Our next 'proper' slice of news for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity may well be scheduled to arrive later this month, but exploring Nintendo's official websites has revealed little nuggets of info ahead of time.
While it wasn't actually mentioned in the initial reveal trailer, Nintendo has confirmed that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity will feature co-op play on a new webpage dedicated to the game. If you fancy teaming up with a friend to take on Ganon, you'll be able to do just that:
Pass a Joy-Con to a friend and take on Calamity Ganon as a team in local co-op multiplayer. Fight side-by-side or divide your efforts to cover more ground, complete objectives, or defeat the forces of darkness!
A digital pre-order bonus has also been confirmed for both Europe and the US. It might not sound particularly exciting on the surface, but if you pre-order the game from the Switch eShop you'll receive a Lucky Ladle item that Link can use in-game. We can't imagine a ladle is going to persuade anyone who was originally on the fence, but there we are.
One of the weapons Link can use in the game. You can equip this for battle (paired with a Pot Lid), or you can fuse it with other weapons for stat boosts.
We'd take having the gorgeous box art on our shelf at home over this if we're being honest.
If you're looking to pre-order the game ahead of its November release, keep an eye on our guide which pulls together a number of different retail options for you to choose from.
Will you be picking this up? Was it the ladle that convinced you? Serve us a comment below.

Oh wow, so excited to get that ladle!
-And they've been working with the Breath of the Wild team so you know it will break in 5 minutes. Need to stick to the source material.
Local wireless play and online please. It's a damn pandemic... make online work.
Now we need a physical ladle for us who want a physical game
Moderately surprised that with everything going on right now they didn't implement online co-op as well.
I might not be able to pick this up at launch. Ah well, better ladle than never.
@sixrings At this point, nobody in my town cares about Covid anymore and I assume it's like that in alot of places(Especially Japan)
So I doubt Nintendo cares about making it online.
O seriously dont care if its online or offline just bring the game and i will play with my wife 😂🤔
A Ladle?! A Lucky Ladle?!?! Shut up and take my money 😛💰
Glad to have single-system co-op! Hopefully there's a multi-system wireless local co-op option as well.
So no online play, AGAIN!
@nessisonett Don't wait too long. It's coming out spoon!
@StinkyHat Warrior games aren't typically suited for online play, so its not really that big of a loss. Not even Nintendo's choice regardless, its whatever KT developed as a system.
@Kimyonaakuma 5 whole minutes?! I need to know where you’re getting such durable ladles!
I'm getting physical as it's cheapoer, and have a nice box art.
Local Co op, great! But where's the online side??????
Did the first Hyrule Warriors have co-op? Or the definitive edition? I could look it up myself, but cba.
This will be fun though for when I'm back at Uni.
No bonus for me, I already ordered the physical version.
And Fire emblem warriors, since I haven't played that one yet.
Physical all the way, but please just stop with these digital only pre-order bonuses. If I buy a game, I'd like to know I get the complete game (except for maybe future updates NOT required for an enjoyable experience at launch, or expansions made post release). This is really making buying a game basically an insult to yourself. You either blindly bite and get a bit extra, or you wait and get a forever incomplete game in a way. And it's not like I need that joke weapon, it's just like... Why EXCLUDE it in the first place?
This has reminded me I still have to pick up Hyrule Warriors Deluxe. Was hoping for a price drop by now but looks like it ain’t happening.
Local coop as well? Ok, I'm in. I just hope it's not as crappy as in the original HW.
@QueenKittenWrite great comment. Wait for the second wave and the second lockdown and you'll beg for online.
I think it would be awesome if we had our primary weapons as indestructible, yet still able to temporarily pick up weapons of fallen enemies to be used until broken/dropped or maybe even hold to quest completion. Could make for some interesting map/quest strategies.
That said, the mention of fusing for a bonus is interesting. To anyone that has played Hyrule Warriors, is there anything like that in the first game? I know there are upgraded versions of weapons, but I haven't actually played it myself.
Local wireless seems like a way to make more sales. I'd probably buy two copies of the game for our household. Hope it happens.
Co-op on Wii U for Hyrule Warriors was actually fun — though the frame rate suffered and the pop-up of enemies was a little crazy, at least you had two complete separate screens and there were some maps where have the two players really worked out in a fun way.
Online is a bit tougher to pull off maybe, but it would be nice, too, and I know some really rely on it.
All that said, I'd still pre-order this if it was single-player only. It's a bit too great an idea and fits way better than the previous Hyrule Warriors — though I can't deny the charm and fun of that one!
Will we get a human form of Calamity Ganon in this game? I wonder because the first Hyrule Warriors game came out with their own original Ganondorf design.
