Re: Nintendo Direct April 2025: Time, Where To Watch, What To Expect On Switch 2

OMG, the addition of the Countdown Clock has made it that much more real. While I'm obviously very interested in Switch 2, I'm good with my current Switch lineup, so this past week or so I hadn't noticed too much hype building up inside me about April 2nd. But now that the Countdown is officially on...

Re: Hollow Knight: Silksong Gets Surprise Mention By Xbox, Will It Finally Release This Year?

It's remarkable how long it's been, given that the reveal trailer showed so much - you wouldn't think that the game was going to take so long to finish after watching that. I hope there's some decent behind-the-scenes documentary to come about why it's taken so long. They must have had some internal disagreements or major personal obstacles to overcome. Unless... unless they've just been on the razz this entire time, rinsing the Hollow Knight income?

I have to hold up my hands and apologise, I was not expecting this. Admittedly, I haven't had the time to put much, if any, thought into how this would review, but I feel bad for letting you all down by not having my world-famous 10/10 gif ready for this day.

It's the type of open world I just can't help exploring, so I am prepared to let this one-sided review push me off the fence into getting this sooner rather later to play on Switch.

The Wii U version is great, but I've never finished it or really got into the mining stuff on the map, so if that aspect has been made clearer too then I've really got no excuse - it's the perfect type of game for hybrid gaming.

Enjoy everyone 😃

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (15th March)

Got myself the XCX theme in Tetris 99 earlier today, then went on the eshop and browsed games with demos - gonna try me some Rusty Rabbit, Dog Man and Conquistadorio. Thought Atelier Yumia was meant to have a demo too but couldn't find anything [Edit: just scanned the homepage again - demo due to release on 17th March]. Going to carry on with Ori and the Blind Forest too.

Peace, love and pixels to all.

Edit 2: Ok, small update on Rusty Rabbit. Seems playable enough (barely started though), and they've got this guy doing a decent-sounding voiceover, but he talks so damn slowly that I'm compelled to skip it all. Tip to all devs: if you're gonna spend money on a voiceover, don't waste it by making the speech intolerably slow.

Edit 3:
Rusty Rabbit was just too slow, not only in narration but also just the game. Deleted in three minutes.
Dog Man probably lasted even less time, just didn't seem worth my time - overly simplistic platformer that involves having to swap between one of three characters every other second almost. Just annoying.

I'ma try the demo, but look forward to @Princess_Lilly's review.

I will be getting this game, but I want to hear from Nintendo about how the Switch 2 will handle Switch games. I'd rather buy this on Switch and it just get a modest boost of some sort on Switch 2, than wait and buy a Switch 2 version that will probably be more expensive. I'm prioritising my cherished Switch collection over ultimate performance here.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Xenoblade Game? Rate Your Favourite For Our Upcoming Ranking

My first taste was the Wii version of XC. Tended to ignore most of the side quests and couldn't really be bothered with upgrading gear, gems etc. This resulted in me finding each miniboss fight an unpleasant difficulty spike that frustrated my progress and forced me to grind. Never finished it.

Then got XC:DE on Switch, which seemed to streamline the side quest tracking and, armed with the experience of my struggles first time round, I was much more thorough about completing virtually all side quests and upgrading as I went along. Beat the game this time, really loving certain parts of it (e.g. discovering a huge part of Makna Forest I'd unknowingly skipped right by on the Wii). Developed a real bond with the game, but still found the later game a slog, going from difficulty spike to difficulty spike on the bosses, which will always put me off playing again (not saying I won't, but...). And that Affinity mechanic? Just no.

I've made a fresh start on Ori and the Blind Forest this week, having started it many years ago on Steam. Still a beautiful game and gets me wondering why not a lot has come along since to rival it. I guess the genre just doesn't do big enough numbers to justify the effort, which is sad.

Also working on picking up tickets in Tetris 99, and have a hankering to play some Bowser's Fury, which I'm yet to spend much time with.

Peace, love and pixels to all.

Re: Feature: These Past 8 Years Have Been A Privilege

My only regret is not having more time to spend on my Switch. A blessed 8 years with my best ever purchase. And so glad that Switch was there for Shiryu when he needed it.

