Update: Here's your friendly reminder that these games are out today!
Original Story [Fri 15th May, 2020 02:05 BST]: It's been quite a while since Nintendo updated its Switch Online service. Fortunately, it's now announced three SNES games and one NES game will be arriving next week, on 20th May.
The three SNES titles include Wild Guns, Operation Logic Bomb, and perhaps the highlight of the lot - Panel de Pon. This is the first time this particular version will be made available in the US. It was originally released on the Super Famicom in 1995 and is better known locally as Tetris Attack. Last of all is the classic side-scrolling, exploration-based NES platformer, Rygar.
SNES
Wild Guns – The Kid gang and their army of robots have taken over! Blast your way through villainous outlaws, diabolical robots and towering, screen-filling bosses. Fortunately, you’ve got plenty of moves to help you survive the firepower headed your way. You’ll need a sharp eye and quick-on-the-draw reflexes to survive on your own. Or team up with a friend and go out blazing in two-player co-op.
Panel de Pon – As the stack of puzzle pieces rises, think fast to match panels and set off cascading chain reactions and combos. You’ll have to make strategic choices quickly to counteract the relentless competitor attacks from above. A selection of single-player and two-player modes and options provides escalating action and zippy fun. This title originally launched for the Super Famicom in 1995, but this is the first time this version of the game will be available in the U.S. Though this title was never translated into English, it may seem familiar!
Operation Logic Bomb – Agent Logan has been fitted with bioelectronic implants that grant him superior strength, reflexes and analytical abilities. He’s been charged with a mission to save the Subspace Particle Transfer Project. Now it’s up to him to infiltrate, neutralize the intruders and rescue the scientists in a top-down shooter with giant bosses and frenzied action that doesn’t let up.
NES
Rygar– An old legend proclaimed, “When the peaceful land is covered with evil spirits, a brave soldier will be brought to life from the dead.” Luckily, Rygar, the mythical hero from Argus, has arrived in order to defeat the evil king Ligar and his army of dangerous beasts. Join forces with Rygar for a hybrid action-adventure game with a distinct blend of platforming and role-playing elements!
As noted by Nintendo, there are now more than 80 retro games to enjoy between the two libraries. Keep in mind, you'll need access to the NSO service to play these titles. If you don't happen to have a subscription, Nintendo is currently offering an additional seven-day free trial to service.
And finally, here's a look at the games coming to the Japanese Switch Online service in the month of May. Instead of Wild Guns and Operation Logic Bomb, Japan gets Super Punch-Out!! and Journey to Silius - two titles already available here.
What classic games are you looking forward to playing this month? We're asking Nintendo Life readers to help us rank all the NES games available on the service, so feel free to rate your favourites - we'll be reveal ing the results soon.

For as cheap as a yearlong subscription is, I think the service is pretty good.
I really don't know what to say. I love Wild Guns, but.... could Nintendo be a little more underwhelming again?
Have heard good things about Rygar.
Panel de Pon, the original Tetris Attack... Awesome.
Wild Guns is amazing.
Never heard about Operation Logic Bomb.
Sigh, hopefully there's something big on the 2 year anniversary. Let my sub lapse in October and haven't been compelled to renew since :/
Not a bad update. Glad we’re getting the puzzle since we’re never getting Tetris Attack for obvious reasons. Wild Guns is good for anyone who doesn’t want to pay for the Remastered version. Even the NES game is good.
Not the best but at least I’ll be able to play Rygar for the first time.
Oh, Panel de Pon, nice!
Always wanted to check out the original after playing it a lot on my imported Nintendo Puzzle Collection (GCN)
When can we get UN Squadron??
Tetris Attack??? Hell yeah!!!
Rygar and Wild Guns aren’t bad at all. Panel de Pon is one of those things I’ve heard of but never actually played so worth a go.
Rygar’s my jam! Try to play through it ever few years.
Even though this update will be underwhelming for some, that game alone makes this an ace update for me👌
Zzzzzz! Snooze fest Smh 🤦♂️
@Samwise7 UN Squadron likely is never coming, as it's based off of a licensed property (A Japanese anime series called Area 88).
Not terribly exciting, but I've never played any of those. Wild Guns looks objectively good, it's just that I suck and always have sucked at those kinds of games. Same goes for Logic Bomb.
NES Rygar is better than the arcade game Rygar.
Panel De Pon is a good addition. It's the second Japan-only cutesy competitive puzzle game on the service now.
Tetris Attack is one of my favorite puzzle games of all time, so I'm pretty excited about Panel De Pon being added. It's a shame it's just the Japan-only version, though.
Logic Bomb I remember renting from Blockbuster back in the day. It's kind of a mix between Contra and Smash TV. Not a bad game.
Operation Logic Bomb is a surprisingly decent overhead shooter where you navigate a maze-like military base. Wild Guns is good but the updated release destroys the original. Rygar......always felt like it worn on with lengthy levels.
This service has turned into Operation Illogic Bomb
And a note to first time Rygar players: there’s a leveling up system that the instructions likely won’t mention. Knowing that makes the game waaaay more manageable ✌️
Nintendo should really just bump the price of the service up, release ALL their IPs and have something that could blow Game Pass out of the water.
Oh Panel de Pon! That's awesome
@JHDK
It’s also available as a monthly service one that refuses to have new content monthly and allows its devs to avoid using one of its key features.
Panel de Pon!?!? I was just thinking the other week about how it would be a perfect choice since they can't do Tetris Attack due to licensing stuff.
