Re: Review: R.B.I. Baseball 19 - An Improved Showing, But Still Sadly Lacking In So Many Areas

cyrus_zuo

@BulbasaurusRex good list of games that I know well! MVP is legendary, but I felt the games were too long, though I loved how throwing worked on defense to provide risk and reward.

I love Baseball Stars, but I gotta say this year's RBI is better than Baseball Stars 2 (which I own on Wii along with Power Pros).

Honestly, I think if you're looking for a fun to play baseball game, this year's RBI hits the spot well. The gameplay is solid and a lot of fun.

Re: Review: R.B.I. Baseball 19 - An Improved Showing, But Still Sadly Lacking In So Many Areas

cyrus_zuo

Last year's review was unfair, this year I think the score is off, but otherwise it's a decent review.

I don't have the time to get into the show, but am an avif baseball fan who has bought several dozen baseball games over the years.

Baseball Stars NES and the High Heat series on PC (NOT console) remain my favorites, but honestly, this year's RBI comes in high on the list.

It plays well, is super fun, visually good, and well, I'm honestly loving it. It's everything I wanted Baseball Advance (GBA) to be.

I strongly recommend it, except one issue - I get stutters and frame rate drops each game in the later innings.

There are bugs that are frustrating, like the time a foul ball to the dugout was ruled a hit, which made me lose a game, but mostly I just can't wait to play another game... Except for those stutters... I'm hoping for a patch for those.

If you like baseball, and are not playing the show, I highly recommend RBI! You'll find this year's version is a really fun baseball game to play at home and on the go.

Re: Feature: The Best Online Multiplayer Games On Nintendo Switch

cyrus_zuo

ARMS - is the game I've played online the most - every party crash I pull it back out. It remains the game I feel is least appreciated on the Switch - due to it's brutal early learning curve. I'm glad they are continuing to do Party Crashes - they have plenty of people playing them.

MK8 - I played a good bit online, and can humbly say I'm insanely good at the game, but the cheaters make things frustrating online. Watching someone fire a blue shell at the start line, right as the race begins, before we've even gotten to the power-ups is frustrating and happens more often than it should.

Rocket League - such a disaster online. I really liked it local, played 30 hours with friends and family, then went online and stopped playing the game altogether. I've never seen worse match-making in my life.

Re: Layton's Mystery Journey Coming To Switch In The West Soon

cyrus_zuo

Played through it on the 3ds.

It's not as good as the other games and suffers from having 11 stories instead of a big story. They pull them together at the end, when the game finally hits its stride.

The puzzles are too simple and the mobile phone roots of the title hurt it.
Also, the main characters are nowhere near as interesting as the Professor!

Overall, good to have if you love the series, but by far the weakest Layton game.

Re: R.B.I. Baseball 19 Steps Up To The Plate On Switch Next Month

cyrus_zuo

The Nintendo life review of RBI was one of the most uninformed reviews I've ever read.

As someone who loved the NES Baseball Stars, and played the heck out of the original RBI Baseball, this new game is just what I want, and I've put a lot of hours into it.

It isn't MVP Baseball, MLB the show, or anything that performs like a Sim. It isn't deep in strategy and team management (however it is more Sim than those NES titles mentioned above by miles).

Having played dozens of baseball games over the years, I'd say the RBI of today plays most like RBI baseball of the NES era out of any game I've played.

I think the negativity towards this series is largely unfair (at least it is unfair starting last year, pre last year RBI was pretty crappy!)

For me I'm stoked we get the game in March.
I'll buy it digital on day one because I want it always available on my system.
I'm looking forward to it with gusto!
I bought Super Mega Baseball last year waiting for the much delayed RBI. Super Mega had skill and charm, it's very good, but the mix of arcade and simulation in RBI wrapped up in games you can play in under a half hour is EXACTLY what I'm looking for.

RBI has its issues, but it is A MUCH better game than some say.

At the end of the day, if you want a proper complex Sim, this isn't the game for you. The Show is like NBA 2k, if that is what you want you'll be disappointed with RBI.