Physical. They should at least give the item to people who register the game in a timely manner. Like most preorder DLC items in games lately, this probably isn’t all that useful. (I’m looking at you, Rabite Charm on Trials of Mana.) Also, no online play really does stink, but I’m not surprised.
Not looking good for online coop, which means I’m out.
As a collector of physical games, I hate it when they do eShop exclusive pre-order bonuses like this. Are players buying your physical products not your customers too, Nintendo?
@Kimyonaakuma that was post-Calamity when everything became weak. Maybe everything was indestructible before then.
I am so buying this game, I think it’s a genius idea and is going to be really cool seeing how it all unfolded. The only weird part to me is we sort of know how it ends... and it doesn’t end well for our hero. So I wonder how they will implement that.
@TechJunkie69 fusing was in fact a thing you could do in HW. I would often fuse weapons to combine perks/buffs and free up weapon slots. 😃
I've been super interested in this though I didn't really like the last Hyrule Warriors.
This time around having it on console (instead of 3DS) and having the BotW art-style and a REAL story make it tempting...
Add Co-Op = it'll be hard not to buy this game
Are weapons breakable?
So no online co-op 😢😢😢
@ryancraddock "Next month"? It comes in November, that's over 10 weeks from now.
@aaronsullivan Now that we are sort of almost a 2 Switch household - 1 is on campus with my son, at least until Rochester burns to the ground - I see what you mean about them losing sales. I still prefer 1 console couch co-op myself (Luigis Mansion 3 is so much fun with my wife) but my son's want to play together, so buying 2 copies of each game becomes a thing. First up, SSBU.
A game like this, local co-op could sell a few copies, even if they skipped online for whatever reason. With all the Lites out there local co-op should always be a thing.
We'll be buying it probably day 1, my son hopefully comes home before T-day for 6 weeks, will give the boys time to play together, Christmas would be cutting it close.
Never played a warriors game as they just look like mindless button mashers. However, the source material may make it a must buy. Either that or i just watch the cutscenes on youtube to get the story segments
I love couch co-op when I can, but a bunch of the other Warriors games have online co-op by this point, so why don't the Nintendo ones have it? You'd think that they'd especially want the ability to do online co-op when the Switch is the first Nintendo console to have a lackluster online with an annual price tag attached to it.
I like this, but I'm concerned about the character limits. I can see them easily making Link, Princess Zelda, a younger Impa, Urbosa, Daruk, Revali, Mipha, and the King playable. I hope they introduce about ten or so characters to really flesh out the pre-BOTW world. I also hope that they confirm that everything about this release is canon.
This game comes out so close to Cyberpunk. Im only gonna have time to play one but i think I'm gonna prioritise Zelda. Cyberpunk can wait.
The special edition does nothing for me though. Will be buying this game on cartridge.
I can’t stand the Warriors franchise, but seeing as the story is supposed to cover the events prior to Breath of the Wild, I’m willing to give this one a shot!
@shoeses It's because Nintendo doesn't want to give you another excuse to pay for Nintendo Switch Online service. I mean why would they do thagt? instead of actual online games they prefer to give us reto game collections.
@Shambo agree 100%
Less I missed it; no Soundgarden reference yet? "Spoonman come together with your hands..."
Those extra should be extras for PreOrder physical buyers. Whom do they think is supporting them the most.
@Kimyonaakuma Well, YEAH— it’s a freaking LADLE!
@PoorGeno I might have to second dipper on this
@MaoMao I think there’s really no way to tell this story without showing Ganondorf beforehand, and the likelihood of that corpse being his in the BotW2 trailer... it’d be a waste not to connect the dots in this prequel.
I believe Ganondorf will actually be a playable character, and I also believe there will be an unlockable dark campaign where you play as the other side.
@Kimyonaakuma For real though, I fear they'll do that and make weapons break 😢Turned me off from BOTW.
Physical all the way for me.
BUT read the wording "or you can fuse it with other weapons for stat boosts" so therefore the weapons are upgradable.
@shani Ha! Sorry, it's been a busy week! That's fixed, cheers 🙂
@rjejr Fun to catch up again! Obviously this year has been a bit crazy. We are also on PS4 a bit, now - Jedi Fallen Order, Spiider-Man, and Horizon Zero Dawn.
We’ve got two Splatoon 2’s and that works pretty well except matchmaking means we play against each other half the time... just not as fun. It’s a tough pill to swallow, buying two copies, and we’ve rarely done it. I think I already said it: for this game, we’d probably do it. My daughter was only partly invested in the last zelda game because it was a bit silly, but this matchup with BotW seems so on point that she is interested too.