And Rygar! I wouldn't mind a couple more NES games, but that's a great choice if they can only do one.
Very excited for Rygar. One of my favorites from the NES that never made it to Wii or Wii U VC.
Wild Guns is fun, but the remake on the Switch is so much better.
Oh man, time to beat Rygar for the billionth time
panel de pon needs a switch version with 4
player, hi res graphics, etc. this is nice tho
The Wild Guns game shouldn't have been on the list since they already remade it on the switch, never played the other 3 though, hopefully they are fun
How about Kung Fu Nintendo? It's one of your most popular black box titles, yet it didn't hit the virtual console on the Wii or Wii U, wasn't on the NES Classic and isn't here or on arcade archives.
Rygar is truth. A definite NES must play.
DKC trilogy, Super Mario RPG and EarthBound is all I need.
With Wild Guns being on here I don’t see the logic in not having these games available to buy off the service similar to VC. Just like you could buy the individual mega man games on the eshop as well as buying the collected edition.
For me, this is a decent update. Other than a few goes on Rygar in the arcade around 30 years ago, I haven't played any of them.
I wanted to get the remastered Wild Guns that came out last year but was put off by the price, now I'll get the chance to play the original. I enjoy puzzle games and Panel De Pon looks to be a good one. Operation Logic Bomb I've never heard of but after watching some gameplay, I'll have fun with that for sure.
You can't do much better than Rygar, Wild Guns and Tetris Attack in the same month.
Great update in my book!
I love SNES library, probably my favourite ever, and I'd love to have so many of those games imon Switch, but... I can't buy them, and I don't know any of the games they're adding lately. Why don't they release the good and known ones?? Damn it, I'm missing so many RPGs and platformers...
I mean, there are some omissions to the collection I'd like them to correct soonish (especially some of the 1st party ones on the SNES mini that aren't on SNES online), but I can't complain - I've wanted to try Panel de Pon, and Wild Guns sounds fun.
I think all of these additions are great, and I'm only sorta miffed on Wild Guns since it's already on the Switch with Reloaded.
GREAT update. Panel de Pon (Tetris Attack) is one of my favorite puzzle games along with Dr. Mario. Will lose hours playing that in online two-player. I bought Wild Guns Remastered when it was on sale for $10, but this would have been a great way to try it out for the first time at the very least. Any online two-player game should be viewed as a positive. Not familiar with the others, but I think this was well worth the wait and not at all what I would have expected them to add.
Sweet. I’m especially excited about Panel de Pon and Wild Guns, but I’ll play all 4 of these.
Wild Guns and Panel de Pon are both good choices.
Then we have discount Contra and discount Ninja Gaiden, which... don't sound like the worst games in the world.
It's a solid-ish little update, I think.
grabs cup of coffee
Just here for the comments.
Great selection! Except for operation logic bomb (mostly because I've never heard of it) the games here are excellent.
I just wish they would update more often :/
Always wanted to play the NES version of Rygar. Surprised that Nintendo's never made an attempt to rerelease the SNES version of Tetris Attack before, especially considering that Tetris GB was on the 3DS VC.
Rygar was one of my favorites as a kid. Have been waiting for it’s virtual appearance for a long time.
😮
Now we are talking!
Glad the Tetris license didn’t impede them!
@kingbk: Though an NES "black box" title, apparently it was licensed.
@Everyone_Else: I definitely have been waiting for Panel De Pon. For a long time now, I figured Nintendo would drop it (in Sonic voice: pun entirely intended) on the service eventually. (Edit: 1:26 for Dr. Jekyll Mr. Hyde music.)
So the only great one is Wild Guns and Wild Guns Reloaded is on the Switch already and I have it.
Nice.
This isn't hard, Nintendo. Your SNES library is insane, just give us the games.
Edit: Panel de Pon is actually not a bad pick, just not personally into match threes. Rygar is meh, OLB is also nothing special.
We got Paper Mario news, and now NES and SNES updates. You know what that means? It means something big is about to be announced.-
Please just give us earthbound
Hey it's the flower girl from Smash Bros!
@kingbk AAND let us buy individual games we like through the service for a hefty discount from what Virtual Console prices for individual games would be for those without NS Online.
Just...wow. Are they even gonna try anymore? Why bother at this point? Ain't NOBODY playing this garbage.
SNES library has some amazing games in it....and they release this instead.
Where is DKC 1-3?
Probably won’t happen because of the Tetris license, but I played a lot of the Tetris + Dr. Mario SNES combo cart.
What we thinking then? September, right before 2nd renewals, N64 games?
Love Tetris Attack!!! September I'm betting SMRPG in honor of Super Mario's 35th anniversary.
Well well, Panel de Pon just might tide me over until Shantae and the Seven Sirens!
These would be awesome ... if it was 1998
Nintendo's online service continues to underwhelm me. Pre-N64 no longer really interests me (and I grew up on Atari 2600)
This update with the Paper Mario news has been a good day for Nintendo
Yes my dream has come true, we are getting the original true Panel de Pon. So happy that Nintendo finally delivered. The Yoshi's Island version is good too but considering it used the Tetris license and not really a Tetris game and since Nintendo doesn't own the rights to Tetris anymore I could see why they go with the original. But this is awesome man, also Rygar and Wild Guns as well, really cool. Wild Guns I had to say would had been more exciting if a better version didn't already exist on the Switch eShop but the original is good too. Play it if you had not already bought the superior Reloaded Edition.
@tsdenizen Rygar is actually pretty awesome and was a fantastic action side-scrolling RPG. The hard thing about it was that it doesn't had a save feature back then so to have save-state on the Switch NSO is going to be very helpful for the game.
