Re: Professor Layton Dev Level-5 Has No Plans For Future Games Outside Of Japan, Says Report

cyrus_zuo

@Friendly Neither of those games were published in the US by Level 5, this wouldn't affect games like Ni No Kuni and Professor Layton.

Honestly, this is really non-news, or potentially good news as I'd much rather see Level 5 continue doing Professor Layton instead of trying to do a spin-off (Katrielle) - which was done specifically so they could release their own games in the US w/o a publisher (NOA owns the Professor Layton publishing rights in the US).
Snack World and Fantasy Life (NOA owns US publishing) are in the same boat.

So, potential good news is that we could see a proper Professor Layton game b/c of this news.

Re: Review: Rebel Galaxy Outlaw - Deliciously Daring Dogfighting In The Depths Of Space

cyrus_zuo

Thanks for the review, it helped me know the game isn't for me!

"she also curses constantly which begins to really grate after a while"

I'm sure some dig that, but I don't.
I try to create the world I want to live in, and 'constant cursing' isn't a part of that world, so I'll skip it.
(there are plenty of other games out there, so no issues for me, and for those who want 'constant cursing' as a part of their world the review's call-out will be beneficial as well! Everyone wins!)

Thanks for the detailed review!

Re: Review: NBA 2K21 - Ignore The Microtransactions And You've Got The Best Basketball Game On Switch

cyrus_zuo

I'm glad EA doesn't make this game.
If they did it would remove the extra modes and the microtransactions.
Everyone here would be mad, but for a different reason.

For me, I LOVE the 2K series.
The gameplay is easily the best basketball out there, ever.
Even if it falls short of real basketball (often and stupidly). It's just an impossible bar.

For me I don't play MyPlayer or MyTeam.
I play franchise - it is an amazing mode of incredible depth.
I have put dozens of hours into it in each of the 2K games I've bought.

Is it an 8?
Well for me it is a 9 or 10 - rarely do I play games as much as this game. I have TONS of sport games, most of them break down pretty quickly. They don't scale with your abilities, they end up being shallow and easily broken by mechanics that aren't well thought out for LONG TERM play.

NBA2K is the antithesis.
There is tons of long-term play, you can almost always get better, and then go online for more play.

If you want the RPG mode or the myteam mode, you may have a different experience.
That said, I wonder if they should sell them as 3 different games?
Each one I think is worth the price of entry for the right player.

For me, I agree with the review, but would score it higher.
If you like NBA - this is an awesome game, literally the best, hands down, and not just the best NBA game, it's one of the best 2 sport games around (the show is the only one that is better).

Re: Random: Modder Pokes Fun At Nintendo By Creating Custom Joy-Con Fighter That Always Drifts Left

cyrus_zuo

Drifting in the joy-cons is a JOKE.

I've bought every Nintendo console and still have most of them. I play with the WiiMotes nearly weekly - I've NEVER had a problem w/Nintendo hardware!

...until now...

I have bought 5 sets of joy-cons.
They all drift.

You can make them drift less by sitting VERY CLOSE to the system.

It's clearly a design problem, and honestly Nintendo should be ashamed and sending out replacements like candy.

Mostly I just play w/my pro controller b/c the joy-cons are a joyke.

Re: Mini Review: Boomerang Fu - Light-Hearted Chaos That's Great With Friends

cyrus_zuo

Did NL review Baron: Fur Is Gonna Fly?

That is one awesome multiplayer game (for up to 8). It's silly songs and brilliant painting mode make it a common choice for my crew.

I'll pick up Boomerang Fu at some point too, just b/c it plays 6! I prefer 8 player games, but they are few and far in-between, so 6-player games always get a look too.

Re: Reminder: The Second DLC Pack For Cadence Of Hyrule Is Now Available

cyrus_zuo

Loving this game, it was one of my favorites of last year, and I didn't even get to dungeon mode until this year.

Dungeon Mode is like Zelda in the Crypt world (instead of Crypt in the Zelda world). There's seriously 2 games in this game, and that was before they added the Octavio's Ode (which is like another story mode).

I'm a big fan of this game, picked up the season pass and have played a ton...and will for sure play a ton more - WELL worth the money.

Re: Switch Is Getting An All-New Wonder Boy Game In 2021

cyrus_zuo

Cautiously optimistic.

Monster Boy I thought was very uneven. Extreme difficulty spikes made me finally give up on it near the end.
Wonder Boy: Dragon's Trap, is worth getting, though notably it feels old. If you didn't play it back in the day you'll find lots of the game design to be obtuse.

Re: Feature: All The Paper Mario Games, Ranked By You

cyrus_zuo

I think Origami King is getting under-appreciated here, for whatever it is worth.

I'm curious what % of people who rated it have played it.

...and Sticker Star was horrible. I tried SO hard to like that game. After playing it I'd decided no more Paper Mario for me. I only got the Switch game b/c I needed to use my voucher and had everything else. That was a lucky stroke b/c it is a good game, not a great game, but maybe the best Nintendo release in 2020?

Re: Mario Kart Tour's Pirate Tour Adds King Bob-Omb And Pirate Bowser Jr.

cyrus_zuo

Disappointed...

