I have neither the time nor the appetite for these extended 'trailers', and fear spoiling the treat of discovery by watching anything over 90 seconds long.
@Lightsiyd Emulation handhelds are devices that emulate older gaming hardware and are handheld in form (as opposed to being statically positioned e.g. on a desk, cabinet or floor).
I started the Switch era pretty cautiously. Didn't buy a lot of games Year 1.
Seven years later... I suspect this little Switch is going to drag me, broken and penniless, across the 750 physical games line.
Don't quite know yet how many of the games that featured in yesterday's presentations I'll be picking up, but you can be sure that Rune Factory, Atelier, Legend of Heroes, Tetris Forever, Suikoden, Tales of the Shire and the Capcom collections will be among them.
I used the word tedious myself about this game. I like it, but there is definite tedium.
Ultimately it comes down to this. In 1-5 years time, if I haven't bought this game, would I want it in my Nintendo collection? Yes, I think so. And if I don't buy it now, how much cheaper will I be able to buy it for in 1-5 years time? Probably wouldn't get cheaper than £20. So £32.55 now, although steep for what I think this comprises, is a 'Ahh, I may as well' kind of proposition.
Does my head in that publishers are prepared to back games like this physically, but others won't for games with much more recognition and backing (Yakuza).
Looking forward to picking up this two-pack. Only heard about these two games in the last 24 hours, but they seem worth checking out.
I've played a bit more of the demo now and am erring on letting my Amazon pre-order get delivered to a collection point, then I'll see what the reviews are like and how I get on with the rest of the demo before deciding whether to collect my order or not.
My main reservation is just the mechanics from scene to scene. It seems every scene quickly descends into spamming the Ask/Think/Call/Examine/Observations options until I've triggered the progress switch in a not especially intuitive manner. There's just been countless examples of it. A particularly maddening one was where Protag was stood at the bus stop, nothing to do, no-one to talk to, nothing of significance to examine. I somehow triggered the option to call a taxi, but then accidentally chose the 'No don't, save phone battery' option (or something like that) and then had a frustrating time going through the menus again trying to re-trigger the taxi option.
I feel like if I played through the demo again, it would be just as frustrating because my progression has felt so random, so I'd just be cycling through all the available options again until I chanced upon the right one.
And this frustration really is exacerbated by talking to the NPCs. You ask them about a topic, they give an answer, but then you have to ask them about the same topic again to check to see whether they've got any more to say about it. I'm kind of getting used to it, but it feels inefficient and tedious at times. In some ways, you could say it adds realism, because investigations do require persistence, perseverance, asking the same question multiple times, but I'm not sure how well that approach translates to a game. I think adding a prompt to push NPCs to say more, rather than making me go back through the menu, might help.
Which is all a bit unfortunate. I feel invested enough in the story, and wanting to give the physical release support. It just feels like the game could make things easier for itself to succeed by having the NPCs spill all they've got to say in one go, rather than making us feel like we're squeezing blood from a stone.
Not the trilogy I was hoping for (Mass Effect), but a welcome surprise.
Added the first two to my Steam library a long time ago. Played a fair amount of the first but as a first timer I seem to remember it feeling a bit of a slog, with all manner of things competing to kill me next. Still, put the trilogy on a cartridge and my purchase is in the bag.
Love that fairy pin; dislike MNS. £30 for the adult t-shirts is off-putting, particularly when factoring in MNS' propensity for not including all items ordered in my parcel but charging me anyway.
@Kestrel Indeed. It's pretty rare that I react to reveals in Directs much, but this proper had my eyes popping and a big "Whaaaahhht?!" leaving my lips.
Just wish they'd committed to announcing the full trilogy and Cold Steel I & II too so I could have them all on Switch.
My worry is that this being a remake might mean it's a long time before the others make it, if ever.
I'm on the demo of Emio: The Smiling Man today. I want to like it, but early impressions are that I may well cancel my pre-order. I like the presentation, and the writing seems fine so far, but the mechanics seem a little lacking for the asking price. Maybe the story will suck me in though. Stay tuned.
Also downloaded some NSO game trials - Tetris Effect and Power Wash Simulator - so I'll probably be giving them a spin.
Other than that, bound to be some Animal Crossing: New Horizons and perhaps some Tears of the Kingdom to keep that plate spinning.
Spent yesterday evening on the long overdue task of updating my Switch physical collection list. That had the inevitable consequence of getting me thinking about what other purchases to make. Could be a costly weekend...