Give Japan Star Tropics. Spread the game.
It sure does seem like Nintendo has had a hard time licensing more desirable titles for either the NES or SNES libraries. That said, the SNES version of Wild Guns is a welcome addition.
@Bondi_Surfer Ever think that these are not for you, these are for the audience that weren't in 1998 and would love to try those kind of games for the first time.
@awaltzforvenus They are trying to give us games were never play before, so just enjoys what's there. This is the first time they didn't rehash us with multiple Super Mario, Donkey Kong, and Zelda games in one go.
@retro_player_77 Oh, I don’t mean to hate on it, really. I’m quite happy with both libraries on Switch. But there do seem to be some strange omissions, nearly two years in. And I suspect much of that is largely out of Nintendo’s hands.
My wife just got a Lite. We will be playing Panel De Pon like crazy as we used to rock TETRIS ATTACK and POKEMON PUZZLE LEAGUE a lot. Also, RYGAR on NES is fantastic. Pretty happy with the added titles.
Hope we eventually get Earthworm Jim and Earthworm Jim 2 soon!!
@JHDK I agree that the price makes the poor offering acceptable. Which is why I ask for a more expensive option with actually good offerings.
When the service came out, they led us to believe they'd be bring more games to the service from more platforms at a more consistent rate. Yes, it's cheap, but also yes, it's cheap. We get what we pay for.
@retro_player_77
Laffo they’re being cheap because they know people like you sites this like won’t call them out for releasing untranslated games on their subscription service, not translating these games is them knowingly rubbing it into anyone who is tired of their nonsense.
Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon and Operation Logic Bomb are 2 of my favorite SNES titles and Wild Guns looks interesting. Great update this time! ^_^
At least rygar is added. Been a long time favorite of mine since I was a kid.
Panel de Pon?!, The Original Panel de Pon?!!!!!!
Oh yay, yay, yay, yay, yaayyyyyyyyyyyyy!!!!!
This is Great!!!, Ok, ok, only to wait 5 days!!
Panel de Pon is a dangerous game, beware.
But I will say this is a step above selling Do-Re-Mi Fantasy for $9 untranslated on Wii.
I don't mind this update, I think it's worth the price
I actually like the original Panel de Pon with the little girls. I've played in on emulators, but it will be nice to play it legally for a change. I hope Nintendo eventually ports the GameCube version of Panel de Pon too as well as Yoshi's Cookie. I know that's not likely to happen, but a girl can dream.
Wild Guns is solid. That's a good addition to the SNES library.
Of all snes library...
I think Nintendo mocks us
I just realized you can probably play Wild Guns online with 2-player co-op. Holy crap that is awesome!
I'm desperately hoping that they're holding back EarthBound and EarthBound Beginnings just so they can release a trilogy collection. They won't, but wouldn't it be nice?
It would be nice if they added the option to play Tetris Attack instead of Panel de Pon too. Of course I need my Yoshi fill. But it's good to see the original, too; Lip shouldn't be forgotten.
I'd say this is about an 8 out of 10 for selections. Pretty solid all around.
Can someone please explain to me what the licensing issue is with tetris attack that is being mentioned here in the comments as to why we get panel de pon instead?
@Samwise7 Probably never, since the licence will have expired decades ago. Remember that this game was a tie in with the Area 88 Manga series.
@Severian Nintendo for a while owned the Tetris license, which I believe expired sometime in the late 90s. Not sure why they couldn't rerelease the Yoshi version and just call it something else, but I guess they can't.
Oof, at least give us the yoshi version of tetris attack.
@SmileMan64 you'll love Rygar. It's definitely one of the highlights of my childhood
About time. But keep them coming on a monthly basis, please.
Not even gonna bother to translate them?
Can we just please get a Super Bomberman already?!?!?!
@redd214 yeah I'm unsubscribing too, just waiting for my current one to run out, I renewed it when I heard SNES games were coming but little point in keeping it unless something comes along.
haha. I had to do a quick search to see if Rygar was the game I thought it was. And yep, I loved that game way way back in the NES days. That one will be a great nostalgia hit that's for sure. Faxanadu would be another great addition if it's not already there (haven't looked at the NES games for a while). They were both great games for that time... good times.
i waited 4 months to get this? THIS?! I am done with this nonsensical service once and for all!
Bring on NSO 64 games already
Now this is an awesome selection. Panel de Pon is literally the best puzzle game ever made, and the others are pretty good too. I don't know why some people are disappointed.
£15 for a year is as near to dammit as free games as you can get without them being free lol. It's laughable folk claim games are free on Gamepass or Now with their respective subscriptions being over £100 for the same period. I'm just not sold on such a high investment with nothing to show for it when I decide to stop. At least for £1.50 a month, I feel like I can have a couple of hours fun and think I have my monies worth. (I plonked more into a coin-op in less time!)
Playing Super Metroid, LoZ LTTP and Super Mario World is all I really need. These other games just don’t do a lot for me.
@Beaucine Wild Guns reloaded has an easy mode were you literally "blitz" the game in half an hour. It makes you appreciate how hard it was originally and in the other modes. Definitely give it a try if you already have Switch online.
At this point I’m baffled why DKC isn’t on there, let alone the trilogy. I just want to play DKC on the go. Never thought I’d have to beg for that game on an official SNES service...
Rygar.... <drifts off in a nostalgic trance>
Last time I played any version of that game was the Spectrum version released by US Gold. Believe it or not, I think I still have the case and cassette in my loft ...along with all my Spectrum games.