If you want an arcade game that captures light Sim features, RBI is a great game.

Re: NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 Update Adds New Playgrounds, Dozens Of Players And Daily Challenges For Free

cyrus_zuo

The first game has kept me from buying the second.
Pressing steal on defense usually leads to no visual change on the screen. It only shows a steal animation if you time it right, otherwise you can spam the steal button and see your player not respond on screen.

NBA jam is fluid on defense, playgrounds is all offense.

Playgrounds looks good, but having played many hours of each, playgrounds is a poor imitation of Jam, and don't get me started on how bad the commentary is in playgrounds. I turn off the sound because it is so bad.

If you like arcade style sport games I recommend checking out Football heroes turbo.
It's not pretty like playgrounds, but it plays amazingly well (she's got it where it counts).

Re: Mario Kart Tour Has Been Delayed Until Summer 2019

cyrus_zuo

There is NO game I play more than Mario Kart.
On EVERY platform for decades.

...and I have ZERO expectation this will be good.
Mario Kart minus the controller is no fun. Tilt is ok, tilting the screen and taking away physical buttons is NOT ok.
Mario Run on mobile proved just why mobile is not worthy of such great IP as Mario, the mobile experience does not measure up at all.

I wish Nintendo would make Advance Wars for Mobile, and/or other games where being forced to use touch controls don't ruin the game.

Re: Review: New Star Manager - Football Management At Its Most Tactile

cyrus_zuo

New Star soccer on PC is easily my favourite Soccer/football game, yes I think it's better than FIFA.

I really wish that was what had come to Switch.
I may get this anyway, but it seems like a missed opportunity bringing the mobile version to Switch instead of the PC version.

Granted this doesn't look as good as FIFA, but game play wise, it offers a row experience that affects got other players respond to you while playing. If you don't hangout with your teammates they won't pass you the ball during matches. If you spend to much time with your girlfriend, your training and then your stats suffer.
It's a remarkable game that also played excellent, if a bit on the arcade-y side.

Re: Video: Why You Should Be Pleased The Development Of Metroid Prime 4 Has Been Restarted

cyrus_zuo

Other M is the only Metroid I played to 100%.
Other M is the only Metroid I've beaten more than one time (3).
Other M had many flaws, but it also had unique gameplay. The switch from isometric to first person was wonderful.
I enjoyed MP3, I'll buy an HD Trilogy, but I'd rather have something new and interesting then yet another, more of the same, over and over, why not yet again, first person sci fi space shooter.

Re: Here Are The Top Ten Best-Selling Nintendo Switch Games Of 2018 In The US

cyrus_zuo

3RD Parties are not represented (miss).

I really enjoyed Civ 6 on Switch, and I bought RBI Baseball on day 1 (and will again next year - though I usually buy digital).

I wish AAA 3rd parties sold better on Switch, I'd hate to lose their support.
I love having so many great Indie games. I'm glad we have their support. Turbo Football is my latest game I'm so glad is on Switch.

Re: Xenon Racer Aims To Scratch That Futuristic F-Zero Itch On Switch This March

cyrus_zuo

I was excited, then realized we were looking at PS4 graphics.

It's amazing that Switch doesn't have a decent racing game outside of Mario Kart.
When I want a good racing game I'm still going back to Need For Speed: Most Wanted U on the WiiU.

I keep hoping, but we're consistently getting ho-hum titles on Switch that require you to squint to see a good game. (Fast RMX is probably the best looking of the bunch, but the level (track) design is just awful.)

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects - December 2018

cyrus_zuo

I picked up Hollow Knight on sale, but didn't even start it as I spent hours and hours in Civilization, which I got on sale.
I also played Smash, Mario Party, Overcooked 2 DLC, and just started into the copy of RiMe I got on the cheap (and am happy I got).

I'm definitely at the place where I have more games to play than time to play then, so, I'm having to pass on other games I want to check out that are on sale right now!

Re: Feature: Game Of The Year 2018 - Staff Awards

cyrus_zuo

I've played Civilization 6 more than anything in the list. I'm glad we're getting good third party games on switch.

