will.
They totally should have called it Nintendo Cloud and used a Lakitu in the logo. Missed opportunity....
Apparently the rewards program is called My Nintendo, which is what it was called in America before we got Club Nintendo.
http://web.archive.org/web/20050204012227/http://www.nintendo.com/productregdes
@MikeW "This new guy that's head of everything didn't come up with a good name. He gives me bad vibes!"
Absurd.
I really hope that game saves get stored in this whole cloud service. Maybe then I could ask to change my NNID to something else without losing my save data in my entire 3DS and Wii U library.
@sWiTcHeRoO NENTENDIS SUPOST TU BE ONOVAT :,'(
@Thatguywhoeats Onowhat?
@rjejr Okay, so based on the English version of the slides of the presentation, it seems Nintendo Account is the overarching account system. NNID is now part of it and is one of the ways to sign in to your Nintendo Account. My Nintendo is the rewards program that's part of Nintendo Account. So that clears that confusion up.
According to the slides, My Nintendo will launch in March 2016 alongside MiiTomo. I assume that's when Nintendo Account will also launch.
@ninty4thewin
It was supposed to be out before the end of the calendar year. So yeah, it was delayed.
Dat's da most clever name I ever hoid. I'd-a never thought o' dat!
Sounds good to me. Lol at all the folks that apparently need some silly WiiU pun in their Nintendo brandings now. Sounds like the kind of account we always wanted and further hints at what the NX may be able to do.
Nintendo should've called it Super Wiicount 64! /s
My life is complete now.
@IceClimbers yeah that was in another article on here
How original...
Boring name.
@Xenocity I was thinking the same thing, but in all honesty, it seems that Sony copies nintendo for some things (Move being a big one) and nintendo copies Sony for some things. I love both of the companies, and I think it's a good thing that they both look at each other in this type of thing, because if one company does go under...the other could pick them up. Imagine if in the future Sony and Nintendo became together again!!! They would have an incredibly powerful game system!!!!
sounds fine to me
@Minotaurgamer Honestly I hope so too but I think that both of those services are too advanced for Nintendo.
@Einherjar The only way that would make sense is if the 3DS bonus content is in the Wii U version.
@Xenocity it's called my nintendo, not nintendo account.
I think even when they put the account system into place they'll still have to refine it several times before they get it right. I want cross-buy!
Huzzah! I knew they were working on cloud based storage with a unified account system. Why else would they have taken down Club Nintendo. Great news on all fronts with Nintendo today.
So you replace Club Nintendo with Nintendo Account? Sorry, but that name sucks, change it back to Club Nintendo, or call it Club Nintendo + or something.
@Grumblevolcano They already announced that the additional content will come to the WiiU version. Even the first trailer hinted at a connection between both versions.
Looking good!! But the name.... They really should change the person in charge of branding....
I'm really hoping that our purchased software will finally be tied to a 'Nintendo Account' and not the hardware.
I'm surprised to see people complaining about the name. It's simple and it avoids confusion. A membership service doesn't need a clever name, it just needs to be clear.
Are people really complaining about the the name? You just want the actual service to work well. The name should be clear and concisely demonstrate what it does...I think Nintendo succeeded on both points.
I just commented in another topic about how I wish this was an option lol
@Einherjar Only the characters are confirmed to be transferable. I was considering other things like the Wind Waker content and weapons (don't forget that the Spinner is currently amiibo exclusive).
@IceClimbers "According to the slides, My Nintendo will launch in March 2016 alongside MiiTomo"
You know what the scary part is - when I run "Fall 2015" through my "Nintendo Calendar Translator" (had that one made up during the twice delayed release of SSBB) it comes out "March 2016". So now I don't know whether to consider these as late or on time?
When I put "Zelda U 2015" in the NCT after E3 2014 it just said - "Error, do you mean Zelda NX?" in case you were wondering.
Is that a direct Japanese translation? LOL. How much money did the guy get paid to come up with that original name? Maybe the NX should be named Nintendo Game System. NGS is still better than Wii U though.
@rjejr
That brings to mind the atrociously delayed European release of Brawl. Just asking, where do you live again? Yankee or European?
@AlexSora89 New York. And wasn't Brawl delayed everywhere twice - Nov - Feb-March or did you guys get it even worse than that? For a guy who spends a lot of time on a UK website I don't really follow what happens there much. Well except the amiibo truck being stolen, that was frikkin hilarious.