@kingbk Kung Fu was a third party game that was a port of an arcade game called Kung Fu Master. Both versions were made by Item.
Nintendo does not own this game. The rights and if it gets ported to modern systems is up to the current owner of Irem's ips.
@kingbk
I scrolled through the comments to look for a take on this exact question, because I knew the game was in teh Arcade ARchives as well. ^^
What makes it the better game, would you say?
@GrailUK The services are exactly the same. When you end your NSO sub you still have nothing to show for it at the end. All three services (5 technically) are streaming services. The difference is price and content, and the other two pay more because they get more content, more variety, and arguably, better content. A quick look in the game pass website shows 243 xbox titles on the service and one of the first games showing is Red Dead Redemption 2, which would most definitely give you more than a few hours of fun. Either way I hate video game streaming services and I'm not doing any of them.
Though that's actually not the comparable service to NSO, xbox live gold and PSN+ are, as these services give access to online and such. That service is half the price as game pass and comes in around £4 a month. And XBL gave out 16 games in 2020 where NSO gave out 10, and there were no games in January or March for NSO, meaning your £1.50 a month of games had to last you two months (so technically on that front you paid £3 to access those titles). That infrequent game release affects the value, and when viewed that way you aren't actually saving much money per title released for "free".
And this is just sticking to the free game releases. This still doesn't touch on the account, mobile app, online features, or discount bonuses from the subscriptions (spoiler: XBL and PSN destroy NSO on each of these too).
@nessisonett,
Never played any of these games so pretty decent update.
@Richnj I don't want to pay 100 quid a year for something that's more amusement (if you remember that) than a service! No thanks. Quit taking gaming so seriously, Nintendo sure as heck doesn't!
While I'm glad that unexpected games come to the service, thus making the NES and SNES Online service less "NES Mini" and "SNES Mini" online version, I would have hoped for better games between them. At least after waiting for months to hear about an update.
Don't get me wrong. They're not bad games, but among them there should have been a big one like, I don't know, Donkey Kong Country 2.
What happened to the monthly updates? The SNES Online was born without them in the first place. Please, Nintendo, remember this feature and look after it.
@GrailUK You don't have to pay £100 a year for one service, I sure as hell don't, and I wouldn't recommend it to others either.
They are services. You pay an ongoing price for ongoing product. That's why Disney+ and Netflix are called streaming 'services'.
I'll take gaming as serious as I like. It's my hobby, so I'll decide how much time and energy to put in to it. But it's actually not gaming I'm taking serious here, it's products, services and value. And as a customer, I'm always going to take value seriously.
Nintendo does take gaming seriously. That's why they are one of the big three platform holders and producers of some of the most highly rated and highly selling games of this gen and of all time.
For myself 18 pounds a year to play smw, lttp, super Metroid, Yoshi island is fantastic value. Considering how much else I spend on other games. So yeah all these titles are the cherry’s. But I guess a wish list that won’t happen is un squadron, turtles, Star Wars games and what not, but happy with what I’ve got x x x
Can't wait for the fandom's autopilot derisive comparisons to "rival" subscriptions even in the month where they dragged one of these subscriptions across the coals for the sheer atrocity of offering two simulation titles at once.😏
It's neat to have the original Panel de Pon officially in the west now ("Tetris Attack" only seems to have dolled-up Mario cast to its name and not much to do with Tetris itself), Operation Logic Bomb looks like a neat top-down shooter and Wild Guns is a particularly spectacular game, welcome to see on board even nowadays when Switch has its own remake. The NES Rygar is also remarkable for being a borderline metroidvania where the original versions weren't, but it also reportedly lacked any longtime saving features and only relied on infinite continues; as someone who still gets childhood flashbacks of beating Crusader of Centy on a bootleg cartridge with a disabled save function, I daresay this game and a quicksave-equipped service release were made for each other.😅 Wikipedia mentions a glitched PAL version, though; hopefully we're getting a somewhat tweaked rom now.
Never heard of these titles...
Damn, I've been really hoping for Axelay. Come on Nintendo, make it happen!
There’s some nice titles here. I also approve of their change in policy to bring some previously unavailable games to new regions. I doubt they will localize them, but one can still hope for the original Fire Emblem, right?
@Richnj Agree to disagree. I don't expect much outside of some fun from £1.50 a month. Which it does. Job done.
@KryptoniteKrunch Surprisingly calm in here for the mo...mind you it is still early.
@ShadJV @Rohanrocks88 Speculation: the Donkey Kong SNES trilogy will be released in relation to a new Switch title. Those omissions from the Switch Online service are too glaring to be explained away casually, as you say. I strongly suspect the release timing of the Mother and Metroid Prime trilogies is dependant on new Switch titles or compilations as well. (The Mother trilogy could well be released in Japan and nowhere else, as per Nintendo custom.)
@GrailUK wait, which bit do you disagree with?
Everyone: NSO updates couldn't get less frequent and more underwhelming.
Nintendo: Hold my beer.
Panel de pon on Switch! My life may finally be complete! I will spend hours and hours playing that.
It’d still be great if they could do a rom hack of Tetris Attack and call it “Yoshi Attack” or something though.
@Richnj Whereas Microsoft and Sony are hugely into telling us how integral playing video gam- sorry interactive digital experiences are
to being human etc etc (or words as nauseatingly cringe worthy), Nintendo sees them as entertainment. Even telling folk to stop playing them too much! So no, I don't view Nintendo taking games as seriously as others to the point of playing safe and standardising our hobby to the point of it being a generic money earner.