Especially because I had a day one WiiU with 50+ games, so much of the Switch library feels like "been there, done that."

Re: Gear.Club Unlimited 2 Speeds Onto Switch Tomorrow, New Features To Be Added After Launch

cyrus_zuo

Outside of MK there aren't good racers on Switch, which is disappointing. I look at this and think I should fire up Most Wanted U on my WiiU. I'll probably be happier that way.
Still, I hope devs keep putting games on the system, I'd love an honest to goodness good racer on Switch. Since NFS: MWU there hasn't been one, and I'm not confident there was one at all before it.
Burnout Paradise where are you?

Re: Video: New Trailer Shows Off Kirby Star Allies' Upcoming Creepy Challenge Mode

cyrus_zuo

I HATE Twitter video.
It doesn't matter if I'm on a desktop, laptop, phone or tablet, home, work or a friend's house, there is a 90% chance I click to play, it then loads the actual page to play, I click again, and nothing.

I can't imagine it is me considering how many devices and networks I've tried it on. Maybe it is chrome? UGH! Hate Twitter video...even when it does work it's like 3x the clicks to start it. WHY!?

Re: Preview: Battle Princess Madelyn Effortlessly Steps Into Sir Arthur's Boots

cyrus_zuo

I've gotten to where I can't bring myself to buy an indie game day 1.
They go on sale so quickly for such huge discounts, I often haven't even gotten to playing them before they are discounted.

I'm interested in this game, but will wait for a sale. That's going to be my standard approach going forward. It's just me responding to how the indies are running their businesses.

Re: Review: GRIP - An Exciting But Often Twitchy Combat Racer

cyrus_zuo

@Cobalt - unfortunately Nintendo is becoming more like Xbox and PS4 every day.
Microsoft and Sony have thrived releasing same type of inane repetitive content repackaged year over year over year. (Call of Duty 28 anyone?)

I like Nintendo because they do different things. They aren't afraid to try something different and have it totally fail. (Is labo the latest?) That is the path to finding fun new things, and I love Nintendo most when it is on that path.

The more Nintendo is like MS and Sony, the less interesting they are. I wish Nintendo was further away and not following the narrow path of the others in online, games, and everything!

Re: New Data From Nintendo Shows The True Selling Power Of Switch's Evergreen Titles

cyrus_zuo

This chart also shows why Switch sales are struggling this year.
EVERY great game came out last year!
It has been a slow, slow year for the Switch from Nintendo, and I don't see it turning around.
Smash will be fun, but why hasn't there been DLC for MK8 for the Switch? No tracks in years!
Why wasn't there more meaningful DLC for Odyssey? or additional content for Zelda? (since Zelda is usually a once every 5 years game that used to have handheld releases in-between the lack of the inbetween games for GBA/DS/3DS means it'll be a long-time for a new one)

I love my Switch, and I LOVE the indie games, where I've spent most of this year.
So don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan from day 1, but Year 2 of the Switch has been super lackluster from Nintendo, and that is why they won't hit their sales. They lost momentum, and unless Metroid 4 is crazy amazing AND coming out in the first half of next year, AND there is something else big coming soon, Nintendo already fired all their big ammo, it's already all been released, and now we just wait for the next console release that will have the next Mario Kart, Zelda, Mario & Splatoon games...
...sadface...

Re: Here Are The Top 10 Best-Selling Games For Wii U, 3DS, Wii And Nintendo DS (As Of September 2018)

cyrus_zuo

I thought this was interesting:

Super Smash Bros. (Wii U) 5.35 million + 9.35 million (3DS) = 14.7 million
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - 13.29 million

The latest Smash outsold the one on Wii, despite the Wii's crazy huge install base.

Fun numbers, and boy the WiiU had some GREAT Nintendo titles. I really hope 3D Land gets and update/boost for Switch, and I'd love a 'Super Mario Player' game on Switch that simply let you play all the online levels people have made on WiiU. For $20 I'd be in!
