Earlier today, we shared an updated list of the top ten best-selling Nintendo Switch games of all time, but how are the likes of the Wii U and 3DS doing, and even the Wii and DS before those?
Well, it just so happens that Nintendo has also provided up-to-date figures for its best-selling games on those platforms. As you can imagine, sales for the majority of the games listed below are pretty static these days, but some continue to sell thanks to digital stores remaining open – or perhaps a game store found a few old boxes hidden at the back of its warehouse?
As always, Mario Kart steals the show across the board, but there are plenty of fantastic games in these lists.

Make Virtual Console DS games for the 3DS eShop, please Nintendo!!
It’s interesting that not a single 3DS game could touch Nintendogs, DS was beast not a single title on its list dips below 10 million unlike the others.
@Kilamanjaro they let me download an old ds game as a club nintendo bonus once. I think it was a wario game?
My point is, it’s very doable.
It will be very long list if i type All Nintendo games i have. 😅
According from my purchase book, i have :
41 Switch games
50 3DS games (39 USA, 7 Japan, 4 Europe)
37 NDS games ( 22 USA, 13 Japan, 1 Europe, 1 Australia)
29 Wii games (27 USA, 2 Japan)
8 Wii U games (All USA)
3 Gamecube games (All USA)
2 GBA games (All Japan)
Total = 170 Nintendo games.
Cool list but expected
@SalvorHardin Yes, although the growth of smartphone gaming in the years after the DS probably means that a dedicated mobile gaming device will never again reach those sort of numbers.
Mario Kart Wii and DS: I am inevitable
Wii Sports, Nintendogs, New Super Mario Bros: No lol
From Wikipedia for Switch:
No. Title Copies sold
1 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 28.99 million[2][3]
2 Animal Crossing: New Horizons 26.04 million[3]
3 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 21.10 million[3]
4 The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 19.74 million[3]
5 Pokémon Sword and Shield 19.02 million[3]

Summary: Nintendo fans will be buying the same franchises on every console until the end of time. Year 2099, Top Nintendo Software, 1. Mario Kart 32... etc etc
I own 8 of the best selling games on all of those systems except the Wii... where I have all 10 lol!
Tomodachi Life cracks the all time top 10 for 3DS and yet we are still waiting for a sequel on any platform.
I really loved that silly game.
The relatively low sales of the Wind Waker remake are mind blowing - thank goodness we got Link’s Awakening in spite of that
@ZeldaFanboy78 actually they had Wii Bundles that didn’t have it - my mother-in-law bought her Wii in a black and red Mario bundle and they had to buy Wii Sports standalone
@thiswaynow i’m out here still playing Mario 3 and Super Mario 64 on my Switch so can’t argue
Love to know what Breath of the Wild did on Wii U, I hope it hit a million anyway. I have the Wii U version.
@JHDK I read on the internet that a beefed up Switch version is earmarked for February.
Hope it's true, love that game.
Wii U - such a dud. A boring dud. I still have mine hooked up and have lots of downloads.. Looking through my collection I only have a handful of actual games exclusive to the system (most of the Wii U library is Wii games in fact).... It was so not worth buying for me, I never really enjoyed it at all.
I have pretty different tastes than the masses, I guess, especially with the 3DS and DS. I own 6 and 7 of the WiiU and Wii titles, abut only 2 3DS and 1 DS game on those lists, also based on the Switch list above, I only have 2 of the top 10. It's not like I don't have dozens of games (or more) for these systems, either.
@ZeldaFanboy78 I suspect Nintendo Land's sales on Wii U are partly due to its semi-bundled state (I mean, it didn't get packed in with the arguably almost useless "basic" model).
@Kilamanjaro Interesting as Advance Wars: Days of Ruin ONLY ever got released in Japan exactly that way (though as some kind of promotional-only release on top of that). Supposedly the US/EU release still had all the Japanese text programming still in the code, just disabled. And they didn't release it originally.
@GannonBanned In America the only standalone, fully packaged retail release of Wii Sports was the Nintendo Selects release in like 2011 or so. (though it was possible to buy a disc from Nintendo's website before that. Though I would assume still in the pack-in or a generic cardboard sleeve.)
I recall after Wii Sports Resort came out, Nintendo replaced Wii Sports with a combo disc. I wonder if that technically is counted as a different game.
The DS Lite is such a incredible great System.
Really nice and small Design, supports Advance Games and has such a great Libary.
The next i'll play is Final Fantasy IV on it.
@KingMike nah man I STG they picked up a white cased Wii Sports with a gold “Nintendo Selects” border at our local Wal Mart - you can find used North American copies on eBay, Amazon, and GameStop - it was $19.99 IIRC
EDIT: just realized I misread your comment and am agreeing with you - my bad, I’m pretty dumb
@msvt the U is the ONLY Nintendo console system I didn’t get in my life - looked terrible out the gate when I saw the ad where the person is playing MANCALA on the tablet - nothing like spending $300 to play a 1500 year old game that was intended to be played on the ground with rocks.
People were so shocked by ACNH success on Switch need to look at ACNL on 3DS. It's not like Animal Crossing was an obscure niche game that hardly anyone played. It sold 12 million on 3DS.