Wish they released it as Tetris Attack instead of Panel De Pon...
@GrailUK I tried Google and couldn't find them. Can you link me to articles of these companies saying these things?
Atleast 2 good games here.
I was literally thinking to myself just this morning that I wish Nintendo would release Panel de Pon for Switch Online. Awesome.
@John_Deacon The only sensible way to understand your question is as an actual request that Nintendo be more underwhelming, because they're releasing Wild Guns, Panel de Pon, and Rygar.
@Noid Licensing issues, I expect. My understanding is that the Tetris Company wasn't happy with their name being attached to something so different from Tetris.
@Richnj Nah mate. Life is too short. Move on
@pinta_vodki Tired meme aside, maybe learn a little about the games before you comment on them? Panel de Pon and Rygar are bone fide classics, and Wild Guns is something of an underrated gem.
@OorWullie You know NES Rygar is completely different from the arcade version, right? It's an early Metroidvania.
@GrailUK Didn't think so
@Richnj Lol. Hope you are safe man. Remember, it's just games.
The games are good, but I don't care, the service still sucks, the games need to come faster.
4 games at every 2 months is still too slow, many classics are stil missing, and giving us Game Boy or Nintendo 64 games, would improve the service but not fix it, it would be just 6 games at every 2 months.
@Markiemania95 Well, Kirby Super Star is on there.
@victordamazio Sure, but would anyone have time to play them if they did? I'm sure you're not abstaining from buying new eShop or retail Switch games. I personally have a backlog of games across several platforms that includes a lot of these Switch Online games that I still haven't gotten around to. It's easy to wish for more games, but what good would it do if NIntendo started releasing them faster than you can play them?
@GrailUK if it's just games, why were you complaining about another console having a £100 a year streaming service?
But unless it's earthbound final fantasy or donkey Kong no one wants it. Just let me pay for those games.
@Richnj erm...because it's just games...seriously, keep up!
These are four really good games, of that there is no doubt. But this whole thing just feels like someone in an office said " oh sh#t i forgot to post some more games to the online thingy last month" and shoved a few on there. Yes the service is cheap, but it's also pretty crap. make it a little more and give us some modern games for the Switch.
@GrailUK This hasn't been about just games. It's been about service value and people who argue non-sequiturs to defend such services. Keep up.
@Richnj I don't need service with my games it adds value I don't...err...value lol. Anyhoo, Can't stress this enough, life is too short. I don't mind you disagreeing, and I'm not paid to try to convince you otherwise lol...but I AM starting to think you are Phil Spencer! I'm a big fan Phil!
@GrailUK But you're paying for NSO (as am I), and that's a service. A service you have stated that you enjoy for the few hours of fun, but now that you don't value it?.
Trying to undermine my point by essentially calling me a shill is tiresome. It's an ad hominem. Rather than address my points, you're trying to question my motives. For the record, I have issues with all 3 platforms in one form or another. Xbox right now is the quality of the xbox elite series 2 pad. I've had about 7 of them sent back to MS support to be replaced and for a premium product that's really not good enough.
Let me circle back to why I picked out your original post. You claimed that £1.50 is great value. Which is fine. I'm sure to many that is plenty value. I'm actually not going to question people who enjoy it.
Unless... They, like you, try to claim it's good value because they find it laughable others would defend a more expensive service that offers more services or content. That is just the worst method I've ever seen for judging value or enjoyment of a product.
@Richnj I'm fine with it Now pls, shhhh. I would hate to give you the impression I'm going to lose sleep over this.
Decent update, im fine with it finally something new
@GrailUK I wouldn't expect you to.
more trash. Where are the RPGs??
@ShadJV I think they want to release the GBA Versions as definitive editions, or at least they need to collaborate with Microsoft to unleash a Donkey Kong Country Collection with the DKC Trilogy and the DK Land Trilogy as well.
Are we supposed to be excited about these? There are so many good Nintendo and Super Nintendo games that should have released instead. I think it is at the point where I miss the virtual console even more. It scares me to think about what games will come out for the N64, if that ever comes.
@Dr_Corndog This isn't just about me, just because I can't play all these games alongside the ones I already bought, it doesn't mean the service doesn't suck, this is about everyone, not just me.
The games are coming too slow, even if they deliver 4 good games every 2 months, too many of them will still be missing, they need to deliver games faster so more people will get pleased.
I'm honestly shocked by Wild Guns inclusion considering a superior remastered version is already on the Switch. Certainly not complaining though. All the people that don't wanna shell out the cash for Wild Guns Reloaded will get the chance to play it now.
@kingbk Licensing would be an issue since Nintendo doesn't actually own the copyright. Irem loaned it to Nintendo as a favor to make the NES version and Data East owns the US Arcade rights. So there would be a tangled web of rights to navigate and it probably isn't worth the money.
@Pod Rygar the arcade version is pretty much a hack and slash platformer where you need to go from the start to finish, beat the boss, before you rinse and repeat.
The NES version is an action RPG that is kind of like a mix between Zelda and Metroid. Much more involved and with variety.
Wild guns is an amazing game, not to mention super expensive for the actual cartridge, so it’s nice to see it on here.
Tetris attack is such a fun puzzler, too bad this original version won’t have Yoshi lol.
This is it fam, my Switch experience is complete. 25 years after release Panel De Pon is STILL my favorite game ever. Everything else on the entire console is gravy, as far as I'm concerned.
@Samwise7 presumably when Capcom pony up for the Area 88 licence, which they are unlikely to bother doing. Shame.