...by the fact that MK8 has been sitting unplayed on my Switch b/c I'd already played the heck out of it on the WiiU.

We've never gone longer in-between updates to the MK series, which is my favorite (and no, the frustrating to control phone game doesn't count).

MK8 could use some love and DLC...right about 3 years ago!

Re: Japanese Charts: Animal Crossing Loses Top Spot To eBaseball Powerful Pro 2020

cyrus_zuo

@DockEllisD That is where my head went too, usually the PS version outsells the Nintendo platform version, and by a lot. This is a meaningful moment in understanding the types of users who have bought a Switch in Japan. It suggests that it is gaining the broader market quite well - which is a great thing for Switch owners b/c it means more games will consider and come to the platform.

Re: Review: Urban Flow - An Accessible And Absorbing Traffic Toy Box

cyrus_zuo

I've had a long-time desire to make a traffic game that used actual street-light data to optimize all the awful traffic lights... (have players optimize, then send back the optimizations to the cities and have them implement sane approaches to traffic lights)

I think I'll give up on that plan now, and maybe check out the game, great review!

Re: Review: Burnout Paradise Remastered - Thrilling Open-World Racing Tempered By Blurry Visuals And A High Price

cyrus_zuo

This made me crazy sick - something Most Wanted U on the WiiU didn't do. That game was sharper. I won't get this on Switch having played it as I can't play it w/o getting motion sick (ick!).

Other things worth noting (from someone who played Most Wanted U First):

  • Changing cars in this game is SLOW, Hard and Painful
  • Finding races is a PAIN (the autolog ability to start a race on the fly in Most Wanted U is wonderful...driving around randomly in Burnout is comparatively a pain)

I played for ~35 minutes, only got into 3 races, felt everything looked poorly detailed next to Most Wanted U, changed to the Back to the Future car, hovered, and got REALLY motion sick (something that didn't happen for me in Most Wanted U) - I think the difference here is the generally blurry details and the tunnels.

I was disappointed, I would have gotten it if I didn't get so sick, or I would have AT LEAST gone online as that is clearly the focus of the game based on the menus and UI.

Re: Nintendo Expands The Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Four More Titles

cyrus_zuo

RYGAR!
RYGAR!
RYGAR!
RYGAR!

I'm so stoked for that!

I loved that game and have been waiting GENERATIONS for it to appear on a Virtual Console.
I couldn't understand why it didn't go to Wii, 3DS, WiiU...
Yet they all got Mighty Bomb Jack and Solomon's Key (by the same developer) and then Ninja Gaiden, completely skipping Rygar!

Switch got both the arcade and NES version of Solomon's Key even.

Rygar is a lot of fun, it's very different than the linear Arcade version. It is similar to Zelda in exploration/puzzle solving (Zelda back in the day).

My wallet has been ready for Rygar for a LONG time...and now it is free!

Re: Super Mega Baseball 3 Has A Free Post-Launch Mode Coming 'Early Summer'

cyrus_zuo

This will be a day 1 for me, and I'm very excited for it.

If you haven't played it, and you like baseball, you are missing out.
It's that pure and simple.
The new game will have a demo next week with unlimited online play, so, if you like baseball, do yourself a favor and play it (if you're not playing it already).

SMB2 had a huge fanbase, and after playing it, I get why.

I'll happily pick up The Show if it comes to Switch next year.
That said, SMB3 is a must-buy for me next week - it's the game I've been most excited for this year (so far!)

Re: Talking Point: Should Nintendo Create An Apple Arcade-Style Service For Smartphones?

cyrus_zuo

Only if they are stupid.

Abandoning making hardware is a favorite battle cry of stock market experts...who are obviously clueless.

Let's see what happened to previously console makers who became just game makers?

  • 3DO - Out of business
  • Hudson - Out of business
  • Atari - Makes unknown garbage
  • Sega - Makes Sonic, everything else has disappeared

Going to other platforms has been a terrible approach in the past.
Putting stuff on a platform that doesn't play to your strengths (mobile is TERRIBLE for platformers or anything that requires precise controls) is a way to devalue your content and destroy your value.

DUMB idea - by people who don't consider history when talking about the future.

Re: It's Been Three Years Since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Was Released On Nintendo Switch

cyrus_zuo

6 years since a new Mario Kart game.

6 YEARS!
...and no new game in sight.
Will we reach 10?

Instead of it being Nintendo's #1 Franchise (check the numbers) you'd think it was a terrible afterthought.

Who releases updates to franchises once every 6+ years? or 10?

(please don't mention the mobile one - touch-screen and tilt mobile racing controls are so inferior they might as well be Zelda on the Philips CDI)

Re: Nintendo Remembers ARMS Exists, Announces Official Online Tournament

cyrus_zuo

LOVED ARMS...

...and once they stopped doing the online events, I stopped playing. It's too hard to find someone online other than during events.
I think a 50% price cut is in order b/c there is simply less to experience now than there was when it came out.

Fun game though, it really hit the spot for me. I preferred it to Smash, but I think just b/c it was something new and I've played so much Smash over the last 10+ years that "more smash" wasn't as compelling to me (that said I have 50+ hours in Smash on Switch...I just have more in ARMS).

The key to ARMS is...
...watch the shoulders, not the hands!
