Sid Meier's Civilization VI is set to be treated to more DLC than one person could ever possibly need, with a brand new season pass - called the New Frontier Pass - being announced this week.
A developer update video has been shared (see above) to give you a glimpse at what to expect, but we also have full details for you below. The New Frontier Pass is set to add six premium add-on packs over the next year, adding eight new civilizations, nine new leaders, and a variety of new gameplay content to the game in the process.
The packs are planned to launch every couple of months starting from May 2020:
- Pack #1: Maya & Gran Colombia Pack. Adds two new civilizations and leaders, one new game mode*, new City-States, Resources, and Natural Wonders. Available May 2020.
- Pack #2: Ethiopia Pack. Adds one new civilization and leader, one new game mode**, one new District and two new Buildings. Available July 2020.
- Pack #3: Adds two new civilizations and leaders, one new game mode**, new World Wonders, and one new map. Available September 2020.
- Pack #4: Adds one new civilization and leader, one new game mode, new City-States, and numerous new Great People. Available November 2020.
- Pack #5: Adds one new civilization and two new leaders***, one new game mode, a new District, and two new Buildings. Available January 2021.
- Pack #6: Adds one new civilization and leader, one new game mode, new World Wonders, and one new map. Available March 2021.
That's not all, though, because six additional free updates are also in the works. These updates are set to include balance changes and free content, among "other surprises", so make sure to keep an eye out for those in-between all of DLC releases mentioned above.
Excited to check all of this out? The New Frontier Pass will cost $40 with the first DLC pack set to go live on 21st May.

I'll just take the freebies. I only paid $20 for the game, so don't really want to spend double on a dlc update.
This is One of the the best RTS games i have played.
Second in my list is Command and conquerer franchise, hoping to get one in the neat future for switch lol, even if its just a port.
@mesome713
Yeah me too, those dlc are wayyy too expensive.
@The-Chosen-one does it work okay?
I've been on the fence with this game for months. I really want it but I've heard that long games can lag and often crash?
I also heard an update that basically broken the game at the back end of last year.
Wondering if any of that is true?
I will buy it end of the month if not.
I’ll wait for a sale, like I did with the last set of DLC. If you’re on the fence about the game in general, I see it on sale for $15-20 all the time, and its well worth it. I’ve sunk 230 hours into the switch version.
@MoonKnight7 and it works okay?
No lag or anything from long matches?
Also what's the file size?
Edit: seriously debating just grabbing it right now 😂
@Razer
I havent had any issue about what was talked about on different sites.
I play it almost everytime in handheld mode, becouse of the touchscreen. But with the controllers it works really wel.
@MoonKnight7
Wait what? When was the DLC on sale?????
Didnt know that.
Good to see all those board games in the background. Think i own half of those.
@The-Chosen-one yeah I've heard some people say it's almost unplayable after a certain point in the campaign, which has warded me off but I'm starting to think those are isolated issues.
I'll definitely grab this. Either today or end of the month.
@Razer
I’ve never had a crash. The game does chug a little towards the end when you have things like planes. Its not awful or unplayable, but yes, there’s a bit of lag when there’s complex units, etc.
I don’t know if the bug has been fixed that breaks finishing the game. I heard it can be resolved if you declare war on someone before you win. I cannot confirm though, but it was a while ago and they were aware so I’m sure it’s resolved by now, and if not, soon.
The base game is 7.6 GB if you buy digitally. The first DLC is about 3GB if I remember right.
@Razer It's not unplayable at all, people just love to exaggerate when it comes to this game.
@The-Chosen-one
Maybe a month or two ago. I’m sure there will be another sale.
Edit: to clarify, I was talking about the base game. But yes, I’ve seen the dlc on sale for about 30% off.
@mesome713 me too!I have not even played mine yet. I see a game on sale and like a dummy run to buy it, even tho I have aan obscene amount to play in my backlog. I think the original game will keep me content for quite a while.
Mmmm. All most enough content for another game.
Not that I have the game but I did contemplate getting it when it came out.
Dlc usually becomes obsolete if you sell the original physical game. Maybe wait a couple of years for the definitive edition.
Love this game and have sink many hours into it and the DLC.
I love the scenarios, which are ~5 hour unique experiences (I just finished the black death scenario where the plague keeps affecting your cities and production - very relevant).
I expect I'll get this new set of content because I enjoy the game so much.
I'm super happy it's on switch!
@The-Chosen-one:
Are you sure, that Civilization is a RTS game? Because Command and Conquer is, but I don't think , that this game is.