Rygar owns, and I haven't played it in probably 20 years now. It's good fodder for burning through during the pandemic
@flummerfelt Be happy that the original characters came back, Nintendo thought a bunch of cute fairies would never sell and would alienate male players, and replaced them with Yoshi, and also changed the name to Tetris Attack, and made the series a mess.
Hoping future titles in the Puzzle League series will have Lip as the main character again in all regions.
@FargusPelagius
Nice to know! Yeah, I've been looking at trailers of Wild Guns Reloaded, and it looks frankly spectacular. And all these comments on Rygar and Panel De Pon have me intrigued. Maybe this'll shape up to be a pretty good set, then.
Yes! I love Rygar for NES... great soundtrack too. I’ll be making use of the rewind function.
I loved Rygar as a kid, but it would be real nice to see rad racer or maybe rampart added
@kingbk
Thanks man, sounds dope!
@Heavyarms55 yeah when Switch Online came out i figured Snes, GB, GBA, and N64 would all be added by now. Its been pretty disappointing but then i say well its $20 a year so that would be insanely cheap for all those systems. I'd much rather pay $40/year and have all 5 systems with 2-3 game releases a month than this super cheap but often neglected service. The subscription model is way better than buying overpriced individual VC games but they need to give us a lot more and raise the price if needed.
@kingbk Kung Fu is owned by Irem, so chances are we will not see that game in the NES version officially released again.
Who remembers 30p F zero on Wii U? They could do a similar buy to own license via Switch online, for people interested in owning a license to play.
I guess it may be just me on this.....but frankly I haven’t been a fan of the Japanese releases in the NA NES and SNES apps. It’s completely in another language and Nintendo not only didn’t bother with a localization effort, but no instructions either! I’m sorry but this is sheer laziness on their part and frustrating for me, who looks forward to playing out-of-region games and their cultural references.
The text really takes the fun out of it for me (no offense to my Asian peers). I would rather not struggle with deciphering the non-Roman alphabet language and just enjoy the game for what it is.
It’s a good update. As others have said, shame they’re so infrequent.
@Pod you'll have a blast! It's one of my favorite NES games.
Also, the arcade version isn't bad, it's just not nearly as good as the NES one. I have it via arcade archives on my Switch.
I think the two "walls" the NSO service is running into when it comes to putting games out:
1. Third party developers wanting to release the games as bundle collections (see Mega Man, Contra, Castlevania, Secret of Mana, etc.)
2. Licensing fees for games (Ninja Turtles, Disney games, pretty much anything based off of a TV show, movie, toy, book, etc.)
Still, having said that, there are a ton of games for both the NES and SNES that still are available to move over.
@Slownenberg That's it exactly! I would be willing to pay more if the offered more!
But since they charge so little, I have a hard time complaining too much about them offering so little... What is so hard about offering different options? Offer more at a higher price for those who want/can afford it, and offer less for those who don't want/can't afford it!
@Samwise7
Probably never sadly, as the game was licensed from a popular manga back in the day. It's those licensed games that I feel like I most want to go back and play now, probably due to their scarcity. I wish I could go back in time and tell 12-18 year old me not to sell or trade in all my old cartridges just to keep up with the latest consoles!
Yay! I always love any NES and SNES bones that Nintendo throws us.
As I'm old, I'm most excited about Rygar this time. I got that game one Christmas morning (was it 1987?) along with Mike Tyson's Punch Out, together with a little color TV to replace my black & white set. I hooked everything up and I had beaten Rygar before going to bed that night! Punch-Out took at least a week to beat. I have very strong nostalgia for both games.
RYGAR!
RYGAR!
RYGAR!
RYGAR!
I'm so stoked for that!
I loved that game and have been waiting GENERATIONS for it to appear on a Virtual Console.
I couldn't understand why it didn't go to Wii, 3DS, WiiU...
Yet they all got Mighty Bomb Jack and Solomon's Key (by the same developer) and then Ninja Gaiden, completely skipping Rygar!
Switch got both the arcade and NES version of Solomon's Key even.
Rygar is a lot of fun, it's very different than the linear Arcade version. It is similar to Zelda in exploration/puzzle solving (Zelda back in the day).
My wallet has been ready for Rygar for a LONG time...and now it is free!
@Heavyarms55 yeah I like your idea of charging different amounts. A Switch Online Basic membership at $20/yr gets you NES and SNES. While a Premium membership at $40/yr gets you NES, SNES, GB, GBA, and N64. That'd be perfect. Hell if they add in Gamecube I'd gladly pay $50/yr.
At the very least it'd just be nice to know what their plans are. Like if N64 is coming later this year (oh please let this be the case!) let us know! Hopefully in a couple years we'll have all these systems on there and in hindsight we'll just be like okay Nintendo was just very slow in doing their internet service stuff as they always are but at least they finally got everything up there.
Im actually really surprised that the comments are mostly positive.
Imo IT SUCKS!!! like, really? instead of making an update that would actually be useful to the system, or hell even games that people actually WANT, they do this.
@Deege77
I think for the money, NSO is a great value that gets incrementally better each update. Yes it lacks newer systems and lots of popular titles (licensed games and most of the hit 3rd party stuff) but there are lots of great NES and SNES games (and Famicom + Super Famicom, too if you bother to set up a Japanese account) in the catalogues already. It’s a great and inexpensive way to share some classic titles with my young kids. I don’t even mind the drip feed, honestly. Gives me more time to chill and play Dr. Mario and as of next update, RYGAR! There’s so much to play and so little time, for me at least.