Me talking to my Switch whenever anyone suggests its time is up:

Re: Final Minecraft Movie Trailer Still Hasn't Convinced Us On The Big-Screen Adaptation

gcunit

@TomSupreme There was no need for a Super Mario Bros movie, but that turned out fairly well for producers, and viewers. Something about the 300+ million copies of Minecraft tells me there's a fanbase worth experimenting with.

@HotGoomba Don't worry, I'm with you. It seems most readers here are expecting Welles, Scorsese or Nolan levels of a filmmaking here. To me it looks like it could be a fun movie.

Re: Pokémon Legends: Z-A Trailer Confirms Starters And Mega Evolutions, Coming Late 2025

I don't find modern urban environments particularly interesting to explore, especially with this kind of art style, unless you can interact/free-roam inside the buildings more than them just being resource shops and base locations. I need to be able to run through the library, the supermarket, the bank, the museum, catching Pokémon as I go. I'm not expecting this game to enable that, so I'm less hyped than for the setting we got for Arceus.

And the whole parkour thing? One minute TPC is hoping to teach kids to brush their teeth, the next they're inspiring rooftop running and jumping. While I get the idea adds an element of fun and excitement, but I think I prefer Pokémon when it takes the more wholesome approach.

Re: Nintendo Highlights Four Brand New Games "Coming Soon" To Switch

gcunit

That Carmen Sandiego trailer did a great job of putting me right off the game. Look at the clip at 45 seconds, it shows Carmen at what I assume is the start of a scene. She slowly gets into a running animation, then stops after about two steps because she's hit the next cutscene trigger (presumably). I absolutely despise when games handover control and immediately take it away again - tells me (rightly or wrongly) that the devs don't understand what good gameplay is, especially if it's making it into the trailer.

I'll be getting the Suikoden release though. On the fence about Xenoblade Chronicles X cos I'm part way through a Wii U run, plus there's a host of other games dropping in the next few months, e.g. Atelier Yumia, Rune Factory, Lunar, Fantasy Life i.

Re: 'Fantasy Life i' Commericals Showcase Comfortingly Familiar Gameplay

gcunit

While I generally prefer shorter trailers over the 5 minute plus type, these seem a bit of an unexpected snippet in that they don't really make the game stand out - the whole harvesting, mining, crafting, fighting loop is, well, nothing new, so I'd have thought they'd be trying to push some unique selling points a bit more. My hopes for the game are not dented, but out of interest in the game's success, I hope it's marketing doesn't miss any tricks.

Re: Review: Blade Chimera (Switch) - A Ridiculously Fun, Combat-First Metroidvania

gcunit

Inspired to revisit these comments to reflect my experience with the game.

I was thinking I would score this 70-75 out of 100. The soundtrack and sound design is nothing special, the environment is mostly samey, the enemies, while visually interesting, generally move stiffly and don't offer much fun. The game just felt 'fine' rather than anything special. And it felt like this reviewer was doing someone a favour.

As I got deeper into the game and had unlocked the movement power-ups and weapons, I was starting to think I could be leaning to maybe scoring it as much as an 80 - it had gotten a bit more satisfying to play.

But then, I reached a point where the game nerfed all the enjoyable movement power-ups (e.g. dash and double-jump gone) and made me traipse across half the map slowly and tediously. I was 75% of the way to the destination when I reached a door that needed smashing, but instead of smashing it, my character froze and the game crashed. So not only does the developer think forcing tedious navigation on the player is fun, they can't be arsed to at least make sure it all goes smoothly, and I'll have to repeat the tedious trek if I want to finish the game.

6/10. At best.

Re: Opinion: Miiverse Was Fine, But Does Anybody Really Want It Back In 2025?

gcunit

Now that twitter is well and truly flushed down the toilet, now would be a great time for Miiverse to return. I don't even think moderation is that necessary - just make it a 12+ or 16+ environment and give us an Ignore option that doesn't tell the ignored person and doesn't let others re-post it. A ringfenced place to quickly upload screenshots, fanart and comments... a happy place. Please.