How’s college? Curious how it is going there for your son academically. The college is pretty far removed from the city, and the city isn’t doing badly from what I’ve been keeping track of (which I honestly haven’t been paying too close attention to.) Hoping all is well with you and yours as it must have felt pretty threatening.
I’ve resisted Luigi’s Mansion 3, but you are now the second person to mention offhand how much they are enjoying it. Backlog is real.
@aaronsullivan I honestly don't know how he is doing academically at college. I know most of it is online, a couple of hours in class, but he hasn't said anything beyond that. He's a smart kid, I'm probably not as worried about it as I should be. He's working 17 1/2 hours a week in the computer lab fir $11.80/nr, mostly wiping down keyboards, so I know he's out and about. His friend group just all bought Minecraft Java Ed to set up a server. I worry about paying for it, $20k/yr out of pocket, he can worry about his own grades.
I skipped Luigis Mansion 3 as well, only bought it b/c $42 sale which is good for a Nintendo 1st party game. I got it for my wife to play as she played the first but the couch co-op worked really well. Main story and a couple of side quest Boos took us about 25 hours. My kids will likely play it over the holidays. It's digital so won't be trading it in. But yeah, I'd recommend it.
Pre-ordered 1 copy of this, HW: AOC, physical, my wife and I will play on our Switch, my son's can play on his, just gotta figure out the time-share, cheaper than 2.
My son's copy of SSBU arrives today, so that's $165 we've spent on Smash, plus tax, plus a dozen or so amiibo. Maybe Switch DS will get SSBU Deluxe for $70 some day.
Time for breakfast, I'm making French toast. Oh, and since you have a PS4, and very good taste in games, PS5 announcement Wednesday at 4PM.i think we'll wait a year before buying, but that Xbox $35 month deal looked sweat, might jump on a similar deal for a PS5. Not that I think Sony can do financing though, so we'll wait for Black Friday 2021.😢
@rjejr Yeah, it's still early on in courses at college. Big step at a tough time! Hang in there!
Thanks for the reminder on pre-order for HW. When I saw you pre-ordered, I figured it must have appeared on smile.amazon.
That Xbox deal is impressive, right? Thing is we already have PCs, so it's just not as appealing. I'm right there with you on waiting a year for PS5... but a similar-to-MS deal would definitely tempt me.
Funny thing is, kids keep going back to Minecraft which plays on anything.
@aaronsullivan Minecraft plays on everything but I don't know how people keep up between java and bedrock.
We would also be very tempted for a PS5 deal, but I'm still all about the games. And I am so behind on the games. My plan is start The Witcher 3 on PS4 Wednesday night after they announce PS5 prive and date. I could wait on the PS5 upgrade but I am already waiting on PS5 for TLoU2 and Ghost of Tsushimi upgrades. And a 4k tv. And a new couch, ours is still broken.
PS5 is almost certainly my last console. Both my kids may be graduated from college by the time PS5 launches. Which is why I won't play FF7R b/c I know it won't be finished before PS6. Bu tit's also why I'm thinking PS5 sooner rather than later if my kids want to play it. Once they are both away at college they'll hardly be home to play. Great for me, bad for them.
So, you working on campus? Kids at school? It's crazy how everything has changed, but it changes differently for everybody. My son goes in every 4th day, my wife working at home since March, maybe until Jan, publishing seems to be unifying around January. And I'm waiting for Trump to nuke China Nov 4 if he loses. Nobody ever taught that man how to lose, he's a full blown spoiled brat, he'll never walk away w/ American ISIS backing him up. It's almost possible its' best for the country if he wins, b/c if he loses we could go full Mad Max. So maybe I buy a PS5 and enjoy it while I can. For $35 a month, not $500, don't have that.
@rjejr My department teaches "full remote" but live online scheduled meetings, the college overall is 75% remote and 25% face to face. The college has been really responsible and the pres. and all the decision-makers have done a commendable job. In contrast to the fed.
I went on a bit of a political bender here, but then I deleted it; I want to be careful because I think I am sometimes recognized by students here and they need to always think for themselves.
There is one thing I will openly recognize, though. Since you brought it up, I've never been concerned about the peaceful transfer of power in our country. It's something the US can proudly look back on since George Washington willingly and intentionally left office. Yet, now, we have a president who has publicly floated the idea of a "negotiation" based on the "way they've been treated" to have a third 4-year term. A president who is lower in the polls, saying that if his opponent wins it can only be if the election was rigged. You have no idea how many times I have written things and decided to delete them, here. lol. I'll just say, I'm paying close attention, daily.