TLDR: I’m getting my money’s worth from NSO.
Rygar was my game back in the day. looking forward to play it once again. they should bring wizards and warriors trilogy.
@SmileMan64 Rygar NES is an amazing platforming adventure game and is easily in my top 10 best NES games of all-time list! I highly recommend giving it a go! Tetris Attack might be fun for short bursts, Operation Logic Bomb looks fun, and Wild Guns with online co-op, yes please!
I don’t understand the complaints. Sure, I’d like more games more frequently, but I have a hard time whining when I’m literally paying only $1.66 a month.
Just want dkc trilogy
If I didn't already own Panel de Pon on cart and Wild Guns Reloaded on Switch, I'd be all over this update. As it stands, it's really underwhelming for me.
@invictus4000 Speak for yourself
@ekwcll W&W has not aged well; it’s floaty jump system is so unwieldy and the constantly respawning enemies are annoying
If you have never played Wild Guns now is the time. Its a classic.
Is Operation Logic Bomb Worth Playing Today?
TETRIS ATTACK!!! My brothers and I would do multiplayer battles on that for hours and hours! So many memories of intense duels going back and forth. INTENSE duels. We'd even play it with a room full of friends passing the controllers around for tournaments and it would be like a Vegas group of gamblers at a hot craps table. It's funny I just mentioned this game in my comment on the Animal Crossing Tetris 99 event news article.
Wild Guns is also a great one. Such a classic representation of the times.
For whatever reason Rygar used to scare me as a child. Not sure if it was the music in those rooms with the fat old dude or what it just spooked me. Then again I was easily scared back then I mean seriously Sharp Tooth from "The Land Before Time" used to scare me so much I'd have nightmares
@ekwcll I also have been hoping for wizard and warriors! Still love the first 2 but have never played 3.
@theberrage @ekwcll Wizards and Warriors is one of those games I played A LOT as a child but could never get too far. I'd play it over and over again (after intense sessions of blowing on the cartridge to get it to work ) and die at the same spot. In those days even that was considered a great time of gaming. I really dug the music in that game so that could have played a role. I have a lot games from my childhood that were like that. Ninja Turtles NES is at the top of the list along with W&W of games I "Game Over" at the same parts but just reset and do it again.
While I genuinely am happy that we are finally receiving the original Panel de Pon in the west, it would be nice to receive the Yoshi version as well at some point. If the issue is licensing the “Tetris Attack” name, then they should use the Japanese “Yoshi’s Panel de Pon” version
This is the first time Panel de Pon has seen a western release and NOT be retooled into a Yoshi/Pokemon/generic puzzle game. How can I NOT be hyped for that?!
Also, Rygar is super underrated and Wild Guns is good fun! Awesome additions all around!
Wake me when they bring back the Virtual Console and let us access our VC games we've already paid for on the same accounts we use to log into the Switch.
I still have Rygar on the cartridge.
Wild guns is on wiiu eshop.
They should make the players unlock the games by beating other games. As is, I have no reason to revisit many of these games.
I remember playing Rygar in the arcade. Fun times.
@SalvorHardin If the game is playable without translation, why would they need to translate it? It's not like an RPG where we wouldn't know where to go or what to do. It's just a simple puzzle game that is fun to play with friends, that's all. It's like if someone gives you a simple candy cane, they don't need to translate anything to you on how to eat that candy cane, now if it was a book then maybe but a candy cane course they won't.
And I guess this is it until september, when the renewal of most subscriptions will prompt Nintendo to give us N64 games. At this rate, it'll be a wonder if half of Nintendo's retro consoles will make the cut by the time the Switch's successor is released.
@JHDK
Exactly!! Its really cheap so ill keep paying for this treasure of collections.
I loved Rygar as kid. One of the first games I finished. I remember staying up all night playing this, and putting a blanket down at the bottom of my door so my parents wouldn't see a the light from the TV coming through when I should've been asleep. haha.
Jeez, slow down, Nintendo, between the complete lack of features, shoddy infrastructure and drip-feeding those games like blood from a stone, you're giving as much too much for our money.
@retro_player_77 Actually, you do have to, selling candy with untranslated packaging is illegal in many countries, since it makes it difficult to check the ingredients, which is problematic in the age of allergies.
And not translating a game you're releasing is just lazy.

I quite like operation logic bomb reminds me of the original metal gear game on the NES, good fun game I have never seen or played before.
Rygar is a massive nostalgia rush for me. Though I played it on the Atari Lynx and not the NES, I'm still interested in this.
Logic Bomb is the only game I've not played so I'll certainly be giving that a go, too.
Wild Guns is such a great game. Really typifies that era of gaming in terms of looks, sounds, style.
Panel de Pon... meh...
@status-204 This is anything but a paltry selection. You may not be familiar with them, but Rygar and Wild Guns are considered classics. And I can speak from experience that Panel de Pon is the best competitive puzzler I've ever played. Try them out.
If Nintendo could keep a steady supply of NES and SNES games coming, they could even raise their price for online... but this insanely slow trickle and somewhat obscure games is unbearable.
@AlexSora89 I'm really hoping for some N64 games. Outside of the obvious first party choices, I'd like to see:
Mystical Ninja 64
Goemon's Greatest Adventure
Snowboard Kids 2
WWF No Mercy
Bomberman 64
Wave Race 64
Any chance we can keep all these games when Nintendo ends NSO while people’s subscription is still running?
I really wish Nintendo would just get around to doing a full virtual console service on Switch already. It's embarrassing that the Wii did this significantly better two generations ago. I expect at the least the same of Switch and ideally even beyond at this point.