@ZeldaFanboy78 I've had a Wii for 8 years and never owned Wii Sports (didn't come with the bundle I purchased). Wii Sports Resort was one of the first games I got for it though.
@geordie That would be awesome!
@JHDK don't know how accurate or trustworthy this is??
https://fantendo.fandom.com/wiki/Tomodachi_Life_Switch
@geordie Don't care. Like Mulder, I want to believe.
The Wii U sales numbers are incredible when you consider only 13.56 million consoles were sold. Doing the math, one finds that over 62% of all Wii U owners purchased Mario Kart 8.
All the ones at the top are that high because they were packed in with a lot of systems
@LEGOSuperDKong For a system that sold so poorly it actually ended up having one of the better attach rates of a Nintendo system.
Funny enough - Zelda: Wind Waker is the only Zelda on any of those lists!
@AmplifyMJ it hit 2 million I think so basically its 1 million behind Windwaker
@thiswaynow Nah, Nintendo decides to get inspiration from Rockstar and the best selling Nintendo software in 2099 is a port of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the latest Nintendo system
@The_Flume thank you
I do not own 4 of these, Tomodachi, Wii U Party, Animal Crossing and More Brain Training!
take a shot everytime u see mario kart here lmao
I own
8/10 for Switch
9/10 for Wii U
7/10 for 3DS
7/10 for Wii
6/10 for DS
Most of the time it's the Pokémon games that let me down. I only have Let's Go Pikachu and Moon from these lists.
@cyrus_zuo Except for Breath of the Wild.
@ZeldaFanboy78 - Given that Wii Sport's sales are out of synch with the Wii console sales, I'd guess some Wii's (quite a few in fact, going by the large gap between the two) weren't sold with Wii Sports bundled in.
The usual suspects then. What is interesting is that I had ALL those games on those lists at some point in time bar NSLU as I got that as a download alongside my NSMBU game.
@HeavyArms55
New Leaf was such an amazing game. I know It's had around 7-8 years of spotlight now, but I'm still not really able to let it go for New Horizons. I love my town, villagers, and everything I've done with it and all that it does in general too much to just dump it for a deserted island like many people have at this point.
But despite that, New Horizons is still a great game that deserves it's sales. Plus, it's not very surprising considering how viral the game is. Most people have seen refrences to it at least in one place at this point. Though mark my words, it'll never beat MKDeluxe XD
@GannonBanned
In fact it took me until recently to get around to buying Switch. I originally intended to skip last gen (wii u era) and enjoy previous gens of games and backlog and just to have TIME to properly play the 3DS massive 'want-list'. Lately I just keep thinking about how disappointing and lame the Wii U was from reveal to a well-deserved death.
Finally with Switch we all seem to have enough for choices, function, 'like-factor' and of course FUN to make our individual type of uses and interests for gaming.
@Kilamanjaro mod your 3ds. Super easy to do
Tomodachi Life deserves a sequel.
@msvt yeah I was gonna skip out the switch too then a coworker put breath of the wild in my HANDS at work and I was like holy cow this thing works the hype is real!!
Now I have 35 games, 6 joycons and a pro controller and I’m like “I almost missed all of this” 😭
@Heavyarms55 I don’t know of anyone who bought the system JUST for the game tho
@Sakiya I don't know dude, it's gotten close very quickly. We will see after this holiday season.
@GannonBanned I don't see that as making much of a difference really. If anything its success on 3DS led to greater awareness of the series which contributed directly to the success of NH. Yes NH is doing better but that success is built off past success. I know a good few people who said something like "hey, my friend really liked Animal Crossing on 3DS so I wanna try it now on Switch. "
Wow. I had a pretty big collection of DS games yet somehow managed to not have any of the top ten.
@LinktotheFuture - While it is on a list, it wasn't on any of the lists shown here. It's worth noting that Switch is still getting sales - so it may drop off.
I think BotW is easily the best game ever made and it is hard to play games after playing it b/c they are all so inferior - I love the game - just pointing out that Zelda is an interesting beast when it comes to widespread sales.
@cyrus_zuo You are right, I must have been combining articles in my head. My apologies!
@Heavyarms55
If NH beats MK8D then I'll actually open the game up again. Until then all I can do is watch 👀
@Sakiya Seems like an oddly specific way to decide what games you want to play, but hey, if that's what you wanna do. Have fun.
@Heavyarms55
That was mostly a joke lol. I usually wouldn't do that but if it actually reaches that milestone then I may just play it out of respect.
@Kilamanjaro
That would make no sense. You can just use normal DS games on 3DS.
@Marioman2020 absolutely makes sense. I bought DS games on the Wii U eShop, so why shouldn't I be able to access them on a 3DS? Do you know how inconvenient and expensive it is to hunt down legacy DS games compared to the relative easiness of just downloading from a virtual console shop? It makes absolute sense. They do it for the Wii U which isn't even handheld. Shopping at most used game stores you'll get a ton of shovelware and hardly find the specific games you want.
@Kilamanjaro
Good Point. Never Mind