@Ooyah I'll be straight wit'you: hald of me is angry, but the other hald is just disappointed. I really thought you hald a bit more about you than that.
I don't know what a 'hald' is, and I skipped Game of Thrones anyway, but it's looking good. Bought the first one recently but haven't played yet. I think we all know a 1 & 2 Doublepack physical release is the next logical announcement. The end of the trailer includes both the eshop logo and the Switch logo, so what else should I conclude?
This seems like a decent development for someone like me who was just getting into the series when Pokémon TV was pulled from the Switch. I would like to know how I will access the show from now on. YouTube? Amazon Prime Video? Something else? And when?
I think they've got me. The clothing shop and the Dodo Airlines sets are just too... aaaarrrrrgggghhhhh, my ****ing wallet, when will it be left in peace?
F*** Amazon and its roulette wheel pricing system. Been meaning to pre-order at the £32 it was listed for for a week or two, but now it's jumped back to £40+, so looks like I'll be going elsewhere.
On my hols this week. That means Mega Man 11 will reprise its role as my summer holiday game. Plus I double dipped on Huntdown this week to add it to my digital library for peanuts, so that will likely get a run.
But currently, I'm back in Hyrule, huntin' 'oblins.
I think I might prefer to just pay £20 for Tangy, Wilbur and the plane, but as I don't have a choice, there'll be some serious soul searching going on inside the mind of gcunit to decide whether the lure of those two sat in the plane is going to be enough to start sucking me into the dangerous World of Nintendo X LEGO.
Fwiw, Tangy is my current favourite platonic relationship islander.
Likely to jump on the World Of Goo train and play some of the first one. Pirated it on Wii back in t'day, then bought it on Switch, but hold my hands up to being a bit pants at it and never having got my head round how to go about structuring my goo when things get tight.
Beyond that, who knows. Been putting a bit of (long overdue) time into indexing my Switch games collection, so it would be good to carry that on, and that's bound to get me ripping the seals off one or two neglected games.
But there's some stone-cold classics I've started but not finished that are increasingly itching my mind. Tears Of The Kingdom, Hollow Knight, or Pokémon Violet (yes, it is a classic in my eyes), could this be your time to return to the hot seat?
I wish you all the gamiest of gaming weekends my friends 😚
Oh... and probably some more Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which I've been getting back to this week, with the wonderful Daisy, obvs. Can I redo my vote?
@TheSaneInsanity I'm looking forward to Emio, but my hype is restricted due to the lack of physical availability of the other games in the series. It really grinds my gears that they could release this one physically but not the other two, which I've not played because I won't pay much for digital purchases. That's always going to relegate it to a secondary consideration for me in comparison to some of the other games. I have all of the Metroid Prime games physically, and most of the Pokémon and Zelda games, so a new game in those series is likely to be more appealing to me.
All these people insisting Nintendo doesn't care about sales records are basically saying that Nintendo doesn't care about image and prestige, which I don't think is the case.
Anywho, you can add at least one more sale to the pile cos I've got a Zelda Lite incoming. And if they happen to release a Metroid Prime edition for MP4, and/or a Pokemon Legends 2 edition, then all bets are off (as will be my retirement).
@Solomon_Rambling Thank you for your interest and enquiry.
I figure if it gets a rough review here it is likely to struggle generally. This increases the chances of it getting cheap on the eshop. This alone is often my undoing, but the fact this has decent visuals, nice music, and some cool upgrades... it's got 'guilty and ultimately-regrettable minor indulgence' written all over it.
Plus, I often skip reviews and just peep the conclusion (not because I'm an ungrateful punk, just that I prefer to minimise my exposure and preconceptions about games/books/films until
I've tried them myself), so the full tragedy of my potential future purchase is yet to occur to me.
In terms of just the cartridge itself, I'm tempted to go for 3DS.
If we were including the process of inserting/removing the cartridge from the device, I'd probably say N64. The 3DS experience has always felt a bit like something's getting damaged inside the slot.

I'll take this.

Re: Upcoming Emulation Handheld Rocks A Stunning Optional GameCube Theme
Stick a GameCube theme on a bottle opener and this site'll report on it 😄
I am only joshing btw, any GameCube recognition is welcome in gcunit's world.
I've not bought into any emulation hardware yet, but haven't ruled it out.

Re: Review: Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club (Switch) - A Stylish Mystery With One Foot In The Past
Huh. Was not expecting this many references to Star Fox in these comments.
@HeeHo This game is unconnected, narratively, to the Famicom games.
Re: Castlevania Dominus Collection Physical Release Confirmed, Pre-Orders Open Next Month
Hmmm. I have nice physical copies of all three of these on DS. Anyone know of any extras that make double-dipping irresistible?