Just three 30 year old games (and one even older). And not even some good old games. This sucks Nintendo.
@dimi To be fair, those are all very solid titles, but I do expect just more in general from this kind of retro gaming service from Nintendo at this point.
Nice releases, but adding titles like these monthly would be preferred.
Now give us what we want. Donkey Kong Country and Earthbound
@ummyeahnintendo NEVER! They have plans for those games separately, I must assume.
@SmileMan64 it's a fantastic game.
Could they really not put English over the game mode titles in Panel de Pon at least?
Tried out the games today. Tetris Attack is just as fun as I remember, Logic Bomb is a great hybrid of Metal Gear/Smash TV/Contra, Wild Guns is always fun and Rygar was one of the few titles like Contra and Bionic Commando that was better on the NES than in the arcade. Well done, Nintendo.
@Franklin 25 years later, they may no longer have the tools to modify the code with English menus and then recompile the code into a working ROM. So adding English menus probably isn’t feasible.
However, if the SNES app supported instruction manuals, they could include some screen shots with translations.
Even the NES and SNES mini consoles have QR codes for looking up instruction manuals on your smartphone. They should add this support to the NES and SNES apps.
TETRIS ATTACK?! iiiIIYYYYYYEASSSSSSSSSS
@kingbk not quite sure about releasing all of their IP, but I would pay more to get more. I'd. Pay $30 a year for an exclusive like Tetris and Kirby every quarter and discounts on select titles- they don't even have to be Nintendo.
@John_Deacon well they are beating around the bush, that's for sure.
Drip feed by RNG and release dates decided by an enumerate astrologer.
Tetris Attack was one of my favorite games during my childhood. Played that game with my siblings like crazy back in 1996-1998. Today I finished the 'story' mode in Panel de Pon and everything is there: same sounds, same music, same everything. I even send my brothers a couple of videos and they immediately recognized it. I really only think bad stuff about Nintendo's underwhelming online service, but this update made it worth it for me.
I can’t really understand the complaints about NSO (apart from online matchmaking quality...) when it’s such ridiculous value for money.
Seriously, it’s equivalent to roughly £1.50 a month - and even FREE for 12 months with many games.
If any of the complainers here are grown adults with responsibilities, that’s a drop in the ocean. I spend £20 on petrol alone every week!
Virtual Console had worse emulation, only one save state per game, cost considerably more (£3.49 for NES one title? £5.99 for one NES game?) and still took a long time to fill the back-catalogue over the years.
Furthermore - at the time Virtual Console was around, people would incessantly complain. Every. Single. Week... about the prices and selection. So nothing has changed in that regard; Nintendo merely acted upon these complaints.
Not everything was rosy ‘back in the day’, but was a novelty as there were few other options. Could Nintendo add a high paid tier? Yes. But by having this extremely affordable option, there’s really excuse to not buy into it.
@rockodoodle
I’d pay plenty more for a Higher Tier. Even if it was a Game Pass type of thing where you got 100 games across all old Nintendo systems rotated in and out. Totally in for that. But their strategy with NSO is transparently to find out what the absolute bare minimum is they can get away with in return for money.
@Emperor-Palpsy
It’s because I’m a grown adult with responsibilities that I’m aware of the following statement - Just because something is Cheap does not mean it’s good value. They aren’t the same thing.
I could buy the best Fishing Rod, or Surfboard, in the entire world for £20. Normally it’s worth £1000 but I get it for £20. Still not good value, as I won’t use it....
@electrolite77 I think it has more to do with them protecting their IP. But even Disney has had to succumb to a viable subscription service. Imo, they can avert this some by maybe having content exclusively developed for subscription, throw in some good, but old Nintendo stuff and then partner with other devs. But yeah, what they have now, while not bad for the price, is still embarrassing.
@electrolite77 If you’re honestly saying that £19 a year for dozens of NES, SNES, Tetris 100 and online matchmaking isn’t good value, then I suggest you try a different fishing shop?
I know everyone thinks Wild Guns is kind of pointless since the superior Reloaded version is already on the Switch. However, there is one big thing this has over Reloaded and that's the ability to play online with a friend. Reloaded, despite being beefed up to 4 player co-op, has no online play.
And hey now anyone who at least has a Nintendo Online membership can play the game if they don't wanna shell out the $$$ for Reloaded.
@Razzy Yes that's true, if you're selling something that can be consume you had to make sure the info are correct but in products like Panel de Pon it doesn't need to be translated in-game if it doesn't offer complicated play style. All the info about how to play the game is already there for you, all you had to do is play.
@Emperor-Palpsy
Some people won’t be interested (or already have) the NES and SNES games. Some won’t be fans of Tetris. Some will find the flakiness of the Online Play itself offputting. Some will prefer to play e.g. Rocket League or Mortal Kombat 11 on a system that offers Voice Chat.
Anyone who falls into those categories will see less value in it. Because something is only good value of the Price is justified by the Value of what you get in return. Something that isn’t guaranteed by being ‘Cheap’....
@rockodoodle
I certainly understand that about their IP. That’s where I wonder of rotation could happen. They could set challenges, have competitions etc. Hype up a big game coming to the service, put games on in the build up to a new franchise entry etc. But I certainly agree on the need for more exclusive content, however it comes about.
The best Panel de Pon version will still be the Pokemon Puzzle League / Challenge for N64 and GB Color. Both of them have better story and play modes (the gym leader challenge), giving additional depth to the game.