I have a feeling, that Civilization is more similar to games like Heroes of Might and Magic, Nectaris/Military Madness and such.
Got this game in the sale, played it a few times and just couldnt wrap my head around it at all. Its a game id love to play as i love the style and idea of the genre but i like games where i know what im doing and why im doing it. I was completely lost 🤣
I've really loved playing Civ VI on the Switch, so I'll definitely be grabbing this. I didn't realized that this was actually going to be available for consoles.
@opeter Civ is turn-based strategy. C&C is RTS.
@vyseofhr
Thank you for this information!
I bought the expansions when they were added but only played a couple of games. I encountered couple of crashes when they were added and decided to wait for a while until it gets fixed. I believe they fixed it pretty quickly but I haven't played since. I have spent over 100 hours even before the expansions though. I'm interested in this new stuff but not rushing to buy it.
Civilization 6 crashes a lot for me, but it does seem to vary from game to game. I have had 30 hour games with no crashes at all, but I've also had games that I got 25 hours into and had to abandon because it would crash almost every turn. Declaring war does not fix those games, for the record. It's a bit like joy-con drifting, some people don't get it and then go and call the people who do have the issues liars, but that doesn't make it not a widespread issue. Like the drifting, if you don't have the issues it's probably that you haven't played enough to encounter them yet. That being said, more updates means more chances for them to potentially fix the crashes, but I'm not holding my breath. The only thing they have fixed so far was the issue that crashed the game before the victory screen, since that was near 100% of the time and too egregious to ignore.
The reason I complain about this every chance I get is because I love the core game so much- despite probably over a hundred crashes now I've still sunk 700 hours into the game. I want them to notice the problems some players have and fix it.
This is awesome, but I still haven’t explored much of the latest dlc! 😂🤣 Need to get back into this
@HeroponRiki I'm one of those who has a few hundred hours sunk into it with minimal crashes, probably less than a half dozen. Only problem I have is that annoying world congress bug which they still haven't fixed. Drives me nuts.
@Razer I have the game for a month now.Experienced two random crashes in about 45 hours of game time so far.Don't know what the cause was.
My problem is the DLC made the game much more sluggish and much more unstable, so I'm hesitant to add anything new to it.
I played almost 200 hours with the base game, it ran really well and crashed on me 2-3 times that whole time. As soon as I added the expansion pack it started running much slower, makes my Switch overheat like crazy and has crashed multiple times in the 50-odd hours I've played since then.
I love the new additions to the game, but they make my Switch beg for mercy.
Still a great game, but I honestly think the Switch is borderline too weak to handle the expansion pack.
@vyseofhr
Thanks for the reminder!
I'm going to hold out, till I win a game. Civ is such a deep and complex beast. It's also very drawn out, I litteraly have to make notes on the situation as otherwise you come back and you have no idea on where you are or why you're units are so far away.
I've Played Civ2,SMAX,Civ3,Civ4,Civ5,BE,Civ6
Now Civ6 is my most favorite Civ!
@JasmineDragon
true..
@Kidfunkadelic83 basically pick who you want and then read up how to win and just rush for whichever specific win condition you want.
37 euro is too much. I wait for human kind
No. Release your entire damn game; then I'll think of buying it.
I’ve been playing Civilization games since Civ 3 — easily one of the best gaming franchises. That said, it’s the only game I don’t play on my Switch — I prefer having a mouse and keyboard, but thankfully it’s available and cheap on Mac and PC.
I also don’t know how anyone could possibly play all of this DLC.
@Dreamcast2Turbo I have the “base” original Civ 6 and have played easily 150 hours and could easily play more. It’s definitely a complete game even without the DLC. I’m like you and detest half-baked games that abuse DLC but this isn’t one of them
@JasmineDragon I really wish they would add graphics settings to the Switch version that you could tone down to minimize crashing. I don't need to see individual fish moving around or waves crashing upon every shore. I need the game to not crash.
Woooooo!! Can't wait!
Forty bucks for six dlc packs is worth it to me. Especially since you'll be able to mix and match all the new game modes they're adding. Sounds great and I'm glad they're still supporting this one. It's always been two expansions and done.
@HeroponRiki Definitely. It's something I've wished for so many times, especially since I bought the expansion. Like, nice graphics are nice, but I'd be perfectly happy with less detail if it would help the performance. And I don't want to turn off the battle displays altogether because it's so easy to lose track of what was happening.
@Dreamcast2Turbo They did release the whole game. Base Civ6 is definitely a full and very meaty game (I logged 200 hours on it). This is just more stuff to add onto it.
I ordered the game last Night on Prime. Should be here by Monday latest.
